This month really flew by starting 2007 off on the fast track in my
life. The fast track really require diligence in health building and so
it's time to make sure I'm doing all I can do to give me quality of
life... I do not require longevity unless quality is included in that.
There really is something worse than death, in my books anyway, and
that is bad health keeping me from doing what I wish to do! Thank you
but I'll take quality-of-life over quantity any day! I'm not saying that
you have to feel that way as I do not wish to push my ideas on you... I
only hope
you are taking charge of your health and not letting someone else decide

Mammogram Rate Drops
Slightly in U.S.
Jan 25, 2007
By MIKE STOBBE
ATLANTA (AP) - The percentage of American women getting mammograms has
dropped slightly over the past few years, in what health officials said
Thursday is a troubling sign that the battle against breast cancer may
be flagging.
The share of women 40 and older who said they had a mammogram in the
previous two years slipped from 76.4 percent to 74.6 percent between
2000 and 2005, according to a study released by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
The rate had risen dramatically over the past two decades, from 29
percent in 1987, according to American Cancer Society statistics.
The CDC and other researchers said possible explanations for the drop
include a shortage of mammography screening centers and specialists, and
a lack of health insurance among patients.
Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, the cancer society's deputy chief medical officer,
said the decline may also reflect complacency among women.
"This is a group of women who have 'grown up' with mammography as
they've aged, they've perhaps had it done many times over the years and
they've decided, 'Well, it's been OK, maybe I can put it off for a
while,'" he said.
He warned that the recently reported declines in breast cancer incidence
rates and cancer deaths are at risk if the decline continues. "If we
don't pay attention now, we run the risk of seeing some of the gains
we've made reversed," he said.
The decline of less than 2 percentage points may seem small, but it
could be terribly significant, Lichtenfeld said. But if you consider
that about 80 million U.S. women should be getting a mammogram every
year, it means more than 1 million fewer women are getting the screening
test, he said.
And that may mean thousands of cases of breast cancer may not be
diagnosed. Women whose breast cancer is caught early have more treatment
options and a better chance of beating the disease.
The decline may also at least partly explain a recent drop in U.S.
breast cancer rates: It may be that if fewer women are getting
mammograms, fewer cases of breast cancer are being discovered.
Some researchers instead tied the drop in breast cancer to reduced use
of hormones for menopause.
The study is being published this week in a CDC publication, Morbidity
and Mortality Weekly Report. It was based on a national telephone survey
of more than 14,000 women in each of the survey years.
The study is not the first to spot the decline. The cancer society keeps
statistics, derived from a different national survey, that showed a
slight decline in mammogram from 2000 to 2003. Another study of HMO
patients showed a decline in screening rates from 1999 to 2002.
Mammography rates increased substantially during the 1990s, so there
seems to have been some turning point around 2000.
LENA'S COMMENT: One week they tell us that
breast cancer death rates are down due to mammograms and this week they
tell us mammogram
rates are down and have been declining for some years now? What's the
real story here? Does it matter? Not to me and actually not to most
women... In my twenty plus years in the medical office I found
that mammograms were seldom ever responsible for finding and diagnosing
breast cancer! Women doing breast exams found breast cancer! And the fact that the last two weeks of these
breast cancer related announcements tells me that's still the case... More women do monthly
breast exams now than in times past therefore more breast cancers are detected early
enough to treat! Of course there are natural breast cancer treatments
and prevention that would make all this a moot point, if followed!

Chlorine Dangers create the atmosphere for heart attack and heart
disease; "The highly reactive nature of the chlorine molecule
scars the arterial intima [the inner lining of the artery]. The
body protects itself by painting a thin film of cholesterol over the
damaged area. It's not the cholesterol that kills, it's the continual
need for protection against the scars that eventually gets out of hand."

Getting the most nutrients
from your fruits and vegetables!
When we eat a regular salad, it is impossible to chew that salad
sufficiently to release all the nutrients, because we do not break down the cell
structure of the food completely no matter how well we chew it. Blending
vegetables and fruits changes that premise. Dr. Blaylock, in the Blaylock
Report, says: "Consuming two servings of vegetables in their blenderized state
is the same as eating five to seven servings whole. . . By liquefying your
produce, you get at least 80% absorption compared to the 20% or 30% you would get
by simply eating them whole."

