Greetings and thank your for subscribing!
Read "Health Today's" article and see why I'm
upset and angry at our so-called health leaders! It amazes me that a
dozen people die from a natural alternative and is removed it from the
market without researching it , which many scientists say is safe when
taken sensibly. Yet 125,000 plus deaths have definitely been contributed
to taking this one arthritis prescription but it's okay to leave on the
market? When research in both drug industry and independent scientists
say it kills... Something is definitely wrong with that
scenario!!! Just because "the side effects aren't unique to its product"
(meaning many more are on the market that does the same thing) gives
them the right to bring it back... What kind of stinking attitude is
that and what happened to the FDA that is supposed to protect and serve
mankind? Oh, I forgot the board members watching out for us who
made this ruling is made up of drug industry presidents, board members,
CEO's and COO's, except for one... Silly of me to ask such a question!
I'm hoping the hilarity of Today's Health tip
can over ride the damage from the anger I feel toward the stupid
decisions of our health leaders! Read and make your decision...

EPA Sets Exposure Limit for Fuel Pollutant
Feb 19, 2005
By JOHN HEILPRIN
WASHINGTON (AP) - The government on Friday issued its first safety
standard for perchlorate, a toxic chemical used in rocket fuel and
explosives and blamed for widespread contamination of drinking water
near military sites.
The Environmental Protection Agency's new limit for what it considers a
safe exposure level will be used in guiding Superfund cleanups and
determining whether the agency should go a step further and regulate
perchlorate as a drinking water contaminant.
The limit, which translates to 24.5 parts per billion in drinking water,
is the same level recommended by the National Academy of Sciences in
January but higher than what EPA proposed two years ago.
Perchlorate is a chemical found in nature, but the academy said its
presence in the environment is mainly from its use in rocket fuels,
fireworks and explosives. It has been linked to thyroid ailments, and is
considered particularly dangerous to children.
"This reference dose is protective for all populations including the
most sensitive," EPA spokeswoman Cynthia Bergman said.
The EPA issued a preliminary recommendation two years ago for an
exposure level that translated into 1 part per billion. The Pentagon had
criticized that EPA standard as too stringent.
The Food and Drug Administration two years ago began testing for
perchlorate in food and bottled water. It was found in four types of
lettuce - iceberg, romaine, green leaf and red leaf - grown mostly in
Arizona and California but also in New Jersey, Texas and Florida. It
also was found in different types of milk in numerous states, but hardly
at all in bottled water.
Perchlorate has been found in drinking water in 35 states, and
environmentalists want EPA to use its exposure level to issue federal
drinking water standards for the chemical.
"The question now," said Renee Sharp, an analyst for the Environmental
Working Group, a research and advocacy organization, "is whether the
agency will protect all Americans, including children, from rocket fuel
in drinking water, or cave to pressure from defense contractors who have
polluted our drinking water." Her group has estimated that more than 20
million people in the United States drink water contaminated with
perchlorate.
Erik Olson, an attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council, an
environmental group, said the exposure level the EPA considers safe is
too lenient for protecting those most vulnerable - infants and pregnant
women.
If used as a benchmark for cleaning up Superfund and military sites,
Olson said, the standard "really puts potentially hundreds of thousands
if not millions at risk."
States and local governments have been trying to get defense contractors
and the Pentagon to pay for the huge cleanup costs of removing the
chemical from groundwater. California and Massachusetts have proposed
limits on perchlorate contamination far more restrictive than the level
EPA chose.
But even with its own standard, California could still have higher
levels of perchlorate contamination from the Colorado River that comes
from a former rocket fuel plant in Nevada.

