Certain strains of bacteria are more prevalent in children with acute otitis media, those who have been inoculated with the pneumococcal 7-valent protein conjugate (PNC7) vaccine!

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Dec 22 - Certain strains of bacteria are more prevalent in children with acute otitis media who have been inoculated with the pneumococcal 7-valent protein conjugate (PNC7) vaccine, researchers report, with strains not included in the vaccine being favored.

As lead investigator Dr. M. Catherine McEllistrem told Reuters Health, "the proportion of cases of pneumococcal acute otitis media due to non-vaccine serogroup strains rapidly increased from 1999 to 2001 in children who received at least two doses of PNC7 vaccine."

Before licensure of this vaccine, about 85% of middle-ear isolates from children with the disease were of vaccine serotypes or cross-reacting serotypes.

However, Dr. McEllistrem of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and colleagues found that from 1999 to 2001, the proportion of non-vaccine serogroups increased from 14.8% to 36.5%.

Furthermore, they report in the December 1st issue of the Journal of Infectious Diseases, among children who received at least two doses of PNC7 vaccine, 46.7% of the isolates had non-vaccine serotypes compared with 20.8% in children who did not receive the vaccine.

Although this phenomenon is occurring among children who have acute otitis media due to Streptococcus pneumoniae, "significant serotype replacement has not been detected among children with pneumococcal invasive disease since introduction of the PNC7 vaccine," Dr. McEllistrem pointed out.

"These data," she concluded, "underscore the importance of the monitoring the epidemiology of pneumococcal infections in the PNC7 vaccine era."

More Than One-Third of Those Born in 2004 Will Get Diabetes

Stampede of Diabetes as U.S. Races to Obesity

Diabetes is a disorder of blood sugar regulation. In both types glucose builds up in the blood to damaging levels and spills into the urine. You may hear people with diabetes say they "have sugar" or "sugar disease." Specialized cells in the pancreas produce the hormone insulin that has the job of moving the blood glucose into cells where it can be used for energy or stored to meet future energy needs. 

...Scientists also predict that among non-Hispanic blacks, 40.2 percent of boys and 49 percent of girls will develop the disease while Hispanic boys face a 45.4 percent risk and Hispanic girls a 52.5 percent risk.

The analysis also shows that among those who are diagnosed with diabetes at age 40, men will lose 11.6 years of life and women will lose 14.3 years of life as a result of the disease.

If Your Doctor Says Spinal Fusion Surgery Think Again!

An Operation to Ease Back Pain Bolsters the Bottom Line, Too

A complex operation called spinal fusion has emerged as the treatment of choice for many kinds of unrelenting back pain. A quarter million of the procedures, in which metal rods are screwed into the spine to stabilize it, were performed this year in the United States, three times as many as a decade ago.

But a number of researchers say there is little scientific evidence to show that for most patients, spinal fusion works any better than a simpler operation, the laminectomy. And laminectomies get patients out of the hospital and back to their daily routine much faster. Some people, experts add, would be better off with no surgery at all. Even doctors who favor fusions say that more research is needed on their benefits.

In the absence of better data, critics in the field point to a different reason for the fusion operation's fast rise: money.

Ranchers Fought Rules That Might Have Prevented Mad Cow

WASHINGTON, D.C.—When it comes to politics you just can't beat the cattlemen for bellyaching. They are forever running around Washington, wanting to pay lower fees for overgrazing the public range or demanding cutbacks in environmental laws that might actually slightly intrude on their operations, and like everyone else under the big Republican tent, babbling on about the wonders of the "free market." 

In what will surely rank as cattle ranchers' biggest and stupidest p.r. campaign, some Amarillo ranchers sued Oprah because in 1996 she had Howard Lyman, a former rancher and food activist, as a guest on her show. The ranch owners think Lyman is a dangerous nut. He told Oprah how the beef men were feeding cattle ground up bits and pieces of other cattle, including stuff from sick cows, and warned it was only a matter of time before Mad Cow Disease hit the U.S. 

The cattlemen flipped out. Paul Engler, owner of Cactus Feeders Inc. filed suit, claiming that Oprah and Lyman hurt the cattle futures market and charging that they violated a Texas law that forbids "knowingly making false statements" about agricultural business. Claiming a right to free speech, Oprah won, but the beef men nonetheless insisted you could rest assured that Mad Cow could never come to the U.S. 

It is unclear whether the government's ban on "downers," animals that can't walk, from going into the food supply will actually keep this meat from being consumed. Downers may well end up being fed to other animals. And the USDA's testing program applies to only a few thousand head of cattle, when there are millions of animals going into the feed supply. Currently the USDA tests some 20,000 animals a year out of 29 million steers and heifers slaughtered. 

Since 1997 the government has supposedly been implementing a ban on the use of animal parts in food supplements given to cattle. Factory farming necessitates weaning the calf from the mother shortly after birth and feeding it protein supplements, which often contain parts of other cattle and other animals. But on January 31, the Washington Post reported that the General Accounting Office, the organization which carries out investigations for Congress, has criticized enforcement of the ban as lax.

I don't know about you but I have never been behind a motorcycle that made me nauseous with it's emissions, have you? Little guy gets stuck with expenses they can't afford, while big industry is allowed to pollute big time and continue polluting while making thousands of dollars releasing pollution into our space... Who in the world thought up this idea?  Whoever did this is suspect in my eyes... I do not own nor have I ever owned a motorcycle, but lets get real! See the following new law!

New Standards for Highway Motorcycles Contribute to Air Quality Improvements

EPA Administrator Mike Leavitt today signed a final rule that establishes the first new emission standards for highway motorcycles in 25 years. Highway motorcycles currently produce more harmful exhaust emissions per mile than cars or even large sport utility vehicles. When the new rule is in full effect, it will reduce emissions of hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) by about 54,000 tons a year and save approximately 12 million gallons of fuel annually by preventing it from escaping from fuel hoses and fuel tanks.

"These new rules significantly advance pollution standards for motorcycles," said Leavitt. "Motorcycles, cars, SUVs, light- and heavy-duty trucks and off-road equipment will run cleaner than ever before, and America's health and the environment will benefit." 

Starting in 2006, the standards will require manufacturers to reduce emissions of HC and oxides of nitrogen NOx by 60 percent. This will be accomplished through an increased use of proven technologies, such as secondary air injection, electronic fuel injection systems, and catalytic converters. The new standards will include previously unregulated small scooters and mopeds. EPA is also adopting standards, beginning in 2008, requiring the control of fuel loss (called "permeation") through the fuel hoses and fuel tank.

HC and NOx are precursors to ground-level ozone, a serious air pollutant in cities across the United States. A key component of smog, ground-level ozone is formed by reactions involving hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in the presence of sunlight. Hydrocarbon emissions result from incomplete fuel combustion and from fuel evaporation. Ground-level ozone causes health problems such as difficulty breathing, lung damage, and reduced cardiovascular functioning. A number of hydrocarbons are also considered toxic, meaning they can cause cancer or other health problems.

The new emission controls will cost an average of $75 per motorcycle when the final phase takes effect in 2010. The average cost of current motorcycles is about $10,000.
