I visited my ophthalmologist yesterday for my two year check up only because I broke my glasses, which it seems now was a good thing. (Would be every 6 months visit if he had his way) I want to preface the following with; I was born with cataracts, called congenital cataracts, that are different than those that grow with aging and environmental exposure... They grow into the eye like roots in mountainous looking rather than on the eye in one growth and surgical success isn't too great at treating them, but when my drivers license were taken away, because of loss of vision acuity a few years ago I risked surgery and implants and won...

So Tuesday's conversation with my ophthalmologist went something like this: "Lena, you are an anomaly. Your left eye is now 20/20 up from 20/35 and that never happens with someone who has had congenital cataracts and especially post-cataract surgery! Your right eye is somewhat improved but not up to that great reading, although seems to be about the same degree compared to how severe it was. That just doesn't happen?"

I'm smiling as I listen and thinking he has no idea how to treat eyes for maximum health or he wouldn't say that, of course I would never tell him that. You can't retrain drug industry educated doctors unless they are open to it... I then tell him about my daily minerals and Vision herbs and what they have done for so many other people's vision so I am not surprised that I am the recipient of his good news. - He is really a nice man and for the most part as competent a physician as any - But in the midst of my telling him about the minerals and herbs he got this look on his face like he was seeing a monster or devil. He then, in a not very nice and very stern tone, proceeded to tell me that was not possible that there are no studies to base that on and no vitamin or herb will do that for the eyes... He just told me I was an anomaly but he doesn't want to believe how I became that anomaly. He then explained how studies are done on masses of people - I didn't bother to tell him I know exactly how they are done and have tracked and scored a few patient studies in my life in the medical offices and since 1986 I wear a $1200 watch on wrist, given me by the drug company, to prove it... He sounds like he thinks a study is going to make health happen? I am still amazed at his ideology? But I knew then it was time to shut up and let him have his erroneous belief that I would never convince him that he's listening to the wrong information from the wrong people. I accepted the good news with great elation, thanked him and went on my merry way. My glasses will have plain glass in the left lens and only 20/35+ up from 20/60 in the right... If my right eye wasn't so damaged by the years of cataracts and surgery I could do without glasses after 60 years of wearing them... I wanted to share my good news with you...

Iowa Doctors Say No to Drug Companies

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - A group of doctors say they'll no longer accept free coffee mugs, pens or other trinkets and free lunches from pharmaceutical representatives in an effort to keep their brand names in view, along with hopes the doctors will prescribe the drugs.

"It's just plain ethically wrong and it's designed to color our judgment," Dr. Dean Abramson of Gastroenterologists P.C. said of the practice. "I don't think patients realize how much drug companies spend on this."

According to a report by the California Public Interest Research Group, U.S. spending on "detailing" efforts by drug representatives to reach doctors directly totals nearly $5 billion annually, costs that are passed on to consumers.

A notice posted at the Cedar Rapids office notes the "exorbitant" price patients pay for drugs, adding: "Although we are fully aware that discontinuing our lunches will not lower this cost, we feel it is necessary for our company to do so."

The American Medical Association guidelines, which govern what doctors can accept, include items valued under $100 and the lunches drug representatives bring to office staffs.

The six Gastroenterologists P.C. doctors voted last month to no longer accept the trinkets and lunches or meet with drug representatives who come to the office.

Pharmaceutical companies bring speakers to the dinners to provide physicians with the latest health information. But Abramson sees it differently.

"It's a bribe," he said.

If doctors across the country chose to no longer accept the lunches and gifts, it might make a difference, Abramson said, adding "I'd like to see doctors everywhere say, 'We don't need a free lunch.'"

Drug industry officials disagree.

Ed Sagebiel, spokesman for Eli Lilly & Co., the maker of Prozac, said the pharmaceutical company spends more on research and development in one week than it does in a whole year on advertising.

According to the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, the pharmaceutical industry invested an estimated $33.2 billion in 2003 to develop new treatments for diseases, or nearly 18 percent of domestic sales on research and development, a higher ratio than any other U.S. industry.

Sagebiel said what Gastroenterologists P.C. has done is rare; most doctors value the role sales representatives play in providing useful product information.

I'm missing those nice little orange, yellowish green fruits that use to grow in our back yard in Southern California. It was easy to walk out and pull a few off the tree and eat them as a snack during the day or put in a bag to take to work for a morning or afternoon snack. We had two different types; the normal kumquat – small yellowish orange colored - and Limequates – greenish yellow color, both the shape and size of bird eggs - growing in our back yard that were absolutely refreshing and different and were ready for picking throughout the winter months. I loved slicing them into fruit salads as well as fresh off the trees as a snack. Tangy insides with a sweet peel, so different from other citrus that require peeling before eating.

