We got up to a chilly 18 degrees this morning but that has quickly warmed up to the mid 40's and sure to continue to at least 50's today... Sunny, crisp fantastically clear blue skies with the gorgeous white fluffy clouds floating in it. A great day to be alive!

I could not pass up publishing Shane's letter in Health Today... He is a scientist and knows what he speaks about and I thought that his letter to the FDA was gutsy, very good and to the point...

An open letter to the Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Mark McClellan, M.D., Ph.D.

Dear Dr. McClellan,

As commissioner of the FDA you recently banned the natural plant ephedra for human consumption.  Using the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994, you have successfully leveraged your power to convince Americans that this dietary supplement presents a significant or unreasonable risk of illness or injury when used properly.  Amazingly, you did this by paying the RAND Corporation to publish a SINGLE study showing the immediate danger of ephedra.  Never mind that the report would have failed a freshman level science course for its numerous examples of "checkbook science".  Still though, it did a great job of convincing medical doctors that this natural herb, which has been used successfully for over 5000 years in Asian medicine, is good for nothing but killing people.

You have not only perverted the truth, but also made a historic hypocritical attack on dietary supplements, which have killed less people than bee stings.  Sadly, we cannot say the same for your "FDA Approved" drugs, which according to the Journal of the American Medical Association

kill approximately 300 people per day!  Your hypocrisy is derived from the fact that American's can still obtain an "APPROVED", yet inferior form of ephedra from their doctor, which is a man-made version known as ephedrine HCl.  Moreover, they can also obtain it for their children via over-the-counter cough syrup, which contains another inferior form known as pseudo ephedrine!  Lacking the entire spectrum of ingredients when found in their natural form, these drugs are far more dangerous than ephedra yet you have approved it for use by children! 

This is ridiculous to argue about safety and efficacy.  You and I both know this is not about safety and efficacy, it's about money!  After all, According to USA Today, over half of the experts you hire have direct financial relationships with the pharmaceutical companies who are losing BILLIONS of dollars from the sales of ephedra.  Oh, I stand corrected, who WERE losing billions of dollars. 

You even went as far as RAIDING numerous ephedra suppliers and stealing thousands of dollars worth of products from their shelves!  You defended this unconstitutional act by stating:

"Consumers must have accurate and truthful health information so they can make informed choices, and the FDA will continue its aggressive enforcement efforts against companies that make misleading claims about their products."

Are you serious? Your cohorts among the pharmaceutical industry have been making "misleading claims" in their drug marketing ads since 1997 and you have not done a SINGLE thing to stop them!  In fact, they spend 2-3 billion dollars annually to not just spread lies, but DAMN lies about their man made drugs.  Your only action has been a simple letter recommending that they change their ads.  You never once stole their products.  And you never once filed charges for their blatant disregard for the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) Act, which clearly states that drug ads cannot be false and misleading. 

Your hypocrisy is never ending.  The FDA as an organization is filled with deliberate, objectively demonstrable lies and highly misleading half truths.  Worse, the FDA has completely avoided whole truths with regards to ephedra.  Considering that your FDA approved drugs kill about 100,000 per year I vote not to ban ephedra but rather ban the FDA.  Perhaps this will become a reality as more people awaken to your hypocrisy and the corruptness of the FDA.

An Ulcer Reversal

The age-old notion that stomach ulcers are caused by stress, spicy foods and other stomach irritants was officially debunked by a National Institutes of Health conference six years ago. By then, a consensus of doctors converted to the notion that most duodenal ulcers were caused by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and could be cured with antibiotics.
Turns out the new notion was another case of over-reaction.

Evidence gathered in the last six years shows that fewer than half the cases of stomach ulcers are caused by the bacterium, reports The Washington Post. The other major cause is now thought to be frequent use of aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), though the causes of at least 10 percent of cases cannot be explained, the newspaper reports.

"Warning! Cancer in your bathroom?

Did you know that your everyday personal care products might contain ingredients that can potentially cause cancer?  Although most consumers read food labels, they need to be educated to read personal care labels.  Once you go to your bathroom and compare your labels with this startling information you will be shocked.  For example did you know there?s a WARNING label on your toothpaste box?  It says;
 
?WARNING: Keep out of the reach of children under 6 years of age.  If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, seek professional help or contact a poison control center immediately.?
 
Ingredients like Sodium laureth-sulfate or sodium lauryl-sulfate is common in most toothpaste, shampoos and conditioners. This one ingredient is a know carcinogen which can penetrate the skin, get into the bloodstream and build-up in the brain, heart and kidneys.  Studies show it can cause hair loss, inhibit hair growth, cause cataracts, and even damage children?s eyes. Sls?s corrosive ?quality? makes it the dominant chemical for industrial uses such as garage floor cleaners, and engine-degreasers.

 Propylene Glycol-industrial antifreeze, is found in nearly all moisturizers.  Your skin runs on water, not anti-freeze! Material Safety Data Sheets state propylene glycol penetrates skin and can cause your liver abnormalities and kidney damage.

An article in The Boston Globe on September 6, 1997, cited Senator Edward M. Kennedy's statement that the General Accounting Office has identified more than 125 cosmetic ingredients suspected of causing cancer - along with others that may cause birth defects.

As we become health conscious, increasing our knowledge in the importance of nutritional supplements, we should pay attention to personal care products we use on a daily basis that can potentially harm our overall health.  What goes on your body is just as important as what goes in your body.
