Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health

The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,

EDITORS' RANTING
+++++++++++++++++++++
Greetings and thank you for reading A Natural Environmental
Health Facts ezine!
We're engulfed in a beautiful winter wonderland. Everything
pristine and white with snow but the trees and bushes covered in ice
appears to be pink looking at them through the window, must be the
almost sun coming through the clouds as I've never seen pink ice before,
but it's gorgeous... Schools and most roads are closed this morning and
if it doesn't clear up a bit orders will be held up another day. It's
supposed to clear this afternoon for a day or so and then I can get out
of here and USPS can get in...So between the fact that my wireless
service was down for 24 hours - making it impossible to receive orders -
then the snow and ice began before they cleared that so if you placed an
order in the last 48 hours it will be late getting out of here... So
sorry!
My father had his 89th birthday on Monday and I'm told by my
sister he is still doing great, continuing off all 8 of his meds and
taking his herbs and minerals only, says he's going to live to be 107,
which will set a family record should that happen. His cousin lived to
be 106. His neuropathy seems to be in good shape and blood pressure
still normal and blood sugars still normal and prostate swelling still
down... Well he won't live to be 107 since he already submitted to a
5-way bypass a couple of years ago that will prevent that happening but
if by some miracle it lasts then he has prostate cancer, though it is in
remission since he started the herbs, minerals and silver water but
could still kill him before he reaches 107. I am only glad he can
continue with quality of life and not dragging around as he was...

House in Hamptons sells for $45 million
WAINSCOTT, N.Y. (AP) New York's most expensive home is no longer a
posh Manhattan high rise - that title now moves to the state's other
tract of astronomically priced real estate.
An 18,000-square-foot Hamptons retreat has been sold for $45 million,
situated on 25 acres of waterfront property on eastern Long Island.
Known as Burnt Point, it has 14 bathrooms and is equipped with
geothermal air conditioning.
The buyer was Stewart Rahr, CEO of Kinsey Inc., a pharmaceutical
distributor.
Neighbors include Steven Spielberg, Calvin Klein and Ronald Perelman.
The sale, first reported in Thursday editions of The New York Post,
comes just weeks after billionaire News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch paid
$44 million for a Manhattan penthouse where Laurance S. Rockefeller once
lived.
The Murdoch purchase held the previous record for a home sale in the
state, the Post said.

Something To Think About
============================
Ignorance is Bliss
Want to be happy in your old age?
Don't pay attention to anyone else's advice.
That's the word from the International Journal of Aging and Human
Development, by way of a study done at Hofstra University in New York.
Researchers studied the "inner ages" of various volunteers -- in other
words, how old they felt, regardless of what their drivers' licenses
said.
They found that the signs of a happy, youthful inner age were: being
venturesome, giving advice and keeping fit.
But the signs of being old and unhappy were: "taking advice, being a
homebody and having health worries."

Thought For The Day
=================
For many years the mainstream dismissed the idea that
bacteria caused ulcers. In the past two decades all that has changed,
and yet many doctors still don't test for H. pylori. And when a patient
does test positive for the bacterium, many doctors simply reach for a
prescription antibiotic - a practice that has led to new drug-resistant
strains of H. pylori. Even worse, antibiotics can upset the delicate
balance of helpful bacteria in your gastrointestinal tract, paving the
way for more serious problems.

