I simply could not pass up the most preposterous remark made last week that came from a very uninformed TV doctor who most likely never looks at study results; Tim Johnson, MD said; " A low dose aspirin is probably important now for all women over 65."

WRONG! A 10-year study in which nearly 20,000 women over the age of 45 took 100 mg of aspirin every other day, while the same number of women took a placebo. Results showed that subjects over the age of 65 reduced stroke and heart attack risk by about one-third, BUT they also had a 40 percent increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding - so severe in some cases that transfusions were required and not a good quality of life thereafter for any of them!!! 33% good results created 40% bad results. Not a good trade off in my books!

Is getting old a depressing thought?

Psychological Medicine reports that researchers from the Psychiatric Epidemiology Research Centre at the Australian National University examined all accessible reports of depression and aging. And what they found was that there's actually a drop in the rate of depression and anxiety as people age. In long-term studies, even people who had problems of anxiety and depression when they were younger stopped having these problems when they got old.

Vicks Inhaler Additive Changes Change Classification

Why was it ever listed as a food? Technicalities allow certain chemicals to be listed as such but the Vick's inhalers is being removed from the Foodlist because the company that makes them refuses to fill out an update form. For those of you who have been using this inhaler, we have to tell you that the product underwent a formulation change and now contains methyl salicylate which is a Stage Two ingredient and cannot be listed as a food.

The Codex General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA) is regularly updated to include additional food additive provisions adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The aim of this process is to have the same standards everywhere in the world, making it easier to export and import these items from country to country.

At this time, proposals to lower permitted levels of some additives widely used in food supplements are on the table. An organization called The International Alliance of Dietary/Food Supplement Associations (IADSA) has been very active in this fight; last year they prevented the proposed removal of four additives including Red #3 (Erythrosine), and they successfully raised the permitted levels of BHA, BHT and Carnauba wax. Why should we want Red #3, BHA, and BHT additives in over-the-counter vitamins, of all places? Check your child's vitamin before he/she consumes them to make sure that vitamin does not contain these additives.

The IADSA says that they support establishment of a list of additives "to be used freely in trade in food products" and that they believe that deleting them or adopting low levels for additives would "create confusion" in many countries, as well as "unnecessary barriers to trade.?

Why are women using these natural hormones more lately? Because in 2002, the enormous Women's Health Initiative Study revealed that both Prempro and Premarin significantly increased women's risks of heart attack, breast cancer and dementia!

They're doing this despite the facts that:

* Compounding pharmacies are fully co-educated in standard pharmacy schools AND licensed and regulated by all 50 states

* By law, natural HRT STILL requires a prescription and the supervision of a doctor to use

There can be only one way to add all this up:

Wyeth cares more about protecting the now-miniscule market-share of a line of dismally failing drugs than it does for WOMEN'S LIVES. Here's what I mean:

In 2001, sales of both Premarin and Prempro topped $2 billion. But as a result of the study's findings about increased health risks for women, revenues from these implicated HRT drugs plummeted to less than $1 million per year ($880,000 to be exact) by 2004. That's a reduction of 99.96% in sales and profits.

Put another way: Wyeth is calling for the FDA to outlaw the natural HRT alternatives that are safer, more effective, and cheaper than their drugs in order to preserve less than ONE HALF OF ONE THOUSANDTH the amount of money they used to make on these killers...

See how much (or how little) our lives are worth to Big Pharma?

Whether they're worth any more than this to the FDA depends on how they rule - or ruled - on this complaint (it may have already happened). Of course, I'll feed you more of the story when (if) I learn it.

Exotic Animals Seen Where Antarctic Ice Used to Be

WASHINGTON - Spindly orange sea stars, fan-finned ice fish and herds of roving sea cucumbers are among the exotic creatures spied off the Antarctic coast in an area formerly covered by ice, scientists reported on Sunday.

This is the first time explorers have been able to catalog wildlife where two mammoth ice shelves used to extend for some 3,900 square miles (10,000 square km) over the Weddell Sea.
At least 5,000 years old, the ice shelves collapsed in two stages over the last dozen years. One crumbled 12 years ago and the other followed in 2002.

Global warming is seen as the culprit behind the ice shelves' demise, said Gauthier Chapelle of the Polar Foundation in Brussels.

"These kind of collapses are expected to happen more," he said. "What we're observing here is probably going to happen elsewhere around Antarctica."

Melting ice shelves are not expected to directly contribute much to global sea level rise, but glaciologists believe these vast swaths of ice act like dams to slow down glaciers as they move over the Antarctic land mass toward the coast. Without the ice shelves, glaciers may move over the water more quickly, and this would substantially add to rising seas.

Since 1974, 5,213 square miles (13,500 square km) of ice shelves have disintegrated in the Antarctic Peninsula.

SEA SQUIRTS

But the collapse of the ice shelves gave the scientists a unique opportunity to see what had been hidden beneath them; before the collapse, researchers could only peer through holes drilled deep into the ice.

Chapelle and other scientists from 14 nations traveled to the area aboard the icebreaking vessel Polarstern in a 10-week voyage to investigate underwater wildlife along the Antarctic peninsula, the part of the southern continent that curves up toward South America.

Looking down 2,800 feet (850 metres) into the icy water -- a comparatively shallow depth -- they found fauna usually associated with seabeds about three times that deep, in places where the creatures must adapt to scarcity to survive.

There were blue ice fish, with dorsal fins like ribbed fans and blood that lacks red cells, an adaptation that makes the blood more fluid and easier to pump through the animal's body, conserving energy at low temperatures.

Long-limbed sea stars, some with more than the usual five appendages, mingled with the ice fish, and groups of sea cucumbers were observed moving together, all in one direction.

The explorers also found thick settlements of fast-growing animals called sea squirts, which look like gelatinous bags, which apparently started colonizing the area only after the ice shelves collapsed.

Among the hundreds of specimens collected, the scientists identified 15 possible new species of shrimp-like amphipods, and four possible new species of cnidarians, organisms related to coral, jellyfish and sea anemones, the scientists said in a statement.

These specimens will be analyzed to determine whether they in fact are newly discovered species.
