Death Reported From Novel Antibiotic

WASHINGTON (AP) - Researchers reported Friday three cases of severe liver problems, including one death, in patients at a North Carolina hospital after they began taking a novel antibiotic.

Federal regulators said they were reviewing an unknown number of U.S. cases involving the drug, telithromycin, and were consulting with their counterparts overseas.

One patient at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., died after taking telithromycin, which is marketed as Ketek, researchers at the hospital said. Another required and received a liver transplant, while the third recovered from drug-induced hepatitis after treatment with Ketek was stopped.

The severity of the cases warranted the researchers' alerting doctors to what they called a "possible link with telithromycin," said Dr. John Hanson, who works in the liver transplant center at Carolinas Medical Center.

The reports do not prove the drug caused the problems, researchers said. Nor is there enough information to support major changes in how the drug is prescribed, Hanson said. Two of the three patients reported some use of alcohol, although there was no prior evidence of liver damage.

The cases are discussed in a paper to be published March 21 in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine. The journal released an electronic version on Friday.

The drug is made by Sanofi-Aventis. A company spokeswoman did not immediately return a message seeking comment left midday Friday.

The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug, marketed as Ketek, in 2004 for treatment of acute bacterial infections from chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial sinusitis and community-acquired pneumonia. On Friday, FDA spokeswoman Susan Bro said the agency would comb through its databases for other reports of liver problems in patients treated with the drug.

"Because these liver problems are significant and somewhat idiosyncratic or unpredictable, the FDA is evaluating the use of this medicine in both the U.S. and abroad where it is used and marketed to determine whether additional warning guidance is merited," Bro said.

Bro cautioned that patients on the drug who experience any sort of liver distress, including jaundice, should talk to their doctors immediately.

This green vegetable that looks like a bush, should be on everyone's plate on a regular basis, if they wish to stay healthy! Broccoli has been around for more than 2000 years. During the 16th century, the plant was grown in Italy and France. It began to be commercially grown in the United States in the 1920s. The word "broccoli" derives from the Italian 'Brocco' meaning arm branch. Broccoli is related to cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. The most common type of broccoli sold in the U.S. is called sprouting, or Italian green, broccoli; its light-green stalks are topped by umbrella-shaped clusters of purplish-green florets. It is also known as Calabrese, after the Italian province of Calabria, where it was first grown. Other broccoli types are:

Broccolini: a cross between broccoli and Chinese kale.
Broccoflower: a cross between broccoli and cauliflower, comes in a single large head, like cauliflower, but is green rather than white.
Broccoli sprouts: a particularly concentrated source of sulforaphane. They're expensive, but a little goes a long way.

Broccoli is an antioxidant rich food filled with the minerals Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium. Rich in vitamins such as; Vitamin C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Vitamin B-6, Folate, Folic acid, Vitamin B-12, Vitamin A, Retinol and Vitamin E. broccoli really delivers in the nutrition department.

A University of Illinois-Urbana study found that rats eating a combination of broccoli and tomatoes had a lower rate of tumor growth than rats eating broccoli or tomatoes separately. Researcher John Erdman said the two foods bring out the best in each other, and maximize the cancer-fighting effect of the nutrients they contain. You can mix the two for optimum illness fighters!

When choosing broccoli in the market, select organic heads that have tight and compact bud clusters with an even dark color. The stems should be a lighter green than the buds and easy to pierce with a fingernail. Avoid stalks with yellowed or open bud clusters and stems that are hard and dry. Broccoli can be stored, unwashed, in a plastic bag in the refrigerator crisper for days. Before use, wash by rinsing in purified/filtered water with a splash of vinegar for disinfectant.

Storing broccoli: Refrigeration slows the conversion of sugar to lignin, thereby preserving texture and flavor; keeping broccoli chilled also protects vitamin C content. Store broccoli in an open plastic bag in the refrigerator crisper, which will provide the right balance of humidity and oxygen. Do not wash broccoli before storing; although it needs moisture to remain fresh, any water on its surface will encourage spoilage. Fresh broccoli is best if used within a day or two of purchase, but it will keep for up to four days in a crisper. Once cooked, any leftovers may be refrigerated for two to three days in a tightly covered container.

