Something To Think About
============================
Don't be a victim of
fear tactics and false diagnoses.
Learn the truth about cancer screening so you'll
feel more in control and more confident about your healthcare decisions.
MYTH: "Early Detection Can Help You Avoid Drastic Treatments"
FACT: Neither mammograms nor PSA tests can accurately identify
which cancers are lethal, so too many doctors still tend to respond to
any sign of cancer with biopsies, drugs, surgery and toxic treatments
like chemo and radiation.
MYTH: "Mammograms and PSA Tests Are Safe to Your Body"
FACT: Your annual mammograms expose you to ionizing radiation -
the only KNOWN BREAST CANCER CARCINOGEN. And for men? Your PSA blood
test is simple enough, but it has a high rate of false positives,
leading to painful prostate biopsies with a high risk of infection and
even unnecessary life-threatening surgery.
MYTH: "Mammograms or PSA Tests will Protect You from Cancer"
FACT: The call for mass screenings was based on the theory that
early detection saves lives. But studies can't prove that these tests
are causing a decline in cancer death rates.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================
Prilosec
and Nexium are technically known as a proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
These are the most potent of the acid-suppressing drugs. They work by
blocking the action of the body's proton pump, which secretes stomach
acid.
There are lots of serious concerns associated with the use of PPIs. The
most common adverse effects include diarrhea, skin reactions, and
headaches. Other possible side effects include impotence, breast
enlargement, and gout. And those are just the problems that can occur
relatively quickly when you're taking these drugs. The potential
consequences of long-term acid suppression with PPIs include asthma,
allergies, skin disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, insomnia, osteoporosis,
gastrointestinal infection, depression, and many, many more.
And on top of all of that, these drugs disrupt the body's natural
digestive process and cause profound changes in the internal environment
of the stomach and intestines. Decades of research have demonstrated
that chronically low levels of stomach acid can be harmful in the long
run, causing poor digestion, which leads to inefficient absorption of
nutrients from food, which leads to malnutrition.
The truth is, most people suffering from heartburn aren't producing too
much acid. Actually, even a small amount of acid in the wrong place
(such as the esophagus) can cause symptoms and, ultimately, tissue
damage. And, as surprising as it sounds, for many people with heartburn,
the best treatment may actually be more acid, not less.

HARMFUL PESTICIDES FOUND IN EVERYDAY FOOD
PRODUCTS
By Andrew Schneider
Government promises to rid the nation's food supply of brain-damaging pesticides
aren't doing the job, according to the results of a yearlong study that
carefully monitored the diets of a group of local children.
The peer-reviewed study found that the urine and saliva of children eating a
variety of conventional foods from area groceries contained biological markers
of organophosphates, the family of pesticides spawned by the creation of nerve
gas agents in World War II.
When the same children ate organic fruits, vegetables and juices, signs of
pesticides were not found.
"The transformation is extremely rapid," said Chensheng Lu, the principal author
of the study published online in the current issue of Environmental Health
Perspectives.
"Once you switch from conventional food to organic, the pesticides (malathion
and chlorpyrifos) that we can measure in the urine disappears. The level returns
immediately when you go back to the conventional diets," said Lu, a professor at
Emory University's School of Public Health and a leading authority on pesticides
and children.
Within eight to 36 hours of the children switching to organic food, the
pesticides were no longer detected in the testing.
The subjects for his testing were 21 children, ages 3 to 11, from two elementary
schools and a Montessori preschool on Mercer Island.
The community has double the median national income, but the wealth of Mercer
Island made no difference in the outcome, he said.
"We are confident that if we did the same study in poor communities, we would
get the same results," he said. The study is being repeated in Georgia.
The study has not yet linked the pesticide levels to specific foods, but other
studies have shown peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, nectarines, strawberries
and cherries are among those that most frequently have detectable levels of
pesticides.
Measuring the harm
Lu is quick to point out that there is no certainty that the pesticides measured
in this group of children would cause any adverse health outcomes. However, he
added that a recent animal study demonstrated that persistent cognitive
impairment occurred in rats after chronic dietary exposure to chlorpyrifos.
Death or serious health problems have been documented in thousands of cases in
which there were high-level exposures to malathion and chlorpyrifos. But a link
between neurological impairments and repeated low-level exposure is far more
difficult to determine.
"There's a large underpinning of animal research for organophosphate pesticides,
and particularly for chlorpyrifos, that points to bad outcomes in terms of
effects on brain development and behavior," Dr. Theodore Slotkin, a professor of
pharmacology and cancer biology at Duke University in North Carolina, said in
the April 2006 Environmental Health Perspectives.
