There are these creatures called free-radicals over
producing and roaming your body just waiting for the
moment to make you ill. Defense and defeat is the
secret to preventing them from being successful illness
and disease creators!
Antioxidants are the defenders needed to neutralize
harmful molecules in your body which are called free
radicals. While free radicals play some essential roles
in health producing energy and fighting infections. On
the other hand too many causes oxidation thereby
damaging your body's cells.
Over production of free-radicals come from lack of minerals,
vitamins, and the inducing into the body of environmental
poisoning both internal and external along with foods lacking
the nutrients for health. Oxidation from too many free-radicals
age cells and sets up the stage for diseases such as
heart disease and various kinds of cancer.
There are many different types of free radicals, and no
single antioxidant can neutralize all types. Your best
bet is to take a variety of antioxidants or to use a
complete antioxidant formula. Whichever you choose.
Here are the six of the most effective antioxidants
according to experts.
1. ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID: This powerful antioxidant
plays two important roles; It boosts your body's
production of glutathione an antioxidant and it helps
your body recycle and reuse other antioxidants so
they can keep fighting free radicals. Take at least
50 mg daily.
2. CAROTENOIDS: Beta-carotene is the best-known
carotenoid, but lutein and lycopene are also key.
Found in fruits and vegetables, they protect plants
against free radical damage. They do the same to
your body when consumed. Take at least 10 to 500
mg of mixed carotenoids daily.
3. COENZYME Q10: This free-radical fighter plays
a crucial role in maintaining cell energy. Take 30 to
100 mg daily.
4. FLAVONOIDS: Fruits and vegetable are loaded
with these plant pigments, such as quercetin and
anthocyanidins, which help fight free-radical damage.
Take 250 to 2000 mg daily.
5. VITAMIN C: Contrary to recent news flashes this
is still a most important vitamin. This antioxidant
boosts your immunity. Most animals make their own
vitamin C, but humans have lost their ability to do so.
Take 500 to 2,000 mg daily ~NOTE: People who have
hemachromatosis or a history of kidney stones should
limit intake to 250 mg daily.
6. VITAMIN E: This may very well be the single most
important vitamin you can take. Its role in preventing
coronary heart disease has been studied for more than
50 years. Take 400 IU daily of the Natural form,
d-alpha tocopherol. ~NOTE: If you are on blood thinners
or aspirin daily, Vitamin E may intensify the blood-thinning
effect of these drugs. Talk to your doctor about reducing
your medication dosage to make it possible to take
Vitamin E.
Maximize absorption: Take folic acid and B vitamins
with food. Many people have a genetic defect that
limits folic acid absorption.
Here's some tips on deciphering supplement labels.
1. In natural brands, the most common additives that
give a tablet its form, are cellulose and magnesium
stearates, which appear to be safe.
2. Conventional brands, usually found in pharmacies
and grocery stores, contain a variety of sweeteners &
chemicals - making them difficult to impossible to be
absorbed - and/or colors that are unnecessary and may
cause allergic reactions. Among those additives are
lactose, modified food starch, corn starch, polysorbate
80, sucrose, fructose, maltodextrin, polyethylene glycol,
artificial colors, and edible ink.
3. Supplement bottles will usually give the percentage of
or DV (daily value) of each nutrient your supplement
contains. The DV is a dosage guide that's more up-to-date
but roughly equivalent to the old RDA (Recommended
dietary allowance). At the end of the list, you may find
nutrients without an established DV. Don't be put off by
this -many important nutrients, such as carotenoids and
flavonoids don't have DVs.
4. Vegetarians should avoid capsules made of gelatin, an
animal byproduct. Choose brands with cellulose instead.

A Bad Cycle
Bicycling as your only exercise is not a good idea for your bones.
Scottish researchers compared bone density among three groups of males,
all about the same age and body size: competitive cyclists, competitive
runners and non-exercisers. The runners and cyclists had competed for at
least three years and trained for at least four hours a week.
Compared with the non-exercisers, runners had greater bone mineral
density in their spines and cyclists had less, say the University of
Edinburgh researchers. The report advises young athletes, whose bone
density has not yet peaked, not to engage in cycling exclusively, but to
include other load-bearing exercises and sports.

