The 10 Worst Corporations of 2004
By Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman,
January 26, 2005.
The year's most egregious price gougers, polluters, union-busters,
dictator-coddlers, fraudsters, poisoners, deceivers and general
miscreants.
It is never easy choosing the 10 Worst Corporations of the Year - there
are always more deserving nominees than we can possibly recognize. One
of the greatest challenges facing the judges is the directive not to
select repeat recipients from last year's 10 Worst designation.
The no-repeat rule forbids otherwise-deserving companies - like Bayer,
Boeing, Clear Channel and Halliburton - from returning to the 10 Worst
list in 2004.
Of the remaining pool of price gougers, polluters, union-busters,
dictator-coddlers, fraudsters, poisoners, deceivers and general
miscreants, we chose the following - presented in alphabetical order -
as the 10 Worst Corporations of 2004:
In December 2003, the company raised the U.S. price of its anti-AIDS
drug Norvir (generic name ritanovir) by 400 percent. That is, unless the
product is used in conjunction with other Abbott products - in which
case the price increase is zero.

Thought For The Day

Does your skin shrink in water?
If you spend an hour in the pool or bath, you'll notice, of course, that
the skin on your hands and feet becomes shriveled. That's not because
the skin is shrinking, however. It's because the skin is expanding from
the absorption of water. Skin over the hands and feet is thicker than in
other places and when these areas of thicker skin become saturated, they
expand. Because of their denseness, wrinkles appear and the skin becomes
whiter from the increased water content. Thinner skin elsewhere in the
body has more room to absorb water, so wrinkles take longer to appear.
Interestingly, skin does not wrinkle from seawater because seawater
is so similar to the fluids in our body.

Instant Tea May Have Too Much Fluoride
Jan 26, 2005
By CHERYL WITTENAUER
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Instant tea may be a source of harmful levels of
fluoride that can lead to bone pain, researchers discovered after they
looked into the case of a woman who drank one to two gallons of
super-strength tea daily.
Scientists say it's not the country's biggest dietary problem. But it
does make the point "all things in moderation," said lead researcher Dr.
Michael Whyte of the Washington University School of Medicine.
He said the study tested 10 brands of instant tea at regular-strength
levels in fluoride-free water; they didn't test brewed or bottled tea.
Fluoride levels ranged from 1.0 to 6.5 parts per million. The maximum
level allowed in drinking water by the Environmental Protection Agency
is 4 ppm.
Fluoride is absorbed naturally into tea plants from soil and rain water,
and varies from "year to year, harvest to harvest and hill to hill ...
and among regions of the world," Whyte said.
Swallowing high levels of fluoride boosts bone density, but also makes
bones more brittle. It can lead to skeletal fluorosis, which causes bone
pain, calcified ligaments, bone spurs, fused vertebrae and difficulty in
moving joints. It's a rare condition in the United States, Whyte said,
but in some countries is more common than osteoporosis.
He said regular consumers of high-fluoride brick tea made from old
leaves, berries and plant twigs in parts of China and Tibet suffer
aching, dense, poor-quality bones.
It was this rare condition that prompted the Washington University
study. Scientists wanted to find the cause of a middle-aged woman's
spinal pain. Tests revealed high levels of fluoride in her urine. She
then disclosed she drank one to two gallons of double-strength instant
tea each day.
Now she drinks lemonade. Although her fluoride levels are back to
normal, her bone density remains high but her pain has eased.
Aside from pointing to the need to drink tea in moderation, the study
suggests more research into tea's fluoride content is needed. The
findings were in the January issue of the American Journal of Medicine.
Fluoride is added to most major cities' drinking water to help prevent
tooth decay. A British analysis in 2000 of numerous fluoride studies
found no increased risk of bone fractures among the elderly from adding
fluoride to drinking water.
Joe Simrany, president of the Tea Association of the United States, said
"drinking tea is an entirely safe proposition. You'd have to consume so
much tea for it to become an issue."
Dr. Michael Kleerekoper, a professor of medicine at Wayne State
University who conducted a five-year, nationwide study of fluoride
treatment for osteoporosis in the 1980s, said Whyte's study shows that
anything consumed to excess is not good, whether it's "four gallons of
pop or two liters of whiskey."
"Of all the dietary excess in society today, this is probably not the
biggest culprit," he said. "I'm not minimizing his work, but the problem
is one of excess."
The American Journal of Medicine
Washington University School of
Medicine
Tea Association of the
United States
LENA'S COMMENT: I have to say anyone who would
drink a gallon, much less two gallons of instant tea a day has a huge
problem with control and I suspect she has a lot of other problems
beside fluoride poisoning! Water at two gallons a day, unless you weigh
500 lbs would create a problem as well! She was the canary in the mine
for the rest of the world with her excess... That is definitely in
excess but fluoride in tea is a problem and should not be ignored! I
have a problem with the statement; Swallowing high levels of
fluoride boosts bone density, but also makes bones more brittle. Are
they trying to justify fluoride safety while saying it's bad? That's my
guess - A contradiction in terms there!

