Greetings and thank your for subscribing!
Middle of the week already!!!! Some days it
seems I just get up when the day is gone! Think that's called adulthood
or is it just me? If that's not enough shock to my system today; my
oldest son reaches his 46th birthday when it seems like only yesterday
the Navy Corpsmen at the Barstow Marine Base hospital put this
tiny 5lb. 4 oz bundle of independence into my arms, all red from being doused with antiseptic, as he
just had to enter this world weeks before he was supposed to and then
decided he couldn't wait for the doctor to get there to deliver him and
the poor corpsman had to catch this slippery little bundle half way
between the delivery table and the gurney as I was being shifted... I
told you he was independent therefore just didn't want to wait on
anyone's timetable and he still doesn't... Was it really 46 years ago
today?
A bit like his mother!
Enjoy the rest of the week and do what it takes
to be health and longevity!

Something To Think About
============================
Needle Biopsy Or Not?
The latest reports on needle biopsies certainly reopen a concern that
has troubled many observers for a long time. I myself raised these
concerns in my first book, The Cancer Industry (1980), quoting the 1974
ACS textbook cited above. I certainly respect Dr. Hansen's cautious and
scientific approach. It is true that the full clinical significance of
these lymph node metastases is not known (that is, how many of them
would go on to develop into full-blown metastatic cancers, and how many
would remain dormant in the local lymph nodes).
What is more certain, however, is the devastating effect that the
development of such metastases has on the patients involved. First,
instead of being told that they have a tumor that is almost certain to
be cured by localized treatment (surgery with or without adjuvant
radiation), they learn instead that the cancer has now escaped out of a
confined area and has been seeded into another part of their body.
Second, they will almost certainly now be strongly urged to take highly
toxic combinations of chemotherapy with all its unpleasant and dangerous
side effects, a treatment that would not have been necessary had the
tumor remained confined to its site of origin.
Imagine the outrage these patients will feel when they learn that many
of these sentinel node metastases were caused not by the natural
progression of their disease but directly by the actions of
well-intentioned (but ill informed) doctors. Imagine, further, what will
happen when patients find out that questions have been raised about the
safety and advisability of needle biopsies for a number of years by some
of the finest minds in oncology. Imagine the disruption of the smooth
functioning of the "cancer industry" when patients start demanding less
invasive ways of diagnosing tumors. And imagine the class action
lawsuits.
I think it is because of nightmare scenarios like this that no one in
the medical community has yet come forward to draw the obvious
conclusions from this provocative study for the general public. Doctors
are silent. Politicians are unaware. And journalists, whom we look to as
a "fourth estate" in issues of public policy, are silent on this, as on
most of the really outrageous developments in the cancer field.
How else do we explain the fact that despite the impeccable credentials
of the John Wayne Cancer Institute team, and prominence of the journal
in question, this report has generally been ignored, as has the equally
disturbing report on liver metastases in the British Medical Journal.
Although Reuters did cover the John Wayne study at the time it was
published (June, 2004), a scant three months later I could find only a
handful of websites that still mentioned it, out of 82,000 that mention
needle biopsies in general.
Needle aspiration biopsy continues to be viewed as the gold standard of
diagnostic aids (Crabtree 2004). The whole notion that biopsies may
themselves spread cancer may be too hot to handle for most of the media
and the medical profession. It is one of those medical secrets that, it
seems, is best left unexplored.
NOTE: Readers will inevitably want to know what options are open to
patients who want to avoid needle biopsies. First of all, one should
fully explore imaging techniques such as CT, MRI, PET scans and
ultrasound. PET scans are particularly sensitive, and can often detect
minute metastases, even before they become clinically apparent. It
should be borne in mind, though, that such scans do subject the patient
to transient doses of radiation. Mammograms have become increasingly
accurate over the years, although there, too, questions have been raised
about the exposure to ionizing radiation involved, and there are also
legitimate concerns about the compression of the breast that accompanies
most such tests, which itself may on occasion be responsible for
dislodging clusters of cancer cells, thereby facilitating spread.