#1 Nutrient Rich Fruit
This weeks food is the #1 fruit in the nutrient content
and health. And God knows it's hard to find any food with enough
nutrients to really help us without eating a truck load!
Kiwi - my favorite fruit and what I didn't realize is the outstanding
healthy properties it contains.
A tiny fruit with a great texture and taste and goes with just about
anything. Kiwi looks a little like a fuzzy, brown egg. It was originally
cultivated in ancient China, where it was known as the Chinese
gooseberry. It was taken to New Zealand in the early 1900s and renamed
after their national treasure, the kiwi bird, which, interestingly, is a
fuzzy brown bird that does not actually fly.
The kiwi is technically a berry, is normally about 3 inches long and
weighs about 2.5 ounces. When it is harvested, the pickers wear cotton
gloves to make sure that the fruit is not damaged. Inside it is a
symmetrical combination of dark green fruit, and black seeds. The
conversion of starch into sugar keeps on going after harvest so it keeps
getting riper and riper.
When you are choosing a kiwi, look for firm, unblemished fruit. Size
doesn't matter. If it is ripe, the outside of the fruit should give way
to slight pressure. If it doesn't give a little, it isn't ready to eat.
You can speed up the ripening process by putting it in a vented plastic
bag with an apple or a banana and leaving it out on the kitchen counter.
One tiny Kiwi has less then 50 calories - A great source of Vitamin E,
folate (B vitamin) and magnesium... The kiwi also contains lutein, a
phytochemical found in green plant foods that scientists say reduces the
risk of cancer, heart disease and macular degeneration, which is
creating epidemic proportion of blindness in the over 40 generation.
An interesting property of kiwi is an enzyme called actinidin that turns
this fruit into an excellent meat tenderizer. Just puree fresh kiwi and
use it as a marinade for beef, poultry or pork. Let it stand about 30
minutes before cooking. Or, if you want to tenderize the meat without
flavoring it, you can just cut the fruit in half and rub it over the
meat before cooking.
Because of this enzyme, you cannot use kiwi in foods like gelatin unless
you poach it very briefly to deactivate the enzyme. It must also be
briefly poached before using it with any dairy products like ice cream
or frozen yogurt because otherwise it will impart a strange flavor, but
not dangerous to your health.
When Rutgers University did a testing of fruits and their nutrient
contents Kiwi was the hands down winner with the highest nutrient
content.

Study Links Antibiotics and Breast Cancer

CHICAGO (AP) - A study linking antibiotics with breast cancer doesn't
prove that they cause the disease, but should prompt women to make sure
they don't use the drugs inappropriately, researchers say.
In the new study on more than 10,000 women, those who used the most
antibiotics - who had more than 25 prescriptions, or who took the drugs
for at least 501 days - faced double the risk of developing breast
cancer over an average of about 17 years, compared with women who didn't
use the drugs.
"This is an important study, as it appears to be the first major work to
describe a possible association between antibiotic use and the increased
risk of cancer," said Jeanne Calle, the American Cancer Society's
director of analytical epidemiology.
But Calle said additional research is needed to determine if the results
are valid.
The authors agreed and said it could have been the diseases women used
antibiotics to treat - rather than the drugs themselves - that increased
breast cancer risk.
Also, since antibiotics are widely used to treat a variety of common
infections caused by bacteria, including strep throat, some pneumonias
and many gastrointestinal infections, it may be that women who never
took the drugs were unusually healthy and therefore unusually resistant
to cancer, the researchers said.
"It's very premature for people to stop taking antibiotics when they're
needed," said lead author Christine Velicer, a researcher at Group
Health Cooperative, a large nonprofit health plan in western Washington.
"Antibiotics have a substantial public health benefit."
But the drugs, which treat only bacterial ailments, are often
inappropriately used for colds and other illnesses caused by viruses,
and the authors said women should use antibiotics only when they've
discussed with their doctors whether the drugs are the most appropriate
treatment for their ailments.
The results appear in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical
Association and were released Monday.
The study involved 2,266 women 20 and older who developed invasive
breast cancer and who were compared with 7,953 women who did not get
breast cancer.
An increased breast cancer risk was found with increasing use of
antibiotics, with the greatest increased risk in women who took the
drugs for at least 501 days. Even women who had up to 25 prescriptions
over about 17 years faced an increased risk - a breast cancer rate about
1.5 times higher than nonusers.
An increased breast cancer risk was found for all types of antibiotics,
including penicillins.
A few theories might explain how antibiotics would lead to breast
cancer, Velicer said. The medications' effects on intestinal bacteria
could change the body's immune system or how the body metabolizes foods
that protect against cancer, she said.
An JAMA editorial says the theorized link is potentially worrisome,
since antibiotics are so commonly used - and misused.
But more research is needed before the drugs can be implicated, said
editorial authors Dr. Roberta Ness and Jane Cauley of the University of
Pittsburgh.

Pollution Is Blamed for Thinner Air at Edge of
Atmosphere

Scientists say they have found strong new evidence that carbon dioxide,
the main smokestack and tailpipe emission linked to global warming, is
cooling and shrinking the atmosphere's outermost layers in ways that
could aid as well as endanger space activities.
The average density of the air in the region more than 60 miles up ?
just a trillionth of that near the surface ? has dropped 10 percent over
the last 36 years, and it could decline by a total of 50 percent by the
end of the century, scientists at the Naval Research Laboratory in
Washington report.
The effect had long been predicted, but observations showing that it is
occurring have been scant.
Satellites, less affected by friction with the outer atmosphere, should
be able to stay aloft longer but may be in more danger from collisions
with orbiting debris, which would also last longer, the scientists said.
The only logical cause for the contraction and cooling is the rising
level of carbon dioxide, the researchers said. The other possible
influences, including variations in the sun, have been accounted for,
said Dr. John T. Emmert, a George Mason University researcher working at
the Navy lab, who is the lead author of a paper in the current Journal
of Geophysical Research ? Space Physics.
