Greetings and welcome to A Natural Environmental Health Facts ezine. I am livid at what I am reading the past few days in the Associated Press and other news publications on the health side of news!!! I've been known, at times,  to walk to a different beat of the drums than the rest of the world. My desire is to pass on the lessons I've learned and help people understand that it takes guts and work to be healthy and stay healthy in our world of chemicals in every aspect of our life... The health news that I read these days makes it even more important to know what's real and what's not! We must be activists for our health or we are not going to have healthy ends to our lives... Having worked in medicine for twenty plus years I found too many people staying ill and never improving with traditional medicine, including me and therefore I went looking for something that could make a difference in my health and the patients I came in contact with daily and found a lot of hope and cures for the asking, for all of us... I see that is going to get worse as medicine is looking at their bank accounts and not a person's right to get healthy! This ezine is my vehicle for passing on what I've learned and if you are timid you may not like what I have to comment on and pass on, but that's okay I do not ask anyone to substitute your thoughts or actions for mine...

This week I am going to start a new column that I'm calling "FOOD OF THE WEEK." This column will be run for the whole week with a new food change with the weekly Sunday's edition and will publish for the whole week... Check out what this weeks pick is!

Volunteers Exit Drug Trial After Suicide

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Nearly a fifth of the volunteers testing a new antidepressant for Eli Lilly and Co. drug have dropped out since the suicide of one of the participants, the drug maker said.

Lilly also acknowledged Wednesday that four other suicides have occurred during several years of human testing of duloxetine, the main ingredient in drugs Lilly is developing to treat depression and stress urinary incontinence.

Other antidepressants have recently been scrutinized for possible links to suicide in young people. Earlier this month, a government drug advisory panel said it wasn't clear that some of these drugs lead to suicide, but until that is settled, parents and doctors need better warnings that they may cause agitation, anxiety and hostility in a few young patients.

In the duloxetine test, a 19-year-old former college student hanged herself Saturday in a Lilly research lab at the Indiana University Medical School. She had recently been weaned from a higher-than-normal dose of the drug, a spokesman for Eli Lilly told The Indianapolis Star.

"It's a sad fact, it's a tragic fact, that sometimes these patients commit suicide," Lilly spokesman Rob Smith said. But the company does not believe duloxetine played a part in the death of Traci Johnson of Bensalem, Pa., who was described as healthy and not suffering from depression.

The other suicides involved patients with depression. Some activists who question the safety of antidepressants said Johnson's death points to the drug as a possible cause.

Three participants in the study in Indianapolis and 16 volunteers in Evansville have quit. The study still has about 100 participants, Smith said

"We clearly anticipated that a number of patients would not continue the study," Smith said, adding that the Indianapolis-based company would still have enough participants to complete the study.

The rate of suicide for depressed patients taking duloxetine is lower than for those taking a placebo, Smith said. It also is lower than the rate for another group of antidepressants known as SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Drugs such as Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft are SSRIs.

Lena's Note: Think twice before becoming a guinea pig for the drug companies! The other 4/5's of that group aren't too smart in my opinion. For years I watched suicides correspond with taking antidepressants, but it isn't being publicized for all to read. The pharmaceutical industry has a war mentality, "The end justifies the means." or "Casualties are part of war, whether it be medical or world." In tracking herbal/natural medicine there is a trend emerging that is very frightening. That trend is that when leaving herbal/natural medicine behind bad things are happening! Until Asian cultures began to accept and live Westernized lives of diet and medicine mental illness was almost unheard of but is increasing rapidly as has the U.S. and other countries.

Limits Recommended on Meningitis Drug

ATLANTA (AP) - Health officials are recommending doctors delay giving the fourth and final shot of a childhood meningitis vaccine because the vaccine is in short supply.

The shortage was attributed to production problems at the manufacturer, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday that doctors should temporarily stop giving the fourth dose of Prevnar, also known as PCV7. The drug is expected to be in limited supply through July, the CDC said.

"From the evidence we have, there should not be any adverse effects from delaying the fourth dose," CDC spokesman Curtis Allen said.

 
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Practice agreed with the CDC's recommendation.

Prevnar is used to protect children against invasive pneumococcal disease, which can lead to meningitis or bloodstream infections.

Wyeth said a one-week production stoppage last year created a bottleneck that led to shipment delays.

All children should receive their fourth dose after supplies return to normal, the CDC said. But officials said high-risk children - such as those with sickle cell disease or chronic diseases - should receive the fourth dose now. www.ap.org

LENA'S NOTE: What a lot of crap this is! If "From the evidence we have, there should not be any adverse effects from delaying the fourth dose," it isn't going to make a difference? Why then must children be subjected to it at all? I was taught that following the letter (timeliness was of essence in protection) with immunizations was the absolute must or a patient was at risk and I blindly passed that on to parents for years before I got a brain and started learning for myself. Of course that was all a load of garbage anyway but they teach their mindless followers the necessity of following the letter on their dangerous immunizations and now they say this one DOESN'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE? WAKE UP WORLD SOMEONE IS LYING TO YOU AND ME!