Stevia has been used as a
traditional remedy for diabetes and gum disease among the indigenous
people of Paraguay and other South American countries for over
1,500-recorded years. Preliminary scientific evidence by independent
researchers shows stevia may indeed improve the function of cells in the
pancreas required for insulin production, and may also improve glucose
tolerance in people with diabetes. But according to the generations of
people who have used stevia as a part of their daily diet, stevia has
been proven to regulate blood sugar and has been used for decades as a
treatment for diabetes and gum disease.
Unlike other sweeteners, stevia
has been reported to possess anti-viral activity. Anecdotal evidence
shows stevia possesses blood pressure lowering properties and may be a
useful treatment for hypertension.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Fuzzy Edible Little Egg Shaped Yang Tao!
These days it's hard to find any food with enough
nutrients to really help us without eating a truck load, but this one
small fuzzy is the highest nutrient value fruit and can help keep your
nutrient rich…
A tiny fruit with a great texture and taste and goes with just about
anything. Kiwi, also called Chinese gooseberry and yang tao for its
edible fruit. The small, oval fruit has a thin brownish-green skin with
a fuzzy unedible surface. The flesh, which is a distinctive attractive
green, with tiny purplish seeds surrounding a white core, may be eaten
raw or cooked.
History: Known as the Chinese gooseberry,
originated and began in the Chang Kiang Valley of China. When taken to
New Zealand in 1906 was renamed after their national treasure, the kiwi
bird, which, interestingly, is a fuzzy brown bird that does not actually
fly. Considered a delicacy by the great Khans who relished the fruit's
brilliant flavor and emerald-green color. Knowledge of the fruit
expanded to other countries in the mid 1800s to 1900s.
A collector for the Royal Horticultural Society of
Britain send samples home in 1847, and another send seeds to England in
1900. Plants were first exported from China to the United States in
1904. Kiwifruit is available worldwide today and is produced in New
Zealand, the United States, Italy, Japan, France, Greece, Spain,
Australia, and Chile.
The kiwi is technically a berry, is normally about
3 inches long and weighs about 2.5 ounces. When it is harvested, the
pickers wear cotton gloves to make sure that the fruit is not damaged.
Inside it is a symmetrical combination of dark green fruit, and black
seeds. The conversion of starch into sugar keeps on going after harvest
so it keeps getting riper and riper.
A study conducted at Rutgers University evaluated
the nutritional value of fruits to determine--ounce for ounce--which
provides the most nutrition. The findings, published in the October 1997
issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, ranked
popular fruits on the basis of the amount of the daily value they
provide per 100 grams of fruits. At the top of the list was kiwifruit.
When you are choosing a kiwi, look for firm,
unblemished fruit. Size doesn't matter. If it is ripe, the outside of
the fruit should give way to slight pressure. If it doesn't give a
little, it isn't ready to eat. You can speed up the ripening process by
putting it in a vented plastic bag with an apple or a banana and leaving
it out on the kitchen counter.
One tiny Kiwi has less then 50 calories - is the most nutrient dense
of all the major fruits.
Low in fat is Sodium-free, Cholesterol-free, High
in fiber and High in vitamin C. A great source of Vitamin E, folate (B
vitamin), potassium and magnesium... The kiwi also contains lutein, a
phytochemical found in green plant foods that scientists say reduces the
risk of cancer, heart disease and macular degeneration, which is
creating epidemic proportion of blindness in the over 40 generation.
Research conducted by the University of Oslo in
Norway reveals that consuming two to three kiwifruit per day can work to
thin blood, reduce clotting and lower fat in the blood that can cause
blockage, without negatively affecting cholesterol levels. Like aspirin,
eating two kiwifruit a day promotes heart health. In short, kiwifruit
consumption has similar effects to the daily dosage of aspirin
recommended by physicians to improve heart health.
Findings of a 2003 study conducted by the
internationally renowned Rowett Research Institute in the United Kingdom
found that eating kiwifruit daily can provide substantial protection
against the kind of DNA damage that may cause cancer.
Another interesting property of kiwi is an enzyme called actinidin that
turns this fruit into an excellent meat tenderizer. Just puree fresh
kiwi and use it as a marinade for beef, poultry or pork. Let it stand
about 30 minutes before cooking. Or, if you want to tenderize the meat
without flavoring it, you can just cut the fruit in half and rub it over
the meat before cooking. Because of this enzyme, you cannot use kiwi in
foods like gelatin unless you poach it very briefly to deactivate the
enzyme. It must also be briefly poached before using it with any dairy
products like ice cream or frozen yogurt because otherwise it will
impart a strange flavor, but not dangerous to your health.
Due to California kiwifruit's late fall harvest,
fresh kiwifruit is available to U.S. and Canadian consumers during the
winter months, an uncommon time for the "homegrown" fresh fruits. With
proper storage and handling, California kiwifruit is available for up to
eight months - from October through May.
Our favorite way of eating Kiwi is fresh and raw.
There are recipes using Kiwi cooked but I have never tried them so I
cannot recommend one…
Eat and enjoy health!

