Greetings and thank you for subscribing!
I just have to tell you about this one small
experiment that a well known British Chef, Jamie Oliver did. He was
trying to improve children's diets at school but met with severe
resistance. He went to the home of one particularly stubborn child who
had refused to even try anything new. He explained about nutrition to
the mother who agreed to cook, for one week, foods with fresh
ingredients and vegetables. The pre-prepared packaged rubbish was to be
avoided at all costs - and no fries!!!
There were several children in the house and they all appeared to be
quite badly behaved, but after the week was up both the mother and the
father said how amazed they were at how calm their children had become
and how significantly their behavior had improved. And even more
interesting, the one time that they had gone 'off plan' and eaten their
old additive-rich nutrient-free diet, the kids had gone wild again.
Amazing but true!!! Good diet good brain, good behavior!

Where Has All the Prilosec Gone?

For a year, supplies of Prilosec OTC, a popular heartburn drug sold over
the counter, have fallen far short of demand. Procter & Gamble, which
markets the drug, first promised that more Prilosec would be available
by December, and then by January.
But many pharmacy shelves still remain bare of the drug. Now the
University of Utah, which tracks drug shortages, says the shortage of
Prilosec OTC will continue until at least April.
"I have none in stock right now," said Sandy Greco, executive vice
president for purchasing and marketing at Kinray, a drug distributor
that supplies 3,000 pharmacies across the Northeast. "Zero." Mr. Greco
said he contacted Procter & Gamble every day to ask for more Prilosec
OTC but rarely received any.
Procter & Gamble and its partner, AstraZeneca, a British drug company
that owns the rights to Prilosec OTC, say they underestimated demand for
the drug and are working to increase production and correct the
shortage.
"America's frequent heartburn problem has been much more frequent than
we could have ever predicted," said Kurt Weingand, a spokesman for
Procter & Gamble.
But many Wall Street analysts, consumer advocates and academic
researchers who study drug costs discount that explanation and say they
believe that AstraZeneca could easily meet demand for the drug if it
chose.
The shortage of Prilosec has been very good for AstraZeneca's bottom
line because it has increased sales of Nexium, a far more expensive
prescription heartburn medicine that AstraZeneca also sells, said
Michael Krensavage, a drug industry analyst at Raymond James.
Most doctors view the two drugs as essentially identical, yet the cost
of Nexium is more than five times that of Prilosec OTC, about $4 a pill
compared with 70 cents.
"Over-the-counter Prilosec works as well," Mr. Krensavage said. "It's an
utter travesty for the American consumer."

LENA'S COMMENT: Shortage would be a good thing here
but this is nothing more than a ploy to sell more of the expensive
stuff... BOTH OF THESE MEDICATIONS DO HARM to the whole body by
suppressing needed acids for digestion, therefore creating a need to
continue the drug once the acid receptors have atrophied from being
suppressed. Mango or Papaya eaten at the end or beginning of a meal wonders preventing digestive problems or
taking
natural Digestive Enzymes at meal time make these drugs
unnecessary. I keep a bag of dried Mango's and Papaya's in my kitchen
and we eat a few pieces at meal time. Works for my husband who had his
gall bladder removed years ago... Those three things are not dangerous and keeps the digestive
system healthy while
helping to prevent digestive problems in the future! My 88 year-old father had been
taking Prilosec for several years but, he had been switched to Nexium when we got him drug free
last September - that drug went right along with the other 7 - and he no longer suffers from
digestive problems. Could the balanced minerals or the circulatory
support be the reason? Or was it the Silver Water that killed any
bacteria that had propagated itself in the intestinal system with the
acid level gone... I believe at least one or possibly all of those
things did it...

Eczema Skin Creams Can Cause Cancer
Researchers have found a link between increased risks of certain
cancers and the use of two prescription creams commonly used to treat
skin conditions in children has initiated a growing concern among
scientists. This concern prompted scientists to propose adding stronger
warnings to the product labels. The two brands of cream under
investigation are Protopic and Elidel.
Although the creams were approved only to be used for a short-term use
for adults and children age 2 and older, the marketers of Elidel pushed
aggressively for a longer indication. One researcher stated that the
product is being heavily advertised without regard for the potential
cancer risks, particularly among young children. The result of this
marketing push is that both creams are being used for longer than they
safely should be among adults and babies.
On the contrary, the makers of the Elidel argued that the cream is an
effective steroid-free treatment for mild to moderate eczema and has a
well-established profile.
Latest Study Confirms Cancer Link to Creams
Results from the study involving monkeys suggested that the creams might
cause lymphoma, which is defined as a cancer of the immune system
At least seven cases of lymphoma have been reported
At least seven cases of skin cancer and a handful of others have also
been reported
Several children reported infections, including an 8-month-old boy whose
infection was so severe he suffered a heart attack after Protopic was
applied to his body for six months
One researcher suggested the need for regulatory action such as adding a
?black box? warning to the label of the creams.
Concerns over the potential dangers of these creams surfaced the same
time the FDA had been dealing with heavy criticism for failure to
protect the public from the blockbuster painkiller Vioxx, which was
recently pulled from pharmacy shelves because of its link to raising the
risk of cardiac complications such as heart attack and strokes.

