I named names late last year of who served on this panel so it can only be expected that the slower-than-molasses news people would take so long to find it out! It's a simple step to .gov site to find so what took them so long? What isn't told in this article is; the rest of the panel, except for one loan member, has served as a consultant to or on a pharmaceutical industry board or worked within a pharmaceutical company or lobbied for a drug company in the past...

Panelists in FDA Drug Vote Tied to Makers

WASHINGTON (AP) - Ten members of the Food and Drug Administration advisory panel who voted that a group of powerful pain killers should continue to be sold had ties to the drug makers, a new analysis shows.

A study by the Center for Science in the Public Interest indicates that 10 of the 32 panel members had ties to either Pfizer Inc. (PFE), or Merck & Co. (MRK), ranging from consulting fees and speaking honoraria to receiving research support from the companies.

After three days of hearings on the drugs, known as Cox-2 inhibitors, the panel voted 31-1 to keep Pfizer's Celebrex on the market, 17-13 with 2 abstentions in favor of Pfizer's Bextra and 17-15 that Merck's Vioxx should be allowed back on sale.

Merck pulled Vioxx from the market Sept. 30 after heart problems were reported in some users. Similar questions were later raised about the other two drugs, prompting the FDA to call the advisory panel to look into the matter.

Since drug companies fund many studies it is not unusual for researchers to have ties to manufacturers, though some have questioned the practice.

The transcript, including the votes by the individual members of the panel, has not yet been posted by the FDA. However, The New York Times reported its own analysis in Friday editions, indicating that the 10 individuals in question voted 9-1 in favor of allowing the drugs to be sold.

Without their votes, the Times said, the result would have been 12-8 to recommend withdrawing Bextra and 14-8 to keep Vioxx off the market.

Today's fruits and vegetables are apparently a shadow of their former selves, according to every research and study done in the last twenty years.

Researcher Virginia Worthington reviewed 41 published studies comparing the nutritional value of organic foods with conventionally grown counterparts and discovered significant differences.

A 2004 report compared nutrient values of 43 different fruits and vegetables from the 50s with today's contemporaries and found deficiencies in six out of 13 nutrients: protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin (vitamin B2), and vitamin C. What's even more disturbing is that we could be at a loss for lots of other nutrients -- like magnesium, zinc, vitamin B6, vitamin E and dietary fiber -- and not even know it until it's too late and illness takes its toll.

Eating organic foods is part of the solution.

Researcher Virginia Worthington reviewed 41 published studies comparing the nutritional value of organic foods with conventionally grown counterparts and discovered significant differences. Most organic foods contained 27 percent more vitamin C, 21.1 percent more iron, 29.3 percent more magnesium than traditional farmed produce -- the list goes on and on. Additional nutritional value compared with lower levels of pesticides makes going organic a no-brainer but organic foods don't do the whole trick. Even organic foods are often picked before they have fully ripened, which affects nutritional quality. Long-term storage and lengthy transportation times also take their toll on the quality of food. These factors remain constant in both conventional and organic foods.

Other factors that affect both types of produce include environmental degregation and the presence of food additives and preservatives used during preparation.

The undeniable fact is that the food we eat is losing a little more nutritional ground each and every year. So a double dose of spinach isn't going to keep you healthy and well-nourished all on its own. We know we need more, and we know our food is providing less -- it's important to fill that gap. So it's usually necessary to take additional supplements as well. The government RDA's is about one-tenth what our body's require daily to assure our organs and basic cells function properly.

Unique and Interesting; While those who eat it regularly say it's the sweetest best tasting fruit that exists!

Annonaceae aka Cherimoya (U.S., Latin America), Custard Apple (U.K. and Commonwealth), Chirimoya, Chirimolla.

A mouthwateringly delicious, sweet, creamy, subtropical fruit combining the exotic flavors of pineapple, papaya, passionfruit, banana, mango and lemon in one luscious bite. The cherimoya is believed to be native to the inter-Andean valleys of Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. Seeds from Mexico were planted in California (Carpinteria) in 1871.

Conical or somewhat heart-shaped, 4 to 8 inches long and up to 4 inches in width, weighing on the average 5-1/2 to 18 ounces, but the largest fruits may reach 5 pounds in weight. The skin, thin or thick, may be smooth with fingerprint-like markings or covered with conical or rounded protuberances. The sweet, juicy, white flesh is melting, subacid and very fragrant. The fruit is of a primitive form with spirally arranged carpels, resembling a raspberry. Each segment of flesh surrounds a single hard black bean-like seed. The fruit size is generally proportional to the number of seeds within. They ripen October to May.

