Did you become as angry as I did when I read the news column that I've passed on to you in Something To Think About column... Doesn't anyone care about people? I thought medicine was supposed to be for healing people not using them as a guinea pig but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore... You will never know if you were the guinea pig either... What happened to asking consent before treating? Hopefully I will never have an accident that will require treatment with their "blood."

Artificial Blood Tested Without Consent

CHICAGO (AP) - Paramedics are testing an experimental blood substitute on severely injured patients without their consent in an unusual study under way or proposed at 20 hospitals around the country.

The study was launched last month in Denver and follows similar research that was halted in 1998, when more than 20 patients died after getting a different experimental blood substitute.

Supporters say the current product, PolyHeme, made by Northfield Laboratories of Evanston, Ill., is safer and could save many of the nearly 100,000 people who die of bleeding injuries each year nationwide.

"It could revolutionize how we take care of resuscitation in the United States and across the world," said lead investigator Dr. Ernest Moore, chief of trauma surgery at Denver Health Medical Center.

 The research is part of a race to find what doctors call the holy grail of emergency medicine: a product that works like human blood to save victims of car crashes, shootings or other trauma but could be carried in ambulances and given to people of any blood type.

Reduce the Risk of Serious Foot Injury from Diabetic Infections

Even when diabetes is under control, variations in blood sugar
can provide diabetic foot pain and affect the feet in several
other ways. Diabetes creates a condition known as "peripheral
neuropathy" (PN). PN produces symptoms ranging from a burning,
tingling, or numb feeling, mild or severe diabetic foot pain,
or even a complete loss of feeling in the feet.

Because of the diminished tactile senses in the feet, a diabetic
is more susceptible to infections, fractures which do not heal
properly, diabetic foot pain, and severe bone and joint disease
which changes the actual shape of the foot.

Sugar levels also cause a condition known as peripheral vascular
disease (P.V.D.). This disease causes a decrease in blood,
nutrients and oxygen that are usually carried to the skin, fat,
muscles, joints, and bones of the feet. This deficiency results
in the feet not being able to respond to injuries ranging from
small abrasions, broken bones, and normal foot fatigue.

For a diabetic, any injury to the foot, no matter how slight,
can cause diabetic foot pain and other severe repercussions.
You can reduce the risk of serious foot injury by following
these simple steps:

1. Thoroughly examine your feet every day including the tops,
   bottoms, and between your toes. Look for inflamed areas,
   cuts, peeling and breaks in the skin, rashes, and swelling.

2. Regularly examine and press upon your toe nails to check if
   there are any signs of diabetic foot pain, or if they are
   ingrown.

3. Check both feet to see if they feel like they are both the
   same temperature and that they are not significantly colder
   than the rest of the body.

4. Check to ensure that you have good feeling in both feet by
   moving your finger firmly down both the tops and bottom of
   your feet from toe to heal. Notify your Doctor at once if
   performing this test produces diabetic foot pain.

5. Always wear properly fitted shoes and only buy shoes made of
   a soft upper material. Make sure that the area where your
   toes go is deep and wide to reduce toe pressure. Wear low
   heals, no higher than 3/4 of an inch, whether you are male
   or female.

6. Wear seamless socks, made of a natural fiber that allows
   your feet to breathe, and never go barefoot.

7. Wash your feet daily, with soap and warm water. Be sure to
   dry them thoroughly especially between the toes.

8. Use a toenail clipper that is wide enough to cut your nails
   straight across. Do not dig into the corners of your toe
   nails and be very careful not to cut or puncture your skin.

9. Rub in a good quality moisturizing cream into your feet,
   before you go to bed, to prevent dry skin and cracks.

10.Do not use chemical corn and callus removers that contain
   acid. This can burn and damage your sensitive skin and lead
   to diabetic foot pain and other problems.

You can develop a healthy foot care habit with very little
effort. Take care of your feet and they will take care of you.

Second Largest Nutrient Containing Fruit is;
 
Rutgers University study on fruits and their nutrient values found that the Papaya came in second on their list.
 
The papaya has a reputation as the "fruit of the angels" given that name by Christopher Columbus. Considered an exotic fruit, they can now be found in markets throughout the year. Although there is a bit of a seasonal peak in early summer and fall, papaya trees produce fruit year round.
 