Lu says more research must be done into the harm these pesticides may do to
children, even at the low levels found on food.
"In animal and a few human studies, we know chlorpyrifos inhibits an enzyme that
transmits a signal in the brain so the body can function properly.
Unfortunately, that's all we know."
Not many chemicals, including pharmaceutical products, were designed
specifically to kill mammals, which was genesis of organophosphates.
"It is appropriate to assume that if we -- human beings -- are exposed to (this
class of) pesticides, even though it's a low-level exposure on a daily basis,
there are going to be some health concerns down the road," said Lu, who is on
the Environmental Protection Agency's pesticide advisory panel.
The EPA says it eliminated the use of organophosphates on many crops and imposed
numerous restrictions on the remaining organophosphate pesticide uses.
Congressional concern that children were being harmed by excessive exposure to
pesticides led to the unanimous passage of the Food Quality Protection Act. At
its heart was a requirement that by 2006, the EPA complete a comprehensive
reassessment of the 9,721 pesticides permitted for use and determine the safe
level of pesticide residues permitted for all food products.
"As a result, the amount of these pesticides used on kids' foods (has undergone)
a 57 percent reduction," said Jonathan Shradar, the EPA's spokesman.
But that's not nearly enough to prevent birth defects and neurological problems,
said Chuck Benbrook, chief scientist of the Organic Center, a nationwide,
nonprofit, food research organization.
"The pesticide limits that EPA permits are far, far too high to say they're
safe. And, the reduction that EPA cites in the U.S. has been accompanied by a
steady increase in pesticide-contaminated imported foods, which are capturing a
growing share of the market," he said.
Yet the EPA continues to insist that "dietary exposures from eating food crops
treated with chlorpyrifos are below the level of concern for the entire U.S.
population, including infants and children."
That statement is "not supported by science," Benbrook said.
"Given the almost daily reminders that children are suffering from an array of
behavioral, learning, neurological problems, doesn't it make sense to eliminate
exposures to chemicals known to trigger such outcomes like chlorpyrifos?" he
asked.
What to do
While the gut reaction of some parents might be to limit the consumption of
fresh produce or switch completely to organic food, Lu cautions not to make the
wrong decision.
"It is vital for children to consume significantly more fresh fruits and
vegetables than is commonly the case today," he says, citing such problems as
juvenile diabetes and obesity.
"Nor is our purpose to promote the consumption of organic food, although our
data clearly demonstrate that food grown organically contains far less pesticide
residues."
Lu says an all-organic diet is not necessary. He has two sons, 10 and 13, and he
estimates that about 60 percent of his family's diet is organic.
"Consumers," he says, "should be encouraged to buy produce direct from the
farmers they know. These need not be just organic farmers, but conventional
growers who minimize their use of pesticides."
Understanding how fruits and vegetables grow can help guide the consumer, he
says.
For example, organic strawberries probably are worth the money because they are
a tender-fleshed fruit grown close to the dirt, so more pesticides are needed to
fight insects and bugs from the soil. He adds apples and spinach to his list.
"It may also be money-smart to choose conventionally grown broccoli because it
has a web of leaves surrounding the florets, resulting in lower levels of
pesticide residue," Lu says.
He is greatly concerned about one finding from the study.
"Overall pesticide (marker) levels in urine samples were even higher in the
winter months, suggesting children may have consumed fruits and vegetables that
are imported. The government needs to ensure that imported food comply with the
standards we impose on domestic produce," he said.
Dangerous science
Chlorpyrifos, made by Dow Chemical Co., is one of the most widely used
organophosphate insecticides in the United States and, many believe, the world.
For years, millions of pounds of the chemical insecticide were used in schools,
homes, day care centers and public housing, and studies show that children were
often exposed to enormously high doses. Just as the EPA was ready to ban the
product, which analysts said would have damaged Dow's overseas sales, the
company "voluntarily" removed it from the home market. Yet, with few exceptions,
the agricultural uses continued.
The EPA's Web site is a study in contradictions when it comes to chlorpyrifos.
At one section, it "acknowledged the special susceptibility and sensitivity of
children to developmental and neurological effects from exposure to
chlorpyrifos."
But in another section, the agency reports that infants and children face no
risk from eating food crops treated with chlorpyrifos. However, the agency
doesn't say how it reached that conclusion. There is no agreement of how much of
the neurotoxin is too much.
Benbrook said the EPA has refused orders from Congress to study the cumulative
developmental risk to children from low-dose exposures.
