Something To Think About

Flu Virus Resistant
to 2 Drugs, CDC Says
Jan 2006
By DANIEL YEE
ATLANTA (AP) - The government, for the first time, is urging doctors not
to prescribe two antiviral drugs commonly used to fight influenza after
discovering that the predominant strain of the virus has built up high
levels of resistance to them at alarming speed.
A whopping 91 percent of virus samples tested by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention this flu season proved resistant to rimantadine
and amantadine, a huge increase since last year, when only 11 percent
were.
The discovery adds to worries about how to fight bird flu should it
start spreading among people. Health officials had hoped to conserve use
of two newer antiviral drugs, Tamiflu and Relenza, because they show
activity against bird flu, unlike the older drugs.
Now, because of the resistance issue, the newer drugs are being
recommended for ordinary flu, increasing the chances that resistance
will develop more rapidly to them, too, as they become more commonly
used.
The newer drugs work against Type A and B influenza strains; the older
ones work only against Type A, but cost less and are available in
generic form.
CDC officials took the unusual step of calling a Saturday news
conference to announce that the predominant strain this season - the
type A H3N2 influenza strain - was resistant to the older drugs.
"Clinicians should not use rimantadine and amantadine ... because the
drugs will not be effective," said CDC director Dr. Julie Gerberding.
She said the lab tests, which CDC scientists had been analyzing since
Friday, surprised health officials and the health agency rushed to get
the word out.
"I don't think we were expecting it to be so dramatic so quickly this
year," Gerberding said. "We just didn't feel it was responsible to wait
three more days during a holiday weekend to let clinicians know."
The CDC tested 120 influenza A virus samples from the H3N2 strain and
found that 109 were resistant to the two drugs. Two years ago, less than
2 percent of the samples were resistant. Last year, 11 percent were.
Gerberding said the agency didn't know how the resistance occurred,
saying it may have been the result of a mutation in the virus or overuse
of the drugs abroad, such as in countries that permit the drugs to be
purchased without a prescription.
One flu expert, Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University, said the
development was "disconcerting" as flu now has joined the ranks of other
diseases, such as tuberculosis and HIV, that recently have acquired the
ability to resist front-line medications.
But Schaffner said doctors have other options to fight influenza.
The CDC said that all H3 and H1 influenza viruses the agency has tested
so far are susceptible to the newer antivirals: Tamiflu, also known as
oseltamivir, and Relenza, also called zanamivir. Doctors also recommend
an annual flu shot to help prevent getting influenza in the first place.
"Tamiflu is now readily available everywhere - in most places, it is the
primary antiviral being used" against flu, Schaffner said. "But we're
always a bit frustrated when one of the therapeutic agents is
foreclosed. It makes every infectious disease doctor worry a little
bit."
That's especially worry with fears that bird flu could become turn into
a human epidemic. The bird flu spreading through Asia infects people
relatively rarely, but officials worry that it might morph into a form
that spreads more easily, triggering a worldwide super-flu outbreak.
The CDC said it planned to alert doctors throughout the country via its
emergency Health Alert Network and through a special edition of its
weekly journal, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
Each year, the flu kills about 36,000 people, and some 200,000 are
hospitalized because of it in the United States, the CDC said. As of
Dec. 31, the latest CDC data available, flu activity was only considered
widespread in seven U.S. states, mainly in the Southwest and West:
Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California.

Rimantadine Info
Amantadine info
LENA'S COMMENT: One erroneous quote in this article is the fact
that each year 36,000 people die from the flu. There is an exception to
that number and that was last year (2004-2005 season) when there was a
huge shortage of flu vaccine making it impossible for so many to get
it... That tells me the flu vaccine isn't necessary and should be
avoided like the plague... This article also says that Tamiflu is an
acceptable alternative yet tests have already proven that isn't true
that it is so mutated that it isn't effective against much of anything
at this point in time... What are you alternatives? Build your immune
system so it will deflect any virus that comes toward your body...

TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Eating two grapefruits a day
can reduce gum bleeding for those who suffer from gum disease.
A two-week study showed that eating two grapefruits a day raised vitamin
C levels for all participants. The vitamin C level of smokers in the
study almost doubled.
Grapefruit increases blood levels of vitamin C, which promotes healing,
and also lessens damage caused by free radical molecules. This aids in
the repair of gums.
