OTC Cough Syrups Not Effective

CHICAGO (AP) - Despite the billions of dollars spent every year in this country on over-the-counter cough syrups, most such medicines do little if anything to relieve coughs, the nation's chest physicians say.

Over-the-counter cough syrups generally contain drugs in too low a dose to be effective, or contain combinations of drugs that have never been proven to treat coughs, said Dr. Richard Irwin, chairman of a cough guidelines committee for the American College of Chest Physicians.

Drugstore shelves are crowded with cough syrups promising speedy, often non-drowsy relief without a prescription.

But "the best studies that we have to date would suggest there's not a lot of justification for using these medications because they haven't been shown to work," said Irwin, a professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Mass.

The group's new cough treatment guidelines discourage use of over-the-counter cough medicines. Irwin said that not only are such medicines ineffective at treating coughs due to colds - the most common cause of coughs - they can also can lead patients to delay seeking treatment for more serious coughs, including whooping cough.

The guidelines strongly recommend that adults receive a new adult vaccine for whooping cough, approved last year.

The Consumer Healthcare Products Association, a trade group for makers of over-the-counter medications, disputed the guidelines and said over-the-counter cough medicines provide relief to millions of people each year.

The guidelines were published in the January issue of Chest, the American College of Chest Physicians' journal, released Monday. The recommendations have been endorsed by the college, the American Thoracic Society and the Canadian Thoracic Society.

Many popular over-the-counter cough medicines proudly advertise that they don't cause drowsiness, but Irwin said that is because they do not contain older antihistamine drugs that do help relieve coughs that are due to colds.

These antihistamines, including diphenhydramine - an active ingredient in Benadryl - are also available over the counter but are not marketed as cough medicines, he said.

Some over-the-counter cough syrups contain two drugs that have been shown to help relieve coughs caused by colds - codeine and dextromethorphan - but generally the doses are too small to be effective, Irwin said.

Dextromethorphan is in Robitussin, a top-selling over-the-counter cough syrup. It is among Robitussin ingredients that the Food and Drug Administration has found to be safe and effective, said Francis Sullivan, a spokesman for Wyeth Consumer Healthcare, which makes Robitussin.

Sullivan said Robitussin "wouldn't be a top brand if people didn't feel it was efficacious."

Coughs can have numerous underlying causes, including asthma, allergies, severe heartburn, postnasal drip and bronchitis.

Dr. Edward Schulman, an American Thoracic Society representative on the guidelines panel, said patients should see their doctors for coughs that linger longer than three weeks or are accompanied by shortness of breath, which could indicate pneumonia or other serious conditions.

Coughs due to colds usually last less than three weeks. Drinking lots of fluids can help relieve these coughs, and so can chicken soup, Schulman said.

LENA'S COMMENT: I don't know if this is a ploy to sell more expensive prescription drugs or reality... You know what is really strange? At one time the OTC cough medications were by prescription and we were told they were the best! Now the story has changed... I have not found a direct link between Dr. Schulman and the drug industry except that they subsidize Drexel University Medical College where he is Director of Pulmonary Medicine and that may very well influence his opinions and ideas?

An afternoon nap will work wonders -- and it won't reset your internal clock.

That's the word from the American Journal Of Physiology, which reported on a study by the department of medicine of the University of Chicago on the effects of different nap times on your internal clock.

If you take your nap in the morning, say around 9 a.m., you'll set your internal clock back by a phase.

If you take an evening nap, around 7 p.m., you'll be setting your internal clock one phase ahead.


And as for afternoon naps -- at about 2 p.m. -- they just feel good.

A weepy, smelly food that is probably the most consumed of any vegetable!
 
Bad breathe or just the food you ate?
 
The food this week is the ever popular and most consumed vegetable, the onion. Comes in many sizes, shapes and colors along with a second hand odoriferous offensive smell! "It's not good for your friends, but it is good for your health," said the lead researcher, Dr. Rui Hai Liu, a chemist in The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry department of food science.
 
The bulbous onion and its numerous relatives belong to a flower family namely the Lily family. How can something so smelly come from a flower family? I don't have the answer but that is a good question! Nature is a mystery in a lot of areas and this is one of those!
 
Some of these alliums are distinctly ornamental; a few others, notably garlic, leek, Welsh onion, and chive, are common vegetables. All of the edible forms have related flavors and odors that are due principally to a volatile, irritating substance.
 
The word "onion" comes from the Middle English unyun, from the French oignon, which came in turn from the Latin unio, meaning "onion." Ancient names for this plant in Sanskrit, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin are apparently unrelated, indicating widespread culture of onions from prehistoric times.
 
