Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health

The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen

Something To Think About
============================
How crazy is this?
Recently, while browsing
through online articles, I came across this headline: "Antidepressant
May Help Treat Hot Flashes." I thought: Can this be as bad as it looks?
Answer: Yes it can.
The article features comments from an OB/BYN at a prominent Baltimore
hospital who notes that research shows paroxitine (Paxil's generic name)
may relieve hot flashes. She also states that hormone replacement
therapy (HRT) carries risks for some women, so paroxitine is "a great
option for them."
Well, that would depend on what your definition of "great" is. Would you
say that using a powerful antidepressant to address one and only one
symptom of menopause qualifies as "great"?
The research that the doctor refers to is probably a 2003 study that
appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers
randomly selected a group of 165 menopausal women who experienced hot
flashes and who were not taking a hormone replacement therapy. Roughly
one-third of the group received 25 mg of Paxil daily, one-third received
12.5 mg daily, and one-third received a placebo. The frequency and
severity of hot flashes were approximately reduced (on average) 65
percent in the first group, 62 percent in the second group, and 38
percent in the placebo group.
The researchers concluded that Paxil may be "an effective and
acceptable" therapy for treating hot flashes.
Going just by the numbers of this study, it appears that Paxil does
relieve hot flashes. So I'll give them "effective." But the word I have
trouble with is "acceptable." Because when you look at the wide variety
of problems that Paxil users have reported over the past decade, it
would be stretching the point considerably to call this drug acceptable.
But is there a chance that the researchers were unaware of the side
effects associated with Paxil use? No. No chance. Because three of the
four members of the research team are employees of GlaxoSmithKline, the
maker of Paxil.
Those howls of outrage you hear are coming from my office.
The web site for Paxil CR (controlled release) includes this list of the
drug's potential side effects: infection, nausea, diarrhea,
constipation, dizziness, sweating, tremor, sexual side effects,
weakness, insomnia, sleepiness and abnormal vision. Oh, and one more:
depression. That's right - the very thing that Paxil is designed to
relieve.
For those who try Paxil, experience a side effect and decide to stop
using the drug, there's yet another problem lying in wait.
Some patients report harsh side effects when they try to discontinue
Paxil use. According to a report in the British Medical Journal, in case
after case, patients coming off the drug experienced nightmares,
dizziness, burning and itching of the skin, agitation, sweating and
nausea. And for many of those patients, the only way to treat the side
effects was to begin taking Paxil again!
The FDA has issued a warning that withdrawal symptoms from Paxil may be
severe.
All of these problems associated with Paxil are fairly well known. So
outside of those who would like to sell us this drug, you have to wonder
how anyone could possibly characterize Paxil as an acceptable trade off
for hot flashes.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

According to the
American Heart Association, there is a direct link between gum disease
and hardening of the arteries and other coronary heart disease. That's
because chronic periodontal disease appears to set off an inflammatory
process that exacerbates and contributes to the build-up of plaque on
the artery walls.

Impotence drugs
linked to eye damage risk -study By Patricia Reaney
Jan 16, 2006
LONDON (Reuters) - Impotence drugs such as Viagra and Cialis can
increase the risk of eye damage in men who have a history of heart
disease or high blood pressure, researchers said on Tuesday.
In a small study, scientists at the University of Alabama in Birmingham
found that men who had suffered a heart attack were 10 times more likely
to have optic nerve damage if they had been taking leading
anti-impotence pills.
"For patients with a history of myocardial infarction (heart attack), we
did observe a strong and statistically significant association
suggestive of a link between the use of Viagra and/or Cialis and an
increased risk of NAION," Dr Gerald McGwin, who headed the study, said
in a report in the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
Non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION), is the most
common cause of acute optic nerve disease in people over 50 years old.
It can cause permanent loss of vision in one or both eyes.
Viagra, made by Pfizer Inc and Eli Lilly and Co's Cialis, are leading
impotence treatments.
McGwin and his team questioned 76 men, half of whom suffered from NAION,
who were treated at a specialist eye clinic in the United States, about
their smoking and drinking habits and use of anti-impotence pills.
The researchers found that men who had had a heart attack were 10 times
more likely to have optic nerve damage if they had taken the
anti-impotence drugs.
Tens of millions of men have used Viagra and Cialis since the treatments
were launched.
In May, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States said
it had received more than 40 reports of NAION involving impotence drugs
but had not determined whether the treatments were responsible.
Pfizer said a review of 103 Viagra clinical trials involving more than
13,000 patients found no reports of NAION. But the company has changed
the label on Viagra to note reports of
NAION.
"The labels have been updated," said a spokesman.
Eli Lilly has also changed its labels on Cialis. No one from the company
was immediately available to comment on the new research.
McGwin and his team said patients with heart disease or high blood
pressure should be warned about the elevated risk of NAION when taking
anti-impotence pills.
"Though NAION is a rare condition, the large number of men using Viagra
or Cialis suggests that, should an association truly exist, the
incidence of NAION could rise dramatically," McGwin added.

