Something To Think About
============================
Is Tamiflu really the answer
to Bird Flu?
Doesn't look to be a viable
solution; Last month the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM)
published an article with details about two Vietnamese patients with
avian flu who were treated with Tamiflu shortly after symptoms were
identified. Both patients died. But they didn't die because Tamiflu was
ineffective. They died because the virus developed resistance to Tamiflu.
Eight avian flu patients who were treated with the drug. Four of the
patients showed a drop in viral levels and survived. The other four
patients died. Approximately 120 people who have contracted avian flu
over the past two years, about half have survived, without taking
Tamiflu.
LENA'S COMMENT: I would take my chances without Tamiflu with those
odds... The statement, "But they didn't die because Tamiflu was
ineffective." is really a ridiculous statement... They died taking it
and if it was effective they should not have died!

American sugar
cane and beet farmers have developed a new Web site devoted to spreading
the "Truth About Splenda." The site will post comments from
Americans who feel misled by Splenda advertisements and will provide a
forum for people to share their experiences with the chlorinated
artificial sweetener. The Web site,
www.truthaboutsplenda.com, was launched in 2005 in response to
Splenda's marketing campaign that incorrectly touted Splenda as natural.

TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Five Steps To
Health
Nutritious food, pure water, vitamin and minerals supplements and
exercise along with a positive outlook on life can keep you healthy.
Though scientists aren't sure exactly how optimism promotes good health,
they suspect it has to do with the effects of your mental outlook on
immune function. From laughter to tears, from friendship to romantic
love, your emotions and attitudes all have a bearing on promoting good
health.
If you always see the negatives of things it's time to change... Yes you
can change! Studies have shown that you can actually "change your mind"
by changing your body language. Smiling on the outside will send a
message to your brain, which will "assume" that you're happy. Walking
tall and meeting people's glance will likewise "tell" your brain that
you are confident and upbeat. It will tell others the same thing. The
positive feedback you get from them will reinforce your feelings of
optimism.

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
A weepy,
smelly food that is probably the most consumed of any vegetable!
Bad breathe or just the food you ate?
The food this week is the ever popular and most consumed vegetable, the
onion. Comes in many sizes, shapes and colors along with a second hand
odoriferous offensive smell! "It's not good for your friends, but it is
good for your health," said the lead researcher, Dr. Rui Hai Liu, a
chemist in The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry department of
food science.
The bulbous onion and its numerous relatives belong to a flower family
namely the Lily family. How can something so smelly come from a flower
family? I don't have the answer but that is a good question! Nature is a
mystery in a lot of areas and this is one of those!
Some of these alliums are distinctly ornamental; a few others, notably
garlic, leek, Welsh onion, and chive, are common vegetables. All of the
edible forms have related flavors and odors that are due principally to
a volatile, irritating substance.
The word "onion" comes from the Middle English unyun, from the French
oignon, which came in turn from the Latin unio, meaning "onion." Ancient
names for this plant in Sanskrit, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin are
apparently unrelated, indicating widespread culture of onions from
prehistoric times.
Onions can be divided into two categories: spring/summer fresh onions
and fall/winter storage onions.
Spring/summer fresh onions are available in yellow, red and white
throughout their season, March through August. Fresh onions can be
identified by their thin, light-colored skins. Because they have a
higher water content, they are typically sweeter and milder than storage
onions. This higher water content also makes them more susceptible to
bruising.
With their delicate taste, fresh onions are an ideal choice for salads
and other fresh and lightly-cooked dishes.
Fall/winter storage onions are available August through April. Also
available in yellow, red, purple and white, storage onions have multiple
layers of thick, dark, papery skins. Storage onions have an intense
flavor and a higher percentage of solids.
Storage onions are the best choice for savory dishes that require longer
cooking times or more flavor.
Onions are low in calories yet add abundant flavor to a wide variety of
foods. Averaging about 30 calories per serving, onions are sodium, fat,
and cholesterol free, and provide dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin B6,
potassium, and other key nutrients.
Mild sweet onions varieties are:
Spanish onions: known for their mild and delicately sweet flavor.
Bermuda onions: another category of mild onions that come in red,
white, or yellow.
