Something To Think About
============================
Rethinking Hormones, Again
By RONI RABIN
Candace Talmadge was determined to get through menopause without using
hormones, and she tried just about every alternative treatment she could
find, like soy tablets, herbs and acupuncture, a chiropractor and even
an anti-anxiety medication.
Two months ago, Ms. Talmadge's doctor suggested that she consider
hormone therapy, and she relented.
"There are always risks to any medication you take, whether it's
traditional or nontraditional," said Ms. Talmadge, 51, an author from
Lancaster, Tex. "But I've been going through hell. I think my doctor's
attitude was, 'Do the benefits for you, right now, outweigh the risks?'
"
Three and a half years after a landmark study stunned physicians by
finding that hormone therapy had serious risks and did not prevent heart
disease in postmenopausal women, many women continue to turn to hormones
for relief. Many gynecologists continue to prescribe them as a
first-line therapy for severe menopausal symptoms.
Debates over the study's findings remain heated, with doctors divided
between those who believe in the power of hormone therapy to protect the
heart and relieve menopausal symptoms and those who think that any heart
benefits have been discredited.
Some researchers are testing a new theory, that hormone therapy is
beneficial for the heart when it is initiated early, during a narrow
"window of opportunity" around the time of menopause and before women
develop an excessive buildup of atherosclerotic plaque.
A chief criticism of the hormone study, part of the national Women's
Health Initiative, was that it included women much older than the
average hormone user, who typically initiates therapy around the time of
menopause. The average age of the participants in the study was 64. The
average age of menopause is 51.4, and some studies suggest that women
who initiate hormone therapy later may miss the chance to benefit from
the treatment.
This month, a paper in The Journal of Women's Health added credence to
that idea. It reported that women who started therapy soon after
menopause reduced the risk of coronary heart disease 30 percent, but
that the benefit appeared to diminish the longer women waited to
initiate treatment. The paper, based on data from the Nurses' Health
Study, the large observational trial that reported many years ago that
estrogen protected women's hearts, suggested that timing the therapy was
critical.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

Prostate cancer
can be as deadly a disease among men as breast cancer is among women.
And some of the risk factors for it may surprise you. The Department of
Community Medicine and General Practice at the Norwegian University of
Science and Technology studied the risk factors and found two unlikely
candidates, according to the British Journal of Cancer.
Divorced men have a higher risk than married men, and the risk of
prostate cancer is greater among men with higher socio-economic status,
larger incomes and more education can be dangerous to your health if you
don't take care.

TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Are you overly
concerned about your health?
Do you overly focus on your health?
Participation in relationships and participation in work that serves
a vision or a context larger than your own personal survival. Your
health and wellness are by-products of a life that is focused and ripe
with meaning, full of generous engagement with others in the creation of
a world that works for everybody. This insight is not new. Wise women
and men throughout the ages have demonstrated an elegant unconcern for
their own problems (physical or circumstantial) combined with a diligent
commitment to the wellbeing of others. Such an orientation results in an
observable radiance, a tangible strength of character and profound
wisdom, as well as a remarkable ability for compassion even in the
direst situations. Think of Mother Teresa. Think of the current Dalai
Lama. Think of someone whom you admire that works to help others.
When you are ill, illness tends to permeate your world, whether it is a
simple cold or a chronic condition. Having asthma or having arthritis
can easily become "being the woman with asthma" or "being the guy with
arthritis." And you may come to identify yourself with that illness. You
might use it, and abuse it, to judge yourself or to manipulate others.
Some folks believe that illness or disease is some form of punishment.
When they are sick, therefore, they feel guilty. They feel unloved and
unlovable. They compound an already aggravated situation with negativity
and self-judgment. To align with a bigger context of health means
refusing to use illness or disease in this way.
People in Western industrialized nations have a great luxury of time and
money to devote to personal health. But it may be beneficial to ask
whether these populations are truly healthier and happier than other
cultures as a result. Are we really well in body, mind, and spirit?

FOOD OF THE
WEEK

That Juicy bit of fruit!
When in Hawaii this particular fruit found its way into my plate on many
occassions and I truly loved finding it there... Something that I had
not eaten until about ten years when friends from Belez introduced me to
them and since that time I eat them as often as possible...
Mango grow at the end of a long, stringlike stem, with sometimes two or
more fruits to a stem. The fruits are 2 to 9 inches long and may be
kidney shaped, ovate or rarely but sometimes round. They range in size
from 8 ounces to around 24 ounces. The leathery skin is waxy and smooth,
and when ripe entirely pale green or yellow marked with red. It is
inedible and contains a sap that is irritating to some people. The
quality of the fruit is based on the scarcity of fiber and minimal
turpentine taste. Mango is regarded as the queen of fruits in tropical
areas of the world.
The flesh of a mango is peachlike and juicy, with more or less numerous
fibers radiating from the husk of the single large kidney-shaped seed.
Fibers are more pronounced in fruits grown with hard water and chemical
fertilizers. The flavor is pleasant and rich and high in sugars and
acid.

