Mothers' intake of indole-3-carbinol could help protect children from cancer

A report published in the October, 2006 issue of the Journal Carcinogensis described the finding of researchers at the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University in Corvallis, that pregnant mice given indole-3-carbinol (I3C), a compound found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower, deliver offspring that have a lower incidence of leukemia, lymphoma and lung cancer after being exposed to a common environmental pollutant known to increase the risk of childhood cancer.

Oregon State Marine and Freshwater Biomedical Sciences Center director David E. Williams and colleagues exposed pregnant mice to a single high dose of a carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon known as dibenzopyrene and found that 80 percent of their offspring died from T-cell lymphoma early in life and those that survived into middle age developed lung tumors. However, when the mice were also given indole-3-carbinol from the ninth day of gestation until the offspring were weaned, deaths from lymphoma were reduced by 50 percent and there were fewer lung tumors occurring in middle age.

The study is among the first to show that the effect of diet against cancer could begin long before a person is born and have lasting benefits. "Research of this type is still in its infancy, but it's pretty exciting," Dr Williams commented. "There's strong epidemiologic evidence that infant cancers can be caused by exposure of the fetus to carcinogens, either during pregnancy or by nursing. Among all childhood deaths in the U.S., cancer is second only to accidents as the leading cause, and the fetus and neonate are sensitive targets for toxic carcinogens. It would be important if we could affect this through maternal diet."

"It's clear that in mice this supplement provided significant protection against lymphoma and, later on, lung cancer," Dr Williams added. "It's also worth noting that none of the infant mice received the protective supplement later in their life, at any stage beyond breast feeding. The protective effect of the compound came solely from maternal intake during pregnancy and nursing, but lasted into the animal's middle age. This is somewhat remarkable."

Researchers from the department of ambulatory care and prevention at Harvard Medical School checked the records of 46,477 children over two years. The children received an average of three antibiotic prescriptions every year. Even though more than half of the antibiotics were for ear infections, which really need antibiotics, about 12 percent were prescribed for colds, upper respiratory tract infections, bronchitis and sinusitis. Very few pediatricians screen children for autism and autism spectrum disorders (ASD), possibly due to a lack of familiarity with the appropriate screening tools.

A study of more than 250 pediatricians in Maryland and Delaware found that while 82 percent screen their patients for general developmental delays, only 8 percent regularly screen for ASD. Most of those who did not screen for ASD were unfamiliar with the screening tools.

Screening is important because a delay in diagnosis and treatment often leads to poorer results for children with developmental disorders. Slightly more than five out of every 1,000 children are harmed by autism, according to the latest CDC report, although boys are four times more likely to be autistic than girls.

Olive oil gets all the credit. But new research shows that walnuts may actually beat it when it comes to protecting your heart.

Researchers in Spain recruited 24 people for their study -- 12 with normal cholesterol levels and 12 with what they referred to as "moderately high" levels. One week, each group was fed a meal of salami and cheese supplemented with 5 teaspoons of olive oil. The researchers then ran tests measuring various aspects of cardiovascular function.

The following week, both groups were fed the same salami-and-cheese meal, but this time they were given eight shelled walnuts along with it instead of the oil. Afterwards, the subjects underwent the same tests they had been given a week before.

The test results revealed that olive oil and walnuts both helped reduce levels of inflammation and oxidation in the participants' arteries. However, only the walnuts helped maintain the elasticity and flexibility of the subjects' arteries. According to the researchers, eating walnuts "actually undoes some of the detrimental effects of eating a high-saturated fat diet, whereas neutral fat, such as olive oil, does not have as much protective ability."

More Communities Throw Out Fluoridation

New York - Legislators and officials are responding to newly published evidence of fluoride's adverse effects and rejecting fluoridation.

This December, Juneau, Alaska and Martin County, Florida voted fluoride out of their drinking water. A Tennessee state legislator urged water companies to stop fluoridation. And the Vermont Department of Health sent a fluoridation warning to all Vermont dentists and pediatricians.

December 19, Martin County, Florida commissioners reversed their 2002 fluoridation mandate. Commissioners said fluoride studies raised health doubts, and they weren't convinced an oral health problem exists in their county.

December 11, the Juneau, Alaska assembly decided to stop fluoridation. One assemblyman said, ??many medical experts are against providing fluoride to infants? I think I prefer the cautious approach," reports the Juneau Empire.

Tennessee State legislator Dr. Joey Hensley, also a physician, urged all Tennessee water departments to stop fluoridation, in letters dated December 4. One city announced plans to stop January 2007.

According to Hensley, ?information is now coming out showing that the health risks associated with drinking fluoridated water significantly outweigh fluoride's limited cavity fighting action.?

In March 2006, the National Research Council's (NRC) long-awaited report revealed that fluoride jeopardizes health - even at low levels. Dental fluorosis is now an adverse health effect; bone fractures are now of concern; arthritis like pain and stiffness in joints is now a result of low levels of fluoride exposure; and tiny amounts of fluoride can cause thyroid depression and brain damage, according to the NRC report.

One NRC fluoride panel member was Tennessee risk assessment expert Kathleen Thiessen, PhD, who wrote to the Governor of Tennessee, "I support Representative Joey Hensley's recent recommendation that Tennessee water agencies stop adding fluoride to their water, and I encourage you to do so as well."

Dr. Thiessen works for Senes Oak Ridge, a human health and ecologic risk assessment firm, whose clients include the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Per the American Dental Association's precedent-setting advice, the Vermont Department of Health notified Vermont dentists and pediatricians, to warn parents against using fluoridated water for infant formula, to avoid tooth-discoloring dental fluorosis.

Acushnet, Massachusetts Board of Health asked New Bedford officials to halt its pending fluoridation of the shared water supply and alert the public of adverse aspects.

?Demand your community halt or decline fluoridation. Fluoridation is ineffective, unnecessary, and harmful,? says lawyer Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation.

Also, in 2005 and 2006 over 15 communities rejected fluoridation in at least 13 States and British Columbia.