Painkiller Vioxx Might Return to Sale
Feb 18, 2005
By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID
WASHINGTON (AP) - The painkiller Vioxx, pulled from the market
last fall because of reported heart problems and strokes in
users, could come back on sale if federal regulators conclude it
and similar drugs have benefits that balance the risks.
Dr. Peter S. Kim, president of Merck Research Laboratories, told
a joint meeting of two Food and Drug Administration advisory
committees that new studies indicate the side effects aren't
unique to its product.
The advisory panels were concluding a three-day meeting Friday
in which they have been assessing drugs known as Cox-2
inhibitors, which also include Pfizer Inc. (PFE)'s Celebrex and
Bextra, to determine whether they are all risky and, if so,
whether they have balancing benefits.
All three drugs have been approved for sale by the government.
The committees' recommendations could be the first steps toward
rescinding those approvals or taking other actions ranging from
tougher label warnings to extensive new safety studies of the
drugs.
Dr. Robert Temple, director of medical policy for the FDA's
Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, told the committees on
Friday that "the idea of doing a large new study has weight."
"There are some data we'd all like to have, that we don't have,"
Temple said, including the blood pressure and other effects of
the various drugs.
He said a new study might include more than just the Cox-2
drugs, possibly adding such widely used painkillers as
ibuprofen, naproxen and diclofenac.
"My main point is that there is a very important need for more
information on many of these drugs," Temple said.
On Thursday, meeting chairman Alistair J.J. Wood of Vanderbilt
University Medical School asked whether the drugs could win
approval today, considering the studies that have come to light
in recent months.
Kim indicated a positive assessment by the committees might lead
Merck to consider bringing Vioxx back onto the market.
If the committees and the FDA conclude that the benefits of this
class of drugs outweigh the risks for some patients, "then we
would have to consider the implications of these new data" for
Vioxx, Kim said.
Asked if he meant the company would consider returning Vioxx to
the market, Kim said: "There are unique benefits to Vioxx. The
science has progressed and we need to take that science into
consideration."
While the committees heard evidence that all drugs in the group
can increase the risk of heart attacks, irregular heart beat and
strokes, it did note that Vioxx seemed to have more such reports
than the other drugs.
On the other hand, Kim pointed out that Vioxx is the only one of
the drugs approved for people with certain allergies and did
better at preventing the stomach and intestinal problems often
caused by over-the-counter painkillers.
Committee members will be asked their opinion on whether all the
drugs pose a problem and what should be done. Their
recommendations could include increasing warnings, seeking more
studies, limiting who can use the drugs or how long they can be
used or even ordering one or more off the market.
The evidence is suggestive that there is something going on with
each of these drugs, but it is not conclusive, commented Thomas
Fleming, chairman of the department of biostatistics at the
University of Washington.
Dr. Steven Abramson, chairman of the division of rheumatology at
the New York University School of Medicine, said it's possible
the problems stem from the ability of these drugs to hamper the
Cox-2 enzyme. But he also suggested a study to examine whether
similar problems arise from other painkillers, such as
ibuprofen.
Dr. Peter A. Gross, chairman of internal medicine at the
Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey, worried that
if the committee did conclude the heart problems were related to
the Cox-2 action, patients would all switch to older drugs that
can cause ulcers and bleeding problems.

Final say from our lovely government bureaucracy on Friday
2/18/05; "Pain Killer Vioxx WILL RETURN to market!"
The panel voted 31-1 to keep Celebrex on sale and 17-13 with two
abstaining for Bextra. Government advisers said Friday,
concluding that benefits to suffering patients outweigh the
dangers.
The advisers concluded that Vioxx, which its maker Merck & Co. (MRK)
pulled off the market last fall, poses the greatest risk and
that Celebrex has the fewest side effects.
They suggested that the prescription products carry strong
warnings and recommended a long-term study to gain more
understanding about the drugs.

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~~^~^~^
Britain Criticizes U.S. Climate Record
Feb 18, 2005
By LEYLA LINTON
UNITED NATIONS (AP) - In another jab at its closest ally, Britain
criticized U.S. environmental policy again on Thursday, urging the Bush
administration to place climate change high on its agenda.
At a U.N. event marking the entry into force of the Kyoto accord on
global warming, Britain's ambassador to the United Nations, Sir Emyr
Jones Parry, said it was "important that climate change rises up the US
agenda."
He called for a "strong U.S. contribution" to international talks on
cutting gas emissions beyond the targets set by the Kyoto agreement. "We
need much more effort. The post-Kyoto regime will require serious,
concerted international commitment," he said.
The pact, which took effect Wednesday, limits emissions of carbon
dioxide and other gases blamed for rising world temperatures, melting
glaciers and rising oceans.
The United States has refused to ratify the agreement, saying the pact
would harm the U.S. economy.
"Global climate policy, or any environmental initiative, cannot be
considered in isolation of economic and energy interests," Republican
Senator Chuck Hagel told a conference sponsored by the United Nations
Foundation.
Jones Parry suggested U.S. concern about economic impact was unfounded,
saying there was "no need for a trade-off" between environmental
protection and economic growth. "Emissions reduction can be achieved
without serious economic cost," he said.
Washington has also criticized the Kyoto agreement for a lack of
restrictions on emissions by emerging economies such as China and India.
"Any reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by the United States and
other developed countries will be eclipsed by emissions from developing
nations, such as China, which will soon be the world's largest emitter
of manmade greenhouse gases," Hagel said.
Britain has made climate change a top priority this year for its
presidency of the G8 group of the world's wealthy nations, and its
presidency of the European Union.
Jones Parry called global warming an "urgent problem," noting that the
five hottest years on record have occurred since 1997.
He singled out the United States as a major polluter, saying that it has
only 4 percent of the world's population, but produces 20 percent of
global emissions.
"It consumes almost a quarter of the world's energy, more than China,
Russia and Japan combined," he said, adding that the average U.S.
citizen produces twice as much carbon per year as a British or Japanese
counterpart.
Hagel agreed that the United States must remain engaged in international
initiatives to reduce manmade greenhouse gas emissions.
This week, he introduced legislation that would use the amount of carbon
emitted relative to economic output as the baseline for U.S. global
climate policy.
