Doctors Say Loss Can Cause a Broken Heart

Confirming the wisdom of the poets and philosophers, doctors say the sudden death of a loved one really can cause a broken heart. In fact, they have dubbed the condition "broken heart syndrome."

In a study published just in time for Valentine's Day, doctors reported how a tragic or shocking event can stun the heart and produce classic heart attack-like symptoms, including chest pain, shortness of breath and fluid in the lungs.

Unlike a heart attack, the condition is reversible. Patients often are hospitalized but typically recover within days after little more than bedrest and fluids, and suffer no permanent damage to their hearts.

In their study, published in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, doctors at Johns Hopkins University gave a name to the condition, demonstrated through sophisticated heart tests how it differs from a heart attack, and offered an explanation for what causes it.

For centuries, doctors have known that emotional shocks can trigger heart attacks and sudden deaths. Broken heart syndrome, technically known as stress cardiomyopathy, is a different phenomenon.

The Johns Hopkins doctors documented how a dayslong surge of adrenaline and other stress hormones can cause a decline in the heart's pumping capacity. The researchers theorized that the hormones probably cause tiny heart blood vessels to contract, but other explanations are possible.

Until now, doctors "were trying to explain it away, but the pieces never quite fit," said Dr. Hunter Champion, an assistant professor. "By our ability to recognize it, we've saved people from getting unnecessary (heart) procedures."

Champion and colleagues treated 19 emergency room patients with the syndrome between 1999 and 2003. For reasons that are not entirely clear, nearly all of them were postmenopausal women.

Many were grieving over the death of a husband, parent or child. Other triggers included a surprise party, car accident, armed robbery, fierce argument, court appearance and fear of public speaking. MRIs and other tests showed they had not suffered heart attacks.

Other doctors have since told Champion that they have seen the same thing, and researchers in Japan and Minnesota have reported similar cases.

"This is probably something that happens all the time," but most people do not seek treatment, Champion said.

Dr. Daniel Shindler, director of the echocardiography lab at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, N.J., said it apparently happened to his wife last week, when she was upset over her sister's death. The wife, who also is a doctor, sensed abnormalities in her heart. Testing showed abnormal rhythms, but she is fine now.

Shindler said the researchers' conclusions make sense, given the well-known link between the brain and heart, and offer the first explanation he has heard for the phenomenon.

Dr. Sidney Smith, former American Heart Association president and director of University of North Carolina's Center for Cardiovascular Science and Medicine, said the study will lead more ER and heart doctors to consider the syndrome when examining patients with chest pain.

"We'll definitely be paying more attention now than before" to patients who are grieving, Shindler said.

Phytolacca americana aka Poke Salat aka Pokeweed

Watching all the greenery popping their heads through the ground, from all the rain, brings back many memories of a ritual I so miss.

During my years of living in Oklahoma as a young child there was a spring ritual that we had that produced a tasty and healthy vegetable dish. It was known to us as "poke salat pickin time". This tasty green popular wild food is found mostly in the eastern half of the United States but can be found in the western portion in some areas. Each year as spring approaches I start to hunger for these tasty greens.

We didn't start that ritual! Native Americans introduced the plant to the early European settlers and fast became such a popular pot herb that seeds soon were being cultivated back in Europe. After a long winter without fresh food, the early settlers looked forward to cooking the first tender green leaves of pokeweed. It gave them vitamins and was a good spring cleansing tonic. They'd cook it up with Lamb's Quarters ? another of my favorite wild greens - and Dock, which are also early spring greens. Some people today still cook and eat poke greens in the early spring although fast food is overshadowing healthy eating that I fear this green will lose it's appeal in future generations. Growing up it was simply understood that everyone ate greens and liked them but now most children have never tasted a green food or if they have most have chosen to dislike them.

Salat is the German word for salad, and probably came with German settlers. In towns you'll find pokeweed growing wild in alleyways and vacant lots. In the country it grows in the fence rows and along the edges of woods. When mature, in mid and late summer, it has clusters of shiny purple berries which birds love to eat. Poke is poisonous in uncooked stage and cannot be eaten raw in salads!

Pokeweed is a large and coarse herbaceous weed with big leaves, a stout reddish trunk, widely branching reddish stems, and elongated erect clusters of small white flowers that give way to drooping clusters of dark purple berries. The leaves are smooth, long and taper at both ends. As the season progresses all parts of the plant take on more of a reddish or purplish hue. Pokeberry is an herbaceous perennial that dies back in winter and grows quickly in spring Mature leaves give off an unpleasant odor when bruised. In addition to eating the young shoots and leaves, native Americans and early American settlers made a crimson dye from the berry juice and continues with some today. The berry juice was used for ink.

Only the young shoots and developing leaves - before they take on their reddish hue - can be eaten, and only after boiling for 20-30 minutes in at least two changes of water. Be very careful not to get any of the root when picking the young shoots.

Native Americans from throughout its range used pokeweed concoctions for a wide variety of internal and external medicinal applications. It seems the berry juice has been used for pimples and boils, in some cases taken internally in other cases applied to the skin. It has also been taken for joint pain and applied to sore breasts. Leaf concoctions have been used as an expectorant, emetic and cathartic. My mother would make a poke poultice for boils and it worked?

