We are home, at least for a few days, if we are lucky a couple of weeks, but my dh isn't handling his dental work well... The nice part is we get to leave the cold weather and go into warm for a few days at a time so I'm enjoying the change... Almost like being a snowbird, since each visit means going into the heart of snowbird country and we meet so many great people while there...

The University of Ulster at Jordanstown in the United Kingdom enrolled 22 women in a study to evaluate the effects of short periods of exercise on overall health. One group made no changes in their lifestyles, while the other stopped using the elevator and started taking the stairs.

Using a rather long staircase -- 199 stairs -- the study group started with one ascent a day, and at the end of seven weeks was going up the stairs six or seven times each day.

At the end of the seven-week study, the control group's health hadn't changed. But the study group had lower overall cholesterol, a higher HDL (good cholesterol) level and could climb the stairs with lower oxygen consumption and a slower heart rate.

Deaths Partially Halt Diabetes Study

WASHINGTON (AP) - An unexpected number of deaths among patients receiving intense therapy to lower their blood sugar forced the National Institutes of Health to abruptly cut short part of a major study on diabetes and heart disease.

The therapy was aimed at reducing to normal levels the blood sugar of type 2 diabetics at especially high risk of heart attack and stroke. There were 257 deaths among people receiving intense diabetes treatment, compared to 203 in the standard treatment group, NIH's National Heart Lung and Blood Institute said.

Some 10,251 people were enrolled in the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes study, which had been under way for four years.

"A thorough review of the data shows that the medical treatment strategy of intensively reducing blood sugar below current clinical guidelines causes harm in these especially high-risk patients with type 2 diabetes," said Dr. Elizabeth G. Nabel, director of the Institute.

"Though we have stopped this part of the trial, we will continue to care for these participants, who now will receive the less-intensive standard treatment. In addition, we will continue to monitor the health of all participants, seek the underlying causes for this finding, and carry on with other important research within ACCORD," she said in a statement.

The study focuses on treatments for adults with type 2 diabetes, the most common form, who are at especially high risk for heart disease.

The action was recommended by an independent advisory group of experts in diabetes, heart disease, epidemiology, patient care, biostatistics, medical ethics and clinical trial design that has been monitoring ACCORD since it began.

Participants will continue to receive blood sugar treatment from their study clinicians until the planned trial conclusion in June 2009.

NHLBI said the intensive treatment group had a target blood sugar goal of less than 6 percent, which is similar to blood sugar levels in adults without diabetes. The standard treatment group aimed for a target similar to what is achieved, on average, by those with diabetes in the United States, of 7 to 7.9 percent.

LENA'S COMMENT: I don't like the "PARTIAL HALT" bit. That means people can still be at risk in the other part of the study and will an incomplete study be worthwhile? I doubt it...

Oh Boy! This bit of information and specifically this article has whipped up a storm of controversy and screaming throughout the Fibromyalgia and pain clinic world.

Fibromyalgia & Lyrica - A help or another problem in the works?

In the wake of the FDA approval of Lyrica, the first medicine approved to treat fibromyalgia, the New York Times has published a controversial article questioning whether the disease exists at all.

The Times reporter says that patient advocacy groups and doctors who specialize in fibromyalgia believe that the Lyrica approval is a milestone, and hope its approval will legitimize fibromyalgia in the same manner that Prozac legitimized depression. But, says the Times, other doctors believe that fibromyalgia as a disease does not exist, and that Lyrica will be taken by millions of people who don't need it.

Along with that controversy is a fact that Lyrica itself is a drug originally designed for diabetic nerve pain that was rejected because of its unimpressive lack of results and many side effects, including weight gain, edema, dizziness and sleepiness. This has left some wondering if the repositioning of Lyrica is little more than a cynical ploy to sell a failed medication. The potential for weight gain is a special concern, because many fibromyalgia patients are already overweight.

The Times article has already generated a good deal of online comment, and highlights the uneasy intersection where drug company greed and medicalization of nonexistent illnesses meets conventional medicine's inability to diagnose and treat real problems.

Is the Food or The Environment Responsible For Puberty at the Age of 8

U.S. girls are reaching puberty at younger ages than ever before. In the 1990s, breast development -- the first sign of puberty in girls -- at age 8 was considered an abnormal event that should be investigated by an endocrinologist.

However, by 1999, following a 1997 study that found almost half of African Americans and 15 percent of whites had begun breast development by age 8, the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society suggested changing what is viewed as "normal."

They suggested changing puberty at age 8 from abnormal to normal, and lowering the abnormal puberty age to 7 for white girls and 6 for African American girls.

But while some experts believe the shift is nothing to worry about, others, including parents, are alarmed.

Early puberty, which exposes girls to estrogen for more of their lives, is linked to breast cancer and other health risks, but scientists are at a loss of how to study the potential causes for early puberty, which include:

Hormones in food
Pesticides in produce
Phthalates in plastics and cosmetics
Obesity, which exposes girls to more estrogen
Stress from living in a fatherless household
Sexually suggestive TV shows

Conducting a study to test these factors is next to impossible because there are so many estrogen-like chemicals in the environment that there are no control populations to balance out the study.

And while scientists grapple with how to figure out what's causing girls to develop at younger and younger ages, parents are forced to have adult conversations with their children much sooner than expected.

LENA'S COMMENT: I ran across this happening while working with 9 pediatricians in S. California and at that time it wasn't a huge thing happening. It has now gotten much worse and most every pediatrician is seeing it... Also saw it reversed when the child was taken off all meat and dairy products. Now that told me that it was the chemicals and hormones in those foods creating the problem. Not a good thing!