An innovative and non-toxic kind of diagnostic test is thermography,
which detects abnormal patterns of heat emanating from areas of high
metabolic activity. Although thermography has had its ups and downs, the
result of a four year, multi-center clinical trial, led by the
University of Southern California, was unambiguous: "Infrared imaging
offers a safe, noninvasive procedure that would be valuable as an
adjunct to mammography in determining whether a lesion is benign or
malignant." The sensitivity of the test in this study was an astonishing
99 percent (Perisky 2003).

Thought For The Day
=================
Before a child reaches the age of two, he/she will have received
32 vaccinations on this schedule - if the parents allow it -
including four doses each of vaccines for Hemophilus influenzae type b
infections, diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis -- all of them given
during the first 12 months of life. Seven vaccines injected into a
13-pound, two-month old infant are equivalent to 70 doses in a
130-pound adult.
The schedule states, "Your child can safely receive all vaccines
recommended for a particular age during one visit." Public health
officials, however, have not proven that it is indeed safe to inject
this many vaccines into infants. What's more, they cannot explain why,
concurrent with an increasing number of vaccinations, there has been an
explosion of neurologic and immune system disorders in our nation's
children.

'Shrimp Dip' Remains in Use Despite Deaths
Feb 6, 2005
BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - Shrimpers are still using a preservative known
as "shrimp dip" despite reports of deaths and injuries because they lack
a cost-effective alternative, a newspaper reported Sunday.
Shrimpers use the dip, called sodium metabisulfite, to prevent black
spots from forming on the shell and legs of shrimp harvested at sea.
As many as 400 freezer boats in the Gulf of Mexico use the preservative,
Harley Londrie of Zimco Marine told The Brownsville Herald. Londrie, who
sells sodium metabisulfite to local distributors, said the chemical is
safe if used properly.
The dip was blamed for 11 deaths and 32 injuries between 1970 and 1993,
U.S. Coast Guard records show.
A study by the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston says the
chemical can react under the proper conditions with water and acids from
the shrimp to produce deadly clouds of sulfur dioxide.
A shrimp boat crew member suffered permanent physical and brain damage
in July 2003 due to asphyxiation caused by sulfur dioxide, his family
members claim. Angel Romero Jr., of Port Isabel, has made modest
improvements but remains paralyzed, said his attorney, Ray Marchan.
The family sued the shrimp boat's owners and several chemical companies,
settling in the case in January for an undisclosed sum.
Shrimpers say they would welcome an affordable alternative to sodium
metabisulfite but are forced to continue using it to meet the market's
demand for attractive, high-quality shrimp.
Some shrimpers use another preservative named Everfresh, but others say
it's too expensive and did not work well on freezer boats. Sodium
metabisulfite sells for about $30 per 50-pound bag. A box of 16 packets
of Everfresh, weighing just more than seven pounds, sells for $160.
LENA'S COMMENT: Glad I don't eat shellfish! If you do you might

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
The Really Healthy Disease Proofing Vegetable!
If you've read all the "Food Of The Week" columns you can see how fruits
and vegetables are disease fighters extraordinaire!
I advocate eating at least 50% to 60% of your foods
as raw fruits and vegetables daily to get the maximum nutritional value
out of them.
When it comes to nutritional value, broccoli is at the top of the list.
It is rich in vitamins, high in fiber, low in calories and contains as
much calcium as milk and much healthier. By including broccoli regularly
in your diet you can reduce and prevent ailments like cancer, diabetes,
osteoporosis and heart disease.
Want to know how to beat prostate cancer? Your physician will probably
tell you to take prescription drugs. That's the pharmaceutical industry
trained doctor's answer who doesn't know better! For a dual killer of
those nasty illnesses mix tomato and broccoli, said to help reverse
breast cancer, colon cancer, leukemia and other cancers of the body.
Why not something that is safer that your body is built to accept 100%
and is proving to be far better for fighting diseases.
This green vegetable that looks like a bush, should be on everyone's
plate on a regular basis, if they wish to stay healthy! Broccoli has
been around for more than 2000 years. During the 16th century, the plant
was grown in Italy and France. It began to be commercially grown in the
United States in the 1920s. The word "broccoli" derives from the
Italian 'Brocco' meaning arm branch. Broccoli is related to
cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. The most common type of
broccoli sold in the U.S. is called sprouting, or Italian green,
broccoli; its light-green stalks are topped by umbrella-shaped clusters
of purplish-green florets. It is also known as Calabrese, after the
Italian province of Calabria, where it was first grown. Other broccoli
types are:
Broccolini: a cross between broccoli and
Chinese kale.
