I'm sitting here laughing at my dear husband and his life crises... When our youngest daughter left on Sunday she said, "We will be back for your birthday dad." He remarked to me later that day, "Why are the kids coming for my birthday this year?" I replied, "It will be your 70th birthday and a special milestone and they want to honor it." He got this look of horror on his face and said, "You know 69 didn't sound so old but 70 is sounding really old I'm not sure I'm ready for it." Like he has a choice in the matter. ☻ He is now in a late life crises thinking about that number. You may not find that funny but if you knew my husband and how he still works with his brother building houses and walking those walls like a 20 year old and see how young he acts you would understand he doesn't look, think nor act near his age, for which his grandchildren are thankful... Of course he tells everyone it's because of Wayne Garland's Master Formulas and liquid minerals that keeps him young and healthy!

We are finally back to a normal two day weekend. How nice that is. It's not that I dislike long weekends but it certainly plays havoc with my days as I can't tell one from the other with so many days in a weekend... It's called habit and at my age that rules a lot of my thinking as it does for most of my peer group... I'm just happy to be back to normal for a change... Enjoy your weekend and make sure you do take a day of rest as your body requires it...

Periodontal Disease and Health?

Subjects who engaged in moderate exercise less than three times each week had a 33 percent reduced risk of periodontitis compared to subjects who didn't exercise at all.

Those who vigorously exercised three or more times each week reduced their risk by more than 50 percent compared to non-exercising subjects
Lowered risks only occurred in non-smokers or former smokers. Risk was not reduced among smokers who exercised.

Healthy Fortunella crassifolia!

I'm again missing those nice little orange, yellow and greenish fruits that use to grow in our back yard in Southern California. It was easy to walk out and pull a few off the tree and eat them as a snack during the day or put in a bag to take to work for a morning or afternoon snack. We had two different types; the normal kumquat - small yellowish orange colored - and Limequats - greenish yellow color, both the shape and size of bird eggs - growing in our back yard that were absolutely refreshing and different and were ready for picking throughout the winter months. I loved slicing them into fruit salads as well as fresh off the trees as a snack. Tangy insides with a sweet peel, so different from other citrus that require peeling before eating.

Kumquats, also called Cumquat, kinkan or Fortunella crassifolia or as Chinese call them Gold Oranges, are the fruits that are produced from small family of evergreen trees, similar to an orange tree, that grows to a height of 10 - 15 feet. Our kumquat and limequat trees were miniature and only about 5 feet tall but never failed to be loaded with fruit? Kumquats are truly the tiny jewels of the citrus kingdom. The bite-size fruit, which are eaten skin and all is a wonderful combination of tangy and sweet flavors unique to themselves. The seeds, similar to the seed of the orange with a distinctive green color, should not be eaten, but contain pectin, which can be removed by boiling for use in making jams and jellies.

Kumquat is a small little fruit that is said to be native to China and Indochina, where the trees can grow up to 10ft, and are much appreciated for their beauty and fruits. Dwarf kumquat trees are specially cultivated in pots for the Chinese New Year celebrations, when its fruits are used as edible decorations. In the U.S. they are mostly cultivated in California, Florida and the Gulf Coast. Slightly bigger than a Brazil nut, they have a thick sweet peel and a tart pulp. Excellent in marmalades, jellies, crystallized, minced or whole. They make an interesting addition to salads or in sweet and sour dishes.

Has the minerals that most citrus contain such as; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, Selenium along with the Vitamins C, B-6, B-12, A, E, folic acid, niacin, Thiamin and riboflavin. Making it very citrus but also a calming soothing food. So when you are out of sorts have a few kumquats!

Winter fruits that can brighten up a dreary winter day. Compact and bite-sized, you can eat kumquats as you would a grape. Just wash them and pop in your mouth. They're also nice in salads or as a garnish in drinks. They have a tangy citrus flavor and can be used in any dish that calls for oranges or grapefruit. Kumquats are high in fiber and vitamin C. There are variations of kumquats such as orangequats, lemonquats, and limequats.
We prefer to eat them raw but? They also make a great addition to fresh squeezed juices. Plop a few into your juicer and add a zing to your juice. Works best with citrus juices or pomegranate.

If you live in an area where you are privy to having access to the kumquat family take advantage of these healthy little tangy fruits. But you can also find them in some grocery stores in the fresh vegetable and fruit section.

Failure Drug Maker Relays New Deaths

WASHINGTON (AP) - The manufacturer of the heart failure drug Natrecor reported two additional deaths in patients involved in a study carried out three years ago but said it was confident the cases don't mean an increased risk.

The deaths had not been previously reported to Natrecor's manufacturer, Scios Inc., a Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) subsidiary, company spokesman Mark Wolfe said Tuesday.

The two cases bring to seven the number of patients who died within 30 days of treatment with Natrecor, also known as nesiritide. One patient treated with placebos, or dummy pills, died during that time.

Dr. Jonathan Sackner-Bernstein, a New York cardiologist and lead author of an April 2005 report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that was critical of Natrecor, said the drug should be withdrawn.

"What it says to me is the information we published, if anything, understates the risks associated with the drug," Sackner-Bernstein said.

The cases are contained in an interim report being submitted to the Food and Drug Administration. The final version of the report, slated for completion by April 1, will measure how patients treated with Natrecor fared compared with those given placebos in the 30 days after treatment began.

The authors of a report on the original study, published in October 2005 in the Journal of Emergency Medicine, will submit an update that includes the two additional deaths, Scios said in a statement. The October report found no statistically significant difference in the outcomes of patients treated with Natrecor or a placebo.

Natrecor was approved in 2001 to treat serious breathing problems that often accompany heart failure.

Early last year, the FDA ordered that more information about the risk of death from Natrecor be added to the package insert for doctors, but the agency said it still believes the drug is a useful treatment.

The warning label on nesiritide already mentioned the potential for low blood pressure, kidney problems and more deaths than are seen with nitroglycerin.

Natrecor sales had declined significantly, Johnson & Johnson said in October, blaming media reports that the drug was being used too much on outpatients.

The intravenous drug has been given to more than 600,000 patients nationwide.