"Perhaps we can rest assured that EPA has protected us adults from acute
insecticide poisoning risk, but our kids are on their own," Benbrook said.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
'A Natural Superfood'
Originated in Europe and Russia. A hardy perennial found
in abundance near springs and open running waterways, of a creeping
habit with smooth, shining, brownish-green, oval leaves and heart-shaped
leaflets. Flowers small and white, produced towards the extremity of the
branches signal the end of its season. The true nasturtium or Indian
Cress cultivated in gardens as a creeper has brilliant orange-red
flowers and produces the seeds which can substitute for capers in
pickles. Most common modern day name is Watercress!![[]](clip_image002.jpg)
Take care with wild picking! The poisonous Marshwort or 'Fool's Cress'
is often mistaken for Watercress, with which it is sometimes found
growing. It may readily be distinguished by its hemlock-like white
flowers, and when out of flower, by its finely toothed and somewhat
pointed leaves, much longer than those of the watercress and of a paler
green. The Latin name 'Nasturtium' is derived from the words nasus
tortus (a convulsed nose) on account of its pungency.
Watercress, like other kinds of cress, has a peppery, slightly metallic
taste, and can often be found mixed with spinach and rocket leaves in
salad bags. Watercress is a dark green leaf of the mustard family
commonly used in salads and soups, and is widely acknowledged to be a 'superfood'
with high levels of nutrients, minerals and health-protecting compounds.
Used in a lots of detoxing diets.
Watercress is rich in Vitamins A and C, iron, iodine and phosphorus. It
can be used in the treatment of: skin problems, bronchitis, winter colds
or flu, liver or kidney fatigue, sinusitis... Watercress has been used
as part of a holistic response to cancer of the lungs, larynx,
esophagus, prostate, bladder, uterus, stomach and intestines.
Eating watercress daily can significantly reduce DNA damage to blood
cells, which is considered to be an important trigger in the development
of cancer, scientists have revealed. The research, carried out by the
University of Ulster, Coleraine, and published in February's American
Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that in addition to reducing
DNA damage, a sensible daily portion of watercress also increased the
ability of those cells to resist further DNA damage caused by free
radicals.
As in anything else you ingest overdoing may be dangerous to the body;
Could cause cystitis in some people with a tendancy to have frequent
UTI's (urinary tract infections) and its medicinal use is not
advised for those who have a delicate stomach or suffer from acidosis or
heartburn. Excessive or prolonged use can lead to kidney problems. The
operative being excessive prolonged? Some doctors advise against its use
during pregnancy.
Unusual but effective for anorexia in the ill; Watercress is
particularly valuable for its antiscorbutic qualities and has been used
as such from the earliest times. As a salad it promotes appetite.
Culpepper says that the leaves bruised or the juice will free the face
from blotches, spots and blemishes, when applied as a lotion.
![[]](clip_image004.jpg)
I recommend lightly cooking watercress, or mixing it into soups for
those who do not like the slightly metallic taste. Wash very, very
thoroughly if you want to add it to salads. It's somewhat bitter at
certain times of the year, but it adds a wonderful crispness when eaten
raw. Chock full of Vitamin A and many other important nutrients,
watercress is among the top five healthiest plants to eat. Any plant
with such a dark green chlorophyll base is bound to be super nutritious.
Here is a very popular and effective detoxing recipe!
HIGH-CALCIUM RICH SOUP.
*2 Quarts soy milk.
*1 Standard package of watercress or one large bunch.
*1 Large red potato with skin.
*3 Small chopped shallot onions.
*1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil.
*6 Vegetarian bouillon cubes.
*1 Clove garlic, crushed.
--Mince and sauté the shallots in the olive oil in a large pot to
caramelize.
--Add soy milk and bring to simmer, light boil.
--Slice the potato and course chop the greens.
--Add the bouillon cubes.
--Add potato and watercress, simmer for 15 minutes.
--Puree the mixture through a food processor or blender.
--Add sea salt, pepper and Bragg's Liquid Aminos to taste.
Besides being high in calcium, vitamin C and antioxidant Beta-carotene,
it contains vitamin E and is a natural antibiotic, so very effective
soup for the infirmed?
In some areas finding watercress in the winter can be daunting if
not impossible? Kale or Collards can be substituted and will work better
if you mix both?
Enjoy this tantalizing healthy food!

Prof gains
worm's-eye view of environment
Jan 31, 2008 - Knight Ridder Tribune Business
News
By Gayle Perez
Jan. 31--A Colorado State University-Pueblo chemistry
professor's chance encounter with an earthworm has led to years
of research on just what these wiggling creatures end up
consuming.
