Greetings and thank you for
being an optin subscriber!
I'm back and
thankfully our ISP fixed their major problem and we are now back to
normal. It is really a nuisance when you can't receive or send email as
you would like simply because something blew with the ISP, probably the
only entity that can hold up thousands if not millions of peoples
correspondence... Oh well, such is life on the internet. If I had been
in the office all that time I would not have taken it so lightly, so I'm
thankful my husband took us out of town for a few days.
It's the end of the month along with end of the week and time to take
charge of your health and life if you wish to stay healthy. Have you
done that? Have you evaluated your health needs to assure the best
health and longevity you can have?

Chicken pox cases up
despite vaccine
SAN ANTONIO ? Texas recorded a 41 percent increase in
cases of chicken pox from 2005 to 2006, despite an eight-year-old
requirement that children be vaccinated before they can enter
kindergarten.
Texas enacted the vaccine requirement for the 2000-2001 school year, but
has not mandated a booster for children between the ages of 4 and 6.
Shirley Schreiber, director of health services with the Northside
Independent School District in San Antonio, said vaccinated students who
get chicken pox end up staying home the same number of days as they
would have without the vaccine.
"Parents would get very frustrated when the youngsters would come down
with a case and it would be a milder case of varicella, because they had
been vaccinated," she said.
In Bexar County, the number of recorded chicken pox cases grew from 420
in 2003 to 520 in 2006 and 861 last year.
"Most of the time, we ask them: 'Did you get the vaccine?'" said Roger
Sanchez, an epidemiologist with the San Antonio Metropolitan Health
District. "Virtually all of them say yes."

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================
A recent
study conducted at the University of California, Davis, uncovered that
one of the chemicals commonly added to antibacterial soaps can interfere
with normal hormonal activity in the body. The researchers found that
this chemical increased a process known as gene expression which is
normally regulated by testosterone. They also discovered that when they
fed the chemical to male mice, the animals' prostate glands grew
abnormally large.
The chemical causing these problems is called triclocarban (also known
as TCC and 3,4,4'-trichlorocarbanilide), and it can be found in many
common personal cleanser products including bar and liquid soaps, wipes,
and lotions. One more good reason to read those labels before you buy
anything!

