Greetings and thank you for reading A Natural Environmental Health Facts ezine!

This is going out Tuesday night since I have to leave so very early in the morning to travel to the Prescott court house... As you read today's edition, if you are reading this on Wednesday, I will be setting in the court house waiting to be chosen to judge someone, which isn't my idea of fun... I have jury duty and I feel it is my duty to fulfill that obligation no matter how much I hate it... Think of me sitting for such a long period and I may not even be chosen as the last few times the defense didn't like me on the jury since my daughter is a sheriff. I will take a good book for reading... But know that I'm not enjoying the day while you are reading this.

Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs and Cancer
By: Shane Ellison, M.Sc.
Copyright © 2005 All Rights Reserved
www.healthmyths.net

The use of cholesterol-lowering drugs for the prevention of heart disease may increase your chances of suffering from the pandemic killer known as cancer.  Few doctors are aware of this real and present danger.

Well-designed studies have shown the link between cholesterol-lowering drug use and cancer.  In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Thomas B. Newman MD, MPH and co-workers show that all cholesterol-lowering drugs, both the early drugs known as fibrates (glofibrate, gemfibrozil) and the newer drugs known as statins (Lipitor, Pravachol, Zocor), cause cancer in rodents at the equivalent doses used by man.

The extrapolation of evidence of cancer from rodent to human is very uncertain.  This is the argument of those in favor of using cholesterol-lowering drugs.  The argument would only be plausible if human studies also showed an increase in cancer rates.  And in fact, that is what science is showing.

Evidence from the cholesterol-lowering drug trial known as CARE (Cholesterol And Recurrent Events) showed that Pravachol (a cholesterol-lowering drug made by Bristol-Myer Squib) reduced the chance of suffering from a heart attack by an absolute reduction rate of 1.1%.  This miniscule benefit was accompanied by a 1500% increase in breast cancer among women taking Pravachol.  An increase in cancer rates among Pravachol users was also shown in the drug trial known as PROSPER.

It is rare that cancer would show up in most other cholesterol-lowering drug trials.  Drug company-funded studies for these drugs are conveniently short in nature, typically 5 years or less.  It can take decades for cancer to develop.  Therefore, cancer rarely shows up.  In fact, even heavy smoking will not cause lung cancer within 5 years.   Yet it is a well-known fact that smoking leads to lung cancer.  Therefore, as long as statin drug trials last only 5 years, this side effect will continue to fly below the radar.

If cancer were to show up as a negative side effect, there is concern whether or not it would be reported.  The British Medical Journal (BMJ) has reported that of 164 statin drug trials reviewed, only 48 reported the number of participants with one or more negative side effects caused by the drug.

As if in recognition of this, attempts have been made to warn the public.  Dr. Gloria Troendle, deputy director for the Division of Metabolism and Endocrine Drug Products for the FDA, noted that the cholesterol-lowering drug gemfibrozil belonged to a class of drugs that has repeatedly been shown to increase death rates among users.  Moreover, Dr. Troendle stated that she does not believe the FDA has ever approved a drug for long-term use that was as cancer causing at human doses as gemfibrozil.  Elizabeth Barbehenn, PhD, concluded to the FDA, "fibrates must be considered as potential human carcinogens and their carcinogenic potential should be part of the risk benefit equation for evaluating gemfibrozil."

Historically, FDA advisors were reluctant to approve the cholesterol-lowering drugs.  When asked to vote whether or not the cholesterol-lowering drug gemfibrozil should be approved for the prevention of heart disease, only 3 out of 9 members of the FDA advisory committee voted in favor of approval.  Unfortunately, these votes are only "advisory" and the FDA decided to approve gemfibrozil for human consumption against the better judgment of the committee.

One mechanism by which cholesterol-lowering drugs may cause cancer has been identified.  Published in Nature Medicine, Dr. Michael Simons of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston shows that statin drugs mimic a substance known as vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF).  The biochemical VEGF promotes the growth of new blood vessels, a process known as angiogenesis.  While angiogenesis may help the growth of arteries, the benefit is quickly negated by the potential for growth of cancer.  The British Journal of Cancer reports that VEGF plays an important role in the spread of colorectal cancer.  Further, for those who already have tumors, VEGF and compounds that mimic VEGF significantly diminishes that person's survival time.