Mixing alternative and traditional medicine can be

story of why that can be fatal, yet the alternative practitioner will pay

'Oxidation' Practice Comes Under Fire
Jan 1, 2005
By ALLEN G. BREED
WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - When Katherine Bibeau's body arrived at the
morgue, she was covered in large, deep purplish-black bruises.
But the woman had not been beaten, coroner Gary Watts discovered.
Rather, she had bled internally, and massively, after receiving an
unconventional treatment for her multiple sclerosis.
Intravenous infusions of hydrogen peroxide, administered by a physician
named James Shortt, had produced bubbles in Bibeau's bloodstream that
started her down a fatal spiral into multiple organ failure and cardiac
arrest, Watts concluded.
The death, he ruled, was a homicide.
This case and the death of another of his infusion patients have put
Shortt at the center of a controversy over a treatment that its
opponents say has no proven benefits - and serious risks.
Some 100,000 infusions of the chemical - a refined form of the first-aid
kit standby - are given each year across the nation as a treatment for a
variety of diseases, according to proponents.
Shortt, who is fighting to keep his medical license, denies harming
anyone. "I might be the world's greatest lunatic," he says, but "I'm not
going to do anything to my patients that I think might hurt them."
At the root of hydrogen peroxide's purported power is the same action
that makes it foam when placed on a cut. Proponents of oxidative or "hyperoxygenation"
therapy believe that many diseases - including cancer and HIV - can be
linked to oxygen deficiency. They say that infusion or even ingestion of
substances such as hydrogen peroxide, ozone and germanium sesquioxide
deliver an "oxidative burst" that can kill cancer cells and viruses, and
boost the immune system.
Shortt says he has been a believer since infusion guru Dr. Charles Farr
helped him save a lupus patient's blackened toes from amputation.
Shortt says he has administered as many as 1,800 hydrogen peroxide
treatments to patients from as far away as Europe, and has seen people
in the midst of severe asthma attacks "go from gray to pink" during an
infusion.
On a recent day at his clinic, Health Dimensions, patients occupied two
of the dozen black leather chaises arranged in a spacious lounge off the
waiting room. They watched videos as IV bags of yellowish and clear
liquid emptied slowly into veins in their left hands.
Many of his patients, Shortt says, come to him when conventional
medicine has run its course.
"We go to work from this point where you're hopeless," the 58-year-old
said in a recent telephone interview.
But health experts say injecting hydrogen peroxide directly into the
bloodstream can cause convulsions, acute anemia and deadly gas emboli. A
1991 article in the "Journal of Emergency Nursing" blamed the death of a
39-year-old cancer patient on such "cancer quackery."
The American Cancer Society says treating certain tumors directly with
hydrogen peroxide "remains an area for responsible research." But as for
infusion of the chemical into the bloodstream, there is "no scientific
basis for the regimens utilized by the oxymedicine promoters."
In September, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's Web site posted
a "Medical Alert," saying: "Hydrogen peroxide, administered either
orally or by intravenous infusion, is not a recommended or approved
treatment for multiple sclerosis. ... Dr. Aaron Miller, the National MS
Society's Chief Medical Officer, strongly urges people with MS to avoid
this unproven and potentially unsafe treatment."
Physicians in Missouri, North Carolina and Tennessee have had their
licenses suspended or revoked for giving patients intravenous hydrogen
peroxide. In the Tennessee case, the medical board said the physician
exhibited "gross malpractice ... and incompetence and ignorance in the
course of medical practice."
Katherine Bibeau, a 53-year-old mother of two from Cottage Grove, Minn.,