Walla-Walla Sweet onions: originally came from Corsica at the
beginning of the 20th century and arrived in Walla-Walla, Washington
where they are grown today.
Texas Sweets: available mid spring through early summer.
Research shows that onions may help guard against many chronic diseases.
That's probably because onions contain generous amounts of a flavonoid
called quercetin. Other sources are tea and apples, but research shows
that absorption of quercetin from onions is twice that from tea and more
than three times that from apples. Studies have shown that quercetin
protects against cataracts, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
In addition, onions contain a variety of other naturally occurring
chemicals known as organosulfur compounds that have been linked to
lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
In Chinese medicine, globe onions (allium cepa) are said to calm the
liver, moisten the intestines, and benefit the lungs. Raw onions are
prescribed for constipation, for lowering high blood pressure, and for
healing wounds or ulcers of the skin. Spring onions, or scallions (allium
fistulosum), are used to induce sweating. One application for the common
cold is to take 20 spring onions and simmer them with rice to make
porridge. Add a little vinegar and eat while it is warm. Then wrap
yourself up in blankets to induce sweating. Works like a charm, but is
it the onion rice soup or the sweating?
Some health studies have shown raw onions to be effective in lowering
overall cholesterol while raising HDLs, the good cholesterol.
Additionally, onions kill infectious bacteria, a help in controlling
blood sugar, aid in dissolving blood clots, and help to prevent cancer.
Onions were used extensively by the ancient Egyptians, as shown by
drawings and inscriptions on their monuments. The Bible states that
during the wanderings of the Israelites in the wilderness, they longed
for the onions, leeks, and garlic they had had in Egypt.
In the first century many varieties of onion were known: long, round,
red, yellow, white, strong, and mild kinds. For a time in the Middle
Ages it appears that the onion was less popular than leek and garlic,
while now the reverse is true.
The onion was introduced by the Spanish into the West Indies soon after
their discovery. From there it soon spread to all parts of the Americas.
Onions were grown by the earliest colonists and soon afterward by the
Indians.
The Welsh onion - A. fistulosum - never forms a rounded bulb-only
one to several long white scallions. This form is most popular in the
Orient, but is grown almost everywhere. In Japan it is often incorrectly
called "Japanese leek."
One form of onion, the so-called Egyptian tree onion, or top onion,
produces "sets" - tiny bulbs - at the top of the stalk instead of
flowers and seeds.
The leek - A. porrum- like the Welsh onion, forms only a cylindrical
instead of a rounded bulb. The leaf of the leek, however, is flattened
and solid, while the leaf of the onion is cylindrical and hollow.
In the first century the Romans considered that the best leeks came from
Egypt, where they had been known in earliest Biblical times. The Emperor
Nero is reported to have been nicknamed Porrophagus because of his
inordinate appetite for leeks. He imagined that frequent eating of leeks
improved his voice! He could have right!
In the 6th century the Welsh won a victory over the Saxons and
attributed their success to the leeks they wore to distinguish
themselves in battle. What a smelly fight that must have been!
"Know your onions" was a term coined in the 1920s to indicate that the
many varieties of onions that were cultivated over the years never
acquired standardized names from one locale to another.
Leeks have been common all over Europe for as long as we have
records of food plants. In America, by 1775, they were cultivated by the
Indians as well as the colonists.
Chive - A. schoenoprasum - is an Old World plant now found wild
in modern Italy and Greece. It is believed to be native to the eastern
Mediterranean. The word "chive" is an Old French form of the French cive,
derived from the Latin cepa, meaning "onion." Grown for hundreds of
years in European gardens and in the British Isles.
The chive has beautiful blue flowers, but they produce no seed. It is
propagated by planting the bulbs, which increase in number each year,
forming dense clumps.
You can see that onions are not common and many types exist for our
eating pleasure!
Onions add flavor to all types of foods while adding healthy nutrients.
Eat and enjoy!

How Did That
Drug Get On The Market?
© By Lena Sanchez
It's simple yet overlooked marketing technique for the drug
industry.
What the
average person does not comprehend is how drug companies quietly
and very subtly start to lobby and familiarize the medical
community and the world with a disease before they push a drug
to counteract an illness/disease!