Benefits associated with cholesterol-lowering drugs do not exceed risk.  Looking at the "statin-drug trials," not a single cholesterol-lowering drug prevented all-cause death rates when compared to a placebo.  In laymen terms, this means that none of these drugs prevented early death from heart disease.

USA Today reported that, "Statins have killed and injured more people than the government has acknowledged."  Oblivious to their dangers, medical doctors are calling cholesterol-lowering drugs the "new aspirin" and are even recommending that children be prescribed cholesterol-lowering drugs.

The medical community failed to protect the public from Vioxx.  Now they are failing to protect them from the dangers of cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Health and longevity was not meant to be risky, complicated or expensive.  To attenuate the risk of using cholesterol-lowering drugs while preventing heart disease, the general public must utilize healthy lifestyle habits.  Most notably, that would be the act of quitting sugar and artificial flavors while minimizing grain products from the diet.  This will prove to be simple, effective and most affordable.

* Flushed skin
* Burning in stomach
* Headache
* Lightheadedness & or dizziness
* Dry mouth
* Dry cough
* Heat intolerance
* Dark urine with a strong odor.

For an estimate of how much water your body requires, divide your weight in half. That number, in ounces, generally is considered your recommended daily water intake. Drink a variety of fresh juices and herbal teas to help with that quota. You don't have to feel deprived. Other beverages count toward your daily requirement, too. However, avoid more than three caffeinated beverages per day... and alcohol, both of which increase fluid loss.

Begin at the Beginning with CLEAN WATER

Relying on the way your water looks, tastes or smells is a mistake. Dangerous levels of contaminants that damage your health are measured in parts per million or billion, something that the human senses of taste, smell and sight cannot detect. A case in point: In some states, the FDA recently reported the widespread tainting of milk and lettuce with rocket fuel. But the contaminated milk and lettuce regulators examined looks, tastes and smells perfectly fine. Read Water Should Be Healthy

However, there's one thing average water filter company doesn't mention. Even if their filter removes contaminants from the water you drink, you're still exposed to contaminated water when you:

*Inhale steam from a shower
*Bathe
*Wash your hands
*Wear laundry washed in contaminated water
*Eat and drink from plates, glasses and utensils washed in contaminated water

A whole house system is the best answer but if that isn't possible have a shower filter and kitchen filter for bathing, cooking and washing dishes...

Amgen Adds Warning to Anemia Drug Aranesp
Jan 15, 2005

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) - Biotechnology giant Amgen Inc. (AMGN) has added a warning to its anemia drug Aranesp after studies showed high doses of similar drugs can cause blood clots and death.

The company said in a Jan. 11 letter to health professionals that two clinical studies revealed the complications when similar drugs were used to raise hemoglobin levels above recommended levels.

Aranesp is used to treat anemia in adult cancer patients as well as chronic kidney disease. The company said it would not change its dosage recommendations. Shares of Amgen were down 8 cents at $63.81 Friday on the Nasdaq.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

Prunus armeniaca

The official name of a yellow to orange small fruit with a pit in the middle that contains a mountain of healthy nutrients - The Apricot!

Next weeks Ask Lena Health Q & A goes into the seed of the apricot and it's health properties but the fruit of the apricot is quite healthy on its own.

When I was doing my research into a question asked about Apricot Seeds and their health potential I realized I had never given you the story on the healthy Apricot aka prunus armeniaca. Since we have our own Apricot trees and I have a pantry full of canned and dried apricots as well as apricot nectar it stands to reason you should know why we eat so many of them and why you could benefit as well!

You've probably heard the term "nectar of the gods." It was nectar made of the juice and pulp of the apricot which was reputedly the drink of choice of the Greek and Roman gods.

Why eat raw first?

Something I learned a long time ago is; raw fruit when eaten at the beginning of a meal will allow your other foods to be digested better and the fruit enzymes help absorb more nutrients than you can without consuming fruit first. In some Latin countries dessert is served first and usually consists of fruit compote with one or more fresh fruits. This is the same concept that we, here in the United States, eat our salads first as raw veggies have some of the same enzymes that make it better for our digestive system.