was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2001.
The avid knitter, gardener and baker - whom husband, David, has
described as "June Cleaver with an attitude" - was a breast cancer
survivor. So when confronted with a degenerative and incurable disease,
she embarked on an open-minded search for ways to combat it.
That search led her to Shortt.
"Hydrogen peroxide would be very good to kill whatever's in there,"
Shortt told her in a February phone call, according to a transcript of
the taped consultation. "Because, right now, we don't know what it is."
March 9, 2004, she sat in one of those leather chairs in West Columbia
as a 0.03 percent solution of hydrogen peroxide coursed through her
veins. That first treatment lasted 90 minutes.
Afterward, Bibeau complained of abdominal pain and nausea, according to
a federal lawsuit the family filed against Shortt. Two days later, the
suit contends, she returned to Shortt's clinic extremely weak, with
bruising at the infusion site and severe vaginal bleeding.
The lawsuit alleges that Shortt ignored these signs of "acute hemolytic
crisis" and failed to order a blood work-up for Bibeau, or to refer her
to another physician. Shortt, while acknowledging that hydrogen peroxide
therapy can destroy red blood cells after repeated treatments, denies
those allegations.
By the time she arrived at the emergency room on March 12, Bibeau was in
multiple-organ failure. Two days later, she was dead.
In July, a second patient of Shortt's died. Michael Bate, a 66-year-old
retired engineer, had advanced prostate cancer.
Bate's wife, Janet, said he received eight hydrogen peroxide infusions,
along with other treatments. (Bate also obtained the banned, discredited
drug laetrile. Shortt acknowledges showing Bate how to use it after Bate
made it clear he intended to do so against Shortt's advice.) In this
case, too, the physician has denied doing anything to harm his patient.
In September, armed state and federal officers raided Shortt's office
and confiscated his files. Later that month, the South Carolina Board of
Medical Examiners asked a judge for an emergency suspension of Shortt's
license.
Seeking support, Shortt traveled to the October conference, in Atlanta,
of the International Oxidative Medicine Association, which developed the
regimens he used. The group found that Shortt had followed its
"well-established" protocols.
In its position paper, the group's president, Dr. Robert Rowen, instead
zeroed in on two FDA-approved drugs that Bibeau had previously been
prescribed: the MS drug Copaxone and Tegretol, which is used to treat
seizure disorders.
Rowen noted that among Copaxone's listed side effects are "metorrhagia
(profuse uterine bleeding), thrombosis, bruising, clotting problems, and
infections." An Internet site dedicated to Tegretol warns of "easy
bruising, or reddish or purplish spots on the skin" as possible "signs
of a blood disorder brought on by the drug."
Rowen says it is "more than reasonable to conclude" that the interaction
of these two drugs was "the proximate cause of this death."
Shortt says he knew of no reason his treatment would react negatively
with the drugs Bibeau was taking. He did not suggest she drop those
medications.
Israeli drug company Teva Pharmaceuticals, maker of Copaxone, told The
Associated Press that its drug had been "extensively studied and tested
clinically ... and has proven safe and effective." Novartis
Pharmaceuticals, Tegretol's Swiss-based manufacturer, declined to
comment.
Richland County forensic pathologist Clay Nichols says Bibeau had been
on both drugs for more than a year "with no adverse effects."
As the investigations go forward, Shortt has voluntarily ceased
performing hydrogen peroxide infusions. The South Carolina medical board
has scheduled a Jan. 21 hearing to revisit his case.
Coroner Watts stands by his conclusions.
"I don't think he meant to kill her," Watts says. "I'm just saying ...
she died as a result of his infusing her with something he shouldn't
have infused her with."