Building
bones, no dairy case needed Prunes, onions and other produce
seem to help. Next up is figuring out the details.
By Susan Bowerman, LA Times
January 29, 2007
If you were asked to name a few foods that promote healthy
bones, you'd probably list dairy products for their
bone-building calcium and vitamin D.
It's a lot less likely that prunes, onions and fermented
soybeans would come to mind.
In fact, it has been known for some time that a high intake of
fruits and vegetables helps keep bones strong and prevents
fractures as people age.
Now nutrition scientists are trying to pinpoint the bioactive
compounds in produce that appear to have this effect. And
they're testing whether adding particular fruits and vegetables
to the diet can keep osteoporosis at bay.
In a study underway at Florida State University, older women who
have osteoporosis will be adding either a daily handful of dried
apples or about 10 dried plums to their diet for a year. The
investigators are betting that the prune eaters will have
measurable restoration in their bone mass based on observations
they made in a similar but shorter study.
Although that study was too brief to measure changes in bone
density ? something the new study will allow ? the women who ate
10 dried plums daily had significantly higher blood levels of
two compounds (the hormone IGF-1 and the enzyme BSAP) that are
associated with greater rates of bone formation.
What do prunes offer that other dried fruits don't? Various
substances, and scientists don't yet know which among them is
most important. Prunes contain small amounts of calcium and
magnesium - both bone-building minerals - and some natural acids
that could improve mineral absorption.
They are a rich source of antioxidant polyphenols, which also
could be bone protective. They're also rich in boron, a
bone-building mineral that is often lacking in the diet. (Boron
prevents excretion of calcium and magnesium, which allows these
minerals to be deposited in bone tissue.)
Fiber, too, could be important in the bone-produce connection:
Plant foods are rich sources of this. Studies have focused on a
group of fibers known as fructans, which are plant carbohydrates
found in some leaves, roots and tubers.
One fructan, inulin, is fermented by certain beneficial bacteria
in the intestine, producing a more acidic environment that
favors calcium absorption.
Inulin is found in leeks, garlic, artichokes, jicama and,
especially, onions. This may explain some findings by
researchers at the University of Bern in Switzerland who tested
the benefits of various vegetables on bone.
Rats consuming a diet designed to mimic our typical Western fare
- high in refined starch, sugar and fat - preserved more bone
mass during a period of four weeks when dried vegetables were
added to their chow. Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, garlic,
parsley, carrots and a salad mixture all provided some benefit,
but onions were the clear winner.
Onion-fed rats increased their total bone mineral content by
more than 17%. However, they were fed the human equivalent of
about a quart of chopped onions a day. Further studies should
help reveal the lowest beneficial dose.
There is also a growing body of research on the role played by
vitamin K, which influences the binding of calcium to bone. Most
of the vitamin K we consume is in a form called phylloquinone,
found in green vegetables such as broccoli, lettuce and spinach.
Another form, menaquinone, is obtained in much smaller amounts
from certain foods (butter, cheese, liver, egg yolk) but can
also be made by bacteria in our intestines.
One of the menaquinones, MK-7, shows particular promise in
promoting bone health. It's found in abundance in natto - a
fermented soybean product and Japanese dietary staple with a
sticky texture and strong cheesy odor that may make it a hard
sell for American taste buds.
A recent study in Japan followed nearly 1,000 women for three
years to determine the effects of natto and other soy products
on bone mineral density. Natto had the strongest protective
effect: It reduced bone loss at the top of the thighbone by more
than 80% - and, interestingly, this benefit increased as the
women got older.
These women ate more than four packs of natto a week; each pack
contains about 350 micrograms of MK-7.
Soy products also contain isoflavones, which have been shown to
protect bone in some studies.
But other soy foods were not nearly as protective as natto,
leading researchers to lean toward vitamin K as the source of
the bone protection.
If fermented soybeans don't appeal, try miso, another fermented
soy food rich in MK-7. It's sold as a paste and available in
specialty grocery stores.
Stir a bit into boiling water for a quick soup, or thin with a
little wine or broth and try it as a marinade for fish or
poultry. Add slivered onion and you have a potentially
bone-building brew.
Although fruits and vegetables are known to reduce the risk of
cancer and heart disease, many people still fall short in
consuming enough of them. Perhaps if we add osteoporosis
prevention to the list of reasons to consume a plant-rich diet,
it will push us to actually do so.

