Something To Think About
============================
To C or Not To C?
The increase in elective
C-sections comes amid a rise in C-sections overall. In 2004, close to
30% of all births were cesarean, up from about 20% in 1996.
Critics of elective C-sections see a downside. Such research is early
and conflicting, they say, and science doesn't yet understand the
time-honored trip down the birth canal. Babies delivered by cesarean
section have more respiratory infections later in life, and may have
more gastrointestinal tract problems as well.
In the United States, the overall infant mortality rate is 6.9 per 1,000
babies; the maternal mortality rate is 11.8 per 100,000 live births, and
estimates are that a C-section more than doubles the mother's risk of
death. When an infant dies in childbirth, it can take a court of law to
figure out if a different birth process would have made a difference.
Pain during C-section recovery lasts longer, and the procedure can put
the mother at increased risk of hemorrhage, infection and bowel
obstruction. Scarring of the uterus can create problems in future
pregnancy implantation. The baby can be at greater risk of accidental
surgical cuts and breast-feeding problems, possibly because liquid in
the lungs hasn't been as thoroughly expelled.
With more doctors willing to do elective C-sections, and with increasing
numbers of young women seeing it as a personal choice, the cesarean rate
will no doubt continue to rise.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

A recent study
showed that men who add foods rich in the bioflavonoid apigenin to their
diet may protect themselves against prostate cancer. Apigenin is found
in cherries, apples, grapes, onions, broccoli, celery, and leeks, among
other foods-including tomatoes, making them a double-whammy when it
comes to cancer prevention. It can also be found in the herbs chamomile,
lemon balm, perilla, and parsley.

Study: Not Every Hernia
Needs to Be Fixed
Jan 17, 2006
By CARLA K. JOHNSON
CHICAGO (AP) - Men with hernias but little or no pain can safely go
without surgery unless things really start to hurt, a study found. "Not
every hernia needs to be fixed," said Dr. Olga Jonasson of the
University of Illinois at Chicago, co-author of the study in Wednesday's
Journal of the American Medical Association.
U.S. surgeons fix more than 600,000 hernias a year, making it one of the
most common procedures. The study offers guidance to doctors on whether
it is OK to leave a pain-free hernia untreated.
In an accompanying editorial, Dr. David Flum of the University of
Washington's surgery department said hernia surgery for patients without
pain may soon disappear, just as preventive tonsillectomies have done.
"We've really moved far away from preventive surgery, and this is
another example of that," said Flum, who was not involved in the study.
Groin hernias look like a lump under the skin and are caused when part
of the intestine bulges through a weak part of the muscle wall of the
abdomen. Men get them more often than women. Muscle strain from heavy
lifting, obesity and persistent coughing can lead to hernias.
They can cause painful bowel obstructions and sometimes can cut off
blood to part of the bowel, requiring emergency surgery. Doctors repair
them by opening the abdomen, pushing the intestine back where it belongs
and sometimes reinforcing the opening with mesh before stitching the
muscle wall and skin closed.
Researchers followed 720 men, most of them middle-aged, with groin
hernias for about four years. Half were randomly assigned to get their
hernias fixed. The other half were told to do nothing except see their
doctors periodically and if the hernias got bad.
After two years, the groups had similar levels of pain. Only two men in
the "watchful waiting" group developed severe problems with their
hernias after four years.
About 30 percent of the men in the "watchful waiting" group decided to
have surgery during the four years because they developed symptoms. And
about 17 percent of the men assigned to surgery did not go through with
it, possibly for other health reasons.
About 20 percent of the men who had surgery had surgical complications,
including three men whose complications were life-threatening.
"The operation itself is not necessarily a free ride," Jonasson said.

