Cancer-Virus Link Growing Quickly
Viral Infections Increasingly Implicated in Cancer Growth and Development

Dec. 10, 2003 (New York) -- You can't "catch" cancer like a cold, but new research now shows that infection with any of a number of different viruses may play an important role in the growth and development of cancer. 

More than a dozen different viruses have been linked to various forms of cancer. In most cases, the presence of a particular virus increases the risk of developing cancer or speeds its progression. For example, HIV and other viruses that affect the immune system make infected individuals prone to a variety of cancers by weakening the body's natural defenses. 

But in other cases, there is now compelling evidence that certain viruses may also play a critical role in causing cancer. Proving that a particular virus causes cancer, however, is complicated. 

"One of the things that is complicated about this is that there is a long time between exposure to the virus and development of the cancer," says Bruce Johnson, MD, of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. "Number two is that it's not a one-to-one thing. There are a lot more people who are exposed [to a virus] than have evidence of a tumor." 

Johnson moderated a briefing today in New York City on the virus-cancer link sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Oncology. 

Currently, Johnson says the scientific evidence is strongest for the link between cancer and the human papillomavirus (HPV) and the hepatitis B and C viruses, but many other viruses are also under investigation for their ties to cancer. 

HPV Linked to More Than Cervical Cancer 

HPV has long been associated with an increased risk of cervical cancer, but new research suggests that the virus may also cause head, neck, and anal cancers. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted virus, and about 5.5 million people in the U.S. become infected with HPV each year. 

In many people, HPV infection causes no symptoms and resolves on its own without causing illness. But about 18 of the 120 different types of HPV are closely associated with cancer and are known as high-risk types. 

"Over the last three years there has been an explosion of data on HPV," says Maura Gillison, MD, PhD, assistant professor of oncology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, who also spoke at the briefing. 

Gillison says HPV has now been implicated in 99% of cervical cancer cases. But new studies show that the virus is also responsible for the majority of tonsillar and anal cancers, which helps explain a dramatic rise in these types of cancer in recent years. 

Gillison says up to 15% of the cancers reported each year worldwide are caused by HPV infection, and the virus accounts for one-third of all cancers attributable to infectious agents. 

Hepatitis Infections Behind Rise in Liver Cancer 

Researchers say viruses are also to blame for a dramatic 71% increase in the incidence of liver cancer from 1976-1995. Hepatitis B and C viruses are the major risk factors for developing liver cancer, and more than 80% of liver cancer cases worldwide are linked to hepatitis B infection in areas where the virus is prevalent, such as developing countries. 

But experts say hepatitis C may actually account for the rise in liver cancer in developed countries. Hepatitis C is transmitted primarily through intravenous (IV) drug use, blood transfusions with infected blood, and sexual contact. 

LENA'S NOTE: I have a book written in the late 1800's by a very smart servant of God and she wrote that God had shown her that cancer would be a prominent illness in the future and that cancer is virus caused! How interesting that it has only taken the traditional medical world over one hundred years to find out what God already knew! They should have read her book...

This herb supplies important vitamins and minerals, for instance, 
just ¼ cup of fresh organic parsley provides a third of your daily 
vitamin C requirement. It's high vitamin C and A content also 
helps fight cancer. Parsley ranks higher than 
most vegetable in bistidine an amino acid that inhibits 
tumors. In addition, parsley is an excellent source of 
potassium, which is important in lowering blood pressure. 
Also supplies folic acid, which helps prevent cardiovascular 
disease. It also contains calcium, manganese and iron.


Is it any wonder that a Mediterranean diet is one of the known 
healthy diets? The average Mediterranean inhabitant eats
lots of parsley in a lot of different dishes! 

The Medieval German herbalist St Hildegard of Bingen 
prescribed parsley wine to improve blood circulation. It was 
believed to help heart conditions. To make parsley wine, 
combine 10 - 12 large sprigs of parsley with 1 quart of red or 
white wine and 2 teaspoons of white-wine vinegar. Boil for 
10 minutes then add 9 ounces of honey. Strain the mixture
and pour into bottles. Take 1 Tbsp. Three times a day
is said to keep the blood circulating.

WARNING: If you are taking blood pressure medications do 
Not drink parsley wine as your blood pressure may go too 
low! 