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Pa what?
The papaya has a reputation as the fruit of the angels given that
name by Christopher Columbus. Considered an exotic fruit, can now
be found in markets throughout the year. Although there is a bit of a
seasonal peak in early summer and fall, papaya trees produce fruit year
round.

Papaya Fruit, often called Paw Paw, Mamao, and
Tree Melon, grows on what is usually referred to as a tree.
But the Papaya plant is actually a large herb growing to heights of up
to thirty feet with a hollow green stem becoming up to a foot and a half
thick at the base. The leaves emerge directly from the upper part of the
stem in a spiral. Both the stem and leaves contain copious white milky
latex. Generally, the fruit is melon-like, oval to nearly round. The
skin is waxy and thin but fairly tough. When the fruit is green and hard
it is rich in white latex. As it ripens, it becomes yellow externally
and the thick wall of flesh becomes aromatic, yellow, orange or various
shades of red. It is then juicy, sweet and somewhat like cantaloupe in
flavor. Papaya's seeds are edible, although their peppery flavor
is somewhat bitter. The fruit, as well as the other parts of the papaya
tree, contain papain, an enzyme that helps digest proteins. This enzyme
is especially concentrated in the fruit when it is unripe. Papain is
extracted to make digestive enzyme dietary supplements.
Rutgers University study on fruits and their nutrient values found that
the Papaya came in second on their list. Is not on the list of 20 foods
that most frequently contain pesticide residue or in the allergy realm
of foods.
It contains; Vitamin C, folate, dietary fiber, vitamins E, A, B2 & B5,
potassium, magnesium of which all are necessary to our health and beside
tasty and good the Papaya is very low in calories...
Since this isn't a fruit that is one of the popularly consumed fruits
thought I would give you some ideas of how to serve papaya... They can
be eaten as is, added to a fruit salad or to a host of different
recipes.
One of the easiest and most natural ways to eat papaya is; After washing
the fruit, cut it lengthwise, scoop out the seeds and then eat it with a
spoon. For a little extra zest, you can squeeze lemon or lime juice on
top. Very sweet and tasty!
To cut papaya into smaller pieces for fruit salad or recipes, first peel
it with a paring knife and then cut into desire size and shape. You can
also use a melon baller to scoop out the fruit of a halved papaya. If
you are adding it to a fruit salad, you should do so just before serving
as it tends to cause the other fruits to become very soft.
While most people discard the big black seeds, they are actually edible
and have a delightful peppery flavor. They can be chewed whole or
blended into a creamy salad dressing, giving it a peppery flavor.
Mix diced papaya, cilantro, jalapeno peppers and ginger together to make
a unique salsa that goes great with shrimp, scallops and halibut.
Sprinkle papaya with fresh lime juice and enjoy as is.
Slice a small papaya lengthwise and fill with fruit salad.
In a blender, combine papaya, strawberries and yogurt for a cold soup
treat.

