CDC Finds Dramatic
Rise in Drug Deaths
Feb 9, 2006
By MIKE STOBBE
ATLANTA (AP) - Unintentional fatal drug overdoses in the United States
nearly doubled from 1999 to 2004, overtaking falls to become the
nation's second-leading cause of accidental death, behind automobile
crashes, the government reported.
The number of accidental drug overdose deaths rose from 11,155 in 1999
to 19,838 in 2004, according to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention.
The report was based on death certificates, which do not clearly detail
which drugs played the greatest role. But CDC researchers said they
believe sedatives and prescription painkillers like Vicodin and
OxyContin were the chief cause of the increase.
OxyContin has been blamed for hundreds of deaths across the country in
recent years, becoming such a scourge in Appalachia that it is known as
"hillbilly heroin."
Deaths from falls climbed between 1999 and 2004 at a more modest rate,
from 13,162 to 18,807, the CDC said. Motor vehicle crashes accounted for
40,965 fatalities in 1999 and 43,432 in 2004.
The South had one of the lowest fatal drug overdose rates in the nation
in 1999, but it doubled by 2004. The South now ties the West for having
the highest rate - about 8 per 100,000 population.
"This is the first study really to describe the large relative increases
in poisoning mortality rates in rural states. Historically, the drug
issue has been seen as an urban problem," said Dr. Len Paulozzi, a CDC
epidemiologist.
The federal report, issued this week, noted that accidental drug
overdoses remain most common in men and in people 35 to 54. But the most
dramatic increases in death rates were for white females, young adults
and Southerners
Other findings:
- The death rates for men remained roughly twice the rate for women, but
the female rate doubled from 1999 to 2004 while the male rate increased
by 47 percent.
- The rate for white women rose more dramatically than for any other
gender group, to 5 deaths per 100,000 population.
- The rate of overdose deaths among teens and young adults, ages 15 to
24, is less than half that of the 35-to-54 group. But it rose much more
dramatically, climbing 113 percent in the study years, to 5.3 deaths per
100,000 population.
About 50 percent of the deaths in 2004 were attributed to narcotics and
hallucinogens, a category that includes heroin, cocaine and prescription
painkillers like Vicodin and OxyContin.
Earlier research suggests that deaths from illegal drugs appear to be
holding steady.
"There is a misperception that because a drug is a prescription
medicine, it's safe to use for non-medical reasons. And clearly that is
not true," said Dr. Anne Marie McKenzie-Brown, a pain medicine expert at
Atlanta's Emory Crawford Long Hospital.
LENA'S
COMMENT: They still avoided deaths from other drugs, in that count or the count
would be much higher!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

True or False? Fatigue is a common symptom of high blood
pressure.
False. I've heard many say this told them their blood pressure
was high, when checked was not the case... Hypertension has no
noticeable symptoms, so regular blood pressure checkups are essential
for detection. Fluctuations in blood pressure throughout the day is
normal as is different pressure from one arm to the next.

Ugly Toenails a Warning
By Vivian Richardson, Ivanhoe Health Correspondent
ORLANDO, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Unsightly toenails may be more than a reason
not to wear sandals. Now, doctors say acting quickly to eradicate fungal nail
infections may save diabetic patients from amputation.
Researchers from Rosalind Franklin University in North Chicago report about 75
percent of people with diabetes who are at high risk for amputation will also
have diseased toenails. Spotting fungal nail infections and starting treatment
quickly may help a diabetes patient avoid a more severe infection, which could
force doctors to amputate a toe, a foot, or even a leg.
"If someone shows up with an ugly toenail, then that, by extension, seems to be
a harbinger for a toenail infection, which is also a harbinger for complications
in high risk people with diabetes," Rosalind Franklin podiatrist David
Armstrong, D.P.M, M.Sc., Ph.D., told Ivanhoe. "Often the fungal toenail can also
lead to athlete's foot, and athlete's foot can lead to cracks in the skin, which
can lead to other types of bacterial infections."
Amputation is a serious risk for diabetes patients. People with diabetes may
develop blood circulation and nerve problems in their lower extremities, which
can lead to slow-healing wounds. When diabetics develop severe ulcers or
infected wounds on their feet or legs, doctors must sometimes amputate the
affected area to prevent the infection from spreading throughout the body.
Dr. Armstrong said a toenail infection could be the first damage in the armor.
"Often so many of these problems, like amputation, start out as stupid little
things, and maybe a toenail infection is one of those stupid little things," he
said.
Treating a toenail infection is a slow process. After trimming away diseased
portions, the doctor will prescribe a topical or oral anti-fungal medication. It
can take many months for the toenail to grow out and be healthy again. However,
Dr. Armstrong recommends seeking treatment to anyone who is bothered by the way
his or her toenails look or feel.
"If we just get high risk patients and doctors to look at people's feet a little
bit more, that's what is probably going to stop the needless number of high
level amputations, not only in the United States, but around the world," said
Dr. Armstrong. "I think that's the bottom line."