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
That weepy, smelly but most popular veggie! Or is it a veggie?
Bad breathe or just the food you ate?
The food this week is the ever popular and most consumed vegetable, the
onion. Comes in many sizes, shapes and colors along with a second hand
odoriferous offensive smell! "It's not good for your friends, but it
is good for your health," said the lead researcher, Dr. Rui Hai Liu,
a chemist for The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry department
of food science.
The bulbous onion and its numerous relatives belong to a flower family
namely the Lily family. How can something so smelly come from a flower
family? I don't have the answer but that is a good question! Nature is a
mystery in a lot of areas and this is one of those!
Some of these alliums are distinctly ornamental; a few others, notably
garlic, leek, Welsh onion, and chive, are common vegetables. All of the
edible forms have related flavors and odors that are due principally to
a volatile, irritating substance.
The word "onion" comes from the Middle English unyun, from the French
oignon, which came in turn from the Latin unio, meaning "onion." Ancient
names for this plant in Sanskrit, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin are
apparently unrelated, indicating widespread culture of onions from
prehistoric times.
Onions can be divided into two categories: spring/summer fresh onions
and fall/winter storage onions.
Spring/summer fresh onions are available in yellow, red and white
throughout their season, March through August. Fresh onions can be
identified by their thin, light-colored skins. Because they have a
higher water content, they are typically sweeter and milder than storage
onions. This higher water content also makes them more susceptible to
bruising.
With their delicate taste, fresh onions are an ideal choice for salads
and other fresh and lightly-cooked dishes.
Fall/winter storage onions are available August through April.
Also available in yellow, red, purple and white, storage onions have
multiple layers of thick, dark, papery skins. Storage onions have an
intense flavor and a higher percentage of solids.
Storage onions are the best choice for savory dishes that require longer
cooking times or more flavor.
Onions are low in calories yet add abundant flavor to a wide variety
of foods. Averaging about 30 calories per serving, onions are sodium,
fat, and cholesterol free, and provide dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin
B6, potassium, and other key nutrients.
Mild sweet onions varieties are:
Spanish onions: known for their mild and delicately sweet flavor.
Bermuda onions: another category of mild onions that come in red, white,
or yellow.
Walla-Walla Sweet onions: originally came from Corsica at the
beginning of the 20th century and arrived in Walla-Walla, Washington
where they are grown today.
Texas Sweets: available mid spring through early summer.
Research shows that onions may help guard against many chronic
diseases. That's probably because onions contain generous amounts of
a flavonoid called quercetin. Other sources are tea and apples, but
research shows that absorption of quercetin from onions is twice that
from tea and more than three times that from apples. Studies have shown
that quercetin protects against cataracts, cardiovascular disease, and
cancer.
In addition, onions contain a variety of other naturally occurring
chemicals known as organosulfur compounds that have been linked to
lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
In Chinese medicine, globe onions (allium cepa) are said to calm the
liver, moisten the intestines, and benefit the lungs. Raw onions are
prescribed for constipation, for lowering high blood pressure, and for
healing wounds or ulcers of the skin. Spring onions, or scallions (allium
fistulosum), are used to induce sweating. One application for the common
cold is to take 20 spring onions and simmer them with rice to make
porridge. Add a little vinegar and eat while it is warm. Then wrap
yourself up in blankets to induce sweating. Works like a charm, but is
it the onion rice soup or the sweating?
Some health studies have shown raw onions to be effective in lowering
overall cholesterol while raising HDLs, the good cholesterol.
Additionally, onions kill infectious bacteria, a help in controlling
blood sugar, aid in dissolving blood clots, and help to prevent cancer.
Onions were used extensively by the ancient Egyptians, as shown by
drawings and inscriptions on their monuments. The Bible states that
during the wanderings of the Israelites in the wilderness, they longed
for the onions, leeks, and garlic they had had in Egypt.
In the first century many varieties of onion were known: long, round,
red, yellow, white, strong, and mild kinds. For a time in the Middle
Ages it appears that the onion was less popular than leek and garlic,
while now the reverse is true.
The onion was introduced by the Spanish into the West Indies soon after
their discovery. From there it soon spread to all parts of the Americas.
Onions were grown by the earliest colonists and soon afterward by the
Indians.
The Welsh onion - A. fistulosum - never forms a rounded bulb-only one to
several long white scallions. This form is most popular in the Orient,
but is grown almost everywhere. In Japan it is often incorrectly called
"Japanese leek."
One form of onion, the so-called Egyptian tree onion, or top onion,
produces "sets" - tiny bulbs - at the top of the stalk instead of
flowers and seeds.
The leek - A. porrum- like the Welsh onion, forms only a cylindrical
instead of a rounded bulb. The leaf of the leek, however, is flattened
and solid, while the leaf of the onion is cylindrical and hollow.
In the first century the Romans considered that the best leeks came from
Egypt, where they had been known in earliest Biblical times. The Emperor
Nero is reported to have been nicknamed Porrophagus because of his
inordinate appetite for leeks. He imagined that frequent eating of leeks
improved his voice! He could have right!
In the 6th century the Welsh won a victory over the Saxons and
attributed their success to the leeks they wore to distinguish
themselves in battle. What a smelly fight that must have been!
"Know your onions" was a term coined in the 1920s to indicate that the
many varieties of onions that were cultivated over the years never
acquired standardized names from one locale to another.
Leeks have been common all over Europe for as long as we have records of
food plants. In America, by 1775, they were cultivated by the Indians as
well as the colonists.
Chive - A. schoenoprasum - is an Old World plant now found wild in
modern Italy and Greece. It is believed to be native to the eastern
Mediterranean. The word "chive" is an Old French form of the French cive,
derived from the Latin cepa, meaning "onion." Grown for hundreds of
years in European gardens and in the British Isles.
The chive has beautiful blue flowers, but they produce no seed. It is
propagated by planting the bulbs, which increase in number each year,
forming dense clumps.
You can see that onions are not common and many types exist for our
eating pleasure!
Onions add flavor to all types of foods while adding healthy nutrients.
Eat and enjoy!