Onions can be divided into two categories: spring/summer fresh onions and fall/winter storage onions.
 
Spring/summer fresh onions are available in yellow, red and white throughout their season, March through August. Fresh onions can be identified by their thin, light-colored skins. Because they have a higher water content, they are typically sweeter and milder than storage onions. This higher water content also makes them more susceptible to bruising.
 
With their delicate taste, fresh onions are an ideal choice for salads and other fresh and lightly-cooked dishes.
 
Fall/winter storage onions are available August through April. Also available in yellow, red, purple and white, storage onions have multiple layers of thick, dark, papery skins. Storage onions have an intense flavor and a higher percentage of solids.
 
Storage onions are the best choice for savory dishes that require longer cooking times or more flavor.
 
Onions are low in calories yet add abundant flavor to a wide variety of foods. Averaging about 30 calories per serving, onions are sodium, fat, and cholesterol free, and provide dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin B6, potassium, and other key nutrients.
 
Mild sweet onions varieties are:
 
Spanish onions: known for their mild and delicately sweet flavor.
Bermuda onions: another category of mild onions that come in red, white, or yellow.
Walla-Walla Sweet onions: originally came from Corsica at the beginning of the 20th century and arrived in Walla-Walla, Washington where they are grown today.
Texas Sweets: available mid spring through early summer.
 
Research shows that onions may help guard against many chronic diseases. That's probably because onions contain generous amounts of a flavonoid called quercetin. Other sources are tea and apples, but research shows that absorption of quercetin from onions is twice that from tea and more than three times that from apples. Studies have shown that quercetin protects against cataracts, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
 
In addition, onions contain a variety of other naturally occurring chemicals known as organosulfur compounds that have been linked to lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
 
In Chinese medicine, globe onions (allium cepa) are said to calm the liver, moisten the intestines, and benefit the lungs. Raw onions are prescribed for constipation, for lowering high blood pressure, and for healing wounds or ulcers of the skin. Spring onions, or scallions (allium fistulosum), are used to induce sweating. One application for the common cold is to take 20 spring onions and simmer them with rice to make porridge. Add a little vinegar and eat while it is warm. Then wrap yourself up in blankets to induce sweating. Works like a charm, but is it the onion rice soup or the sweating?
 
Some health studies have shown raw onions to be effective in lowering overall cholesterol while raising HDLs, the good cholesterol. Additionally, onions kill infectious bacteria, a help in controlling blood sugar, aid in dissolving blood clots, and help to prevent cancer.
 
Onions were used extensively by the ancient Egyptians, as shown by drawings and inscriptions on their monuments. The Bible states that during the wanderings of the Israelites in the wilderness, they longed for the onions, leeks, and garlic they had had in Egypt.
 
In the first century many varieties of onion were known: long, round, red, yellow, white, strong, and mild kinds. For a time in the Middle Ages it appears that the onion was less popular than leek and garlic, while now the reverse is true.
 
The onion was introduced by the Spanish into the West Indies soon after their discovery. From there it soon spread to all parts of the Americas. Onions were grown by the earliest colonists and soon afterward by the Indians.
 
The Welsh onion - A. fistulosum - never forms a rounded bulb-only one to several long white scallions. This form is most popular in the Orient, but is grown almost everywhere. In Japan it is often incorrectly called "Japanese leek."
 
One form of onion, the so-called Egyptian tree onion, or top onion, produces "sets" - tiny bulbs - at the top of the stalk instead of flowers and seeds.
 
The leek - A. porrum- like the Welsh onion, forms only a cylindrical instead of a rounded bulb. The leaf of the leek, however, is flattened and solid, while the leaf of the onion is cylindrical and hollow.
 
In the first century the Romans considered that the best leeks came from Egypt, where they had been known in earliest Biblical times. The Emperor Nero is reported to have been nicknamed Porrophagus because of his inordinate appetite for leeks. He imagined that frequent eating of leeks improved his voice! He could have right!
 
In the 6th century the Welsh won a victory over the Saxons and attributed their success to the leeks they wore to distinguish themselves in battle. What a smelly fight that must have been!
 
"Know your onions" was a term coined in the 1920s to indicate that the many varieties of onions that were cultivated over the years never acquired standardized names from one locale to another.
 
Leeks have been common all over Europe for as long as we have records of food plants. In America, by 1775, they were cultivated by the Indians as well as the colonists.
 
Chive  - A. schoenoprasum - is an Old World plant now found wild in modern Italy and Greece. It is believed to be native to the eastern Mediterranean. The word "chive" is an Old French form of the French cive, derived from the Latin cepa, meaning "onion." Grown for hundreds of years in European gardens and in the British Isles.
 