Statins Too
many people are taking them (and they're doing far less good
than you think)
February 11, 2007
Cholesterol-lowering statins have become one of the most popular
?just in case? drugs on the market. They're handed out to anyone
who may be at risk from developing heart disease ? which, in the
eyes of the doctor, will be pretty much everyone over the age of
50 or so.
So it's not surprising to learn that 36m Americans take a statin
every day, generating annual sales of $15.5bn for the
manufacturers, and making two statins - Lipitor and Zocor - the
top two best-selling drugs in the USA.
Statin use has been increasing by an average of 12 per cent a
year, and it's a trend that is likely to continue while medicine
sees almost all of us as being at risk from raised cholesterol
levels.
There's evidence to suggest that those of us with a diagnosed
heart condition may benefit from a statin, but this is a small
fraction of those who take the drug.
A new Harvard study has discovered that just 8 per cent of
people taking a statin had a heart condition ? the rest were
merely considered to be at risk, a judgment that was entirely
subjective, and based on very little evidence.
The Harvard researchers looked at the results of eight trials,
and discovered that the statins didn't reduce the number of
deaths, even among those with a known heart condition.
The drugs had a marginally positive effect on men, although it
works out that 67 people would need to take the drug for five
years in order to prevent one heart attack. It had no benefit
whatsoever among 10,990 women who took it.
All of this suggests that far too many people are taking a
statin, and with no positive outcome. Instead of being the
universal ?just-in-case? drug, its use should be restricted to
people who have been diagnosed with a heart condition, the
researchers conclude.
Their findings follow on from last week's discovery that statins
may cause Parkinson's (see WDDTY E-news No. 326), and from
earlier studies that suggest the drugs may be causing the heart
conditions they're supposed to be preventing.

Mystery Ailment
Strikes Honeybees
Feb 11, 2007
By GENARO C. ARMAS
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - A mysterious illness is killing tens
of thousands of honeybee colonies across the country,
threatening honey production, the livelihood of beekeepers and
possibly crops that need bees for pollination.
Researchers are scrambling to find the cause of the ailment,
called Colony Collapse Disorder.
Reports of unusual colony deaths have come from at least 22
states. Some affected commercial beekeepers - who often keep
thousands of colonies - have reported losing more than 50
percent of their bees. A colony can have roughly 20,000 bees in
the winter, and up to 60,000 in the summer.
"We have seen a lot of things happen in 40 years, but this is
the epitome of it all," Dave Hackenberg, of Lewisburg-based
Hackenberg Apiaries, said by phone from Fort Meade, Fla., where
he was working with his bees.
The country's bee population had already been shocked in recent
years by a tiny, parasitic bug called the varroa mite, which has
destroyed more than half of some beekeepers' hives and
devastated most wild honeybee populations.
Along with being producers of honey, commercial bee colonies are
important to agriculture as pollinators, along with some birds,
bats and other insects. A recent report by the National Research
Council noted that in order to bear fruit, three-quarters of all
flowering plants - including most food crops and some that
provide fiber, drugs and fuel - rely on pollinators for
fertilization.
Hackenberg, 58, was first to report Colony Collapse Disorder to
bee researchers at Penn State University. He notified them in
November when he was down to about 1,000 colonies - after having
started the fall with 2,900.
"We are going to take bees we got and make more bees ... but
it's costly," he said. "We are talking about major bucks. You
can only take so many blows so many times."
One beekeeper who traveled with two truckloads of bees to
California to help pollinate almond trees found nearly all of
his bees dead upon arrival, said Dennis vanEnglesdorp, acting
state apiarist for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
"I would characterize it as serious," said Daniel Weaver,
president of the American Beekeeping Federation. "Whether it
threatens the apiculture industry in the United States or not,
that's up in the air."
Scientists at Penn State, the University of Montana and the U.S.
Department of Agriculture are among the quickly growing group of
researchers and industry officials trying to solve the mystery.
Among the clues being assembled by researchers:
- Although the bodies of dead bees often are littered around a
hive, sometimes carried out of the hive by worker bees, no bee
remains are typically found around colonies struck by the
mystery ailment. Scientists assume these bees have flown away
from the hive before dying.
- From the outside, a stricken colony may appear normal, with
bees leaving and entering. But when beekeepers look inside the
hive box, they find few mature bees taking care of the younger,
developing bees.
- Normally, a weakened bee colony would be immediately overrun
by bees from other colonies or by pests going after the hive's
honey. That's not the case with the stricken colonies, which
might not be touched for at least two weeks, said Diana
Cox-Foster, a Penn State entomology professor investigating the
problem.
"That is a real abnormality," Hackenberg said.
Cox-Foster said an analysis of dissected bees turned up an
alarmingly high number of foreign fungi, bacteria and other
organisms and weakened immune systems.
Researchers are also looking into the effect pesticides might be
having on bees.
In the meantime, beekeepers are wondering if bee deaths over the
last couple of years that had been blamed on mites or poor
management might actually have resulted from the mystery
ailment.
"Now people think that they may have had this three or four
years," vanEnglesdorp said.