Apricots come in so many varieties; Dried, canned, frozen or fresh that it makes for a simple solution to getting those RDV of 4.5 to 5 cups of fruit a day. They’re readily available year-round, store easily and add a boost of flavor, color and nutrients to meals or snacks. Fully ripe apricots ship poorly, so unless you live near an apricot-growing region, you may have a difficult time finding ripe ones—fruits that are soft to the touch and brimming with juice. If you find apricots that are plump, firm, and orange-gold in color, they'll be ready to eat after about two days of ripening at room temperature Don't buy hard fruits that are tinged with green—they will never develop full flavor.

Dried apricots come in a number of different forms. The most common are the bright orange apricot halves; their rich color is the result of the apricots being treated with sulfur dioxide. If you are allergic to sulfites, you can look for unsulfured apricots in health food stores. Because they're untreated, they're brown rather than orange. You may also find small, whole apricots called Turkish apricots. These are a much paler orange and are considerably sweeter than regular apricot halves.

Canned apricots are sold packed in heavy syrup, light syrup, or fruit juice. The sugary syrups add a lot of empty calories, and the fruit is so naturally sweet that it really doesn't need the extra sugar. I can our apricots with syrup made with Stevia rather than sugar.

Nearly 4000+ years ago, a fruit belonging to the rose family was discovered on the mountain slopes of China. Today, it’s generally accepted that the Chinese first cultivated this ancient fruit, the wild ancestor to the present day apricot. It is also believed that the Chinese considered the apricot to contain special fertility enhancing properties.

With the strong sensory appeal of apricots’ delicate, velvety skin and intensely sweet fragrance and flavor, apricot cuttings traveled across the Persian Empire to the Mediterranean where they flourished. In the 18th century, Spanish explorers introduced apricots to the New World. California inherited the golden blush fruit planted in the gardens of Spanish missions. In 1792, the first major production of California apricots was recorded. Many varieties of the fruit differing in size, color and flavor are still grown with popular appeal throughout the world.

The unique mix of compounds found in apricots also makes this fruit a good choice for helping to fight heart disease. Along with beta-carotene, apricots contain the other powerful anti-oxidants, Vitamin C and lycopene. Combined, these compounds help protect against cancer, heart disease and stroke.

The beta-carotene in apricots is converted to Vitamin A in the body. This nutrient helps protect the eyes and keep the skin, hair, gums and various glands healthy. It also helps build bones and teeth. Plus, research shows that Vitamin A helps to fight infection by maintaining strong immunity. For this reason, researchers are looking to apricots as a valuable source of beta-carotene’s healing power. Note: beta-carotene is often called Vitamin A on food labels.

Apricots contain the following nutrients in different amounts depending on the form eaten, with raw giving off the most. Apricots are alive with fiber, are fat free and include the minerals Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium. Along with those minerals come the vitamins A, C, B-6, B-12, E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Folate and Folic acid. All making for great health builders.

Apricots make for a great snack or dessert and my most favorite is in a pie. I'm not big on eating pie unless it's fruit and Apricot tops the list as my first choice.

Poaching: Place apricotspeeled or unpeeled, whole or halvedin barely simmering fruit juice, cover, and cook until tender. Add whole cloves or a cinnamon stick to the liquid for extra flavor. Once the apricots are poached, the liquid can be cooked down to produce a sauce. Cooking time: 5 to 7 minutes.

Reconstituting dried apricots: Serve dried apricots for breakfast or dessert, at any time of year. Simmer them in a small amount of water, white wine, or fruit juice until tender. Cooking time: 15 minutes.

Here is my recipe for apricot pie.

Heat oven to 350 Degrees F.

You will need a 2 crust pie crust of your choice. ( I make it with a whole wheat or soyflour pie crust.)

Filling ingredients:

1 tablespoon Whole wheat flour or Corn Starch
2 tablespoons butter, cut into small bits.
3 cups apricots, washed, pitted, sliced (some may prefer to remove the peel but we like the peel included and makes for more fiber and doesn't alter the taste.)
2/3 cup brown sugar or 1.5 tbsp. whole stevia leaf powder or 1/4 tsp.
white stevia extract (powder)

Mix together flour and sugar, then add apricots and mix until apricots are well coated with mixture. Place apricot mixture evenly in the pie crust. Put butter bits all over the top of mixture. Wet edges of the bottom crust, cover with upper crust and press the edges together. Place pie pan/plate on cookie sheet and bake about 45 - 50 minutes taking care to not over brown crust. Pie will be flavorful and not too sweet.