Tips:
·* Parsley contains essential oils; the most important one, 
apiole, is a kidney stimulant. Because these essential 
oils can stimulate uterine contractions, pregnant women 
should avoid eating large quantities of it. BUT, after the 
baby is born, parsley can help tone the uterus and promote
lactation. 

·* Don't cook parsley, because heat destroys its valuable 
vitamins and minerals. To retain parsley's flavor, chop 
the herb just before using and add it to hot foods at the
last minute.

·* Avoid dried parsley, it is far less tasty and less 
healthful than the fresh herb.

·* Try the flat leaf variety, also called Italian parsley, It has 
more nutrients and a better flavor than curly parsley. 

·* Add parsley to compliment a dish, such as potatoes, 
smoked salmon, trout, poultry, pasta and vegetables.

·* Freeze fresh parsley to save preparation time in the 
kitchen. Wash, zip seal plastic bag. You can then remove
the amount you need with each recipe.

·* To keep parsley fresh, sprinkle it with water, wrapping 
it in paper towels and refrigerating it in a plastic bag. 
Or place parsley stems in a glass of water, like a bunch 
or flowers, and refrigerate.

Top scientist attacks US over global warming

Climate change is a more serious threat to the world than terrorism, David King, the government's chief scientist, writes in an article in today's Science magazine, attacking governments for doing too little to combat global warming. 
He singles out the United States for "refusing to countenance any remedial action now or in the future" to curb its own greenhouse gases, which are 20% of the world's total, even though it has only 4% of the population. 

Disclosing that he had commissioned a team of scientists and engineers to find ways of reducing the severe damage the UK faces from climate change, he says the potential damage to property runs into "tens of billions of pounds per annum". 

Britain is doing its bit to reduce emissions, but acting alone is not enough, he says. "We and the rest of the world are now looking to the USA to play its leading part." 

As an example of what his team is discussing, he says Britain's coastal defences will be subject to attack from both increased sea-level rises and greater storm surges. 

"These combined efforts have the potential to increase risk of floods in 2080 by up to 30 times present levels. In the highest emission scenario, by 2080 flood levels that are now expected once in 100 years could be recurring every three years. People at high risk of flooding in Britain will double to nearly 3.5 million." 

If no work is done coastal erosion in Britain will increase nine-fold, he adds. 

Urging action to reduce carbon dioxide emissions at once Sir David comments: "Delaying action for decades, or even just years, is not a serious option. I am firmly convinced that if we do not stop now, more substantial, more disruptive, and more expensive change will be needed later on." 

He says the estimated cost of tackling climate change is around 1% of gross domestic product (GDP) for developed countries like the UK. This figure could be offset by the risks associated with doing nothing. 

For example, if just one flood broke through the Thames Barrier it would cost around £30bn in damage to London, roughly 2% of GDP. 

Taking action to combat climate change can create economic opportunities and improve living standards. A new round of negotiations is about to begin on how to tackle climate change beyond 2008-12, when the existing Kyoto agreement on reducing emissions is due to end. 

He urges the US and developing countries to get involved "in what is a truly global problem". 

In a swipe at the administration of President George Bush, Mr King says that the US was wrong to pull out of the Kyoto protocol. The Bush administration was also wrong to claim Kyoto could harm the US economy, he says: "In my view, climate change is the most severe problem we are facing today, more serious even than the threat of terrorism." 

As the only remaining superpower, the US is used to being in the vanguard of international coordination but he says its government is failing to face up to global warming. 

Mr King says the US strategy "relies largely on market-based incentives and voluntary action" but the "market cannot decide that mitigation is necessary, nor can it establish the international framework in which all the actors can take their place". 

There was only so much that countries like Britain could do in isolation, he says. "The United Kingdom is responsible for only 2% of the world's emissions," the Cambridge academic says. 

Yesterday a major study published in Nature magazine showed that climate change over the next 50 years is expected to drive a quarter of land animals and plants into extinction. 

Chris Thomas, professor of conservation biology at Leeds University, who was lead author of the research from four continents into the effect of higher temperatures, called the results "terrifying", estimating that more than 1 million species will be lost by 2050. 

Much of that loss - more than one in 10 of all plants and animals - is irreversible because of the extra global warming gases already discharged into the atmosphere. However the scientists who conducted the research believe action to curb greenhouse gases now could save others from the same fate.
