If this gets out today I will be totally surprised... My computer change over is occupying all my time to reinstall all my programs and a lot of them do not work with Windows XP so I am having to copy text into programs that will work... Lots of headaches! 

Have to get my tax stuff all together as well. Choose decor for the new addition and put up with lying sub contractors that tell you they will be here and not show up with no call to say why or when that will change... What happened to consideration and honesty? I have not seen much of it lately...

Think of me with a prayerful heart that I manage to get through all this with humility and kindness...

Something To Think About

Theory and practice are often miles apart. 

A Reader of HSI, Thomas writes;

"Grapes are very dangerous to eat unless you can find organic
ones, they are out there but very expensive. The grape growers
use more pesticides and other poisons than any other food
growing industry. It is common knowledge that the migrants and
their families who work in this industry are suffering
irreversible damage to their bodies and dying from the chemicals 
that are sprayed on the grapes. When they are harvested, sent to 
market, and the consumer takes them home and cleans them by
rinsing or soaking them - this does not remove all of the
poison. No one knows what the long-term health effects are for
people who consume grapes. Until the grape growers clean up
their act no one should eat them and especially not give them to 
their children." 

Thomas says that he contacted a well-known grape juice producer
to ask if the company's products contained insecticide residue.
They responded with information about where the grapes are
grown, but no mention of insecticide. 

And Thomas adds, "You will find the same problem with wines,
unless they are organic." 

So in theory, grapes and grape products may be very healthy for
you. But in practice, you might need to be choosy about your
source of grapes in order to enjoy all the benefits without a
dose of unwanted toxins.

STATINS MAY CAUSE...MEMORY PROBLEMS

SAN DIEGO (UPI) -- New studies suggest some people may suffer amnesia and other problems after taking statins -- a widely prescribed new class of cholesterol-lowering drugs. Beatrice Golomb at the University of California-San Diego, is studying the effects of statins on cognition and mood. New Scientist magazine says she has documented at least 100 cases of memory problems possibly caused by statins. Included are 30 cases of transient amnesia.

Although rather rare, with tens of millions of people taking the drugs worldwide, such problems could affect thousands of patients. New Scientist said one reason Golomb believes statins are to blame is that in more than half the amnesia cases, people suffered a second episode -- a far higher relapse rate than normal. A team from Duke University also found approximately 60 accounts of memory problems associated with statins. In some cases the patients' memory problems returned only when they resumed taking statins.

Researchers said although statins are generally considered very safe, it would not be surprising if they affect neural function. The drugs block the synthesis of cholesterol, a key ingredient in cell membranes. Statins are prescribed under the brand names Lipitor, Zocor, Pravachol, Lescol, and Mevacor.

FDA OKs Lilly Drug, Doctors Skeptical

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Eli Lilly and Co. <LLY.N> on Monday said it received U.S. regulatory clearance to sell a drug that treats the depressive phase of bipolar disorder with a combination of Prozac and another Lilly medication.

But some doctors expressed skepticism over the efficacy of the drug named Symbyax

Warning over link between deodorants and breast cancer

A controversial study which suggests a potential link between a common chemical found in cosmetics and deodorants and breast cancer is published this week. 
Researchers looked at 20 human breast tumours and found synthetic chemicals known as parabens in 18 of them, with high concentrations in four of the malignancies. 

It is the first time parabens have been detected within tumours, suggesting that the man-made chemicals have accumulated in the breast tissue after being absorbed through the skin. 

But the study raises more questions than it answers, and cancer charities last night urged caution over the results, stressing that they did not prove a link between the cosmetics, deodorants or antiperspirants and the development of cancer. 

The study, published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology , did not show if the chemicals are also found in healthy women's breasts, or what role they might play, if any, in the growth of tumours. 

Parabens are synthetic chemicals used to preserve goods from cosmetics such as face cream, foundation and face masks through to the methyl and propyl forms of the chemical as food preservatives. They are also used industrially in oils, fats, shoe polish and glues. 

Dr Philippa Darbre, cancer researcher at the University of Reading, who carried out the study said: 'Finding these chemicals in human breast tumours does matter, because we know from other work that they can mimic the way oestrogen works to drive the growth of cancer. 

'This is the first step; we need to see whether the chemicals are present in the healthy tissue and, if so, what the concentration levels are. But we have detected these intact molecules and I don't think it can be ignored. 