Former science
chief: 'MMR fears coming true'
By SUE CORRIGAN,
Mail on Sunday
A former Government medical officer responsible for deciding
whether medicines are safe has accused the Government of
"utterly inexplicable complacency" over the MMR triple vaccine
for children.
Dr Peter Fletcher, who was Chief Scientific Officer at the
Department of Health, said if it is proven that the jab causes
autism, "the refusal by governments to evaluate the risks
properly will make this one of the greatest scandals in medical
history".
He added that after agreeing to be an expert witness on
drug-safety trials for parents' lawyers, he had received and
studied thousands of documents relating to the case which he
believed the public had a right to see.
He said he has seen a "steady accumulation of evidence" from
scientists worldwide that the measles, mumps and rubella jab is
causing brain damage in certain children.
But he added: "There are very powerful people in positions of
great authority in Britain and elsewhere who have staked their
reputations and careers on the safety of MMR and they are
willing to do almost anything to protect themselves."
His warning follows reports that the Government is this week
planning to announce the addition of a jab against pneumococcal
meningitis for babies, probably from next April. It is also
considering flu jabs for under-twos - not to protect the
children, but adults they may infect.
In the late Seventies, Dr Fletcher served as Chief Scientific
Officer at the DoH and Medical Assessor to the Committee on
Safety of Medicines, meaning he was responsible for deciding if
new vaccines were safe.
He first expressed concerns about MMR in 2001, saying safety
trials before the vaccine's introduction in Britain were
inadequate.
Now he says the theoretical fears he raised appear to be
becoming reality.
He said the rising tide of autism cases and growing scientific
understanding of autism-related bowel disease have convinced him
the MMR vaccine may be to blame.
"Clinical and scientific data is steadily accumulating that the
live measles virus in MMR can cause brain, gut and immune system
damage in a subset of vulnerable children," he said. "There's no
one conclusive piece of scientific evidence, no 'smoking gun',
because there very rarely is when adverse drug reactions are
first suspected. When vaccine damage in very young children is
involved, it is harder to prove the links.
"But it is the steady accumulation of evidence, from a number of
respected universities, teaching hospitals and laboratories
around the world, that matters here. There's far too much to
ignore. Yet government health authorities are, it seems, more
than happy to do so."
'Why isn't the Government taking this massive public health
problem more seriously?'
Dr Fletcher said he found "this official complacency utterly
inexplicable" in the light of an explosive worldwide increase in
regressive autism and inflammatory bowel disease in children,
which was first linked to the live measles virus in the MMR jab
by clinical researcher Dr Andrew Wakefield in 1998.
"When scientists first raised fears of a possible link between
mad cow disease and an apparently new, variant form of CJD they
had detected in just 20 or 30 patients, everybody panicked and
millions of cows were slaughtered," said Dr Fletcher.
"Yet there has been a tenfold increase in autism and related
forms of brain damage over the past 15 years, roughly coinciding
with MMR's introduction, and an extremely worrying increase in
childhood inflammatory bowel diseases and immune disorders such
as diabetes, and no one in authority will even admit it's
happening, let alone try to investigate the causes."
He said there was "no way" the tenfold leap in autistic children
could be the result of better recognition and definitional
changes, as claimed by health authorities.
"It is highly likely that at least part of this increase is a
vaccinerelated problem." he said. "But whatever it is, why isn't
the Government taking this massive public health problem more
seriously?"
His outspokenness will infuriate health authorities, who have
spent millions of pounds shoring up confidence in MMR since Dr
Wakefield's 1998 statement.
But Dr Fletcher said the Government is undermining public
confidence in vaccine safety by refusing to do in-depth clinical
research to rule out fears of MMR damage to children.
He added that the risks of brain and gut damage from MMR
injections seem to be much higher in children where a brother or
sister has diabetes, an immune disorder.
"That is a very strong clinical signal that some children are
immunologically at risk from MMR," he said. "Why is the
Government not investigating it further - diverting some of the
millions of pounds spent on advertising and PR campaigns to
promote MMR uptake into detailed clinical research instead?"
Now retired after a distinguished 40-year career in science and
medicine in Britain, Europe and the US, Dr Fletcher said that
without such research, health authorities could not possibly
rule out fears about MMR.
He said: "It is entirely possible that the immune systems of a
small minority simply cannot cope with the challenge of the
three live viruses in the MMR jab, and the ever-increasing
vaccine load in general."
He said he had decided to speak out because of his deep concern
at the lack of treatment for autistic children with bowel
disease, as revealed in The Mail on Sunday two weeks ago.
He called the sudden termination of legal aid to parents of
allegedly vaccine-damaged children in late 2003 "a monstrous
injustice". After agreeing to be a witness for the parents, he
received thousands of documents relating to the case.
"Now, it seems, unless the parents force the Government to
restore legal aid, much of this revealing evidence may never
come out," he said.
The Department of Health said: "MMR remains the best protection
against measles, mumps and rubella. It is recognised by the
World Health Organisation as having an outstanding safety record
and there is a wealth of evidence showing children who receive
the MMR vaccine are no more at risk of autism than those who
don't."