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Healthy Fortunella crassifolia!
I'm missing those nice little orange, yellowish
green fruits that use to grow in our back yard in Southern California.
It was easy to walk out and pull a few off the tree and eat them as a
snack during the day or put in a bag to take to work for a morning or
afternoon snack. We had two different types; the normal kumquat – small
yellowish orange colored - and Limequates – greenish yellow color, both
the shape and size of bird eggs - growing in our back yard that were
absolutely refreshing and different and were ready for picking
throughout the winter months. I loved slicing them into fruit salads as
well as fresh off the trees as a snack. Tangy insides with a sweet peel,
so different from other citrus that require peeling before eating.
Kumquats, also called Cumquat, kinkan
or Fortunella crassifolia or as Chinese call them
Gold Oranges, are the fruits that are
produced from small family of evergreen trees, similar to an orange
tree, that grows to a height of 10 - 15 feet. Our kumquat and limequat
trees were miniature and only about 5 feet tall but never failed to be
loaded with fruit… Kumquats are truly the tiny jewels of the citrus
kingdom. The bite-size fruit, which are eaten skin and all is a
wonderful combination of tangy and sweet flavors unique to themselves.
The seeds, similar to the seed of the orange with a distinctive green
color, should not be eaten, but contain pectin, which can be removed by
boiling for use in making jams and jellies.
Kumquat is a small little fruit that is said to be
native to China and Indochina, where the trees can grow up to 10ft, and
are much appreciated for their beauty and fruits. Dwarf kumquat trees
are specially cultivated in pots for the Chinese New Year celebrations,
when its fruits are used as edible decorations. In the U.S. they are
mostly cultivated in California, Florida and the Gulf Coast. Slightly
bigger than a Brazil nut, they have a thick sweet peel and a tart pulp.
Excellent in marmalades, jellies, crystallized, minced or whole. They
make an interesting addition to salads or in sweet and sour dishes.
Has the minerals that most citrus contain such as;
Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc,
Copper, Manganese, Selenium along with the Vitamins C, B-6, B-12, A, E,
folic acid, niacin, Thiamin and riboflavin. Making it very citrus but
also a calming soothing food. So when you are out of sorts have a few
kumquats!
Winter fruits that can brighten up a dreary winter
day. Compact and bite-sized, you can eat kumquats as you would a grape.
Just wash them and pop in your mouth. They're also nice in salads or as
a garnish in drinks. They have a tangy citrus flavor and can be used in
any dish that calls for oranges or grapefruit. Kumquats are high in
fiber and vitamin C. There are variations of kumquats such as
orangequats, lemonquats, and limequats. So no recipes as we like them
raw…
If you live in an area where you are privy to
having access to the kumquat family take advantage of these healthy
little citrus fruits.

Making a Fortune by Wagering That Drug Prices
Tend to Rise
By STEPHANIE SAUL
January 26, 2005
Stewart Rahr's new $45 million East Hampton estate, the most
expensive house ever purchased in New York State, is just across
the pond from Steven Spielberg's. Mr. Rahr plays golf with
Donald Trump and practices putting on an indoor green in the
basement of his warehouse in Queens. He and his wife, Carol,
last drew attention in 2003 when they bought four works of art,
including a Renoir and a Picasso, in one sitting at Sotheby's.
But as he becomes increasingly visible as one of New York's
wealthiest men, Mr. Rahr, a 58-year-old law school dropout, is
girding himself for the elimination of the system that helped
generate his fortune. His success offers a rare glimpse into a
lucrative but little-known corner of the pharmaceutical industry
- the once-mundane business of delivering drugs from
manufacturers to pharmacies.
Over the last 20 years, the packing and shipping of drugs
evolved into a game of arbitrage, called speculative buying,
with distributors like Mr. Rahr wagering on drug price
increases.
This common industry practice seems more fitting to a casino
than a distribution warehouse. And in the 1990's and the early
years of this decade, with prices far outstripping inflation, it
was a sure bet.
Knowing that drug manufacturers typically increased prices at
the same time, often in January, drug middlemen like Mr. Rahr,
the sole owner of Kinray, which is based in Queens, made
millions by overstocking their warehouses before manufacturers
announced price increases. By acquiring extra inventory at the
lower price, distributors made quick profits once they sold the
drugs at higher prices a short time later to retail pharmacies.
Prescription drug prices are a combustible political issue, and
manufacturers feel intense pressure to restrain them. With their
historically large profits threatened, and with regulators
questioning aspects of the speculative buying system, the
manufacturers have taken steps to shut it by limiting
distributors to just one month's worth of inventory. Drug
manufacturers have also begun using special software to help
detect speculative buying.
Mr. Rahr would not disclose exactly how much he made through
speculative buying. Goldman Sachs estimated that the
distribution industry, which is dominated by three large public
companies, made 60 percent of its profit, or $980 million, from
speculative buying in 2001, when the practice was at its peak.
More recently, Goldman Sachs estimated speculative buying's
contribution at 40 percent of profits.
Mr. Rahr, who honed the practice with the help of a computer
program, said that his profit from the practice never reached 40
percent.