'For years people have said there is no way they could enter the body because of our physiology, but I think it is to do with a physical overload of chemicals and that some are being absorbed by the skin. Women managed for centuries without these materials and it has to be asked if we really need them now.' 

However, some of her previous research has been dismissed by scientists who believe there is no clear evidence that the chemicals are linked to breast cancer. 

Instead, they blame an increase in obesity and women having children later in life as the main reasons for the rise in breast cancer cases, from 20,000 cases in the late 1970s to almost 40,000 cases a year now. 

Darbre has carried out other studies which she says show a link between deodorants and cancer. Previously she looked at aluminium and zirconium contained in the materials, which she suggested would have an effect on the DNA controlling cancer growth. 

For years, there have been concerns over whether deodorants or antiperspirants could cause the cancer, although often the rumours seemed to be more urban myth than reality. 

Scientists have explained that physiologically it would be very hard for the chemicals to penetrate to the breast, as the lymph glands would usually clear away any toxins. 

Dr Philip Harvey, European Editor of the Journal of Applied Toxicology, said the results should be interpreted with caution. He added that the finding was important because it showed that 'these oestrogenic chemicals can be detected in the breast and are therefore absorbed'. 

Karol Sikora, professor of oncology at Imperial College London, said: 'We are all exposed to all kinds of chemicals, but it doesn't mean they all cause cancer. The question is whether the chemicals would have an impact on the hormones, and also what level you would see in a healthy breast tissue.' 

Dr Richard Sullivan, Head of Clinical Programmes at Cancer Research UK, agreed: 'It should be noted that the sample size is very small. No causal relationship has ever been found between underarm cosmetics containing parabens and breast cancer.'

Tiny particles 'threaten brain'

Microscopic pollutant particles given off by traffic and industry can enter the bloodstream and the brain after being inhaled, scientists have found. 
The particles are known to cause lung damage in susceptible patients, and are implicated in cardiovascular disease. 

Experiments on rats and humans have now discovered they can penetrate further into the body, with unknown results. 

UK scientists are calling for vigilance over the finding, and over the possible effects of a new group of particles. 

These objects are being created in the burgeoning field of nanotechnology, in which atoms and molecules in materials are manipulated to exploit novel and sometimes unusual properties. 

Mindful of the potential health impact of such particles, the UK Government has asked the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering to review the current status of the science and assess if there is a need for new regulation. 

Subtle infiltrators 

Many of us are routinely exposed to particles from diesel vehicle fumes (these are normally known as PM10, from their size), which penetrate buildings and are ubiquitous in cities. 

Some cooking stoves emit high levels of particles as well. 

There is also occupational exposure for people making products like sunblock cream, inks, photocopier toners, and working with welding equipment. 

Ken Donaldson, Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, UK, said these sorts of particle were known to cause damage at the point of entry to the human body. 

What was new, he said, was the discovery by researchers in Europe and the US that they "can get to areas that bigger particles cannot reach". 

Patients who inhaled radioactive ultrafine carbon particles displayed traces of it in their bloodstream not long afterwards. 

Experimental rats which inhaled similar particles showed a marked decline in particulate level in their lungs after six or seven days. 

Unknown hazard 

In the olfactory bulb and other parts of the brain, though, levels (although lower than in the lungs) remained relatively stable over the same period. 

These very small pieces of matter are called nanoparticles, defined as anything smaller than 100 nanometres in size. A nanometre is one-billionth of a metre, 80,000 times smaller than a human hair. 

Professor Donaldson said: "We are already exposed to nanoparticles of different kinds. We already recognise that there is some ill-health associated with these exposures. 

"But they may also translocate away from their point of entry into the blood or the brain. We are not sure what the consequences of this are yet. 

"The nanotechnology revolution may design particles that are very different chemically from the ones we are exposed to, and they might have very different properties that made them more harmful. We should be vigilant." 

He told BBC News Online: "I think there could be an increased future risk for all of us, and also a higher risk for people exposed at present to nanoparticles at work, though it's impossible to say how much bigger their risk is. 

"These particles are not things you can trap with a filter. But they do disperse rapidly, unlike asbestos." 

Nanotechnology involves building working devices, systems and materials molecule by molecule, and exploiting the unique and powerful electrical, physical and chemical properties found at that scale. 

It has developed from advances in microscopy, materials science, molecular-level manipulation, and the relationship between classical and quantum physics. 

The UK's Royal Microcopical Society and the Institute of Physics are holding a conference on the health implications of nanoparticles on 13 and 14 January at the Daresbury Laboratories in northern England.