LENA'S COMMENT:
Is it the Vitamin C, the other antioxidants or the ant inflammatory
properties of the grapefruit. They did not touch on those possibilities
so I wouldn't say it's absolutely why, but whatever the reason eat them
and have healthy gums!

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Tangy
vegetable, fruit or what?
This tangy flavorful herb/food/flavoring isn't really a fruit or
vegetable but a root, which could qualify as a vegetable!
It's a perennial herb Zingiber Officionale or commonly English name
Gingerroot. In the fresh Gingerroot state, it has a characteristic
staghorn-like appearance; dried ginger is usually sold in form of
off-white to very light brown powder or fresh whole or pieces. Ginger
root is a rhizome or underground stem and not considered an actual root.
Depending on the location it is being grown at, it is harvested nearly
year-round. It is ready for harvest about five months after planting.
The early harvests are used for ginger syrup and candied ginger. The
later harvests are usually sold as fresh ginger. It becomes hotter and
spicier, and better for homeopathic remedies, the longer it is in the
ground.
Ginger leaves are occasionally used for flavoring in ginger producing
countries.
Ginger and turmeric combine with citrus and maple syrup to make the
perfect blend of healing nutrients.
The English botanist William Roscoe (1753-1831) gave the plant the name
of
Zingiber officinale in an 1807 publication. The ginger family is a
tropical group especially abundant in Indo-Malaysia, consisting of more
than 1200 plant species. The genus Zingiber includes about 85 species of
aromatic herbs from East Asia and tropical Australia. The name of the
genus, Zingiber, derives from a Sanskrit word denoting "horn-shaped," in
reference to the protrusions on the rhizome. Major world producers
include Fiji, India, Jamaica, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and China. American
imports come from China, several Caribbean Islands, Africa, Central
America, Brazil, and Australia. Ginger is now commercially cultivated in
nearly every tropical and subtropical country in the world with arable
land for export crops. While in Hawaii last April I was privy to see
ginger growing in all it's beauty and several organic plots for personal
use as well as for sale... Fresh ginger and dried ginger are considered
two different commodities. In fact, one author of an early Chinese
herbal felt that they were so different that they must come from two
different plants! The dried root is known as Gan-jiang. The fresh root
is called Sheng-jiang.
Ginger having been around so long that its exact origin is unclear.
It reached the West at least two thousand years ago, recorded as a
subject of a Roman tax in the second century after being imported via
the Red Sea to Alexandria. Tariff duties appear in the records of
Marseilles in 1228 and in Paris by 1296. Ginger is known in England
before the Norman Conquest, as it is commonly found in the 11th century
Anglo-Saxon leech books. Ginger is detailed in a 13th century work,
"Physicians of Myddvai," a collection of recipes and prescriptions
written by a physician, Rhiwallon, and his three sons, by mandate of
Rhys Gryg, prince of South Wales (who died in 1233). By the 13th and
14th centuries it was familiar to English palates, and next to pepper,
was the most popular spice. A pound of ginger was then valued at the
price of one sheep. Ginger, as a product of the Far East, was indelibly
imprinted on the taste buds of Westerners before potatoes, tomatoes, and
corn were even known to exist by Europeans.
Medicinal properties
Ginger has been used for centuries in treating the common cold.
Additionally, it is an effective analgesic, anti-pyretic, anti-viral
agent. Asian cultures believe it prevents them from maladies found in
most countries such as hypertension, and in the prevention of
atherosclerosis. Other known benefits of ginger include its ability to
cleanse the colon, reduce spasms and cramps, stimulate circulation, and
aid metabolism. Many have used it to treat colitis, nausea, gas,
indigestion, bowel disorders, morning sickness, motion sickness,
vomiting, congestion, fever, and headaches. In spite of Westernized
medicine moving in on them Asian medicine still, for the most part, uses
it as a treatment for asthma, shortness of breath, water retention,
earache, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Homeopathic practitioners even
recommend it for sexual disorders. In some cultures over the centuries
it has been credited with the ability to treat arthritis, fevers, and
toothaches. It is said to have the ability to prevent internal blood
clots. An added benefit to Ginger is that it is a strong antioxidant and
effective microbial agent for sores and wounds.