The fruit turns a pale green or creamy yellow color as they reach maturity. Color change is not marked in cool weather. They should be picked when still firm and allowed to soften at room temperature. Ripe fruit will give to soft pressure. Overripe fruit will be dark brown. Fruit left on the tree too long will usually crack or split and begin to decay. If you are lucky enough to have one of these trees growing in you yard you should know how to pick the fruit? It should be clipped rather than pulled from the tree. Cut the stem close to the fruit so it won't puncture other fruit during storage.

Lots of good nutrients such as vitamins A, C, D, E, B6, B12, K, Retinol, Alpha Carotene, Beta Carotene, Lycopene, Lutein+Zeaxanthin, Beta, Gamma and Delta Tocopherols, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate and Pantothenic Acid. Not too shabby in minerals department either, with Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium.

This fruit is very rich in amino acids making them digestive joys and healthy with; Tryptophan, Threonine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Cystine, Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, Valine, Arginine, Histidine, Alanine, Aspartic acid, Glutamic acid, Glycine, Proline, Serine and Hydroxyproline.

Toxic Seeds:
The seeds are crushed and used as insecticide. Some have said they have witnessed blindness resulting from "the juice of the crushed seeds coming in contact with the eyes." I cannot say if that is true or just a tale that has gone around over the centuries? The seeds do contain several alkaloids: caffeine, reticuline, anonaine, liriodenine, and lanuginosine.

In Mexico, rural people toast, peel and pulverize 1 or 2 seeds and take the powder with water or milk as a potent emetic and cathartic. Mixed seed powder with grease and used to kill lice and is applied on skin disorders caused from parasites. A decoction of the skin of the fruit is taken to relieve pneumonia.

The cherimoya flesh, when ripe, is most commonly eaten out of-hand or scooped with a spoon from a cut open fruit. It really needs no embellishment but some people like to add a few drops of lime juice. Occasionally it is seeded and added to fruit salads or used for making sherbet or ice cream. Something I have not tried but sounds really refreshing and healthful is a Colombian drink; crushed and strained juice, add a slice of lemon and dilute with ice-water to make a refreshing soft drink. The fruit has also been fermented to produce an alcoholic beverage in some cultures. Although it is best eaten straight out of its skin here is a really exotic salad that is found in some high end restaurants;

Cherimoya Fruit Salad
1 cherimoya
2 oranges
2 apples
2 avocados

Peel, seed and cut cherimoya into chunks. Wash and cut apples into eighths (do not remove skin) and core fruit. Peel oranges and cut into slices. Cut slices in half, forming half-circles of orange. Peel and pit avocados and cut into eighths. On a bed of lettuce, arrange alternating slices of apple, orange and avocado in a circle. Top with cherimoya chunks. Serve with poppy seed or light vinaigrette dressing. Or try this dressing: Combine 1/4 cup each; plain yogurt and mayonnaise; add 4 tablespoons cherimoya puree. Makes 6-8 servings.

The Claim: Stepping on a Rusty Nail Can Cause Tetanus

THE FACTS: Any 10-year-old can explain the link between rusty nails and tetanus. But few people realize that the bacteria that cause it are widespread and that the disease has less to do with rust than with the nature of a wound.

Clostridia bacteria, the family of C. tetani, can be found in soil, dust, feces and on the skin. They reproduce only in the absence of oxygen, so any wound deep enough can become a breeding ground.

A rusty nail will do. But the infection can come from many sources - sewing needles, animal bites, gardening tools, splinters. Injuries that create dead skin, like burns and frostbite, can also lead to infection.

The symptoms can be severe. Once the bacteria get underneath the skin, they produce toxins that attack the central nervous system, causing spasms and muscle rigidity all over the body, most frequently in the face. About a quarter of the estimated 50 to 100 Americans who contract the disease each year die.

Although the tetanus vaccine is routinely given to children, its effects wear off after 10 years, and many people fail to get boosters.

THE BOTTOM LINE Any object, rusty or not, that punctures or damages the skin can lead to tetanus.

LENA'S COMMENT: This fact is one you don't see written about much these days. What we have been told in the past wasn't the whole story and this article completes the story.