Broccoflower: a cross between broccoli and cauliflower, comes in a
single large head, like cauliflower, but is green rather than white.
Broccoli sprouts: a particularly concentrated source of
sulforaphane. They're expensive, but a little goes a long way.
Broccoli is an antioxidant rich food filled with the minerals Calcium,
Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese
and Selenium. Rich in vitamins such as; Vitamin C, Thiamin, Riboflavin,
Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Vitamin B-6, Folate, Folic acid, Vitamin B-12,
Vitamin A, Retinol and Vitamin E. broccoli really delivers in the
nutrition department.
A University of Illinois-Urbana study found that rats eating a
combination of broccoli and tomatoes had a lower rate of tumor growth
than rats eating broccoli or tomatoes separately. Researcher John
Erdman said the two foods bring out the best in each other, and maximize
the cancer-fighting effect of the nutrients they contain. You can mix
the two for optimum illness fighters!
When choosing broccoli in the market, select organic heads that
have tight and compact bud clusters with an even dark color. The stems
should be a lighter green than the buds and easy to pierce with a
fingernail. Avoid stalks with yellowed or open bud clusters and stems
that are hard and dry. Broccoli can be stored, unwashed, in a plastic
bag in the refrigerator crisper for days. Before use, wash by rinsing in
purified/filtered water with a splash of vinegar for disinfectant.
Storing broccoli: Refrigeration slows the
conversion of sugar to lignin, thereby preserving texture and flavor;
keeping broccoli chilled also protects vitamin C content. Store broccoli
in an open plastic bag in the refrigerator crisper, which will provide
the right balance of humidity and oxygen. Do not wash broccoli before
storing; although it needs moisture to remain fresh, any water on its
surface will encourage spoilage. Fresh broccoli is best if used within a
day or two of purchase, but it will keep for up to four days in a
crisper. Once cooked, any leftovers may be refrigerated for two to three
days in a tightly covered container.
Our favorite ways of eating broccoli are steamed with a splash of
seasoned rice vinegar, or raw with other veggies as a salad with lemon
juice with virgin olive oil or flax seed oil as dressing. Also I like
raw broccoli flowerets with sliced tomatoes and sliced sweet onions.
Grandchildren like them with a bit of ranch dressing, which I don't
think of as healthy, but a little once in a while isn't going to kill
them and it gets them to eat the broccoli! I try to make Ranch dressing
fresh so it's not quite as lethal.
Here is a great recipe:
Broccoli with Garlic
1 bunch of broccoli, OR 1 pound of frozen chopped broccoli
2 medium fresh tomatoes (cut into bite size pieces)
6 garlic cloves
1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
2 tablespoons purified/filtered water
1/4 teaspoon hot (cayenne) pepper (optional)
Wash broccoli and cut into small florets. Cut the tender parts of the
stem into smallish cubes or save add to stew or make Broccoli Slaw.
Steam broccoli in until barely tender and still bright green. Don't
overcook! For all cruciferous, this is a very important guideline!
Place olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Chop or mince the
garlic. When the oil is hot, add sea salt, then the garlic. Saute'
stirring frequently, just until the garlic starts to soften.
Quickly add the water, and the cayenne if desired. Turn heat low and
simmer for a couple of minutes.
Place the broccoli and fresh tomatoes in a large glass or crockery
serving bowl. Pour the garlic mixture over it, mixing gently to coat
each piece evenly. Serve and enjoy.
Chill leftovers and add to salad the next day.
Now go get some broccoli for your next meal, enjoy and know you are
eating for health!

Report: Mercury Levels in Vaccines Eyed
Feb 8, 2005
LOS ANGELES (AP) - A memo from the drug maker Merck & Co. (MRK)
shows that its executives were concerned about high levels of
mercury in children's vaccinations nearly eight years before
federal health officials disclosed the threat, the Los Angeles
Times reported Tuesday.