Ginger in protecting and soothing the digestive system increases the pH
of stomach acid, reducing its acidity, thereby naturally lowers the rate
of gastric secretions, and increasing digestive enzyme activity. Rather
than blocking the feelings of nausea in the brain, it acts directly on
the stomach and liver to reduce nausea and vomiting. Ginger tincture -
root is soaked in alcohol and water - sometimes labeled as "drops" or
"extracts" - are available in health and natural food stores.
Recommended ten to twenty drops of ginger tincture in a little water
with meals to counteract indigestion or help fight early symptoms of
cold or flu.
Ginger root herb has no known harmful side effects, and is viewed as a
very safe herb. However, it has been known to cause heartburn in some
people. If such occurs, reduce dosage and try again or discontinue use.
In most American Asian restaurants shredded fresh ginger is offered as a
condiment to dishes and is found to be a common flavoring in most of
their dishes. Since I have not been to the orient I cannot absolutely
say how it is served over there.
Many people like raw ginger. Sometimes people will soak ginger in water
for several hours then added to the dish immediately before serving.
This gives it a more fresh, spicy and pungent taste. The freshness
decreases and the pungency increases when fresh ginger is cooked. Often
times, ginger is ground up into a powder and used in curries and spice
pastes.
Slices of ginger are used quite often to flavor foods that need to
simmer for long periods of time. The reason ginger is good for this is
because the slices release their flavor quite slowly.
Ginger tea can be made by cooking slices of fresh ginger in water for a
few minutes. It is a spicy and healthy drink that can be enjoyed in hot
tropical climates or in freezing cold climates. Below is a great tasting
and healthy detoxing, pain relieving and refreshing tea!
Ginger Healing Detox Tea with Turmeric
INGREDIENTS
2 cups water
1/8 teaspoon shredded ginger
1/2 teaspoon powdered turmeric
1 tablespoon maple syrup
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1. Bring water to a boil, then add herbs (1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger
may be used in place of shredded fresh). Simmer for 10 - 20 minutes.
2. Strain tea into a mug, add maple syrup and lemon, stirring to
combine. Drink warm.
Makes 1 serving.
Enjoy this pleasant food/herb/medicinal in all kinds of cookies, cakes,
tea, drinks or as a condiment with fish or fruits. I add a small piece
of fresh root to my juicer when I juice apples and carrots together for
a very pleasant flavor enhancer and nutrient enrichment.

Disciplined Doctors Not Required to Stop
Practicing Even Temporarily
This is
not a new topic nor am I into doctor bashing but having been
responsible for instigating and helping to remove one dangerous
doctors' license and attempting to remove another one
unsuccessfully, in the late 90's, I feel the need to again warn
you!
While
spending time in trial against the two bad doctors I can tell
you that absolutely no one ever knew about either of those
proceedings, because nothing was ever published to the public.
The one doctor, only sanctioned, is still out there practicing
bad medicine and probably hurting people and until an
organization called Public Citizen decided enough is enough no
one would ever know. I still do not understand why news people
don't find such things newsworthy? Now if a doctor is being sued
for millions of dollars it's newsworthy yet seldom does that
doctor lose his licenses when found guilty nor do they tell you
that either… Why? I can't prove my opinion so I will say nothing
but draw your won conclusion…
I only
know that of all the dozens of doctor's, over my twenty years of
working with and assisting them, I can say that "a good
bedside manner does not guarantee a doctor knows what he is
doing or is capable of being your doctor!"
Is your
doctor safe?
Does he/she know what he/she is doing?
How would you know?
Do you know where to find that information?
"Choosing
a doctor is arguably one of the most critical choices consumers
make," said Dr. Sidney M. Wolfe, director of Public
Citizen's Health Research Group, which conducted the research.
"We believe the public should be armed with as much
information as possible when doing so. Unfortunately, consumers
can find out more about a car they plan to purchase than a
doctor they plan to visit."
www.citizen.org may save your health and/or your life by
keeping tabs on the bad ones as best they can!
Their list
of more than 20,000 U.S. practicing
Questionable Doctors is an invaluable consumer guide
containing information about physicians who have been
disciplined by state medical boards and other agencies for
incompetence, misprescribing drugs, sexual misconduct, criminal
convictions, ethical lapses and other offenses.
