Greetings and thank you for reading A Natural Environmental

As the weekend winds its way out of here and on
to another week I find myself thinking about spring and seed
germinating, way before it's time. Our weather has been warm for the
last week and that makes me and the earth think it is spring. Green is
springing heads through the ground and if my guess is right we
will have trees blossoming soon, which isn't good. That will mean no
fruit on them this next year... I see where other parts of the country
is suffering normal to abnormal cold weather, so mother nature is being
very fickled again... Enjoy what's left of the weekend and if you

Something To Think About

Bush's malpractice reform may trump local efforts
By Mark Hollmer
Boston Business Journal
Jan. 16, 2005
After years of failed attempts to pass broad medical malpractice
liability reform in Massachusetts, supporters and opponents alike
believe their local battle could be rendered moot with the increasing
likelihood that a far-reaching federal measure will pass instead.
The first steps toward that outcome began last week, when President Bush
called on Congress to pass a law imposing limits on medical-malpractice
lawsuits to help combat skyrocketing insurance rates he said are driving
physicians out of business.
The Bay State's leading physicians' organization, which is clamoring for
reform, and local trial attorneys, who oppose it, believe Bush and the
expanded Republican majority in Congress have a serious chance at
succeeding this year.
.............The jury is out about how effective existing laws have been
in other states. Texas malpractice legislation, for example, passed in
2003, and the Texas Medical Association says the law encouraged the
state's largest medical-liability insurer -- Texas Medical Liability
Trust -- to slash liability rates by 17 percent. But the Foundation For
Taxpayer and Consumer Rights says damage awards caps haven't prevented
other insurers there from raising malpractice rates by nearly 20
percent.

CPR Often Performed Inadequately
Jan 18, 2005
By LINDSEY TANNER
CHICAGO (AP) - CPR is often performed inadequately by doctors,
paramedics and nurses, according to two studies of resuscitation efforts
during cardiac arrest.
Whether a stricken patient is in the hospital or on the way, the
guidelines for administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation frequently
are not followed.
Among the problems commonly cited: Rescuers did not push hard enough or
frequently enough on the victim's chest to restart the heart, and
breathed air into the lungs too often - either mouth-to-mouth or through
breathing tubes.
Both studies used an experimental monitor that assesses CPR quality, and
both received funding from Laerdal Medical Corp., a Norwegian company
that developed the device with Philips Medical Systems.
The studies appear in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical
Association.
The researchers explained that skills learned in the classroom can fall
by the wayside in the stress-filled chaos of a real-life emergency.
Also, they noted that chest compressions strong enough to break ribs are
sometimes required, and rescuers can tire quickly.
In one of the studies, involving 67 adult patients at the University of
Chicago, doctors and nurses failed to follow at least one CPR guideline
80 percent of the time. Failure to follow several guidelines was common.
"Patients who had it perfectly done were in the distinct minority," said
Dr. Benjamin Abella, one of the researchers.
The other study involved 176 adults with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest
treated by paramedics and nurse anesthetists in Stockholm, Sweden;
Akershus, Norway; and London. Chest compressions were done only half the
time, and most were too shallow.
More than 600,000 people die from sudden cardiac arrest each year in
North America and Europe. The heart suddenly stops beating, either
because of a heart attack or other underlying heart disease.
The combination heart monitor and defibrillator used in the studies
includes a small sensor that attaches to the patient's chest and
evaluates depth of chest compressions and other aspects of CPR. The
monitor includes an automated voice that provides on-the-spot coaching,
telling rescuers when chest compressions are not strong enough or
frequent enough. But that feature was not used during the studies.
Both studies were too small to determine whether using the device saved
lives, but the Chicago researchers said it could improve patients'
survival chances.
"Without a device that gives you feedback in the heat of the moment, you
can't drive an airplane that way - and we can't take care of sick
critical patients without the appropriate monitors," said the study's
leader, Dr. Lance Becker, director of the university's emergency
resuscitation research center.
The device is approved for experimental use in the United States, and
the manufacturer is seeking Food and Drug Administration permission to
sell it commercially in this country.
While other studies have found CPR techniques lacking, the JAMA studies
are the first using a monitor to evaluate "what's going on during real
cardiac arrests and in real people," said American Heart Association
spokesman Vinay Nadkarni. "It's outstanding information."
The studies will be taken up at a medical conference next week in Dallas
that could lead to an update of the CPR guidelines, Nadkarni said.
The studies add to evidence that the guidelines need to be simplified so
that they "can be readily used in the real world," Drs. Gordon Ewy and
Arthur Sanders, emergency medicine specialists at the University of
Arizona, said in an accompanying editorial.

