The sun is back, at least for a short while as more rain and snow flurries are predicted, looks like Mother Nature and Old Man Winter are teaming up, but we need it in the worst way so I am not complaining but enjoying it!

 Today is a eclectic group in items and articles that I hope will benefit your knowledge and health. My goal is to help disseminate information that will improve, teach or just plain add smarts to your vocabulary!

This is a very exasperating day as I just discovered almost 3,000 subscriber names simply disappeared from my list in less then 24 hours. I know it's impossible for that many to unsubscribe so it has to be a flaw in the service, so if you receive this ezine consider yourself lucky. I have no idea how to find those emails that disappeared and my service says it can't happen. Having published this ezine for six years I know that many cannot drop off the face of the earth unless a system failure occurred. Another day of this nightmare that seems to go on and on! I'm taking my Tolerance formula in order to counteract the stress damage that is surely trying to happen in this old woman's body with so many things going wrong over the last month! I would enlist your prayers as well that I get to an even keel SOON!!! Thank you in advance...

Bill forces shots on all children

Homeschoolers fight state legislation that criminalizes parents who object

West Virginia homeschooling families and others were scheduled to stage two rallies today to protest a proposed bill that would require every child in the state to have a record of compulsory immunizations.

The legislation, Senate Bill 439, stipulates "any parent or guardian who refuses to permit his or her child to be immunized" would face a criminal charge.

The rallies, sponsored by West Virginians for Vaccination Exemption, were scheduled to take place at the state Capitol in Charleston and outside the Marion County Courthouse in Fairmont.

"If passed, this bill will turn all West Virginian parents who choose not to vaccinate for religious reasons into criminals or force them to move to another state," Helen Tucker, co-founder of WVVE and state chair of the Libertarian Party of West Virginia, said in a statement.

Unlike 48 other states, West Virginia currently does not have a provision for a religious or philosophical exemption. However, families can assert they have sufficient medical reason for not immunizing a child, which works, in effect, like an exemption. The new bill would do away with that right.

The legislation, which is sponsored by Sen. Joseph M. Minard and Sen. Roman Prezioso, both Democrats, also adds hepatitis B and chickenpox vaccines to the list of mandatory shots. WVVE says the chickenpox vaccine is manufactured with human cell cultures obtained from abortions and is objectionable to many parents for religious reasons.

Reads the bill, in part: "The state has a compelling interest in protecting the health of all citizens of this state, especially our children. With vaccines widely available to reduce or prevent the incidence of disease, the state bureau for public health has determined that the point of school entry is the best time to confirm each child's record of compulsory immunization from the diseases enumerated in subsection (c) of this section."

The bill establishes a fine of between $100 and $500 for any parent who refuses to show the state a valid immunization record for his or her child.

Road Salt may be Contaminating Your Drinking Water

Those of us living in areas hit by bad winter weather are quite familiar with the large plows and salt spreaders that help keep our roads safe for travel. Unfortunately, there are some serious downsides to the heavy use of road salts and de-icing chemicals in the winter months.

In addition to contributing to weakening the road asphalt by forming cracks and potholes AND causing our vehicles to rust prematurely, the heavy use of road salts during the winter months are also harming the surrounding environment.

Damage to the nearby soil, vegetation, birds and to other wildlife is well documented. Even worse, the chemicals in road salts are finding their way into our water sources.

Road salt compounds can contaminate lakes, ponds, rivers, streams and water reservoirs by direct runoff or by moving through the soil and into groundwater. As sodium and chloride levels increase in the winter months, they can affect quality of roadside water sources and render the water undrinkable.

Other substances in road salts and de-icers include chemicals such as ferrocyanide, chloride and other metals that are measured in parts-per-billion. Medical studies also suggest that increased sodium intake due to high levels in food and drinking water may contribute to hypertension in humans.

Some states are attempting to tackle the problem head-on. Massachusetts has a Salt Remediation Program, which involves replacing both private and public ground-water supply wells that have been contaminated with road salt and de-icing materials.

But these days, even the southern regions of the country are increasingly hammered by snow and ice storms ever year. And road salts are just one potential problem that can affect the quality of your water supply.

Rutgers University study on fruits and their nutrient values found that the Papaya came in second on their list.
 
The papaya has a reputation as the "fruit of the angels" given that name by Christopher Columbus. Considered an exotic fruit, they can now be found in markets throughout the year. Although there is a bit of a seasonal peak in early summer and fall, papaya trees produce fruit year round.
 
Papayas are spherical or pear-shaped fruits. Their edible flesh is a rich orange color with either yellow or pink hues. Inside the inner cavity of the fruit is black, round seeds covered in a gelatinous-like substance. Papaya's seeds are edible, although their peppery flavor is somewhat bitter. The fruit, as well as the other parts of the papaya tree, contain papain, an enzyme that helps digest proteins. This enzyme is especially concentrated in the fruit when it is unripe. Papain is extracted to make digestive enzyme dietary supplements.
 
Is not on the list of 20 foods that most frequently contain pesticide residue or in the allergy realm of foods.

Since this isn't a fruit that is one of the popularly consumed fruits thought I would give you some ideas of how to serve papaya...
 
Papayas can be used many different ways. They can be eaten as is, added to a fruit salad or to a host of different recipes.
 