Questionable Doctors analyzed the nation's system for
protecting the public from medical incompetence showing it is
far from adequate, and that medical boards are too forgiving of
doctors who have erred. Questionable Doctors contains a state
ranking to help citizens determine which states are doing the
best job of regulating the medical profession.
The
majority of doctors in Citizen.org
report were disciplined for the five most serious
offenses-sexual abuse or sexual misconduct; substandard care,
incompetence or negligence; criminal conviction; misprescribing
or overprescribing of drugs; or substance abuse-were not
required to stop practicing even temporarily. Therefore, it is
likely that they are still practicing and that their patients
are unaware of their offenses. For instance, in 2001 3,215
doctors were disciplined for substandard care, incompetence or
negligence, but only about a third had to stop practicing, even
temporarily.
Similarly,
only about two-fifths of the 2,963 doctors with criminal
convictions had to stop practicing, even temporarily, while only
about a third of 1,715 doctors disciplined for substance abuse
were required to stop practicing, even temporarily.
"In the
majority of cases, the seriousness of these offenses was not
matched by the severity of the sanctions ordered by medical
boards," Dr. Wolfe said.
Almost all
of the disciplinary actions -- 90.6 percent-taken against the
20,125 doctors were for serious offenses (including substandard
care, criminal conviction, substance abuse, sex-related
offenses, misprescribing of drugs, providing false information
to the state board, loss of hospital privileges or insurance
fraud). Despite the gravity of these offenses, only 48 percent
of the disciplinary actions were serious: revocation, suspension
or surrender of license, or probation/restriction of license.
Information came from all 50 state medical boards, the District
of Columbia, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,
the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Food and Drug
Administration. The 20,125 doctors in that initial report had a
total of 38,589 disciplinary actions taken against them.
Public
Citizen asked all the state medical boards to provide
information about court actions that may have overruled or
changed previous disciplinary actions.
Any
disciplinary actions that were overturned by courts or for which
litigation ended in the doctor's favor were deleted from the
database.
Although
some earlier editions of Questionable Doctors included
disciplinary actions against dentists, chiropractors and
podiatrists when state boards provided the information, these
doctors were eliminated from the database because information
about them from states was so inconsistent.
Public
Citizen has long sought greater consumer access to information
about doctors, and there have been recent improvements in making
that information available. Most state medical boards, for
instance, now provide some physician information on the
Internet, but the information about the disciplinary actions
varies greatly, is often inadequate and can be difficult for
people to access.
Congress
still drags their feet at doing anything to protect the consumer
from bad doctors and bad doctoring and continue to protect them
rather than spotlight them… There are no excuses for allowing
doctor's data to be viewed by HMOs and insurance companies but
not by the people who must put their lives in the hands of these
practitioners.
In spite
of the fact that at least 80,000 patients are killed and more
than 300,000 are injured as a result of negligence in hospitals,
most cases involving doctors. "A key problem is that too many
state medical boards believe their first responsibility is to
protect the doctor from the public, rather than the other way
around," Wolfe said.
Be
diligent when choosing or keeping a doctor. You do not have to
continue with a doctor who is incompetent; it is your right to
choose another, so use that right!!!

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~~^~^~^
Pesticides Raise Child Risk
of Leukemia - Study
LONDON - Exposure to pesticides in the womb or as a child can double the
risk of developing acute leukaemia, French scientists said on Tuesday.
They discovered that children born to women who used insecticides in the
home while pregnant and after the birth were nearly twice as likely as
other youngsters to develop leukaemia.
Even insecticidal shampoos to kill head lice raised the odds of the
disease.
"The results ... support the hypothesis that various types of
insecticide exposure may be a risk factor for childhood acute leukaemia,"
said Dr Florence Menegaux, of the research institute INSERM Villejuif,
France, in a report in the journal Occupational and Environmental
Medicine.
The researchers discovered the link after interviewing the mothers of
280 children who had been diagnosed with leukemia and of 288 healthy
children.
They found that youngsters exposed to fungicides and garden insecticides
had more than double the risk of the illness than other children.
Leukemia is the most common cancer in children. Symptoms include anemia,
joint pain and repeated infections. Children with the illness may also
have nose bleeds and bruising without any apparent cause.
Chemotherapy, which is very effective against the disease, is the
standard treatment.
Although no specific product was singled out in the study, the
scientists said their findings and results from other research suggest
action to prevent exposure to insecticides should be considered.