Kumquats, also called Cumquat, kinkan or Fortunella crassifolia or as Chinese call them

Gold Oranges, are the fruits that are produced from small family of evergreen trees, similar to an orange tree, that grows to a height of 10 - 15 feet. Our kumquat and limequat trees were miniature and only about 5 feet tall but never failed to be loaded with fruit… Kumquats are truly the tiny jewels of the citrus kingdom. The bite-size fruit, which are eaten skin and all is a wonderful combination of tangy and sweet flavors unique to themselves. The seeds, similar to the seed of the orange with a distinctive green color, should not be eaten, but contain pectin, which can be removed by boiling for use in making jams and jellies.

Kumquat is a small little fruit that is said to be native to China and Indochina, where the trees can grow up to 10ft, and are much appreciated for their beauty and fruits. Dwarf kumquat trees are specially cultivated in pots for the Chinese New Year celebrations, when its fruits are used as edible decorations. In the U.S. they are mostly cultivated in California, Florida and the Gulf Coast. Slightly bigger than a Brazil nut, they have a thick sweet peel and a tart pulp. Excellent in marmalades, jellies, crystallized, minced or whole. They make an interesting addition to salads or in sweet and sour dishes.

Has the minerals that most citrus contain such as; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, Selenium along with the Vitamins C, B-6, B-12, A, E, folic acid, niacin, Thiamin and riboflavin. Making it very citrus but also a calming soothing food. So when you are out of sorts have a few kumquats!

Winter fruits that can brighten up a dreary winter day. Compact and bite-sized, you can eat kumquats as you would a grape. Just wash them and pop in your mouth. They're also nice in salads or as a garnish in drinks. They have a tangy citrus flavor and can be used in any dish that calls for oranges or grapefruit. Kumquats are high in fiber and vitamin C. There are variations of kumquats such as orangequats, lemonquats, and limequats. So no recipes as we like them raw…

Vitamin Users in Last-ditch Bid to Stop Ban on Supplements

Consumers and producers of popular vitamin and mineral supplements used by thousands every day will this week make a last- ditch attempt to prevent a European Union directive from banning them.

Campaigners claim products from well-known brands including Holland and Barrett, Solgar and Viridian will be removed from the shelves unless they are reformulated.

The campaign against the directive has enlisted the help of a number of high-profile supporters, including Cherie Blair's former lifestyle adviser Carole Caplin and the actress Jenny Seagrove. Dame Judi Dench and Bianca Jagger are also backing the campaign.

A third of women and a quarter of men take health food supplements in the UK and the market is thought to be worth at least pounds 350m a year.

The EU directive lists only 28 vitamins and minerals, and 112 sources from which they were derived for use in food supplements, which can be sold legally after it comes into force on 1 August. It would threaten up to 5,000 products, containing more than 200 nutrients, which campaigners claim have been used safely in specialist supplements for many years.

Some large chains, such as Boots, have already reformulated their products to meet the new EU rules and say their customers will see no difference when the directive comes into force. Also, manufacturers who submit detailed scientific dossiers by July this year that prove their ingredients are safe will still be allowed to sell their products.

Campaigners say the cost on suppliers could force smaller firms into bankruptcy. Few of the small health food companies can manage the expense - up to pounds 250,000 for each ingredient - and only a handful of safety dossiers are being prepared.

Consumers for Health Choice, who have been leading the campaign against the directive, said that products under threat include Solgar Prenatal Nutrients, which contain nutrient sources not on the EU's list, and Holland and Barrett's ABC Plus, which has a high dose of vitamin C.

A court case brought by the National Association of Health Stores and the British Health Foods Manufacturers Association will argue on Tuesday that Brussels is exceeding its powers by imposing a blanket ban. It is being contested by the EU's institutions and by the governments of Greece and Portugal as well as Britain.

On the same day, the Conservatives, who say the measure will outlaw virtually every popular multi-vitamin pill sold in the country, will call in the Commons for the ban to be scrapped.

Ministers are concerned that growing public opposition to the ban will affect the referendum on the European Constitution, due after the general election.

Peter Hain, the Leader of the House of Commons, has called it "unnecessary interference" by Brussels, and other ministers have privately expressed sympathy with the protesters. But the Government is still pressing ahead with the ban, and will defend it in the European Court case.

Some reports suggest that some products could cause problems in high doses, but a major body of research demonstrates that deficiencies in minerals and vitamins, levels of which are falling in modern diets, can cause heart disease, osteoporosis, cancer and other conditions.

A recent study published by the American Medical Association shows that taking some mineral and vitamin pills reduces the risk of contracting cancer and cardiovascular disease, and protects fetuses.

The ban, the first of a series of EU measures designed to outlaw a range of alternative medicines, is contained in the Food Supplements Directive, passed in 2002 to harmonise the trade in supplements between EU member states and after lobbying from the pharmaceutical industry.

Sue Croft, a spokeswoman for Consumers for Health Choice, said: "If this directive comes into force it will affect the lives of millions. To have these supplements removed and to put more strain on the NHS is nothing short of a crime. At the election we will be targeting those MPs who do not vote to stop this."

A spokeswoman for Boots, however, which has a third of the vitamin supplement market, said the company had been gradually reducing the level of vitamins and minerals in own-brand supplements in line with new safety levels.

"Consumers won't see a huge change," a spokeswoman said. "We fully support this EU directive."