The chive has beautiful blue flowers, but they produce no seed. It is propagated by planting the bulbs, which increase in number each year, forming dense clumps.
 
You can see that onions are not common and many types exist for our eating pleasure!
 
Onions add flavor to all types of foods while adding healthy nutrients. Eat and enjoy!

When Worse Is Really Better!

From time to time I receive a call or email from someone who has started an herbal treatment for whatever their problem, and they are ready to take my head off because it made them feel worse, so they stopped the supplement. A BIG misconception on their part, but understandable.
 
When chemotherapy, radiation or some prescription drugs are initially utilized a person gets very ill and at the very door to death in most instances, but this is accepted as good and necessary in the traditional world of medicine
 
Never mind that about 40 percent of people who get chemotherapy die from the treatment first before the cancer can kill them. Known by the oncology world; that same chemotherapy treatment is found to be effective in only 20% of people and both facts are known to oncologists and the drug company who manufactures the drugs and either ignore or accept it as collateral damage.
 
Yet, when an alternative health treatment is begun some people seem to get worse and most of you will stop them immediately thinking that's bad? Congratulations, you just accepted what the traditional medical world has
brain washed you into believing about herbs!  Why is it okay for cut/burn/poison treatments to put you at deaths door or through that door and be okay?  Because you've been educated to believe it's okay, nothing more nothing less!
 
Over centuries of using herbal and nutritional treatments a known fact exists in the alternative practitioners world, 80% of people who consume them will have positive outcomes! Yet in the traditional medical world they only have to be effective in 20% of the tests to be released for use and prescribed by the medical profession. What's wrong with that picture?
 
Herbs are God's gift to us! 70 plus years ago the body's chemical balance existed because our earth and foods contained them. Medicine was herbs! Neither now exists! 
 
Herbs will work with your body to correct imbalances and health problems but it will take time. Healing isn't immediate as the body takes time to balance out and the organs to begin working as they should to bring about that healing. You can feel worse when that begins to happen!
 
There is an exception to that, but it's not an herb.  Studies over the last few years found that more than 640 bacterial, viral or fungal infections immediately respond to Ionic Silver Water treatment but isn't to be taken daily as herbs can be!

Those illnesses and diseases are only rampant due to a lack of proper nutrients in our foods. That makes it imperative that we ALL supplement daily with balanced nutrients.  Yet when some begin that supplementation they feel worse for a while.
 
So when you start the path to a healthy body with natural healers know that feeling worse is good! The body is telling you that you really need those
nutrients.
 
People, who have taken some less than the total 84 minerals required by our body, or not so mega-vitamins, even if they aren't complete and balanced, will not experience the worsening effect to the same degree someone who has never taken vitamins or minerals will?
 
To get your body into an illness and disease fighting mode you should supplement with a complete liquid mineral complex and mega vitamins! Experts to Study S.C. War Encampment

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - With the shore along the north end of Folly Beach eroding, archaeologists will set out next month to see how much of the site of a Union Civil War encampment can be saved from the oncoming waves.

The island was once the site of Fort Green from which guns were trained on Charleston during the siege of the city.

The site at the island's old Coast Guard base is owned by the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission, and the study will determine whether it can be preserved.

"The answer could range from doing extensive excavations to abandoning all hope and letting nature take its course," said Steven Smith of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology

Eighteen months ago, archaeologists sank pipes along the island to monitor erosion, said Julie Hensley of the park commission.

"They're all gone. One of them was 20 or 30 feet back from the high water, and it's gone," she said. "As much as 50 yards of the forest has gone. The erosion just continues to become worse and worse."

The encampment site is on the National Register of Historic Places, and Civil War artifacts are buried beneath the sand.

About 4,000 Union troops camped on the island before the 1863 attack on Battery Wagner on nearby Morris Island. The attack on Wagner by the black 54th Massachusetts regiment was commemorated in the movie "Glory."

Fort Green was garrisoned by the 55th Massachusetts, another black Union regiment.

"The guns there were trained on Charleston as part of the big siege. It was a pretty heavy occupation," Smith said.

Following Hurricane Hugo in 1989, archaeologists, including Smith, found hundreds of artifacts from the Union camp including a bugle, Minie balls and pipes as well as boots and shoes.

Now scientists will see what remains.

"We're just going to go out there and try to figure out how much is left and see if we can find any past studies of that area to get an idea of how fast things are eroding," Smith said.

After the study, archeologists will make recommendations about how the county should handle the site.