FOOD OF THE
WEEK

Tangy
vegetable, fruit or what?
This tangy flavorful herb/food/flavoring isn't really a fruit or
vegetable but a root, which could qualify as a vegetable!
It's a perennial herb Zingiber Officionale or commonly English name
Gingerroot. In the fresh Gingerroot state, it has a characteristic
staghorn-like appearance; dried ginger is usually sold in form of
off-white to very light brown powder or fresh whole or pieces. Ginger
root is a rhizome or underground stem and not considered an actual root.
Depending on the location it is being grown at, it is harvested nearly
year-round. It is ready for harvest about five months after planting.
The early harvests are used for ginger syrup and candied ginger. The
later harvests are usually sold as fresh ginger. It becomes hotter and
spicier, and better for homeopathic remedies, the longer it is in the
ground.
Ginger leaves are occasionally used for flavoring in ginger producing
countries.
Ginger and turmeric combine with citrus and maple syrup to make the
perfect blend of healing nutrients.
The English botanist William Roscoe (1753-1831) gave the plant the name
of
Zingiber officinale in an 1807 publication. The ginger family is a
tropical group especially abundant in Indo-Malaysia, consisting of more
than 1200 plant species. The genus Zingiber includes about 85 species of
aromatic herbs from East Asia and tropical Australia. The name of the
genus, Zingiber, derives from a Sanskrit word denoting "horn-shaped," in
reference to the protrusions on the rhizome. Major world producers
include Fiji, India, Jamaica, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and China. American
imports come from China, several Caribbean Islands, Africa, Central
America, Brazil, and Australia. Ginger is now commercially cultivated in
nearly every tropical and subtropical country in the world with arable
land for export crops. While in Hawaii last April I was privy to see
ginger growing in all it's beauty and several organic plots for personal
use as well as for sale... Fresh ginger and dried ginger are considered
two different commodities. In fact, one author of an early Chinese
herbal felt that they were so different that they must come from two
different plants! The dried root is known as Gan-jiang. The fresh root
is called Sheng-jiang.
Ginger having been around so long that its exact origin is unclear.
It reached the West at least two thousand years ago, recorded as a
subject of a Roman tax in the second century after being imported via
the Red Sea to Alexandria. Tariff duties appear in the records of
Marseilles in 1228 and in Paris by 1296. Ginger is known in England
before the Norman Conquest, as it is commonly found in the 11th century
Anglo-Saxon leech books. Ginger is detailed in a 13th century work,
"Physicians of Myddvai," a collection of recipes and prescriptions
written by a physician, Rhiwallon, and his three sons, by mandate of
Rhys Gryg, prince of South Wales (who died in 1233). By the 13th and
14th centuries it was familiar to English palates, and next to pepper,
was the most popular spice. A pound of ginger was then valued at the
price of one sheep. Ginger, as a product of the Far East, was indelibly
imprinted on the taste buds of Westerners before potatoes, tomatoes, and
corn were even known to exist by Europeans.
Medicinal properties
Ginger has been used for centuries in treating the common cold.
Additionally, it is an effective analgesic, anti-pyretic, anti-viral
agent. Asian cultures believe it prevents them from maladies found in
most countries such as hypertension, and in the prevention of
atherosclerosis. Other known benefits of ginger include its ability to
cleanse the colon, reduce spasms and cramps, stimulate circulation, and
aid metabolism. Many have used it to treat colitis, nausea, gas,
indigestion, bowel disorders, morning sickness, motion sickness,
vomiting, congestion, fever, and headaches. In spite of Westernized
medicine moving in on them Asian medicine still, for the most part, uses
it as a treatment for asthma, shortness of breath, water retention,
earache, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Homeopathic practitioners even
recommend it for sexual disorders. In some cultures over the centuries
it has been credited with the ability to treat arthritis, fevers, and
toothaches. It is said to have the ability to prevent internal blood
clots. An added benefit to Ginger is that it is a strong antioxidant and
effective microbial agent for sores and wounds.
Ginger in protecting and soothing the digestive system increases the pH
of stomach acid, reducing its acidity, thereby naturally lowers the rate
of gastric secretions, and increasing digestive enzyme activity. Rather
than blocking the feelings of nausea in the brain, it acts directly on
the stomach and liver to reduce nausea and vomiting. Ginger tincture -
root is soaked in alcohol and water - sometimes labeled as "drops" or
"extracts" - are available in health and natural food stores.
Recommended ten to twenty drops of ginger tincture in a little water
with meals to counteract indigestion or help fight early symptoms of
cold or flu.
Ginger root herb has no known harmful side effects, and is viewed as a
very safe herb. However, it has been known to cause heartburn in some
people. If such occurs, reduce dosage and try again or discontinue use.
In most American Asian restaurants shredded fresh ginger is offered as a
condiment to dishes and is found to be a common flavoring in most of
their dishes. Since I have not been to the orient I cannot absolutely
say how it is served over there.
Many people like raw ginger. Sometimes people will soak ginger in water
for several hours then added to the dish immediately before serving.
This gives it a more fresh, spicy and pungent taste. The freshness
decreases and the pungency increases when fresh ginger is cooked. Often
times, ginger is ground up into a powder and used in curries and spice
pastes.
Slices of ginger are used quite often to flavor foods that need to
simmer for long periods of time. The reason ginger is good for this is
because the slices release their flavor quite slowly.
Ginger tea can be made by cooking slices of fresh ginger in water for a
few minutes. It is a spicy and healthy drink that can be enjoyed in hot
tropical climates or in freezing cold climates. Below is a great tasting
and healthy detoxing, pain relieving and refreshing tea!
Ginger Healing Detox Tea with Turmeric
INGREDIENTS
2 cups water
1/8 teaspoon shredded ginger
1/2 teaspoon powdered turmeric
1 tablespoon maple syrup
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1. Bring water to a boil, then add herbs (1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger
may be used in place of shredded fresh). Simmer for 10 - 20 minutes.
2. Strain tea into a mug, add maple syrup and lemon, stirring to
combine. Drink warm.
Makes 1 serving.
Enjoy this pleasant food/herb/medicinal in all kinds of cookies, cakes,
tea, drinks or as a condiment with fish or fruits. I add a small piece
of fresh root to my juicer when I juice apples and carrots together for
a very pleasant flavor enhancer and nutrient enrichment.

