Today was just another day in the confusion with my ezine list server problems. Dropped a thousand subscribers right in front of my eyes... I'm looking for a reliable ezine service. If you have a suggestion mailto:olhme@commspeed.net?subject=EzineService

Even with all the distractions I still find time to look into the news going around regarding health issues and some of them scare me to death.

One man taking the country to court to have the right to live when he becomes unable to make that decision and is on life support. I have a living will for that purpose, but sounds like he already lost his ability to make sensible decisions as the group behind him is out to take away the doctors decision as to whether a person is living life or is a body existing with machines. If the courts rule in his favor we can expect doctors to become even more fearful and lose more ability to treat us in a sensible manner for fear of a law suit from family. You can bet that will happen.

A law, i published the article on Wednesday, that takes away a parents right to decide if their child(ren) should be immunized. From looking at the group that pushed this law through it is my opinion that this is a veiled law to try and break up the large numbers of home schooling that is going on and has gained a reputation for existing to refuse immunizations. That's is a few parents reasoning, but for the most part home schooling is done to insure a child a better education and that is proving to be a very plausible reason with all the home schoolers winning the scholastic bees around the U.S. making the school systems look bad and taking money out of their pockets. Just my opinion!

Then there is GlaxoSmithKine drug company pushing for their drug Relenza to be used to treat the bird flu... Their reasoning can't possible be for our good, since Relenza has supposedly been shown to be affective with Influenza A & B viral infections, and in actuality even failed against that. Can we believe their marketing literature? NOT!

FDA Puts Hold on Mich. Infant Supplement

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) - Consumers are angry and the co-owners of a Macomb County company are frustrated over a federal ban on the production and distribution of their dietary supplement for infants.

The Food and Drug Administration on Jan. 23 warned consumers not to feed Better than Formula Ultra Infant Immune Booster 117 to their infants.

Although the product, sold over the Internet by NSP Research Nutrition of Mount Clemens, is labeled as a dietary supplement, it may in fact be an infant formula, the FDA said.

The term "Better than Formula" in the product name describes it as a substitute for, or alternative to, other infant formulas, the agency said.

 
The FDA doesn't approve dietary supplements before they are marketed to the public, but baby formula must be reviewed by the agency before it can be sold. The FDA will take action against dietary supplement products it considers unsafe or makes false and misleading claims.

The FDA sent agents and investigators to the Better Than Formula warehouse in Detroit to confiscate the product it still had in stock, NSP Research Nutrition co-owner Ron Kosloff said.

"We call it a dietary supplement and the FDA calls it a formula," Kosloff told The Detroit News for a Wednesday story. "The bottom line is, it hasn't hurt anybody and only helped people."

Kosloff and his partner in the venture, David Jantz, said they hope the FDA will review the product and advise them on how they can resume marketing it.

In the meantime, consumers like Kari Dixon feel like they're caught in the middle.

"I'm devastated that I can't get it for my baby anymore," said Dixon, who had been giving the product to her 7-week-old son, Ty. "It's outrageous."

The FDA said in issuing its warning that no illnesses or injuries associated with the product had been reported. But it said NSP Research Nutrition provided it with no assurances that the product would support growth of infants if used as an infant formula; contains nutrients essential for infants; or is made under good manufacturing practices.

Also, the label lists a number of ingredients that have not been evaluated for safe use in infant formula, the FDA said.

Jantz said the company sold about 300 cans of the product since it started marketing it last August. A can sells for $40 wholesale and contains 120 servings, or about a three-week supply, he said.

The FDA declined to comment on the case beyond the warning issued by Commissioner Mark McLellan in January.

"Based on what I've read about the case, it looks like the FDA is just doing its job," said Elaine Turner, associate professor of human nutrition with the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florida. "The product's name implies it's a replacement for formula, and the FDA is quicker to step in when a product is targeted at a vulnerable part of the population like infants."

Second Largest Nutrient Containing Fruit;
 
Rutgers University study on fruits and their nutrient values found that the Papaya came in second on their list.
 
The papaya has a reputation as the "fruit of the angels" given that name by Christopher Columbus. Considered an exotic fruit, they can now be found in markets throughout the year. Although there is a bit of a seasonal peak in early summer and fall, papaya trees produce fruit year round.
 
Papayas are spherical or pear-shaped fruits. Their edible flesh is a rich orange color with either yellow or pink hues. Inside the inner cavity of the fruit is black, round seeds covered in a gelatinous-like substance. Papaya's seeds are edible, although their peppery flavor is somewhat bitter. The fruit, as well as the other parts of the papaya tree, contain papain, an enzyme that helps digest proteins. This enzyme is especially concentrated in the fruit when it is unripe. Papain is extracted to make digestive enzyme dietary supplements.
 