Enjoy your healthy apricots!
Lena

Monsanto Suing Farmers Over Piracy Issues

Jan 13, 2005
By PAUL ELIAS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Monsanto Co. (MON)'s "seed police" snared soy farmer Homan McFarling in 1999, and the company is demanding he pay it hundreds of thousands of dollars for alleged technology piracy. McFarling's sin? He saved seed from one harvest and replanted it the following season, a revered and ancient agricultural practice.

"My daddy saved seed. I saved seed," said McFarling, 62, who still grows soy on the 5,000 acre family farm in Shannon, Miss. and is fighting the agribusiness giant in court.

Saving Monsanto's seeds, genetically engineered to kill bugs and resist weed sprays, violates provisions of the company's contracts with farmers.

Since 1997, Monsanto has filed similar lawsuits 90 times in 25 states against 147 farmers and 39 agriculture companies, according to a report issued Thursday by The Center for Food Safety, a biotechnology foe.

In a similar case a year ago, Tennessee farmer Kem Ralph was sued by Monsanto and sentenced to eight months in prison after he was caught lying about a truckload of cotton seed he hid for a friend.

Ralph's prison term is believed to be the first criminal prosecution linked to Monsanto's crackdown. Ralph has also been ordered to pay Monsanto more than $1.7 million.

The company itself says it annually investigates about 500 "tips" that farmers are illegally using its seeds and settles many of those cases before a lawsuit is filed.

In this way, Monsanto is attempting to protect its business from pirates in much the same way the entertainment industry does when it sues underground digital distributors exploiting music, movies and video games.

In the process, it has turned farmer on farmer and sent private investigators into small towns to ask prying questions of friends and business acquaintances.

Monsanto's licensing contracts and litigation tactics are coming under increased scrutiny as more of the planet's farmland comes under genetically engineered cultivation.

Some 200 million acres of the world's farms grew biotech crops last year, an increase of 20 percent from 2003, according to a separate report released Wednesday.

Many of the farmers Monsanto has sued say, as McFarling claims, that they didn't read the company's technology agreement close enough. Others say they never received an agreement in the first place.

The company counters that it sues only the most egregious violations and is protecting the 300,000 law-abiding U.S. farmers who annually pay a premium for its technology. Soy farmers, for instance, pay a "technology fee" of about $6.50 an acre each year.

Some 85 percent of the nation's soy crop is genetically engineered to resist Monsanto's herbicide Roundup, a trait many farmers say makes it easier to weed their fields and ultimately cheaper to grow their crops.

"It's a very efficient and cost-effective way to raise soy beans and that's why the market has embraced it," said Ron Heck, who grows 900 acres of genetically engineered soy beans in Perry, Iowa.

Heck, who is also chairman of the American Soybean Association, said he doesn't mind buying new seed each year and appreciates Monsanto's crackdown on competitors who don't pay for their seed.

"You can save seed if you want to use the old technology," Heck said.

The company said the licensing agreement protects its more than 600 biotech-related patents and ensures a return on its research and development expenses, which amount to more than $400 million annually.

"We have to balance our obligations and our responsibilities to our customers, to our employees and to our shareholders," said Scott Baucum, Monsanto's chief intellectual property protector.

Still, Monsanto's investigative tactics are sewing seeds of fear and mistrust in some farming communities, company critics say.

Monsanto encourages farmers to call a company hot line with piracy tips, and private investigators in its employ act on leads with visits to the associates of suspect farmers.

Baucum acknowledged that the company walks a fine line when it sues farmers.

"It is very uncomfortable for us," Baucum said. "They are our customers and they are important to us."

The Center for Food Safety established its own hot line Thursday where farmers getting sued can receive aid. It also said it hopes to convene a meeting among defense lawyers to develop legal strategies to fight Monsanto.

The company said it has gone to trial five times and has never lost a legal fight against an accused pirate. The U.S. Supreme Court in 1980 allowed for the patenting of genetically engineered life forms and extended the same protections to altered plants in 2001. Earlier this year, a Washington D.C. federal appeals court specifically upheld Monsanto's license.

"It's sad. It's sickening. I'm disillusioned," said Rodney Nelson, a North Dakota farmer who settled a Monsanto suit in 2001 that he said was unfairly filed. "We have a heck of an uphill battle that I don't think can be won."