Six-month-old children who received shots could get a mercury
dose up to 87 times higher than guidelines for the maximum daily
consumption of mercury from fish, according to the March 1991
obtained by the Times.
"When viewed in this way, the mercury load appears rather
large," Dr. Maurice R. Hilleman, an internationally renowned
vaccinologist, wrote to the president of Merck's vaccine
division.
The memo came at a time when health authorities were
recommending shots for children that contained an anti-bacterial
compound called thimerosal, the Times reported. Thimerosal
contains mercury and was once used in the measles-mumps-rubella
vaccine.
In 1999, federal health officials warned that routine
vaccinations were exposing many infants to high quantities of
mercury.
Merck officials declined to discuss the memo with the Times
because of pending litigation.
Mercury-laced vaccines have led to more than 4,200 claims in a
special federal tribunal by parents who claim their children
were harmed as a result. Alleged injuries include autism and
other neurodevelopment disorders.
The newspaper obtained the memo from a lawyer who works with
parent groups on vaccine safety issues and who said he acquired
it from an unidentified whistle-blower.
Thimerosal has been largely removed from pediatric vaccines in
recent years.
Separately, Merck faces hundreds of lawsuits over Vioxx, the
popular painkiller it introduced in 1999 and pulled off the
market in September.
The company, based in Whitehouse Station, N.J., has been accused
in the suits of marketing a drug that caused heart problems and
concealing the risks. Merck has denied the allegations.
LENA'S COMMENT: If you think Merck is the only drug
company guilt of this, I have a bridge in the middle of the
desert for sale! Want to buy it? This kind of deviousness can
only happen with the blessing or our FDA but with most of the
FDA board members of one or more drug company - I named them for
you a few months ago - it can't happen! It's time to put some
honesty into medicine but it's not happening until you contact
your government leaders to tell them to push beyond their
political agenda and stand up for what's right and honest in
medicine and stop lying to the world and killing and maiming
people with false claims of helping them! When you make your
government officials aware that you will not vote for them
unless they straighten up the FDA's medical mess they will
hopefully listen and stop voting party political and start
voting for our health and welfare...

Nantucket Confronting Tick Problem
By TRUDY TYNAN
NANTUCKET, Mass. (AP) - Ask Brian Chadwick how plentiful deer are on
this island that has become an ocean retreat for the rich and famous and
he will tell you about the dark night he was patrolling the summer
estates and hit three.
"I hit one and took care of that. Then went on and hit another, dealt
with that, and then, by golly, I hit a third, and I was going along
about 10 miles an hour," the retired police officer said. "They were
just hanging out by the driveways eating the landscaping."
Hydrangea bushes and autos aren't the only things at risk.
Nantucket has one of the highest rates of tick-borne diseases in the
world. And with upwards of 2,600 deer squeezed onto an island that is
three to six miles wide and 14 miles long, state wildlife officials have
approved a request by Nantucket officials for a special six-day public
hunt beginning Feb. 7.
To some doctors it's a public health issue: a way to reduce the high
risk of some very serious human illnesses including Lyme disease,
babesiosis, a sometimes fatal malaria-like disease that attacks red
blood cells, and ehrlichiosis, another sometimes fatal disease which
attacks white blood cells.
"Nantucket has a tick problem and Nantucket has a deer problem," said
Dr. Tim Lepore, medical director of the Nantucket Cottage Hospital and
its only surgeon. "And we live cheek by jowl with both the deer and the
ticks."
The key link, he said, is the ticks' need to take a final drink of deer
blood in their adult phase to successfully reproduce. And a female deer
tick can lay 2,000 to 3,000 eggs at once.
The disease rates are startling. On Nantucket, there are 850 cases of
Lyme disease per 100,000 people compared to 23.7 cases per 100,000 for
the state and 8.2 cases per 100,000 nationwide, according to the state
health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The
island hospital treats 150 to 170 cases of Lyme disease annually plus 25
to 30 cases of babesiosis, and 15 to 20 cases of ehrlichiosis.
Despite heavy snow and the threat of more winter storms, about 600
hunters have bought special $25 permits for the February hunt.