Papayas are spherical or pear-shaped fruits. Their edible flesh is a rich orange color with either yellow or pink hues. Inside the inner cavity of the fruit is black, round seeds covered in a gelatinous-like substance. Papaya's seeds are edible, although their peppery flavor is somewhat bitter. The fruit, as well as the other parts of the papaya tree, contain papain, an enzyme that helps digest proteins. This enzyme is especially concentrated in the fruit when it is unripe. Papain is extracted to make digestive enzyme dietary supplements.
 
Is not on the list of 20 foods that most frequently contain pesticide residue or in the allergy realm of foods.

Since this isn't a fruit that is one of the popularly consumed fruits thought I would give you some ideas of how to serve papaya...
 
Papayas can be used many different ways. They can be eaten as is, added to a fruit salad or to a host of different recipes.
 
One of the easiest and most natural ways to eat papaya is; After washing the fruit, cut it lengthwise, scoop out the seeds and then eat it with a spoon. For a little extra zest, you can squeeze lemon or lime juice on top. Very sweet and tasty!
 
To cut papaya into smaller pieces for fruit salad or recipes, first peel it with a paring knife and then cut into desire size and shape. You can also use a melon baller to scoop out the fruit of a halved papaya. If you are adding it to a fruit salad, you should do so just before serving as it tends to cause the other fruits to become very soft.
 
While most people discard the big black seeds, they are actually edible and have a delightful peppery flavor. They can be chewed whole or blended into a creamy salad dressing, giving it a peppery flavor.
 
Mix diced papaya, cilantro, jalapeno peppers and ginger together to make a unique salsa that goes great with shrimp, scallops and halibut.
 
Sprinkle papaya with fresh lime juice and enjoy as is or Slice a small papaya lengthwise and fill with fruit salad. Another option, combine papaya, strawberries and yogurt in a blender for a cold soup treat.

Any way you want to eat a papaya your body will appreciate it!

E-Mail Used to Alert of STD Exposure

ATLANTA (AP) - Fighting fire with fire, public health officials are using e-mail to try to stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases among people who meet through Internet chat rooms and Web sites.

In a pilot program in Los Angeles County, health officials use e-mail and the Internet to notify the sex partners of people who had been diagnosed with STDS.

San Francisco's Health Department is believed to be the only other agency to use e-mail in this way, said Dr. Pragna Patel of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which released a case study Thursday on the Los Angeles County project.

"Using e-mail has been a helpful and good alternative when you have otherwise anonymous sex partners," Patel said. "More and more the Internet is serving as a place to meet sex partners and engage in risky behavior."

Tracking STD cases among people who have met in chat rooms is difficult because people often take part anonymously. Health officials often do not have names, addresses or other information to work with.

In other parts of the country, health officials post prevention messages on Web sites used by gay and bisexual men to meet each other. But e-mail is not used. Instead, health officials use regular mail or contact people in person to tell them that they may have been exposed.

"I think when we are in a war to save life then we have to use any means necessary to get the means out," said Sandra Singleton McDonald, who runs an Atlanta AIDS program and is on the President's Advisory Committee on HIV and AIDS.

In Los Angeles, the need to curb STDs and promote prevention is crucial: The county recently reported its first increase in new AIDS cases in a decade.

The number of cases rose a half-percent from 1,555 to 1,562 between 2001 and 2002, according to preliminary figures from the county Department of Health Services. The increase was entirely among men, whose cases jumped by 1.6 percent. The number of new cases reported among women declined.

In addition, the county reported that nearly a quarter of 759 gay and bisexual men who had syphilis had used the Internet to meet sex partners between 2001 and 2003.

In the case study, health officials described a man diagnosed with syphilis in 2002 who said he had 134 male sex partners in a six-month period. County officials sent e-mails to 111 of the partners to alert them that they may have been exposed to an STD. A quarter of those people contacted the health department.

In a second case, a 31-year-old man tested positive for syphilis last March and provided the county with 16 e-mail addresses of recent partners. Nearly half of the partners made arrangements with health officials to be tested.