Food Poisoning Can Be Long-Term Problem
Jan 22, 2008
By LAURAN NEERGAARD
WASHINGTON (AP) - It's a dirty little secret of food poisoning: E. coli and
certain other foodborne illnesses can sometimes trigger serious health problems
months or years after patients survived that initial bout. Scientists only now
are unraveling a legacy that has largely gone unnoticed.
What they've spotted so far is troubling. In interviews with The Associated
Press, they described high blood pressure, kidney damage, even full kidney
failure striking 10 to 20 years later in people who survived severe E. coli
infection as children, arthritis after a bout of salmonella or shigella, and a
mysterious paralysis that can attack people who just had mild symptoms of
campylobacter.
"Folks often assume once you're over the acute illness, that's it, you're back
to normal and that's the end of it," said Dr. Robert Tauxe of the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention. The long-term consequences are "an important but
relatively poorly documented, poorly studied area of foodborne illness."
These late effects are believed to make up a very small fraction of the nation's
76 million annual food poisonings, although no one knows just how many people
are at risk. A bigger question is what other illnesses have yet to be
scientifically linked to food poisoning.
And with a rash of food recalls - including more than 30 million pounds of
ground beef pulled off the market last year alone - these are questions are
taking on new urgency.
"We're drastically underestimating the burden on society that foodborne
illnesses represent," contends Donna Rosenbaum of the consumer advocacy group
STOP, Safe Tables Our Priority.
Every week, her group hears from patients with health complaints that they
suspect or have been told are related to food poisoning years earlier, like a
woman who survived severe E. coli at 8 only to have her colon removed in her
20s. Or people who develop diabetes after food poisoning inflamed the pancreas.
Or parents who wonder if a child's learning problems stem from food
poisoning-caused dialysis as a toddler.
"There's nobody to refer them to for an answer," says Rosenbaum.
So STOP this month is beginning the first national registry of food-poisoning
survivors with long-term health problems - people willing to share their medical
histories with scientists in hopes of boosting much-needed research.
Consider Alyssa Chrobuck of Seattle, who at age 5 was hospitalized as part of
the Jack-in-the-Box hamburger outbreak that 15 years ago this month made a
deadly E. coli strain notorious.
She's now a successful college student but ticks off a list of health problems
unusual for a 20-year-old: High blood pressure, recurring hospitalizations for
colon inflammation, a hiatal hernia, thyroid removal, endometriosis.
"I can't eat fatty foods. I can't eat things that are fried, never been able to
eat ice cream or milkshakes," says Chrobuck. "Would I have this many medical
problems if I hadn't had the E. coli? Definitely not. But there's no way to tie
it definitely back."
The CDC says foodborne illnesses cause 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths
a year. Among survivors, some long-term consequences are obvious from the
outset. Some required kidney transplants. They may have scarred intestines that
promise lasting digestive difficulty.
But when people appear to recover, it is difficult to prove that later problems
really are a food-poisoning legacy and not some unfortunate coincidence. It may
be that people prone to certain gastrointestinal conditions, for instance, also
are genetically more vulnerable to germs that cause foodborne illness.
For now, some of the best evidence comes from the University of Utah, which has
long tracked children with E. coli. About 10 percent of E. coli sufferers
develop a life-threatening complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome, or
HUS, where their kidneys and other organs fail.
Ten to 20 years after they recover, between 30 percent and half of HUS survivors
will have some kidney-caused problem, says Dr. Andrew Pavia, the university's
pediatric infectious diseases chief. That includes high blood pressure caused by
scarred kidneys, slowly failing kidneys, even end-stage kidney failure that
requires dialysis.
"I don't want to leave the message that everyone who had symptoms ... is in
trouble," stresses Pavia.
Miserable as E. coli is, it doesn't seem to trigger long-term problems unless it
started shutting down the kidneys the first time around, he says. "People with
uncomplicated diarrhea, by and large we don't have evidence yet that they have
complications."
Other proven long-term consequences:
About 1 in 1,000 sufferers of campylobacter, a diarrhea-causing infection spread
by raw poultry, develop far more serious Guillain-Barre syndrome a month or so
later. Their body attacks their nerves, causing paralysis that usually requires
intensive care and a ventilator to breathe. About a third of the nation's
Guillain-Barre cases have been linked to previous campylobacter, even if the
diarrhea was very mild, and they typically suffer a more severe case than
patients who never had food poisoning.
While they eventually recover, "We don't know a great deal about what happens to
those people five years later. What does 'normal' look like?" Tauxe says.
_A small number of people develop what's called reactive arthritis six months or
longer after a bout of salmonella. It causes joint pain, eye inflammation,
sometimes painful urination, and can lead to chronic arthritis. Certain strains
of shigella and yersinia bacteria, far more common abroad than in the U.S.,
trigger this reactive arthritis, too, Tauxe says.
What about other patient complaints?
A variety of other organ problems might be triggered by HUS, that severe E. coli
- because it causes blood clots all over the body that could leave a trail of
damage, says Utah's Pavia. Among his hottest questions: HUS patients often
suffer pancreatitis. Does that increase risk for diabetes later in life?
But proving a connection will require tracking a lot of patients who can provide
very good medical records documenting their initial foodborne illness, he
cautions.