Example; In November 2001 a California firm offering "business
intelligence" announced, "43% of all women over 18 experience
sexual dysfunction . . . Greater public awareness and acceptance
of SD [sexual dysfunction] as a common and treatable disease
will heavily influence market growth, predominantly for women."
In August 2002 a company advertising trials of a new drug for
"female sexual arousal disorder" prominently cited the figure in
its press release. That release quoted a Dr Sweeney saying that
40% of women have the dysfunction in one form or another, "but
not all have the most severe form of the disease." Ever heard
of SD as a disease prior to that?
One of
the milestones in the making of that disorder was a JAMA article
in February 1999 titled "Sexual dysfunction in the United
States: prevalence and predictors." Two of the authors of
that article, later admitted to close ties to Pfizer
Pharmaceuticals (Business Intelligence), said that for women
aged 18-59, the "total prevalence of sexual dysfunction" was
43%, a figure picked up by the medical community and now widely
cited in both scientific and lay media as gospel truth.
First let's see how 43% came to be!
A University of Chicago sociology professor Ed Laumann and
colleagues reanalyzed a slice of data from a 1992 survey and
came up with serious questions about the 43% figure so aptly
bantered about these days. That figure came from a study of
around 1500 women who were asked to answer yes or no to whether
they had experienced any of seven problems, for two months or
more, during the previous year, including a lack of desire for
sex, anxiety about sexual performance, and difficulties with
lubrication. If the women answered yes to just one of the seven
questions, they were included in a group characterized as having
SD (sexual dysfunction). No mention of what time of the month or
what circumstances led up to their answer.
The JAMA article stated that its data was "not equivalent to
clinical diagnosis,"1 yet this was overlooked, and some
leading sex researchers have raised serious concerns about the
figure's constant misuse.
One of those concerned was Dr Sandra Leiblum, professor of
psychiatry at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and a clinical
psychologist. She believes real dysfunction is much less
prevalent than 43%, and that the figure has contributed to an
overmedicalization of women's sexuality, where changes in sexual
desire, from time to time, is the norm. "I think there is
dissatisfaction and perhaps disinterest among a lot of women,
but that doesn't mean they have a disease," she said during an
interview at a New York educational workshop.
The director of the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University, Dr
John Bancroft, believes the term "dysfunction" is highly
misleading, and he is one of several researchers critical of the
corporate sponsored 1998 definition. 4 He argues that an
inhibition of sexual desire is in many situations a healthy and
functional response for women faced with stress, tiredness, or
threatening patterns of behavior from their partners. "The
danger of portraying sexual difficulties as a dysfunction is
that it is likely to encourage doctors to prescribe drugs to
change sexual function when the attention should be paid to
other aspects of the woman's life. It's also likely to make
women think they have a malfunction when they do not," he said
during a telephone interview with RFW. In response, Laumann
defends his use of the term "dysfunction" but concedes that many
women among his 43% are "perfectly normal" and that a lot of
their problems "arise out of perfectly reasonable responses of
the human organism to challenges and stress."
New York University's clinical associate professor of
psychiatry, Dr Leonore Tiefer, contends that the medical model
itself is severely limited for dealing with problems of
sexuality because of its mind-body split, biological
reductionism, focus on diseases rather than people, and reliance
on norms. She claims pharmacological research oversimplifies the
sexual difficulties of both men and women because it "promotes
genital function as the centerpiece of sexuality and ignores
everything else"
Could this all be another ploy by the pharmaceutical company to
come up with a disease to fit a drug they are working on and
about to release? Exactly what it is! This happened with Viagra
before it was released, it happened with other drugs in the past
and will continue to happen as the drug companies come up with
more drugs. Vioxx was removed but immediately thereafter a small
blurb appeared in newspapers and on some TV news that a Merck
had new arthritis medication was in the works. So Arcoxia
followed Vioxx onto the market yet is the same COX-2 inhibitor
as Vioxx! Do I believe it will be better than Vioxx? NO!
How about the commercials, of the past, of premenstrual gals in
the department store dressing rooms trying on clothes and the
bloating they were experiencing and then it moved to the nasty
oubursts and the term PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder)?
