Industry Money May Bias Drink Studies

Does milk lower blood pressure? Does juice prevent heart disease? Beverage studies were four to eight times more likely to reach sweet conclusions about health effects when industry was footing the bill, a new report contends.

Its authors claim to have done the first systematic analysis of such studies published from 1999 through 2003 in hundreds of journals around the world.

"We found evidence that's strongly suggestive of bias," said Dr. David Ludwig, an obesity specialist at Children's Hospital Boston who led the work, which was published Monday in the online science journal PLoS Medicine. The consumer advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest also participated.

Biased science can affect consumer behavior, doctor recommendations and even federal regulation of marketing claims for such products, Ludwig said.
 
"I don't blame researchers for this problem. I think most are highly ethical and dedicated to science. The problem is that when government underfunds nutrition research, industry money becomes hard to resist," he said.

However, beverage industry folks say the authors have a slant, too.

"This is yet another attack on industry by activists who demonstrate their own biases in their review by looking only at the funding source and not judging the research on its merits," says a statement by Susan Neely, president of the American Beverage Association. "The science is what matters - nothing else."

Public health experts who promote dietary guidelines are biased toward their own advice, said Greg Miller, a nutrition biochemist who heads research for the National Dairy Council. The council requires its funded researchers to publish results in journals that require review by outside scientists and to disclose who pays for their work.

"Everybody brings a point of view to the table, and in the long run, that's probably a good thing," Miller said.

But the authors say this point of view appears to influence results.

They used Medline, a compendium of scientific literature, to identify 538 studies about soda, milk or juice involving people, not animals. They targeted 206 that made a health claim directly related to the drink being studied - for example, bone fractures related to calcium and milk intake, or immune system benefits from antioxidants in juice.

Of the 206 studies, only 111 gave information on funding: 22 percent were fully funded by industry and 32 percent got some industry money.

One group of reviewers analyzed study conclusions and classified them as favorable, neutral or unfavorable to the beverage in question. Another independent group of reviewers determined whether a study would help, harm or have no effect on the finances of the study sponsor.

For example, a negative finding about soda would harm a soda sponsor but could help a dairy producer.

Overall, studies funded entirely by industry were four to eight times more likely to be favorable to their sponsors.

None of the experiments fully funded by industry that tested beverages with a control group found fault with the drinks.

The authors' work was paid for by a grant from the Charles H. Hood Foundation, which finances research on children's issues at Ludwig's hospital. Co-author Dr. Lenard Lesser also had funding from a fellowship at the Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

The beverage association complained that Ludwig is on the editorial board of the journal that published his study. However, Ludwig noted that the board has more than 100 scientists on it, and said his study went through an independent review.

An Expose of Industry and Government Cover-Up on the DANGERS of the Genetically Engineered (rBGH) Milk You're Drinking

CHICAGO, Illinois-- Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, professor emeritus of environmental medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health and world renowned author, has announced the publication of his new book, "What's in Your Milk?", a powerful expose of the dangers of Monsanto's genetically engineered (rBGH) milk, and the company's no-holds-barred conspiracy to suppress this information.

rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone) is a genetically engineered, potent variant of the natural growth hormone produced by cows. Manufactured by Monsanto, it is sold to dairy farmers under the trade name POSILAC. Injection of this hormone forces cows to increase their milk production by about 10%. Monsanto has stated that about one third of dairy cows are in herds where the hormone is used.

Monsanto, supported by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), insist that rBGH milk is indistinguishable from natural milk, and that it is safe for consumers. This is blatantly false: rBGH makes cows sick. Monsanto has been forced to admit to about 20 toxic effects, including mastitis, on its Posilac label.

*rBGH milk is contaminated by pus, due to the mastitis commonly induced by rBGH, and antibiotics used to treat the mastitis. *rBGH milk is chemically, and nutritionally different than natural milk. *Milk from cows injected with rBGH is contaminated with the hormone, traces of which are absorbed through the gut into the blood. *rBGH milk is supercharged with high levels of a natural growth factor (IGF-1), which is readily absorbed through the gut. *Excess levels of IGF-1 have been incriminated as a cause of breast, colon, and prostate cancers. IGF-1 blocks natural defense mechanisms against early submicroscopic cancers. *rBGH factory farms pose a major threat to the viability of small dairy farms. *rBGH enriches Monsanto, while posing dangers, without any benefits, to consumers, especially in view of the current national surplus of milk.

Of still greater concern, based on 37 published scientific studies as detailed in the book, excess levels of IGF-1 in rBGH milk pose major risks of breast, colon and prostate cancers.

Monsanto's corporate recklessness, compounded by FDA's complicity and refusal to require labeling of rBGH milk, more than justify the rejection of any assurances of its safety. Of further interest is the critical relevance of this information to the ongoing growing concerns and debate on genetically engineered foods, including irrefutable evidence discrediting the "trust us" safety assurances of Monsanto, and other industries.

The book also presents resource materials, including listings of national and international anti-biotech, public health, veterinary and animal rights activist groups. Also listed are rBGH-free U.S. dairy producers, such as Horizon Organic, and Swiss Valley Farms.

During the 16th century, the plant was grown in Italy and France. It began to be commercially grown in the United States in the 1920s. The word "broccoli" derives from the Italian 'Brocco' meaning arm branch. Broccoli is related to cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. The most common type of broccoli sold in the U.S. is called sprouting, or Italian green, broccoli; its light-green stalks are topped by umbrella-shaped clusters of purplish-green florets. It is also known as Calabrese, after the Italian province of Calabria, where it was first grown. Other broccoli types are:

Broccolini: a cross between broccoli and Chinese kale.