FOOD OF THE WEEK

Star fruit a.k.a.
Carambola, Belimbing (Malaysia), Carambolier (French), Ma Fueng
(Thailand), Fuang (Laos), Khe (Vietnam) Averrhoa carambola, belonging to
the Oxalidaceae family.
Can be slightly sweet or
very sour depending on which species you choose. A strange looking,
bumpy, unique, waxy, golden yellow to green fruit that has a 5 pointed
star shape when cut across the middle of the fruit, ranging from 3 to 5
inches long with four to six deep lengthwise grooves, is popular in many
countries. When it is sliced crosswise, the slices are shaped like
stars, thus its common name, star fruit. Citrus nutrients similar to
other exotic citrus!
Star fruit of tart and sweet varieties.
Tart varieties generally have narrowly spaced ribs; sweet varieties have
thick, fleshy ribs. Origin is actually unknown but said to originate in
Sri Lanka and the Moluccas, and cultivated in Southeast Asia and
Malaysia for several hundred years. An excellent source of vitamin C,
supplying 35% of the Daily Value in 3 1/2 ounces, which is equal to a
small whole fruit or about 2/3 cup sliced. I was unable to find more
distinct vitamins and minerals listed in any of the University
extensions that usually list those things but the statement; "Nutrients
similar to other citrus fruits" and we know that is good...
Handle with care! They bruise easily. Star fruit (the sweet variety) can
be eaten out of hand or sliced and used as a garnish or in salads. They
are also used in chutney, curries and tarts. The juice can be used in
tropical drinks and smoothies. Star fruit is easy to prepare, because it
does not require peeling or seeding. It can be eaten out of hand after
it has been thoroughly washed. Spray with vinegar or silver water and
wash under cold running water. Cut it crosswise into thin slices. If the
skin is unappealing, though it doesn't affect the taste, simply peel it
off with a paring knife.
Ripe fruit should be stored at room temperature for two to three days or
refrigerated, unwashed, in a tightly covered container or plastic bag
for up to one week.
Healthy properties are said to, reduce fever and cough in common cold;
relieve kidney and bladder stones, shrink hemorrhoids and relieve
painful urination and hemorrhoids. It is claimed that eating the fruit
reduces blood sugar levels in diabetics. In Chinese medicine, they are
used as a diuretic. WARNING: persons in dialysis should take care when
eating star fruit as some cases of intoxication, insomnia and hiccups to
agitation, mental confusion and - in one case death - two people went
into renal (kidney) failure after eating star fruit . Both recovered
four weeks later after hemodialysis? Also do not eat on an empty stomach
or if in dehydrated state as the star fruit may pose an additional risk
for development of renal injury.
Star Fruit Salad
Ingredients
2 star fruit
2 kiwis
2 bananas
1 cup mango fruit nectar
1 cup low fat vanilla yogurt
Makes 4 servings.
Peel kiwi and banana, cut into medium size pieces. Slice star fruit into
?-inch thickness. Combine all fruits in bowl. Add nectar over mixture.
Refrigerate for 3 hours. Top with vanilla yogurt.
WARNING NOTE: Drinking the juice alone and unmixed with other
fruits or vegetables not recommended! Two people - age not given - are
reported to have developed nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and
backache within hours of ingesting large quantities of sour carambola
juice; then acute renal failure followed that required dialysis.
As I always say even healthy requires moderation!