LENA'S COMMENT: Another form of gambling with legal drug!
Poor man never reached 40% profit! Wall street drug pusher at
the top! Drugs are not only big business in dark corners but in
the world of high finance gambling as well . He is no better
than the street drug pusher in my books... Who can sink so low
as to get rich at the expense of the people who can least
afford it? Legalized drug pushers and
pharmaceutical companies that's who!

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~~^~^~^
Chlorine Factories Eyed As Pollution
Jan 26, 2005
By MARTHA MENDOZA
(AP) Nine chlorine plants in the nation pour at least eight tons of
mercury into the environment each year - a situation that demands
federal action to force companies to convert to cleaner technology,
activists said Wednesday.
Environmentalists think the amount of mercury emitted by the plants may
be even greater; the industry acknowledges that tons of the toxic metal
are unaccounted for each year, though it does not believe that mercury
is dumped into the environment.
Chlorine at the plants is made by pumping electrically charged salty
water through a vat of mercury, a process devised more than 100 years
ago. Environmentalists say these plants are a largely ignored and
unchecked source of mercury pollution.
Mercury settles in waterways and accumulates in fish. In humans who eat
those fish, the metal can cause neurological and developmental problems,
particularly in fetuses and children.
Citing chlorine factories as a "major global source of mercury," the
Washington, D.C.-based environmental group Oceana on Wednesday called on
the Environmental Protection Agency to require all the plants to convert
to mercury-free technology by 2008.
"Fifteen years ago, Congress amended the Clean Air Act, which requires
companies like these to continually improve to cut down releases of
hazardous chemicals like mercury," said Andrew Sharpless, Oceana's chief
executive officer, at a news conference. "But rather than enforce this
law, the EPA is still giving these chlorine plants a pass and letting
them continue to release tons of mercury every year with their 19th
century technology."
Arthur Duncan, vice president of safety and health for The Chlorine
Institute, a trade group based in Arlington, Va., said emissions have
been significantly reduced in the past decade.
"Certainly mercury has been a concern for a long time to people and it's
an environmental issue that we're working to address," he said.
The calculations of how much mercury is dispersed into the environment
are in dispute. The industry, in reports to the EPA, says eight tons -
about three 50-gallon barrels - were emitted in 2003.
For example, the companies said a plant in Muscle Shoals, Ala., emitted
1,757 pounds of mercury that year; another, in New Castle, Del.,
released 2,863 pounds.
But the environmentalists say these calculations may be wrong, because
while the companies monitor the amount of mercury that goes out of their
smokestacks, they merely estimate the amount that evaporates and leaves
the factories through vents.
In addition, industry officials acknowledge that they cannot acount for
an additional 30 tons a year. They say that it could be stuck in factory
pipes, and they are trying to find it.
The environmentalists are skeptical. They think even more mercury is
missing, pointing out that more mercury is delivered to the plants each
year than is going out - 65 tons more in 2000 alone, said Oceana's
Jacqueline Savitz, co-author of the report.
But industry officials say that mercury purchases do not necessarily
equal mercury use, because some of it is simply stored to be used later.
EPA spokeswoman Cynthia Bergman said the question of where all this
mercury went is very important to her agency, but that the EPA's "best
information indicates that the mercury is not being emitted into the
air."
While total mercury emissions in the United States have fallen
substantially since 1990, power plants remain the largest remaining
human-caused source. They released 90,370 pounds of mercury into the air
in 2002, the most recent year for which EPA data are available.
Federal guidelines released last February place strict limits on the
amount of mercury that power plants can release.
They place no similar caps on chlorine plants, but do require more
frequent emission measurements and equipment inspections, "significantly
more stringent requirements" than had been in force before, said Vito
Fiore, a vice president of Vulcan Chemicals, which has a plant in Port
Edwards, Wis.
Last year, three environmental groups - Earthjustice, Natural Resources
Defense Council and Sierra Club - sued the EPA and began using other
legal channels to get power plant emission limits extended to chlorine
plants.
The other plants are in Charleston, Tenn.; New Martinsville, W.Va.;
Ashtabula, Ohio; Lake Charles, La.; St. Gabriel, La., and Augusta, Ga.