Urine Detects
Recurring Cancer
(Ivanhoe Newswire)
-- A new urine test used in combination with a diagnostic scope
detects 99 percent of recurring bladder cancers, according to a
recent study.
Researchers from the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer
Center in Houston led the study in conjunction with 23 other
clinical sites. Bladder cancer recurrence ranges from 50 percent
to 90 percent and current tests are not entirely dependable.
Cystoscopy is a visual examination of the bladder that often
fails to detect cancer. Cytologic evaluation is the analysis of
cells under a microscope, and results are easily misinterpreted.
The new BladderCheck test screens urine for nuclear matrix
proteins -- an indicator cancer is present. Used in combination
with cystoscopy, the BladderCheck test is 99-percent accurate
and gives doctors results in less than one hour.
Barry Stein, M.D., professor of urology at Brown Medical School
in Providence, R.I., says, "This is good news for patients. If
you have been treated for bladder cancer and are being monitored
for recurrence, the accuracy of your diagnosis is extremely
important. We depend on the urine test to show us whether there
is a possibility of cancer that we are not seeing with the
scope. If we say there's no recurrence of cancer, we want to be
right."
Cystoscopies are often uncomfortable for patients. Dr. Stein
believes the BladderCheck test may one day replace cystoscopies.
He says: "We need to do further research. But if a test is
developed that is effective as a stand-alone, that would be a
real benefit."

Deadly Disease Is Suspected
in Decline of Yellowstone Wolves
By JIM ROBBINS
January 15, 2006
HELENA, Mont., Jan. 14 -An annual census of wolves at Yellowstone
National Park has found a precipitous drop in the population. But park
biologists, who suspect a deadly disease, canine parvovirus, say they
will let nature take its course.
"Parvo can be vaccinated for and can be treated, but we wouldn't do it
because we couldn't catch every animal," Daniel Stahler, a park wolf
biologist, said. "And this allows them to build up a natural
resistance."
The census found 22 pups, compared with 69 last year. The total count of
wolves dropped to 118 from 171, the lowest since 2000.
Wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone 11 years ago.
"It was somewhat devastating to have such poor pup survival," Mr.
Stahler said. "But research shows that young pups can bounce back from
it quite successfully."
Scientists will take blood samples from surviving pups in the next
several weeks to test for the presence of antibodies to confirm exposure
to canine parvovirus, which causes death by severe diarrhea and
dehydration.
That pups have suffered the brunt of the decline seems to suggest the
culprit is parvo, said Ed Bangs, wolf recovery coordinator for the
United States Fish and Wildlife Service here. Nursing pups receive
immunity from their mother's milk, but the immunity drops when nursing
stops.
The large number of wolves in the park might also be a factor.
"When you have a big litter and adults are having trouble killing enough
to feed all these pups, and the animals are stressed, parvo flares up,"
Mr. Bangs said. "If you have 15 brothers and sisters instead of 3, you
don't get enough to eat; parvo kills you."
Canine parvovirus was discovered in the United States in 1978. Extremely
hardy, the disease spread rapidly to domestic dogs and then into wild
animal populations.
"Parvo is everywhere," Mr. Bangs said.
Biologists suspect that it was introduced to Yellowstone by a tourist's
infected dog or a coyote. Because parvo is so hardy, it persists in the
soil for months. A wolf could catch it from simply sniffing contaminated
soil, the biologists said.
The disease has hit wolves on the northern range, the elk-filled meadows
of the northern half of the park, especially hard. Out of 49 pups born
there, 8 survived.
Some scientists, including Mr. Bangs, theorize that the park may have
overshot its capacity for wolves and that the numbers are naturally
adjusting downward, with disease being one of the agents. The long-term
carrying capacity of the park, he said, is probably 110 to 150 wolves.
Last year, 16 packs roamed in and around Yellowstone. Now there are 13.
Wolves have been killed in other ways, too. Frequent encounters among
competing wolf packs are the biggest cause of death among adults. In the
first five years of their reintroduction to the park, one or two animals
a year were killed by other wolves. That number has risen to four or
five a year.
Vehicles also take a toll. Fourteen wolves have been killed by vehicles
in the last 10 years, eight of them near Mile Marker 30 on Route 191, a
straight stretch on the western side of the park where motorists tend to
speed and wolves are plentiful.
LENA'S COMMENT: If you plan on
visiting Yellowstone in the next few years leave your pet at home or
risk it contacting the parvovirus... This will be something we will hear
about for many years to come as the wolf population declines because of
it... As the virus stays in the ground for many years, so this risks any
new wolves in the future. A fact we discovered in one apartment we lived
in at the beginning of our marriage 47 years ago where we lost two dogs
from the parvovirus while living there, and learned that several tenants
before us had lost pets to the same virus leaving it behind for the rest
of us... My sons had no pet after that as long as we lived in those
apartments on the base...