Is not on the list of 20 foods that most frequently contain pesticide residue or in the allergy realm of foods.

Papayas can be used many different ways. They can be eaten as is, added to a fruit salad or to a host of different recipes.
 
One of the easiest and most natural ways to eat papaya is; After washing the fruit, cut it lengthwise, scoop out the seeds and then eat it with a spoon. For a little extra zest, you can squeeze lemon or lime juice on top. Very sweet and tasty!
 
To cut papaya into smaller pieces for fruit salad or recipes, first peel it with a paring knife and then cut into desire size and shape. You can also use a melon baller to scoop out the fruit of a halved papaya. If you are adding it to a fruit salad, you should do so just before serving as it tends to cause the other fruits to become very soft.
 
While most people discard the big black seeds, they are actually edible and have a delightful peppery flavor. They can be chewed whole or blended into a creamy salad dressing, giving it a peppery flavor.
 
Mix diced papaya, cilantro, jalapeno peppers and ginger together to make a unique salsa that goes great with shrimp, scallops and halibut.
 
Sprinkle papaya with fresh lime juice and enjoy as is or Slice a small papaya lengthwise and fill with fruit salad. Another option, combine papaya, strawberries and yogurt in a blender for a cold soup treat.

Any way you want to eat a papaya your body will appreciate it!

Internet pharmacies feel squeezed after Pfizer cross-border drug crackdown

WINNIPEG (CP) - Some Internet pharmacies cut off this month by one of the world's biggest drug companies are struggling to calm panicked American customers and find the supplies they need to stay in business.

"I think this is the biggest threat that we've faced," Jeff Uhl, a pharmacist and owner of Universal Drugstore in Winnipeg, said Thursday. "We're not going to be shutting our doors anytime soon, but do these things have the potential to affect business? Yes definitely. It's going to be stressful."

Last Friday, Uhl and several other online pharmacists received registered letters from Pfizer Canada alerting them they've been blacklisted and will no longer be allowed to buy the company's products.

It's the latest salvo in an escalating cross-border fight that has pitted health-care professionals and governments against each other and raised questions about profit margins and patient safety.

While several brand-name drug companies have tried to crack down on the Internet pharmacies by limiting their ability to purchase drugs for export, the pharmacies say Pfizer is the first to threaten wholesalers with being cut off from all Pfizer products if they sell them to online pharmacies.

The Canadian International Pharmacy Association says Pfizer's actions will create "distribution challenges" for many of its 130 members.

But executive director David MacKay said the pharmacies will rely on their strong network within Canada and relationships with wholesalers to try to weather the storm.

"We're not as helpless as they think we are," said MacKay. "But there may come a day when are no longer able to sell Pfizer product to the U.S."

A spokesman for Pfizer Canada refused to discuss the contents of the letter to the pharmacies, or say how many letters were sent.

But Don Sancton said all Internet pharmacies had been warned Pfizer would no longer tolerate violations of sales agreements that prohibit exports to the United States.

He says the biggest problem is safety because drugs regulated for use in Canada are not approved for use in the United States.

"You're breaking this important chain of regulation and safety and protection of patients by having a transborder traffic in drugs that is not permitted and is not regulated," Sancton said in a telephone interview from Montreal.

"We feel our job is to help protect the integrity of the system by enforcing those conditions that say these products are licensed and regulated for use in Canada and are not for export."

Uhl says he has about a two- to three-month supply of Pfizer drugs such as Celebrex and Lipitor, which are in high demand by the thousands of uninsured or underinsured Americans who depend on Canada's Internet pharmacies for cheap drugs.

The drugs cost less in Canada due in large part to federal regulations.

His customers are already worried.

"We've had e-mails and the phone calls are starting to come in now," said Uhl.

"The bottom line for the customer is: Am I going to be able to buy my pills from you? These people cannot afford to take their pills if they have to buy them in the States."

The federal government has so far been reluctant to wade into the debate, saying it is monitoring the industry.

Health Canada spokeswoman Jirina Vlk said the department has found no evidence of drug shortages or other supply problems that could put Canadians at risk.

However, the federal Competition Bureau ruled last year that companies can restrict sales to Internet pharmacies as long as they still supply the Canadian market.

Some opponents of Internet pharmacies have accused the companies of ordering drugs from developing countries to cope with their supply problems.

But MacKay says there are checks and balances in place to ensure that doesn't happen.

"We would be crazy to do anything like that because it would be discovered in a moment," said MacKay.