The adds for Serafem coming out shortly after those ads appeared
for a so-called PMDD disorder. Serafem being nothing more than
the very dangerous antidepressant drug Prozac repackaged in
lavender pink, marketed to women for PMDD. I like what the late
Nicholas Regush, health investigative reporter's question in
regards to the FDA approving Serafem. Were members of its
advisory committee suffering emotionally from Pre-BS
Affliction (PBSA) when they approved Sarafem/Prozac
for PMDD? I would like to add that they are still suffering
from PBSA. You know the term BS, right?
As early as two to five years prior to release, the occurrence
of "informational" meetings and speeches spouting the latest
diagnoses begin for the medical world. All set up to get a new
classified disease and their drug paid for by insurance
companies and recognized by the medical community. These
meetings are published as "informational" by the news media.
Informational? Like a fox in the chicken house...
Those meetings are all a forerunner of a new disease that now
has a HCFA number for billing insurances. I've seen it happen
over and over and even attended a workshop or two paid for by
the pharmaceutical company working on a new medication and a
coined disease/illness!
There are always a few people who see through their smoke
screens but usually lose in the attempt to thwart the
pharmaceutical industry's goal of billions of dollars in their
pockets! Those thwarted are labeled as crackpots or some such
name
Pay close attention to what is prescribed for your problem.

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT

Report Examines Safety of
Nanotechnology
Jan 11, 2006
By ANDREW BRIDGES
WASHINGTON (AP) - From toothpaste to trousers, dozens of everyday
products contain materials made through the blossoming science of
nanotechnology - but laws safeguarding the public's health and safety
aren't developing nearly as quickly, according to a new report.
Few will say whether the nano materials, often hundreds of times smaller
than the diameter of a human hair, are unquestionably safe or dangerous
given the lack of definitive research into the matter.
However, Terry Davies, author of the report being released Wednesday,
said it's time to start discussing changing laws - and perhaps drafting
new ones - to identify and protect the public from any risks that may
crop up in the future.
"The technology is new but it's not so new that it's not being
commercialized," said Davies, a senior adviser to the Project on
Emerging Nanotechnologies at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for
Scholars and a former Environmental Protection Agency official.
Nanotechnology involves the manufacture and manipulation of materials at
the molecular or atomic level - the smallest things get. At that scale,
materials are measured in nanometers or billionths of a meter. Nanoscale
materials, including particles used today in stain-resistant pants and
suntan lotions, are generally less than 100 nanometers in diameter. A
sheet of paper, in comparison, is a whopping 100,000 nanometers thick.
Nano boosters herald the potential for small-scale materials to have
enormous effects on much of what we do, including develop drugs and sop
up toxic pollution. Nano materials already are used in at least 80
consumer products made by U.S. companies, according to Small Times
Magazine, which covers the nanotechnology industry.
U.S. regulatory agencies, including the EPA and Food and Drug
Administration, say their regulatory options are adequate to cover nano-engineered
materials, said Clayton Teague, director of the National Nanotechnology
Coordination Office. Officials continue to evaluate the field as more
studies are done, and updating the rules or adding ones now would be
premature, he said.
"Until we have information that there are truly inadequacies in existing
regulations, any additional regulations beyond what we already would
have would be burdensome to industry and the advancement of the field,"
Teague said.
The sometimes unpredictable behavior of materials at the nanoscale does
give some pause. Even seemingly subtle changes in the size of particles
can precipitate wildly different changes in the basic properties of
those materials, including their toxicity.
Laws like the Clean Water Act or Toxic Substances Control Act lack
either the authority or resources - or both - to adequately address
those sorts of peculiarities inherent to nanotechnology, Davies said.
Others, like the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, are probably adequate when
it comes to governing the safety of nano materials in food and drugs,
the report said. But that act falls flat when it comes to cosmetics,
which remain essentially unregulated by the FDA, Davies and others said.
"It's a list of things they can't do because the list of things they can
do is practically nonexistent," Davies said.
Davies said he hopes the report will spark discussion, in part to help
skirt the pitfalls that have befallen other emerging technologies.
"We've learned with biotech and nuclear power, if there are not adequate
safeguards, the public is going to resist the technology and it won't
meet its potential," Davies said.