Federal study shows that
fish caught off L.A. County still contain the world's highest
levels of the pesticide 35 years after it was banned.
By Marla Cone, Times Staff Writer
January 28, 2007
Many fish caught off Los Angeles County still contain extremely
high levels of DDT, a sign that anglers and consumers remain at
risk and that the ocean's ecosystem may be far from recovery 35
years after the pesticide was banned.
Newly released data from a federal survey indicate that fish
caught in the area contained the world's highest-known DDT
concentrations. Among 1,200 fish caught from Ventura to Dana
Point, white croaker off San Pedro and the Palos Verdes
Peninsula were the most highly contaminated. Fish off Orange
County and areas north of the Redondo Beach Pier had low
concentrations.
The data, collected primarily in 2002, offer the most
comprehensive look at the scope of contamination from a 100-ton
deposit of DDT that still covers several square miles of the
ocean floor decades after the pesticide flowed into county
sewers beginning in the late 1940s.
More recent annual sampling by Los Angeles County, far less
extensive than the federal survey, suggests that the DDT levels
in fish may be improving but still far exceed safe levels.
In response to the new federal findings, the state's
environmental health agency is reevaluating the risks of eating
locally caught fish, which could result in updates to a health
advisory and a commercial fishing ban that have been in effect
since 1991.
Fish from local waters are often eaten by recreational anglers
and subsistence fishermen, who catch them from piers and boats.
Some highly contaminated white croaker is still showing up in a
handful of Asian markets in Los Angeles and Orange counties.
The levels "are lower than what we historically have seen" in
the 1970s and '80s, "but they are still levels of concern to
us," said Sharon Lin, a Superfund project manager at the
Environmental Protection Agency's San Francisco office.
Banned in the United States in 1972, DDT is classified as a
probable human carcinogen and has been linked to liver disease,
reproductive damage and altered hormones in lab animals and
wildlife. So much DDT remains in bald eagles on Santa Catalina
Island that their chicks die unless the weakened eggs are
removed from the island to hatch.
The data from the federal survey by the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration and the Environmental Protection
Agency suggest that there has been no improvement since the late
1980s, when the last regional fish survey was conducted. Some
scientists have long theorized that the DDT on the ocean floor
has been breaking down into less-toxic compounds and would soon
disappear from marine life.
Yet at least through 2002, when most of the fish were caught for
the survey, the DDT - as well as industrial compounds called
PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls - remained a threat to people
eating white croaker and several other species of local fish,
particularly in waters off the Palos Verdes Peninsula and in San
Pedro Bay.
"Things have not changed a whole lot in the last decade or so,"
said David Witting, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration fish biologist who directed the survey. "The
biggest concern is still lower Santa Monica Bay, Palos Verdes
Shelf and much of San Pedro Bay. The species that is
consistently the most highly contaminated is still white
croaker."
Manufacturing pesticides at a plant near Torrance from 1947 to
1971, the Montrose Chemical Co. released about 2,000 tons of DDT
into county sewers, which empty into the ocean via an outfall
off White Point on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The pesticide
adheres to sediment and continues to seep into marine creatures.
Mark Gold, executive director of the Santa Monica-based
environmental group Heal the Bay, said the scope of the
contamination revealed by the new fish data was worse than he
thought.
"Not only have things not improved for contaminated fish off
Palos Verdes, but this data shows that the concern is more
far-ranging than we originally thought," Gold said. "Hot fish
off Palos Verdes is no surprise, but we're finding hot fish all
the way from the Redondo Pier throughout San Pedro Bay, and it's
for a wide variety of species, not just the bottom-dwelling
ones."
The goals of the survey are to update health advisories on which
fish are unsafe to eat and to help the EPA decide whether to
attempt to seal off the ocean deposit with a thick cap of sand,
which could cost tens of millions of dollars.
In addition to white croaker - which feeds on the ocean floor -
kelp bass, barred sandbass, scorpionfish and rockfish also
contained some high levels above half a part per million.
The highest readings were in white croaker from the middle of
San Pedro Bay - about 1.5 miles offshore in an area called
Horseshoe Kelp - and near the Cabrillo Pier, half a mile beyond
the breakwater. The average at Horseshoe Kelp was 3.2 parts per
million of DDT, with one fish reaching almost 13 ppm.
Generally, 10% of the white croaker caught in San Pedro Bay were
highly contaminated while the rest had lower levels. The "hot"
ones probably migrated from the DDT deposit off White Point,
Witting said.
Waters at the southern end of Santa Monica Bay, between Redondo
Beach and Palos Verdes Estates, also had some highly
contaminated croaker and barred sandbass. Pacific mackerel,
opaleye and jacksmelt had the lowest concentrations.
All fish caught off Ventura County - even white croaker - had
little contamination, and low levels also were found in fish off
Long Beach, Seal Beach and Huntington Beach.