#1 Nutrient Rich Fruit

This weeks food is the #1 fruit in the nutrient content and health. And God knows it's hard to find any food with enough nutrients to really help us without eating a truck load!

Kiwi - my favorite fruit and what I didn't realize is the outstanding healthy properties it contains.

A tiny fruit with a great texture and taste and goes with just about anything. Kiwi looks a little like a fuzzy, brown egg. It was originally cultivated in ancient China, where it was known as the Chinese gooseberry. It was taken to New Zealand in the early 1900s and renamed after their national treasure, the kiwi bird, which, interestingly, is a fuzzy brown bird that does not actually fly.

The kiwi is technically a berry, is normally about 3 inches long and weighs about 2.5 ounces. When it is harvested, the pickers wear cotton gloves to make sure that the fruit is not damaged. Inside it is a symmetrical combination of dark green fruit, and black seeds. The conversion of starch into sugar keeps on going after harvest so it keeps getting riper and riper.

When you are choosing a kiwi, look for firm, unblemished fruit. Size doesn't matter. If it is ripe, the outside of the fruit should give way to slight pressure. If it doesn't give a little, it isn't ready to eat. You can speed up the ripening process by putting it in a vented plastic bag with an apple or a banana and leaving it out on the kitchen counter.

One tiny Kiwi has less then 50 calories - A great source of Vitamin E, folate (B vitamin) and magnesium... The kiwi also contains lutein, a phytochemical found in green plant foods that scientists say reduces the risk of cancer, heart disease and macular degeneration, which is creating epidemic proportion of blindness in the over 40 generation.

An interesting property of kiwi is an enzyme called actinidin that turns this fruit into an excellent meat tenderizer. Just puree fresh kiwi and use it as a marinade for beef, poultry or pork. Let it stand about 30 minutes before cooking. Or, if you want to tenderize the meat without flavoring it, you can just cut the fruit in half and rub it over the meat before cooking.

Because of this enzyme, you cannot use kiwi in foods like gelatin unless you poach it very briefly to deactivate the enzyme. It must also be briefly poached before using it with any dairy products like ice cream or frozen yogurt because otherwise it will impart a strange flavor, but not dangerous to your health.

When Rutgers University did a testing of fruits and their nutrient contents Kiwi was the hands down winner with the highest nutrient content.

I Told You In 2003 Your Rights Had Been Removed!

If you visited your doctor in 2003 you were asked to sign a new medical release form and they probably told you it was to protect your patient privacy... There was a law already in place that TRULY DID PROTECT your privilege of privacy that prevented medical offices, hospitals and pharmacies from releasing your name or records to anyone without your permission but the new one, that went into effect in 2003, was to give the government, pharmaceutical industry and anyone else the government deemed okay the right to have your name and/or records without you knowing or giving them permission. This was a law pandering to the insurance industry that is way over the top... Another freedom eroded! I had a disagreement with my GYN's office over that very paper but they didn't seem to care or understand that the old law was really a protector of my rights and the new one gave my rights away. They simply blindly following the law without questioning it... All you had to do was read it and see what it really was saying...The abortion clinics are the only ones speaking out about this abusive "law"! Regardless of where you stand on the abortion issue this is an issue that effects your rights in all areas of health. Any insurance company can obtain your records and you will never know they asked or a pharmaceutical company that the government deems okay can take your name and use it for whatever purpose and you will never know it... If a hospital, medical office or pharmacy refuses to release your information they face losing their license. Your medical records can now be read by anyone that has the government in their pocket... You should be up in arms and writing your Senators and Congressmen to negate that "law". I did my part before it became law but we were not able to rally enough support to override it because people wanted to believe the leaders are doing what's best for us... Well here is the first publicized case of what that "law" did, but who knows how many have your information and you don't know about it because your doctor/pharmacy/hospital blindly follow "the law"... Obviously some of these hospitals chose to fight rather than risk their patients privacy and the government was forced to subpoena them and "the act signed into law" referred to here is the one I just told you about...

Justice Dept. Demands Abortion Records

NEW YORK (AP) - Under fire from abortion-rights groups, Attorney General John Ashcroft insisted Thursday that doctor-patient privacy is not threatened by a government attempt to subpoena medical records in a lawsuit over the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act.

At stake are records documenting certain late-term abortions performed by doctors who have joined in a legal challenge of the disputed ban. President Bush signed the act into law last year.

Critics of the subpoenas accuse the Justice Department of trying to intimidate doctors and patients involved in the contested type of abortion.

At least six hospitals have been targeted by subpoenas, including facilities in New York and Michigan which said they are weighing how to respond. Last week, a federal judge in Chicago blocked release of records from Northwestern Memorial Hospital; another judge is considering a similar request from Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Lena's PS: These hospitals face being closed if the courts don't back them up, even if they do, they face all kinds of tongue-in-cheek retaliation from the very industry that's in charge of the necessary supplies for treating patients!