FOOD OF THE
WEEK

Healthy Fortunella crassifolia!
I'm missing those nice little orange, yellowish
green fruits that use to grow in our back yard in Southern California.
It was easy to walk out and pull a few off the tree and eat them as a
snack during the day or put in a bag to take to work for a morning or
afternoon snack. We had two different types; the normal kumquat – small
yellowish orange colored - and Limequates – greenish yellow color, both
the shape and size of bird eggs - growing in our back yard that were
absolutely refreshing and different and were ready for picking
throughout the winter months. I loved slicing them into fruit salads as
well as fresh off the trees as a snack. Tangy insides with a sweet peel,
so different from other citrus that require peeling before eating.
Kumquats, also called Cumquat, kinkan
or Fortunella crassifolia or as Chinese call them
Gold Oranges, are the fruits that are
produced from small family of evergreen trees, similar to an orange
tree, that grows to a height of 10 - 15 feet. Our kumquat and limequat
trees were miniature and only about 5 feet tall but never failed to be
loaded with fruit… Kumquats are truly the tiny jewels of the citrus
kingdom. The bite-size fruit, which are eaten skin and all is a
wonderful combination of tangy and sweet flavors unique to themselves.
The seeds, similar to the seed of the orange with a distinctive green
color, should not be eaten, but contain pectin, which can be removed by
boiling for use in making jams and jellies.
Kumquat is a small little fruit that is said to be
native to China and Indochina, where the trees can grow up to 10ft, and
are much appreciated for their beauty and fruits. Dwarf kumquat trees
are specially cultivated in pots for the Chinese New Year celebrations,
when its fruits are used as edible decorations. In the U.S. they are
mostly cultivated in California, Florida and the Gulf Coast. Slightly
bigger than a Brazil nut, they have a thick sweet peel and a tart pulp.
Excellent in marmalades, jellies, crystallized, minced or whole. They
make an interesting addition to salads or in sweet and sour dishes.
Has the minerals that most citrus contain such as;
Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper,
Manganese, Selenium along with the Vitamins C, B-6, B-12, A, E, folic
acid, niacin, Thiamin and riboflavin. Making it very citrus but also a
calming soothing food. So when you are out of sorts have a few kumquats!
Winter fruits that can brighten up a dreary winter
day. Compact and bite-sized, you can eat kumquats as you would a grape.
Just wash them and pop in your mouth. They're also nice in salads or as
a garnish in drinks. They have a tangy citrus flavor and can be used in
any dish that calls for oranges or grapefruit. Kumquats are high in
fiber and vitamin C. There are variations of kumquats such as
orangequats, lemonquats, and limequats. So no recipes as we like them
raw…
If you live in an area where you are privy to
having access to the kumquat family take advantage of these healthy
little citrus fruits.

How's Your Direction Finder?
There's not a lot understood about
why some people have a great sense of direction and others
don't.
But a group of researchers published a report in the British
Medical Journal that might offer a clue. They suggested that
a sense of direction might be associated with the pineal gland,
the gland that produces melatonin.
The researchers studied 760 patients, of whom 394 showed calcium
deposits in their pineal glands. They rated the subjects' sense
of direction on a scale of 1 to 10.
The subjects who didn't have calcium deposits had an average
score of 7.6, while people with calcium deposits couldn't score
better than an average of 3.7.
To prove their point, the researchers tried the same study with
homing pigeons. Pigeons with normal glands found their way home
with no trouble. Those with calcium in their pineal glands got
lost.

Nations Debate Climate/disaster Link
Jan 19, 2005
By CHARLES J. HANLEY
KOBE, Japan (AP) - The U.S. delegation to a global conference on
disasters wants to purge a U.N. action plan of its references to climate
change as a potential cause of future natural calamities.
The U.S. stand reflects the opposition of U.S. President George W.
Bush's administration to treating global warming as a priority problem.
"It's well known that there's controversy" about climate change, Mark
Lagon, deputy delegation head, told reporters Wednesday at the World
Conference on Disaster Reduction. "It's our desire that this controversy
not distract this conference."
The chief U.N. official here had a different view.
"I hope there will be a global recognition of climate change causing
more natural disasters," said Jan Egeland, U.N. undersecretary-general
for humanitarian affairs.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a U.N.-organized network
of scientists, said in its latest major assessment of climate science
that the planet is warming and that this is expected to cause more
extreme weather events, such as hurricanes and droughts, as the century
wears on.
A broad scientific consensus attributes much of the warming to the
accumulation of "greenhouse gases" in the atmosphere, such as carbon
dioxide from fossil fuel-burning. The Kyoto Protocol, which takes effect
Feb. 16, mandates cutbacks in such emissions, but the United States, the
biggest emitter, has rejected that international pact.
In its preamble, the "framework for action" drafted for adoption at the
Kobe conference this Saturday says climate change is one factor pointing
toward "a future where disasters could increasingly threaten the world's
economy, and its population." Other passages call for strengthening
research into global warming and for clear identification of
"climate-related disaster risks."
The U.S. delegation, supported by Australia and Canada, has called for
all references to climate change to be deleted from the main document.
The move is opposed by the 25-nation European Union - a strong supporter
of the Kyoto Protocol - and by poorer nations potentially imperiled by
the intensified storms, rising ocean waters and other effects of climate
change.
"We feel there will be more calamities unless there is some action on
climate change. The number of natural hazards will increase," said
Siddiqur Choudhury, a delegate from Bangladesh, where a half-million or
more people were killed by cyclones in 1970 and 1991.
With global warming, millions more Bangladeshis could be displaced from
low-lying coastal regions when oceans expand and rise as they receive
runoff from melting ice.
Egeland, the U.N. emergency coordinator overseeing the relief effort for
the Indian Ocean earthquake-tsunami, which killed more than 160,000
people last month, said the world has seen "a dramatic increase in
hurricanes, storm surges and climate-caused natural disasters."
In an Associated Press interview, he noted that he hasn't been involved
in the floor debate over document language. But, he said, "there is
climate change. That is not really controversial. What is controversial
is what causes climate change" - a reference to dissenters who contend
the role of greenhouse gases may be overstated.
John Horekens, the U.N. conference coordinator, said he saw room for
compromise on the language: Inclusion of a brief reference to climate
change in the action plan, and additional references in a less
significant annex.
LENA'S COMMENT: My apologies to the rest of the world for our
leaders stupidity. It has been known for decades that global
temperatures hold our weather in it's hand and for someone to say that
warming isn't pertinent... Well, that's the height of stupidity or
saying what is politically correct for the moment not what they know to
be true!!!