One of the easiest and most natural ways to eat papaya is; After washing the fruit, cut it lengthwise, scoop out the seeds and then eat it with a spoon. For a little extra zest, you can squeeze lemon or lime juice on top. Very sweet and tasty!
 
To cut papaya into smaller pieces for fruit salad or recipes, first peel it with a paring knife and then cut into desire size and shape. You can also use a melon baller to scoop out the fruit of a halved papaya. If you are adding it to a fruit salad, you should do so just before serving as it tends to cause the other fruits to become very soft.
 
While most people discard the big black seeds, they are actually edible and have a delightful peppery flavor. They can be chewed whole or blended into a creamy salad dressing, giving it a peppery flavor.
 
Mix diced papaya, cilantro, jalapeno peppers and ginger together to make a unique salsa that goes great with shrimp, scallops and halibut.
 
Sprinkle papaya with fresh lime juice and enjoy as is or Slice a small papaya lengthwise and fill with fruit salad. Another option, combine papaya, strawberries and yogurt in a blender for a cold soup treat.

Any way you want to eat a papaya your body will appreciate it!

Dying of Old Age: An Old Wives' Tale?

Many people die at an advanced age--but does that mean that old age kills? Researchers are beginning to think that time can be toxic because aging makes us more vulnerable to disease.

Countless grandparents have "died of old age." But doctors remain woefully unable to explain how the advanced years kill poor Gram. In many cases, they attribute an elderly person's death to old age because no other obvious explanation emerges, says Tim Koelmeyer, a pathologist at Auckland University School of Medicine in New Zealand. As researchers look more closely at the problem, they're beginning to question whether old age itself is ever fatal. The answer is crucial: If scientists hope to extend human longevity, they'll need to pinpoint the factors that curb it. But without policies that encourage doctors to invest energy in chasing down the true cause of death in the very old, researchers won't know which diseases to focus on as they search for treatments that will lead to longer and healthier lives.

"There is certainly a fixed limit to the human life span as far as we can tell," says Linda Fried, a gerontologist at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland. Still, the human body doesn't just grind to a halt after it reaches a certain age. In many cases, elderly deaths are pinned on old age because no one looked very hard for the true cause, says Andrea Berzlanovich, a forensic pathologist at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Vienna. Berzlanovich has autopsied scores of people who died after age 80, and her work has led her to the conclusion that old age rarely, if ever, explains death. She recently submitted for publication a study in which she autopsied 40 centenarians who died at home. "They looked healthy and they seemed to be healthy," says Berzlanovich. "But they were not. We found disease in every case." Nearly 70% had cardiovascular problems. Others showed signs of respiratory illnesses.

In a separate study of 319 people who had died at age 90 or older, Koelmeyer showed that the very old are often felled by infection or by tears or ruptures in the aorta, the major vessel that moves blood from the heart. Although both Koelmeyer and Berzlanovich found that the cause of death in the elderly is identifiable--if one looks--they also found that more than one factor often triggers death. About 19% of the deaths in Koelmeyer's study had multiple causes, and Berzlanovich says that many of her "healthy" centenarians showed signs of numerous health problems.

Even if disease is ultimately to blame for a death, it's often preceded by a downward spiral that renders a person particularly vulnerable. Researchers are beginning to take a closer look at how this happens, and "One of the big clues is coming from new science on frailty," says Fried. Frailty is a condition associated with aging whose symptoms include weight loss, decreased muscle mass and strength, weakness, lack of energy, and reduced motor performance. The condition seems to spring from a general weakening of the body, including the skeletal, muscular, blood, and neuroendocrine systems. When people become frail, their response to psychological and physical stressors such as illness, injury, or anxiety falters, says Fried: "[Frailty] seems to be a strong predictor of who is going to die in [the] short term." The syndrome appears to be progressive, and if researchers can learn to identify its early stages, they might be able to find ways to reverse it before it triggers the fatal downward slide, she says.

But doctors don't have a very good track record in diagnosing even textbook diseases in the elderly--much less something as nebulous as frailty. Despite newfangled tests and expanded scientific knowledge, doctors misdiagnose their patients at roughly the same rate they did 100 years ago. Berzlanovich, who has conducted hundreds of autopsies in her career, estimates that doctors made an incorrect diagnosis in 30% to 50% of the patients she has autopsied. Her conclusion agrees with others: A 1995 review concluded that autopsies reveal unexpected major findings in up to 33% of cases. One reason that cause of death might be misdiagnosed in older folks is that advanced age can modify a disease's presentation, says Koelmeyer. The elderly often live with multiple chronic illnesses, which together can weave a complicated web of symptoms that is hard to untangle.

What's more, autopsies are rarely done on the very old, which makes it difficult for doctors to know the true cause of death or to learn from their mistakes. In 1983, the editors of the Journal of the American Medical Association declared war on the "nonautopsy," arguing that the procedure is vital to the fight to cut diagnostic errors. But so far they seem to be losing. In the 20 years since then, autopsy rates have hardly budged. Koelmeyer says that situation needs to change: "If nothing else, postmortem examination is quality control in medicine."

If autopsies were more common, Berzlanovich says that fewer deaths would be attributed to old age. Although the idea that grandma died of old age might appeal to many families, finding out her real cause of death might yield clues about how all of us could live longer.