 

Broccoflower: a cross between broccoli and cauliflower, comes in a single large head, like cauliflower, but is green rather than white.

 

Broccoli sprouts: a particularly concentrated source of sulforaphane. 3 day old sprouts have 20 to 50 times the nutrients as full grown broccoli... They're expensive, but a little goes a long way. 
 
Broccoli is an antioxidant rich food filled with the minerals Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium. Rich in vitamins such as; Vitamin C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Vitamin B-6, Folate, Folic acid, Vitamin B-12, Vitamin A, Retinol and Vitamin E.  broccoli really delivers in the nutrition department. 
 
A University of Illinois-Urbana study found that rats eating a combination of broccoli and tomatoes had a lower rate of tumor growth than rats eating broccoli or tomatoes separately.  Researcher John Erdman said the two foods bring out the best in each other, and maximize the cancer-fighting effect of the nutrients they contain. You can mix the two for optimum illness fighters!
 
When choosing broccoli in the market, select organic heads that have tight and compact bud clusters with an even dark color. The stems should be a lighter green than the buds and easy to pierce with a fingernail. Avoid stalks with yellowed or open bud clusters and stems that are hard and dry. Broccoli can be stored, unwashed, in a plastic bag in the refrigerator crisper for days. Before use, wash by rinsing in purified/filtered water with a splash of vinegar for disinfectant.   

Storing broccoli: Refrigeration slows the conversion of sugar to lignin, thereby preserving texture and flavor; keeping broccoli chilled also protects vitamin C content. Store broccoli in an open plastic bag in the refrigerator crisper, which will provide the right balance of humidity and oxygen. Do not wash broccoli before storing; although it needs moisture to remain fresh, any water on its surface will encourage spoilage. Fresh broccoli is best if used within a day or two of purchase, but it will keep for up to four days in a crisper. Once cooked, any leftovers may be refrigerated for two to three days in a tightly covered container.
 
Our favorite ways of eating broccoli are steamed with a splash of seasoned rice vinegar, or raw with other veggies as a salad with lemon juice with virgin olive oil or flax seed oil as dressing. Also I like raw broccoli flowerets with sliced tomatoes and sliced sweet onions. Grandchildren like them with a bit of ranch dressing, which I don't think of as healthy, but a little once in a while isn't going to kill them and it gets them to eat the broccoli! I try to make Ranch dressing fresh so it's not quite as lethal.
 
Here is a great recipe:

 
Broccoli with Garlic
 
1 bunch of broccoli, OR 1 pound of frozen chopped broccoli
2 medium fresh tomatoes (cut into bite size pieces)
6 garlic cloves 
1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
2 tablespoons purified/filtered water
1/4 teaspoon hot (cayenne) pepper (optional)
 
Wash broccoli and cut into small florets.   Cut the tender parts of the stem into smallish cubes or save add to stew or make Broccoli Slaw.
 
Steam broccoli in until barely tender and still bright green. Don't overcook!  For all cruciferous, this is a very important guideline!
 
Place olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.  Chop or mince the garlic.   When the oil is hot, add sea salt, then the garlic.  Saute' stirring frequently, just until the garlic starts to soften.  Quickly add the water, and the cayenne if desired.  Turn heat low and simmer for a couple of minutes.
 
Place the broccoli and fresh tomatoes in a large glass or crockery serving bowl.  Pour the garlic mixture over it, mixing gently to coat each piece evenly.  Serve and enjoy.
 
Chill leftovers and add to salad the next day.
 
Now go get some broccoli for your next meal, enjoy and know you are eating for health!

Cold Medicine Risky for Babies, Toddlers

ATLANTA (AP) - More than 1,500 toddlers and babies wound up in emergency rooms over a two-year period and three died because of bad reactions to cold or cough medicine, federal health officials reported Thursday.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned parents not to give common over-the-counter cold remedies to children under 2 years old without consulting a doctor.

The deaths of three infants 6 months or younger in 2005 led to an investigation that showed the children all had high levels of the nasal decongestant pseudoephedrine, up to 14 times the amount recommended for children ages 2 to 12. The study found 1,519 ER cases from 2004 and 2005 involving young children and cold medicine.

The CDC said it's not known how much cold or cough medicine can cause illness or death in children under 2 years old, but there are no approved dosing recommendations by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for that age group.
 
The American Academy of Pediatrics first advised parents in 1997 about the risks of complications and overdose potential with certain cough suppressants. Last year the American College of Chest Physicians advised doctors not to recommend cough suppressants and over-the-counter cough medications to young children because of the risks.

Dr. Michael Shannon, chief of emergency medicine at Children's Hospital Boston, said it's common, especially in the winter, to see emergency room cases of toddlers given cough or cold medicine.

"Pediatricians have for years, particularly for the last five years, been for the most part trying to dissuade parents from giving young children common cold preparations," Shannon said.

Dr. Michael Marcus, director of pediatric pulmonology, allergy and immunology at Maimonides Infants and Children's Hospital in New York, said, "The best thing (parents) can do is support with fluids and lots of kisses and time, because lots of infections are viral and will pass in a few days. The medications have a greater potential for harm than the infections you are trying to treat."