Our favorite ways of eating broccoli are steamed with a splash of seasoned rice vinegar, or raw with other veggies as a salad with lemon juice with virgin olive oil or flax seed oil as dressing. Also I like raw broccoli flowerets with sliced tomatoes and sliced sweet onions. Grandchildren like them with a bit of ranch dressing, which I don't think of as healthy, but a little once in a while isn't going to kill them and it gets them to eat the broccoli! I try to make Ranch dressing fresh so it's not quite as lethal.

Here is a great recipe:

Broccoli with Garlic

1 bunch of broccoli, OR 1 pound of frozen chopped broccoli
2 medium fresh tomatoes (cut into bite size pieces)
6 garlic cloves
1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
2 tablespoons purified/filtered water
1/4 teaspoon hot (cayenne) pepper (optional)

Wash broccoli and cut into small florets. Cut the tender parts of the stem into smallish cubes or save add to stew or make Broccoli Slaw.

Steam broccoli in until barely tender and still bright green. Don't overcook! For all cruciferous, this is a very important guideline!

Place olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Chop or mince the garlic. When the oil is hot, add sea salt, then the garlic. Saute' stirring frequently, just until the garlic starts to soften. Quickly add the water, and the cayenne if desired. Turn heat low and simmer for a couple of minutes.

Place the broccoli and fresh tomatoes in a large glass or crockery serving bowl. Pour the garlic mixture over it, mixing gently to coat each piece evenly. Serve and enjoy.

Chill leftovers and add to salad the next day.

The Omissions That Can Make You Sick!

Sadly the medical world is missing out on teaching true health and illness prevention? The worst part not being told is the fact that minerals are necessary for the formation of blood and bone, body fluids, cellular growth and healing, energy, muscle tone, and nerve function. Minerals are often vital in the absorption, function and effectiveness of certain vitamins. If minerals are not present in the proper proportion, then vitamins & foods are not sufficiently absorbed.

Even though information exists proving that minerals cannot be found in sufficient quantity in our food stuffs that are required in order to absorb our vitamins and nutrients, it still isn't being taught to our physicians and health care personnel! Read Senate Excerpts from 1936

Ommission #1. The body must maintain an adequate mineral supply to maintain a balance between internal and external pressures of the body cells called "osmotic equilibrium." This state must be maintained for normal cell function and continued youthful health. The body does not absorb Pill/rock minerals and only assimilates about 1% into your system, making it imperative to take ocean/sea based minerals for 99.9% absorption!

Ommission #2. All nutrients such as vitamins, proteins, enzymes, amino acids, carbohydrates, fats, sugars, oil, etc., require minerals for activity. All bodily processes depend upon the action of minerals to work properly.

Ommission #3. Trace minerals are more important in nutrition than vitamins. Vitamins can be synthesized by living matter - minerals cannot.

Ommission #4. Vitamins are required for every biochemical activity of the body BUT Vitamins cannot function unless minerals are present.

Omission #5. Minerals are what make enzyme functions possible. Minerals combine with enzymes into an alkaline detoxifying agent that neutralizes the acid metabolic by-products of the cells and other toxic conditions within the body and prepares them for elimination.

Omission #6. Glandular hormonal secretion is dependent upon mineral stimulation, which is insufficient to non-existent without minerals to balance, hence the upsurge of PMS and early menopause in women and Prostate cancer and other cancers in men.

Omission #7. The acid-alkaline balance (pH) of tissue fluid is controlled by minerals.

Omission #8. All elements work together as a collective whole. If there is a shortage of just one mineral, the balance of the entire bodily activity can be thrown awry. A deficiency of one mineral may disrupt the entire chain of life, rendering other nutrients either useless or inefficient.

The mineral concept is not brought into play by the traditional medical community! Food manufacturers would have you believe that you only need a dozen or maybe 32 minerals or trace minerals when if fact the body requires a total of 84 minerals and trace minerals in your system to balance and nourish your internal mechanisms that keep you alive and healthy!