Sadly I cannot find the exact nutrient makeup of Poke Salat but is said to contain the same nutrients as other greens and cabbage families. In the spring, the tender young shoots are picked and boiled in two changes of water to help remove any toxic properties. Traditionally cooking; drained leaves are then seasoned with salt, pepper and bacon drippings and then fried in an iron skillet. Personally, any way you fix spinach will work with poke greens.

My mother served poke greens two ways.
One; by boiling until tender then she would drain them and put into a skillet and add one egg and one small chopped onion per 2 cups of greens and cook until eggs were set and onions tender crunchy.
Two; my most favorite, was simply boiled for about 15 minutes, drain off water, add more water and a few pieces of beef, sliced onions, salt and pepper to taste and boiled until the beef was fork tender.
Both ways are tasty.

I now live in an area that I cannot find wild poke greens and am forced to buy canned ones, which just isn't nearly even the same!

NATIONAL VACCINE INFORMATION CENTER CALLS "ANTI-TERROR" BILL "UNCONSTITUTIONAL"

Washington, D.C. - The nation's largest and oldest consumer-led vaccine safety organization, the National Vaccine Information Center, is calling a bill introduced into Congress by Senators Gregg and Frist entitled Protecting America in the War on Terror Act of 2005 S.3 Section 319F-1(a), as an "assault on the Constitution" and a serious threat to protecting the health and informed consent rights of those who use federally regulated vaccines and drugs.

"This bill is labeled as a 'anti-terror' bill," said NVIC president and co-founder, Barbara Loe Fisher, "but it is power grab by the federal government and an assault on self-governance and the informed consent ethic. It takes away the freedom of the people to make their voices heard through their elected state representatives and protect themselves from unsafe drugs, such as Celebrex and Vioxx, and unsafe vaccines, such as those that contain high levels of mercury. It gives unprecedented liability protection to the drug industry and broad powers to federal officials to hide the truth from the people about vaccine and prescription drug risks."

The Tenth Amendment to the Constitution specifies that "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people." Protecting the public health was not delegated to the federal government and public health laws, including laws governing use of vaccines, have always been under the control of citizens residing in each state.

Of major concern to vaccine safety advocates, are the following provisions in S.3:

*       Eliminates a state's right to more strictly regulate vaccines and drugs and more fully inform their citizens about vaccine and drug risks than does the federal government. Laws already passed in California and Iowa limiting mercury content in vaccines would be repealed.
*       Gives comprehensive liability protections to drug companies. Eliminates a citizen's right to seek justice in state courts for drug and vaccine injuries and deaths and limits awards in federal courts. Gives tax credits, grants and patent extensions to the drug industry.
*       Allows the Department of Health and Department of Justice, the defendants in the federal Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, to write the terms of their own defense in order to further limit awards to vaccine injured children;
*       Creates and funds a mandatory, national electronic tracking system
operated by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to monitor vital records of citizens relating to both notifiable and non-notifiable diseases and ?new trends? and ?patterns in public health.? Creates penalties for states and health care providers not reporting in a ?timely manner? to the national tracking system. There are no provisions for mandatory reporting of serious health problems following vaccine and prescription drug use or punishments for not reporting serious side effects.

S. 3 is being promoted by sponsors as a military veteran benefit bill because it raises the death benefits and other financial support for the families of soldiers who lost their lives in the war in Iraq.

"The irony of this bill is that it is using the families of citizens who have given their lives to defend our nation's freedom in order to take rights and freedoms away from other families. Military veterans should not be used to protect the drug industry and take away the freedom for all Americans to have their voices heard through their elected state representatives," said Fisher. "In his Inaugural speech, President Bush said 'there is no justice without freedom.' This bill is does not serve justice or freedom."

The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) is a national, non-profit organization founded in 1982 by parents of vaccine injured children. NVIC worked with Congress on the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986 and has worked with families in states to protect informed consent rights, including the right to have full and accurate information on vaccine benefits and risks prior to vaccination and make informed, voluntary vaccine decisions. NVIC worked with families in California on the Mercury Free Act of 2004, which limited the amount of mercury in vaccines sold in that state.

The US Senate Bill 3 Section 319F-1(a) pours huge amounts of money into bioterrorism with absolutely no caring about the innocent victims... Taking away the right to retribution for damages caused by the drug and chemical companies lack of concern for people and more about money... Do they even care? It seems not since they continue to give free rain to big companies to produce ever more killing and maiming drugs and products. This isn't Monopoly, these are real lives being put at risk and in danger then our leaders are letting the company's get off scott free who put those dangerous products there. I call it the company's "Get Out Of Jail Free Card"! Sadly our leaders are now riding this bill on the back of a bill that appears to be good - there is always a little bit of good so congressmen and congresswomen will not read the full bill to find out it's not at all good... The children and adults that will be lost to death and/or injury from the after effects of this bill, does not make it a smart bill at all?