The Mango tree plays a sacred role in India; it is a symbol of love and
some believe that the Mango tree can grant wishes. It is also the
world's largest producer of mangoes. It has been estimated that there
are over 1000 commercial varieties in India, where mangos are often
called the "king of fruits".
Florida is the main producer of mangos in the United States. In 1990,
2800 acres of mangos were planted in Florida, of which 2500 acres were
harvested. The farm value of the 19.2 million pounds produced was $4.7
million. Mangos are also produced in Hawaii and Southern California.
There are two principal types of mangos: Indian and Indochinese. ...
Within those two type are; ‘Ah Ping’, ‘Fairchild’, ‘Gouveia’, ‘Harders’,
‘Keitt’, ‘Momi K’, ‘Pope’, and ‘Rapoza’ are recommended mango varieties
for Hawaii. All the listed varieties are productive and have superior
quality fruit. They have less pronounced alternate-year bearing
qualities than the more common ‘Haden’ and ‘Pirie’ varieties. All these
varieties, including ‘Haden’ and ‘Pirie’, are monoembryonic and do not
come true from seed. Flowering occurs from December to April, but
offseason flowering is common, resulting in variable harvest times.
‘Fairchild’ is considered somewhat resistant to anthracnose and is
favored for humid areas.
Mango can be eaten raw as a dessert fruit or processed to various
products. Ripe fruits can be sliced and canned or processed to juice,
jams, jellies, nectars and preserves. Eastern and Asian cultures use
unripe mangos for pickles, chutney and relishes. In India, unripe mangos
are sliced, dried, and made into powder for amchoor, a traditional
Indian preparation used for cooking. In India, flour is made from mango
seeds. Seeds are also eaten during periods of food shortages. The timber
is used for boats, flooring, furniture and other applications.
My favorite way of eating them is fresh and raw...

Drug Danger
To Your Child(ren) In The Home?
No, it's not street drugs!!! According to a new CDC report,
unintentional access to pharmaceutical drugs (whether
prescription or over-the-counter) accounted for more than 1.3
million incidents of accidental chemical or substance exposure
in 2003 alone.
More than 42 percent of those exposures involved children under
age 6, based on reports from poison control centers.
More Than 50,000
An analysis of exposures from 2001-03 data collected via
hospital emergency departments found more than 50,000 children
were treated annually for accidental exposure to medications. 72
percent of these cases involved kids between ages 1 and 2.
Pill Boxes or Purses
One common reason is that many parents remove the medications
from the child-proof containers; instead, they are left in
accessible areas such as pill boxes or purses.

Dockworkers' Union Calls for
Cleaner Air at Seaports
RANDAL C. ARCHIBOLD
LONG BEACH, Calif., Jan. 30 - The effort to reduce smog stemming from
seaports, among the biggest polluters in the nation, gained an ally on
Monday when the union representing thousands of West Coast dockworkers
promised to help significantly reduce toxic emissions.
Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa of Los Angeles, at lectern, vowed Monday
to work to reduce pollution at seaports.
The union, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, representing
60,000 dockworkers from San Diego to Seattle, called for a one-fifth
reduction in emissions by 2010 and said it would push carriers to adopt
less-polluting technology on their ships.
The announcement, at a conference here of state and local officials
examining the problem, reflected a growing concern that the sharp
increase in shipping on the West Coast, fueled by the boom in Asian
imports in the past decade, has come at a heavy cost.
About 40 percent of the nation's cargo passes through ports here and in
Los Angeles next door, which combined are the busiest in the country.
Several recent studies have linked port pollution - chiefly from diesel
fumes given off by the ships and the trucks and trains carrying goods to
and from them - with smog, cancer, asthma and other health problems in
nearby communities.
While the Los Angeles region's air has become cleaner in the past three
decades, air quality regulators have identified the ports as the biggest
contributors of particulate matter, a major ingredient in smog.
"The thousands of men and women I represent and work for raise their
families under the cloud of port pollution," said Jim Spinosa, president
of the union, which, he added, will reach out to locals across the
country for support. "They have made a simple demand of their union.
While they want to earn a good living, they do not want to pay with
their lives for a stronger economy."
Mr. Spinosa said the union would work with carriers and port authorities
to meet its goal, but he did not rule out making it part of negotiations
during the next contract talks, in 2008. In 2002, employers locked out
dockworkers for 10 days during bitter contract negotiations, costing the
American economy billions of dollars in lost trade.
Concerns about pollution have been raised around ports in the San
Francisco Bay Area and in Seattle, which have also benefited from
growing imports of Far East goods, mostly electronics and clothing. In a
2004 report, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Clean Air
Coalition called seaports "the largest and most poorly regulated sources
of urban pollution in the country."
Environmentalists have accused port officials of being slow to respond
to the problem out of fear that stringent pollution control measures
would encourage carriers to take their business to other ports.
Melissa Lin Perrella, a lawyer with the Natural Resources Defense
Council, which has successfully sued Los Angeles to put in some
pollution control measures, cheered the union's move as critical to
bringing public pressure to bear and developing a unified attack on the
problem.
"It is huge," she said. "It really shows that green isn't just good for
our health but also good for business. Union workers on the front lines
breathe in toxic fumes and often live in the community around the
ports."
Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa of Los Angeles vowed to use the city's
Board of Harbor Commissioners, which oversees the port, to speed up
environmental efforts, though he remained committed to increasing
business, too. He called for expanded use of measures like cleaner fuels
for dockside tractors and "cold ironing," in which docked ships plug
into city power instead of idling their engines for electricity.
"We are a bellwether city, a bellwether region, and we are going to show
people we are going to grow this port but grow it greener," Mr.
Villaraigosa said.
Jim McKenna, the president and chief executive of the Pacific Maritime
Association, which represents carriers and terminal companies, said the
group had been talking with port and government officials for the past
year about plans to reduce emissions.
Though he declined to embrace the union's goal - "I can't tell you if
that's a good number or a bad number" - he said his group recognized the
pollution concerns, as well as ports' fears of slowing down growth. His
group has traditionally scoffed at measures pushed by environmentalists
like fees on containers coming off ships to pay for pollution control.
"Reducing emissions and expanding the ports' capacity are connected, and
both are a priority of our industries," he said.
