Outrageous Congressional Abuse And Failure to His Constituents!

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Billy Tauzin, known for his political skills and a backslapping demeanor, resigned Tuesday as chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, one of the most powerful positions in Congress. He announced he will not seek re-election in the fall.

Tauzin's desire to leave Congress has been widely speculated for months as his name surfaced repeatedly as a potential head of lobbying groups of both the pharmaceutical and motion picture industries. (Taking payoffs for industry no doubt)

He was instrumental in engineering passage of the new Medicare prescription drug law passed by Congress in December. He also has been deeply involved in energy and telecommunications legislation. (The one that caused Social Security Recipients to receive less in their monthly SS check. My dh and I can attest to that fact!)

The 12-term Republican congressman from Louisiana hand-delivered his resignation letter to House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., on Tuesday, said Ken Johnson, Tauzin?s spokesman. The resignation is effective Feb. 16.

Tauzin, 60, also will not seek re-election in the fall and could leave Congress before that, said Johnson. He said Tauzin made his decision with his family over the weekend and has not decided what he will do next. (like he needs to worry the drug companies pay big bucks cause you know he is going to take that head position mentioned in this next paragraph!)

Tauzin has repeatedly been mentioned as the top contender to head the lobbying operation of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, or PhRMA, which represents big drug manufacturers such as Eli Lilly and Co. and Merck & Co. He has acknowledged interest in the job.

Recently, Tauzin said he was no longer interested in replacing Jack Valenti, 82, as president of the Motion Picture Association of America, one of the most high profile and best paying lobbying jobs in Washington. (The motion picture industry doesn't pay the big bucks like the drug industry!)

Both potential jobs had raised eyebrows because Tauzin's committee has been so deeply involved in crafting legislation involving drug benefits and the telecommunications and motion picture industry.

Common Cause a private watchdog group, has expressed concern about Tauzin's having job discussions while still chairman of the committee that deals with legislation affecting those same industries.

Know How Your Produce Was Grown?

Want to know if your fruit of vegetables that you eat are
genetically altered?

You know those little stick-on labels you have to peel
off your fruits and vegetables before you eat them?
Well, they can tell you HOW that piece of fruit or
vegetable was grown!

A four (4) digit sticker says that food was grown in
a conventional manner. Conventional meaning on a
farm with pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
 
Five digits starting with an "8" tells you that food
was genetically engineered (GMO)! You will not
know what animal is mixed with it to get that
particular product. Lots have pig genes, so is it
really a fruit or vegetable? Dr. Michael Antoniou,
a British molecular scientist points out,
"Gene-splicing has already resulted in the
unexpected production of toxic substances... in
genetically engineered bacteria, yeast, plants, and
animals with the problem remaining undetected until
a major health hazard has arisen." Genetic engineering
of food and fiber products is inherently unpredictable
and dangerous -- for humans, for animals, the
environment, and for the future of sustainable and
organic agriculture.

Five digits starting with a "9" means that food was
organically grown without GMO seeds, pesticides or
synthetic fertilizer chemicals.

These sticker rules apply most of the time, But;
 
I found that Costco, Sam's club and those warehouse
types stores have their own labeling system and will
not release that information? You will find the origin
of their produce on the packing box in which the
foods are displayed, but that box seldom ever reveals
how the foods were grown, only where.

Did you ever wonder if that sticker is safe for foods.
We are told that stickers must be food grade to be stuck
on your food. Let's hope we are getting the real story there!

Mango-Avocado Soup
 
1 Haas avocado, peeled and seeded, cut in chunks
1 mango, peeled and seeded, cut in chunks
1 cup unsweetened apple juice, or prepared from frozen concentrate
1/2 cup water
1 cup nonfat plain yogurt
2 Tbs. fresh lemon juice
 
In a blender, process all ingredients till combined but still slightly chunky. Chill and serve, garnished with chopped chives or green onion tops. Makes about 5 cups.
 
Per cup: 141 calories, 3.7g protein, 20g carbohydrates, 5.4g fiber, 6.4g fat (1g saturated), 44mg sodium.

Vitamin D Lowers Inflammation

Researchers in Belgium appear to be the first to show that simple, natural and cheap vitamin D (cholecalciferol) lowers C-Reactive Protein (CRP), a measure of inflammation in the body, in critically ill patients.
 
Even small amounts of vitamin D, about 500 IU, lowered inflammation by more than 25 percent in a small group of critically ill patients. Another marker of inflammation (IL-6) was reduced even more. The researchers also found that critically ill patients were profoundly deficient in vitamin D.
 
In another study, researchers found that vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased inflammation in otherwise healthy people. Increased inflammation in the body can increase the risk of chronic inflammatory conditions, including coronary heart disease (CHD) and diabetes. Further, the researchers found that inflammation was lowered by simple vitamin D.
 
As vitamin D deficiency is associated with numerous illnesses with inflammatory components, such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune illness and heart disease, the findings were important. The authors concluded, "This finding provides a possible mechanism for tissue damage in chronic inflammatory conditions, including CHD and diabetes."
 
Inflammation in the body may be as important as cholesterol in determining the risk of heart disease. Unlike cholesterol alone, cholesterol and inflammation together predict a substantial number of cases of heart disease.
 
Various studies show that vitamin D deficiency is widespread among the critically ill and suggest that that vitamin D deficiency may contribute to the inflammatory basis of various illnesses.
 
For example, earlier this year researchers studied patients with congestive heart failure and found elevated levels of TNF, another marker of inflammation. They also found critically low levels of calcidiol [25(OH)D], the only reliable marker of vitamin D, and even found low levels of calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D that is usually low only in those who are severely vitamin D deficient.
 
They concluded vitamin D deficiency might contribute to the development of congestive heart failure (CHF).
 
It is important to note that vitamin D's anti-inflammatory actions in humans have long been suspected. For example, several studies using compounds similar to vitamin D have been shown to significantly reduce inflammation and improve the patients' condition when given to patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=10769432&dopt=Abstract