LENA'S COMMENT: Yes, this could be won if we ALL boycott Monsanto products and let them know we are doing it because of their dogmatic tactics on the farmers... GM products are going to prove to be unhealthy as time goes on and it will be for our benefit not to use the GM produce!!! Saving seeds is a practice as old as this earth and farming and just because they now have these GM hybrids doesn't make it any less a practice, or at least it shouldn't...

Activists Call Sound Wave Research Harmful
Jan 14, 2005
By LISA J. ADAMS

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Scientists working off the Yucatan Peninsula are preparing to use sound waves to search for information about an asteroid that may have wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

But environmental activists are trying to shut the project down, saying the technology could harm whales, sea turtles and several varieties of fish that provide a livelihood for thousands of Mexicans along the gulf coast.

Marine seismologists from the University of Texas Institute of Geophysics, the Geophysics Institute at Mexico's Autonomous National University and Cambridge and London universities will use underwater seismic pulses to learn more about the Chicxulub (pronounced Sheek-shoo-LOOB) Crater, a depression measuring about 120 miles in diameter and centered just outside the port of Progreso, 190 miles west of Cancun.

The same technique is routinely used by scientific research vessels around the world to study earthquake faults, tsunami dangers and climate change, scientists say. It is used in Mexico by the state oil monopoly, Pemex, to search for new energy reserves.

But Rosario Sosa, president of the Yucatan-based civilian Association for the Rights of Animals and their Habitat, said the sound waves "damage the brain, or damage the cochlea of the ear, and disorient the animals so that they beach themselves or crash into boats."

"They are no longer capable of looking for food using their sonar," she said.

Scientists acknowledge there's evidence that points to Navy sonar causing whales to beach themselves. But they say there's no proof that seismic pulses have harmed marine animals, though much more research is needed to draw firm conclusions.

Thus far "there has not been any significant evidence that there is any harm being done to the marine animal population," said Maya Tolstoy, a research scientist with Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

The observatory is in charge of operating the Maurice Ewing, the research vessel from which the scientists will work, about 50 miles offshore. The boat is owned by the U.S. National Science Foundation.

Located half-onshore and half-offshore, the Chicxulub Crater is believed to have been carved by a comet or asteroid 65 million years ago, and occurred simultaneously with the mass extinction of species, including the dinosaur.

It is the largest and best-preserved "impact" crater on Earth, said Gail Christeson, a University of Texas marine seismologist involved in the project.

Researchers will send sound waves into the seabed via compressed-air guns to try to create the three-dimensional structure of the crater and learn the speed of the asteroid or comet, the angle at which it hit the Earth, and its effects on the environment.

The information could lead to knowledge of how to respond to possible future asteroid hits, Christeson said. She said the research also will help scientists to better understand the aquifer system of the Yucatan because the crater controls the water supply.

But Sosa says that after the Maurice Ewing conducted research in the waters between the Baja California peninsula and mainland Mexico in October 2002, two beached whales were found in the area with evidence of damage to their ears.

She also says activists have come across dead dolphins and turtles in the gulf coast state of Campeche, where Pemex uses seismic pulses to explore for oil. An additional concern is that the sound waves could threaten fish stocks - the livelihood of about 30,000 families along the Gulf coast.

Christeson says she has participated in at least four seismic cruises, "and we have never seen any effect on marine life."

"It has been observed that the Navy sonar may have contributed to strandings of marine mammals," said Christeson. "Our sounds source is different from navy sonar. The amplitude is less and we also fire intermittently, so we will put a short burst of sound in water every 20 seconds. The Navy sweeps through different frequencies."

Mexico's national Environment Department granted the Maurice Ewing permission to operate after the scientists agreed to take along independent specialists to monitor sea animals; allow flight and underwater acoustic monitoring; work only during the day when it is easier to notice the animals; and maintain a 3,800-yard safety radius around the ship. The government will conduct its own monitoring flights as well, officials said.

The scientists also have agreed to stop testing when the presence of marine mammals is detected, and will gradually raise the sound wave decibels to warn the animals and give them a chance to leave the area.

The activists, who claim to represent 100 national and international organizations, say that's not good enough.

Benjamin White of the Washington-based non-governmental Animal Welfare Institute initially planned to tie himself with a rope to a fishermen's boat that would ride alongside the Maurice Ewing to prevent it from conducting the tests.