regularly say it's the sweetest best tasting fruit that exists!
Annonaceae aka Cherimoya (U.S., Latin America),
Custard Apple (U.K. and Commonwealth), Chirimoya, Chirimolla.
A mouthwateringly delicious, sweet, creamy, subtropical
fruit combining the exotic flavors of pineapple, papaya, passionfruit,
banana, mango and lemon in one luscious bite. The cherimoya is believed
to be native to the inter-Andean valleys of Ecuador, Colombia and Peru.
Seeds from Mexico were planted in California (Carpinteria) in 1871.
Conical or somewhat heart-shaped, 4 to 8 inches long and up to 4 inches
in width, weighing on the average 5-1/2 to 18 ounces, but the largest
fruits may reach 5 pounds in weight. The skin, thin or thick, may be
smooth with fingerprint-like markings or covered with conical or rounded
protuberances. The sweet, juicy, white flesh is melting, subacid and
very fragrant. The fruit is of a primitive form with spirally arranged
carpels, resembling a raspberry. Each segment of flesh surrounds a
single hard black bean-like seed. The fruit size is generally
proportional to the number of seeds within. They ripen October to May.
The fruit turns a pale green or creamy yellow color as they reach
maturity. Color change is not marked in cool weather. They should be
picked when still firm and allowed to soften at room temperature. Ripe
fruit will give to soft pressure. Overripe fruit will be dark brown.
Fruit left on the tree too long will usually crack or split and begin to
decay. If you are lucky enough to have one of these trees growing in you
yard you should know how to pick the fruit? It should be clipped rather
than pulled from the tree. Cut the stem close to the fruit so it won't
puncture other fruit during storage.
Lots of good nutrients such as vitamins A, C, D, E, B6, B12, K, Retinol,
Alpha Carotene, Beta Carotene, Lycopene, Lutein+Zeaxanthin, Beta, Gamma
and Delta Tocopherols, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate and
Pantothenic Acid. Not too shabby in minerals department either, with
Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper,
Manganese and Selenium.
This fruit is very rich in amino acids making them digestive joys
and healthy with; Tryptophan, Threonine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine,
Methionine, Cystine, Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, Valine, Arginine,
Histidine, Alanine, Aspartic acid, Glutamic acid, Glycine, Proline,
Serine and Hydroxyproline.
Toxic Seeds:
The seeds are crushed and used as insecticide. Some have said they
have witnessed blindness resulting from "the juice of the crushed seeds
coming in contact with the eyes." I cannot say if that is true or just a
tale that has gone around over the centuries? The seeds do contain
several alkaloids: caffeine, reticuline, anonaine, liriodenine, and
lanuginosine.
In Mexico, rural people toast, peel and pulverize 1 or 2 seeds and take
the powder with water or milk as a potent emetic and cathartic. Mixed
seed powder with grease and used to kill lice and is applied on skin
disorders caused from parasites. A decoction of the skin of the fruit is
taken to relieve pneumonia.
The cherimoya flesh, when ripe, is most commonly eaten out of-hand or
scooped with a spoon from a cut open fruit. It really needs no
embellishment but some people like to add a few drops of lime juice.
Occasionally it is seeded and added to fruit salads or used for making
sherbet or ice cream. Something I have not tried but sounds really
refreshing and healthful is a Colombian drink; crushed and strained
juice, add a slice of lemon and dilute with ice-water to make a
refreshing soft drink. The fruit has also been fermented to produce an
alcoholic beverage in some cultures. Although it is best eaten straight
out of its skin here is a really exotic salad that is found in some high
end restaurants;
Cherimoya Fruit Salad
1 cherimoya
2 oranges
2 apples
2 avocados
Peel, seed and cut cherimoya into chunks. Wash and cut apples into
eighths (do not remove skin) and core fruit. Peel oranges and cut into
slices. Cut slices in half, forming half-circles of orange. Peel and pit
avocados and cut into eighths. On a bed of lettuce, arrange alternating
slices of apple, orange and avocado in a circle. Top with cherimoya
chunks. Serve with poppy seed or light vinaigrette dressing. Or try this
dressing: Combine 1/4 cup each; plain yogurt and mayonnaise; add 4
tablespoons cherimoya puree. Makes 6-8 servings.