Warning: The Drugs in Your
Toothpaste Can Affect Your Health
January 18, 2008
By Flora Stay, D.D.S.
One of the fastest ways to absorb anything into the body is
through the mouth. Drugs such as nitroglycerine for heart
conditions and natural homeopathic remedies are given under the
tongue for fast absorption. Your daily routine of brushing your
teeth with your favorite toothpaste may also be delivering a
daily dose of antibiotics or other potentially toxic
ingredients, without you realizing it.
Most people, even dentists and dental hygienists, don't realize
there is a warning on the back of most toothpastes (including
many from health food stores). The warning is mandated by the
FDA for active ingredients that are drug based. The most common
ones are fluoride, antibiotics and other drugs used to prevent
cavities, tartar or teeth sensitivity.
Even children's toothpaste has a warning to "keep out of reach
of children under the age of six. If more than used for brushing
is swallowed, contact the poison control center or your
physician". If a child under the age of six swallows half a tube
of the sparkly, bright colored toothpaste that tastes like
bubble gum and contains fluoride, the result could virtually be
deadly.
Besides fluoride and the potential for poisoning your child if
large amounts are swallowed, most toothpaste contain saccharin
and many other artificial additives. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)
is another ingredient to stay away from. Studies have reported
there's a potential for flare-ups of canker sores with SLS.
Instead of choosing one of these types of commercial toothpastes
for your child or you, providing your family with nutritious
meals and brushing with "common sense" toothpaste, without
potentially toxic ingredients, is much safer.
In recent years we've been hearing about the alarming increase
of superbugs such as methicillin-resistant Staphlycoccus aureas
(MRSA). The CDC and other studies list one cause for the rise of
these antibiotic resistant bacteria to the general overuse of
antibiotics. This overuse is not always in the form of a pill.
You may be absorbing a small amount of an antimicrobial drug
through your personal products as well.
Many brands of toothpastes, deodorants, shampoos, and soaps
contain antibiotics, antimicrobials and strong disinfecting
detergents. Triclosan, acetylpyridium chloride and tea tree oil
are commonly used ones. Although natural, tea tree oil is a
strong anti-fungal and antibiotic better suited for conditions
such as athlete's foot than in your moisturizer.
Antibiotics should only be prescribed if you have a serious
infection. Informed consumers make wise buying decisions that
aren't based on pretty packages. Read, research and choose
wisely for you and your family.

US Climate
Talks Must Focus on Emissions Curbs
January 30, 2008
OSLO - US-hosted climate talks in Hawaii this week need to focus
more on agreeing curbs to greenhouse gas emissions by major
polluters, the UN's top climate change official said on Tuesday.
The debate on limiting greenhouse gas emissions, which come
mainly from burning fossil fuels, needed "to move into a higher
gear" if the talks were to produce a plan this year, the United
Nations' Yvo de Boer said of the Jan. 30-31 meeting in Honolulu.
"The talks have got a quite broad agenda at the moment...I think
it would be useful if they can zero in quite quickly on limits
on emissions," de Boer told Reuters in a phone interview just
before leaving for the United States.
The Honolulu talks are the second in a series viewed with
suspicion by some US allies, who doubt President George W.
Bush's commitment to combating global warming.
Last year, in announcing meetings among the 16 biggest emitters,
Bush said participants would develop by the end of 2008 a
"long-term global goal to reduce greenhouse gases," including
"ambitious mid-term national targets".
Bush said the decisions would then feed into a global UN deal,
due to be concluded in Copenhagen in late 2009, to help slow
rising temperatures that could bring more floods, droughts,
rising seas and heatwaves.
Still, de Boer said it was hard for Bush, who will stand down on
Jan. 20 next year, to set a US carbon emissions goal now as
"there is a lot of legislation still moving through the Senate
and the Congress."
De Boer says the US meetings, which were also due to cover
issues such as technology and aid, could be useful -- even
though the United States is alone among industrial nations in
opposing caps on emissions to 2012 by the UN's Kyoto Protocol.
Bush argues that Kyoto wrongly excludes 2012 targets for
developing nations such as China and India and would damage the
US economy. The United States and China are the top emitters of
greenhouse gases.
The Hawaii talks are due to gather representatives from
Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany,
India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa and
South Korea. De Boer will represent the United Nations and the
European Union will also be represented.
In his annual State of the Union address on Monday, Bush
proposed investments of US$2 billion over the next three years
to a new international fund to promote clean energy technologies
and fight climate change in developing nations.
De Boer welcomed US funding steps, and a US$10 billion package
by Japan last week to help emerging countries tackle climate
change without jeopardising growth.
He said that they helped a need for a "Climate Change Marshall
Plan" to help developing nations. The original US Marshall plan
aided Europe's shattered economies after World War Two. "We need
something similar on climate," de Boer said.