meta-study" sounds
impressive, but is it?
By now, you've probably heard about the big meta-study that put
vitamin E into Big Pharma's crosshairs. Headlines have been
emblazoned with warnings that supplementing with vitamin E could
kill you. Granted, it's selling a lot of newspapers. But here at
Nutrition & Healing, we're not concerned. Nor is Dr. Wright
changing any of his recommendations involving vitamin E. Here's
why?
First, a "meta-study" sounds impressive -- they estimated that
it included over 135,000 participants. That makes it sound like
any conclusions that come from such a big sample are
carved in stone. Here's the problem: A meta-study compiles data
from other studies and tries to make conclusions and spot
patterns. In this case, I believe they have failed miserably.
The data comes from combining a total of 19 studies, and here
are just a few of the flaws they contain that cast serious doubt
about the conclusion:
All of the studies included patients who already had one or more
chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, Parkinson's,
Alzheimer's, or kidney failure. All of these subjects were
already at risk for early morbidity. Yet the study's conclusion
extrapolates this data to all healthy individuals without taking
any of the many complicated factors into account.
Out of the 19 studies examined, only one of them showed data
that was statistically significant for "high" doses of vitamin E
as a possible cause. But half the people in that study were
taking other vitamins and minerals in addition to vitamin E, so
the conclusion that E was the culprit can't be proven. Also,
they examined "all-cause" death, which means that the
participants, who were already at high-risk for morbidity, could
have died from any of a number of causes. No real link to
vitamin E can be even remotely proven with so many other
competing factors.
Oh, and how could I forget? The icing on the cake is that the
meta-study was partially funded by the pharmaceutical industry,
which, as you know, doesn't make any profits when people take
un-patentable supplements such as vitamin E, but stands to gain
a great deal if they can convince people to take pharmaceuticals
instead.
Taking all of these factors into account, this one report
doesn't even come close to outweighing the thousands of previous
studies that have shown vitamin E to be a highly beneficial tool
for disease prevention and overall health maintenance.
I hope this little dose of reality puts you at ease. It's like
our mothers always tried to tell us: You can't believe
everything you read.

Elders' Sea Knowledge Spares Some Thais
Jan 1, 2005
BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Knowledge of the ocean and its currents passed
down from generation to generation of a group of Thai fishermen known as
the Morgan sea gypsies saved an entire village from the Asian tsunami, a
newspaper said Saturday.
By the time killer waves crashed over southern Thailand last Sunday the
entire 181 population of their fishing village had fled to a temple in
the mountains of South Surin Island, English language Thai daily The
Nation reported.
"The elders told us that if the water recedes fast it will reappear in
the same quantity in which it disappeared," 65-year-old village chief
Sarmao Kathalay told the paper.
So while in some places along the southern coast, Thais headed to the
beach when the sea drained out of beaches - the first sign of the
impending tsunami - to pick up fish left flapping on the sand, the
gypsies headed for the hills.
Few people in Thailand have a closer relationship with the sea than the
Morgan sea gypsies, who spend each monsoon season on their boats plying
the waters of the Andaman Sea from India to Indonesia and back to
Thailand.
Between April and December, they live in shelters on the shore surviving
by catching shrimp and spear fishing. At boat launching festivals each
May, they ask the sea for forgiveness.