the Mayo Clinic compared diets of 450 men and women, ages 20 to
74, who had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) with the diets of a
group of healthy people. The study found that the cancer-free
group ate a diet rich in green, leafy vegetables and vegetables
in the cruciferous group.
When a research team from the Harvard School of Public Health
did an earlier survey of the 88,410 women in the ongoing Nurses'
Health Study, they found that the women who ate more fruits and
vegetables generally had a lower risk for NHL, and that those
who ate at least five servings of cruciferous vegetables a week
reduced the risk for NHL by a full 33%.

Looking for Personality in Animals, of All People

A team of Dutch scientists is trying to solve the mystery of
personality. Why are some individuals shy while others are bold, for
example? What roles do genes and environment play in shaping
personalities? And most mysterious of all, how did they evolve?
The scientists are carrying out an ambitious series of experiments to
answer these questions. They are studying thousands of individuals,
observing how they interact with others, comparing their personalities
to their descendants' and analyzing their DNA.
It may come as a surprise that their subjects have feathers. The
scientists, based at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology, are
investigating personalities of wild birds.
Until recently, most experts in personality would have considered such a
study as nothing but foolish anthropomorphism. "It's been looked at with
suspicion and contempt," said Dr. Samuel Gosling, a psychologist at the
University of Texas.
But scientists have found that in many species, individual animals
behave in consistently different ways. They argue that these differences
meet the scientific definition of personality.
If they are right, then human personality has deep evolutionary roots.
"It's a matter of degree, not of differences," said Dr. Piet Drent of
the Netherlands Institute of Ecology.
The bird study that Dr. Drent and his colleagues are conducting is
considered the most ambitious investigation of personality in wild
animals.
"They've gone the furthest," said Dr. Sasha Dall, an evolutionary
biologist at the University of Exeter in Cornwall.
The Dutch researchers are studying the importance of genes to the
personalities of the birds, and the effect different personalities have
on their survival. They hope next to carry out parallel studies in
humans to see whether the same forces behind the evolution of bird
personalities are at work in our own species.
The science of human personality is about a century old. Psychologists
have relied largely on questionnaires and other testing methods to map
out its dimensions. One common method is for scientists to ask their
subjects how well certain adjectives apply to themselves (or to people
they know well).
"Certain traits tend to go together," Dr. Gosling said. "We find that
people who are energetic also tend to be talkative. It needn't be that
way, but that's how it tends to be." The flip side is true as well: less
energetic people tend to be less talkative.
Psychologists have found they can bundle these traits into just a few
personality dimensions. People may be more or less extroverted, for
example, which means they are sociable, assertive and tend to have
positive emotions. The same dimensions have been documented across the
world, from Zimbabwe to the Russian Arctic, suggesting that they are
universal in humans.
Some studies have suggested that genes are responsible for some of the
differences in people's personality ratings. But they have been far from
conclusive because scientists cannot do experiments with humans. "Human
mothers will not let you just swap their infants at birth, which would
be a great study to do," Dr. Gosling said.
It has been only in the last decade or so that scientists have
investigated whether animals have personalities. In one pioneering study
in the mid-1990's, Dr. Gosling studied a colony of 34 hyenas at the
University of California, Berkeley. "My goal was simply to say, can we
measure personality in animals? It wasn't clear it was going to work,"
he said.
Dr. Gosling asked the four caretakers of the colony to fill out a
modified version of the human questionnaire for each animal.
"It turned out that they agreed at the level you find in humans," Dr.
Gosling said. What's more, the hyena personalities fit some of the
dimensions found in humans, like neuroticism and agreeableness. Since
then, a number of other studies have documented personalities in animals
ranging from chimpanzees to squid.
To some biologists, the main question about these animal personalities
is why natural selection keeps such a wide range of them. "Why hasn't
one personality become the standard in the population?" asked Dr. Drent.
If being extroverted offers the best odds for a hyena to reproduce, you
might expect that over time, all hyenas would wind up as extroverts.