What assistant professor Chad Kinney has discovered is that
biosolids that end up in soil, will in turn end up in the
earthworms that feed on that soil. Kinney's more than three
years of research has dug up earthworms containing compounds
found in everything from detergent and household cleaners to
prescription drugs. "We now know that earthworms are
cumulative," Kinney said. "As a bioaccumulative, they have a
higher concentration of the contaminants than the soil." Some of
the findings in Kinney's research are featured in a short
article in the February-March issue of Organic Gardening
Magazine.
Kinney also will have a paper on the ongoing research published
in the upcoming Environmental Science and Technology magazine, a
journal of the American Chemical Society. Kinney's research on
the transfer of contaminants in waste products to earthworms
began while he was doing post-doctoral work with the U.S.
Geological Survey's National Water Quality Lab in Denver. As
part of his research on measuring the contaminants in biosolids,
Kinney dug up an earthworm in the soil he was studying. He
decided to test the worm to see how much of the contaminants
could be found in the tiny creature. "We found that there were
pharmaceuticals in the earthworm," he said.
"We decided to look at earthworms in source material to see if
they contain measurable amounts of compounds." Kinney said
earthworms were the chosen species for the study because they
can be found everywhere across the country. "They also are at
the bottom of the food chain which makes them great to look at
as a starting point," Kinney said. Kinney, who is in his first
year teaching at CSU-Pueblo, said he joined a group of
researchers in examining the effects that biosolids have on
earthworms. They collected worms from three different
agricultural sites -- a soybean field containing human or
livestock waste, a soybean field containing biosolids from a
municipal wastewater treatment plant and a cornfield containing
swine manure.
Concentrations in the worms' tissues ranged from 100 to more
than 1,000 parts per billion. At those levels, Kinney said
researchers want to know the effect that can have on the
earthworms as well as to the food chain and the soil in which
the worms thrive. "We've raised more questions that will need
answers," Kinney said. Kinney said although the compound levels
may not be lethal, he said they could have an effect on the soil
or other sources further up the food chain. "We're hoping to see
biologists and ecologists get involved who have the expertise to
look further up the food chain and into the effects that
compounds may have on the earthworms," he said.
As far as his research, Kinney said he plans to look at "other
avenues in the environment where compounds may reside." Kinney
said although the research findings would prompt individuals to
begin pointing a finger at the waste-water industry for allowing
the contaminants to seep into the ground, he said the problem
originates with consumers. "Everyone contributes to this from
the pharmaceuticals we excrete from our bodies to flushing our
old prescription medication down the toilet to even washing our
hands," he said. "It's something we all contribute to whether we
know it or not."

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~~^~^~^
Toxin From
Fish Causes Illness in Humans
Feb 5, 2008
WASHINGTON (AP) - Several outbreaks of ciguatera fish poisoning
have been confirmed in consumers who ate fish harvested in the
northern Gulf of Mexico, the Food and Drug Administration said
Tuesday.
The FDA said that fish such as grouper, snapper, amberjack and
barracuda represent the most significant threat to consumers.
They feed on fish that have eaten toxic marine algae. The toxin
is stable in the tissue of living fish and does them no harm.
But larger carnivores have higher concentrations of the toxin in
their tissues. As a result, the greatest risk of poisoning for
humans comes from the largest fish.
Symptoms of ciguatera poisoning include nausea, vomiting,
vertigo and joint pain. In the most serious cases, neurological
problems can last for months or even years. Several outbreaks of
the illness were confirmed in Washington, D.C., and St. Louis,
the FDA said. Overall, there have been at least 28 reported
cases across the country, with the first case being reported in
late November.
The fish linked to the illnesses were harvested near the Flower
Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, an area of 56 square
miles in the northwestern Gulf. The FDA recommends that
processors not purchase fish harvested near the sanctuary.
Ciguatera is common in fish living in tropical and subtropical
regions, including the Caribbean Sea, the South Pacific Ocean
and the Indian Ocean. But the FDA has considered it rare for
fish in the northern Gulf of Mexico to have the toxin.
The FDA warned processors to reassess their hazard control plans
as necessary, and that failure to take proper precautions may
cause products to be considered adulterated by the agency.
Consumers who think they may have ciguatera poisoning are
encouraged to report their symptoms and what fish they ate to a
doctor or local health department.
LENA'S COMMENT: Now you might
better understand why God gave us a list of foods we shouldn't eat
that has for the largest part been discarded as not valid anymore! Sadly the list stands
today and even more than in Jesus days on this earth! Scavenger
fish (part of that list above listed as not being fit to eat
today).