"It should be busy all week," said Bill Woytek, a state biologist. "We
don't expect all 600 to be on the island at the same time. Most of the
hunters say they are coming out for a couple of days, and when they
leave they will be replaced by another group."
Ferry companies, which charge $230 per round trip, have sold out of
vehicle space for the first days of the season. Rooms at more than $100
a night are also "going fast," according to Tracy Bakalar, executive
director of the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce.
"It's definitely not a cheap hunt," said Daniel Pelletier of Epping, N.H.
He is heading to the island with five friends from western Massachusetts
and New Hampshire in two trucks.
It's his first time hunting on the island, and Pelletier, an avid bow
and gun hunter who got five deer in New York and New Hampshire during
the regular season, said he was intrigued by the opportunity to hunt a
different kind of terrain from the thick woods of mainland New England.
Still, Nantucket residents are sharply divided on the hunt.
Sure, they say, they know firsthand the horrors of Lyme and the other
diseases that ticks pass on to humans. The problem, they say, is they
also know all too well the mess, noise and other troubles that
irresponsible hunters, especially those who don't live on the island,
can cause.
"We're sick of it," said Carol Black, one of more than 50 islanders who
attended a November public hearing on the hunt. All who spoke had
suffered through multiple bouts of Lyme disease and some had also
survived the potentially fatal diseases.
They describe hunters leaving entrails and other body parts behind on
roads and paths after cutting up the meat to haul back on the ferry, pet
dogs hauling home grisly remains, the constant boom of shotguns.
The regular deer season runs from Oct. 11 to Dec. 31 on Nantucket, with
no hunting on Sundays. A 36-day archery season is followed by a 12-day
shotgun season, and an 18-day muzzleloader season. For the past seven
years, hunters have been allowed to kill one buck and an unlimited
number of does on the island as long as they buy a $5 permit for each
doe. Hunters killed a total of 570 deer last fall, according to
preliminary tallies. In 2003, they killed 510.
The same take rules apply during the coming week, but hunters can use
either a bow, shotgun or muzzleloader.
Several local deer hunters were wary.
"It's creating additional friction," said Dan LeMay. "The people who
live here now tolerate hunting, but this may turn them against us."
In February the deer tend to move off the interior moors and into
residential areas, warned Doug Smith, a scalloper and avid bow hunter,
who takes 10-15 deer annually on Nantucket with bow and gun.
He suggested Massachusetts follow the lead of some other states, and
consider allowing crossbows, which give archers more accuracy and cause
less disturbance than shotguns, in a special hunt.
Selectman Finn Murphy, who cast the lone opposing vote to halve the
two-week hunt, said he was against any additional hunting.
"There's no meaningful scientific evidence that an extra season is going
to lower the number of ticks, but it will certainly lower the quality of
life on the island," Murphy declared, adding he wasn't persuaded by
research studies by Harvard and other universities that found special
hunts had reduced the number of ticks in other areas.
The same tick - and about half of all the ticks on the island are
infected - can carry one, two or all three of the diseases. "You can hit
the daily double or the trifecta," Lepore said. "Some people are on
ventilators for weeks."
And the island cases are the tip of the iceberg, he said. Nantucket's
population, which is less than 10,000 year-around, swells to 50,000
during the summer when young speck-sized deer ticks are most active. And
when the tourists go home, their doctors are less likely to recognize
symptoms that can take weeks to develop and early on can resemble the
flu.
"After every tourist season I get calls from doctors in France, British
Columbia, and all sorts of odd places in the U.S.," Lepore said.
Nantucket is a prime spot for whitetails. They have no natural predators
on the island, and when snow covers the grassy moors they nibble on the
tasty landscaping at the million dollar summer homes. The only lethal
hazards they face are cars and hunters. About 200 deer-car collisions
are reported annually to island police, but they say the actual number
is likely higher.
Expansion of the regular archery season and bag limits, beginning in
1997, have only succeeded in stabilizing the Nantucket deer herd at a
concentration of 40 to 60 animals per square mile, compared to the 20 to
30 per square mile in most of the rest of the state, said Rob Deblinger,
deputy director of the state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife.
However, he said, if 100 additional deer were taken annually in a
special season, computer models show that the herd could be reduced to
30 per square mile over seven years.