Tobacco Foes See an Opening
- Secondhand smoke's designation as a toxic contaminant gives
politicians and activists extra ammunition for more restrictions.
By Janet Wilson, LA Times
Staff Writer
Paul Scott recalls sitting trapped in the back of his family's station
wagon as a boy in the 1960s, his parents chain-smoking up front.
"The smoke would be thick in there; you just couldn't get away from it -
the stench most of all," said Scott, 53, of Santa Monica. "It gave me
headaches. I remember looking outside and wishing I could breathe that
air instead."
Scott has never smoked. But in 2002, he was diagnosed with bladder
cancer. The likely cause, his doctors told him, was the secondhand smoke
he breathed throughout childhood.
California air regulators have recently classified this drifting
byproduct of cigarettes as a toxic contaminant that can kill or harm
bystanders, especially children, a designation that is a first for any
government.
"If my parents had known, they never would have done it," Scott said.
The Air Resources Board has three years to enact any additional
regulations needed to protect the public from secondhand smoke, a task
the board's spokesman said could be difficult because of the state's
already stringent anti-smoking laws. But the designation has already
given a boost to local governments and private entities working to
restrict smoking.
Last week the Calabasas City Council unanimously passed an ordinance
banning smoking in outdoor spaces when other people are in the area.
Calabasas officials had been "feeling the heat" from smokers who opposed
the proposed law, said Mayor Barry Groveman. But the state's
"extraordinary" action Jan. 26 silenced the critics.
"There is a clean-air god, and he or she smiled on Calabasas," Groveman
said. "I'm going to call on all my fellow mayors to do the same thing.
Now that California has taken this step, why should people have to wait
two or three years when cities can do it so much more quickly?"
The designation in California, which leads the way nationally in
anti-smoking laws, will substantially change how the public perceives
the risk of secondhand smoke "and create a very major demand to do
something about it," said Stanton Glantz, a UC San Francisco professor
of medicine who served on a scientific panel that unanimously
recommended the air board take action.
"Two things at the top of everybody's list are dealing with smoke in
cars and dealing with drift of smoke from one apartment or condo to
another," Glantz said. "This is going to speed the solution to those
problems. Exactly how, I don't know, but I'm quite confident it will
happen."
Some anti-smoking activists have an ambitious list.
"Doorways, bus stops, outdoor waiting lines of any kind, also the ATM:
They should all be nonsmoking," said Esther Schiller, director of
Smokefree Air for Everyone, a Granada Hills nonprofit, noting that the
Centers for Disease Control suggests that people with heart disease,
cancer or asthma avoid places with smoke.
Dozens of California cities already have laws limiting or prohibiting
smoking at beaches, piers or parks.
Public health advocates have also set their sights on Native
American-owned casinos, since state scientists concluded for the first
time that secondhand smoke causes breast cancer in pre-menopausal women.
"Bartenders, waitresses and card dealers are all at risk," said Theresa
Boscher, co-director of Resources and Education Supporting People
Everywhere Controlling Tobacco, a Sacramento nonprofit group launching a
campaign to persuade tribal leaders to ban smoking in their 50-plus
casinos. She said that although Indian nations did not have to abide by
state or local laws, "the state's action gives us an entree to talk to
them."
A spokeswoman for Pechanga Casino and Resort said they had set aside
one-sixth of their 180,000-square-foot gaming floor for nonsmokers and
that fresh air was pumped into the casino every three minutes.
The voluminous report by California EPA and Air Resources Board staff
found that an estimated 4,700 Californians died annually from illnesses
caused by secondhand smoke, including heart disease, cancers and sudden
infant death syndrome. Thousands more children suffer asthma attacks and
other problems.
About 16% of Californians smoke, down from previous years and far less
than other areas of the country. But 56% of adults and 64% of
adolescents are exposed to secondhand smoke. The highest exposure - 10
times greater than elsewhere - is in cars.
Tobacco companies that objected in written comments before the air
board's decision last week either did not return calls or declined to
comment on the likelihood of new tougher state laws.
