Report Warns Malnutrition Begins in Cradle
By CELIA W. DUGGER
March 3, 2006

Nutrition education programs for parents would do a better job than large and politically popular feeding programs in fighting the rampant malnutrition that is stunting the development of more than 100 million children worldwide, a new World Bank report says, finding that a lack of food is usually not the main cause of child malnutrition.

World Bank Report (worldbank.org) Children are irreversibly damaged by malnutrition by age 2, long before they begin primary school. The World Bank report contends that aid efforts must concentrate on the brief window of opportunity before that age. And in areas not hit by famine or other crises, the report says, efforts must focus more on teaching mothers to properly feed and care for babies and toddlers than on school meal programs.

While experts interviewed yesterday generally agreed with the bank's assessment of the evidence on malnutrition, some of them argued that feeding programs did have an important role to play in improving the nutrition of children.

The debate about how to tackle the problem is an important one at a time when the world is pushing to reduce child mortality by two-thirds over the coming decade. Malnutrition is implicated in more than half of the deaths of children globally, "a proportion unmatched by an infectious disease since the Black Death," the bank's report says.

The World Bank, as the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development is popularly known, is the largest financier of antipoverty programs in developing countries. Its report, titled "Repositioning Nutrition as Central to Development," maintains that countries like India with staggering rates of malnutrition need to change their approach to speed up progress.

Outside of regions in crises, nutritionists at the bank say, programs should shift their emphasis from directly providing food to changing the behaviors of mothers - for example, to breast-feed exclusively for the first six months of life or seek quick treatment for their children's diarrhea. Improvements to sanitation and health care are also needed.

The origins of malnutrition often lie in the way infants and young children are fed, not the quantity of food available.

In many societies in Africa and South Asia, the first days of thick, yellowish breast milk, called colostrum, are discarded, though it contains antimicrobials that can protect children against infection. It is then replaced with local concoctions that all too often include bad water that can give children diarrhea. For school-age children, nutrition education, iron supplements and deworming medicines are usually better investments for improving nutrition than providing meals, the report says. It acknowledges that feeding programs increase school attendance, but emphasizes that they should not come at the expense of efforts to reach preschool children.

"You get more bang for your buck without the food," said Meera Shekar, the lead author of the report, who described feeding programs as costly and vulnerable to corruption. "The food brings in votes for politicians. We have very little evidence it improves nutrition."

Advocates of feeding programs reply that food can be a magnet that draws mothers and children to centers where nutrition counseling is offered ? and that food itself can provide pregnant women and children under 2 with a richer, more varied diet, while attracting older children to school and helping them concentrate on learning.

"If you feed the children well, they'll all be there," said Jean Dreze, an economist and leading advocate of free lunch programs in India, which now serve more than 100 million primary-school students. "The response to food is phenomenal."

Some of the facts about malnutrition, familiar to experts but not widely understood, seem counterintuitive. For example, rates of malnutrition in South Asia, including India, Bangladesh and Nepal, are nearly double those in sub-Saharan Africa, which is much poorer.

India's programs to feed children in school have multiplied in recent years, but its nutrition program for preschool children mainly assists those between the ages of 3 to 6 ? too late to prevent the stunting and damage to intellect that occur by age 2, bank nutritionists and other experts say.

A spokesman for the Indian Embassy in Washington said yesterday that he had not yet read the report and could not comment on it.

The problem of malnutrition in India, known for its well-educated, high-tech workers, is striking. Almost half the children are stunted by malnutrition, but the problem is not limited to the poor. A quarter of the children under age 5 in the richest fifth of the population are also underweight and nearly two-thirds are anemic, the report says.

"Think of the power of India if all these kids were not malnourished and could participate fully," Ms. Shekar said.

Nutritionists say the implications of the large body of research that informs the bank's report is clear: countries must intervene before children turn 2.

"If you miss that period, the damage is irreversible, especially in cognition, but also in growth," said Marie Ruel, director of the division of food consumption and nutrition at the International Food Policy Research Institute.

LENA'S COMMENT: I have said this for years now but nobody was listening... Finally someone else is saying it and from a corner that should know, although I haven't seen their study report to verify their figures and facts...  Malnourishment comes about from lack of nutrients in what foods we do eat so we can't blame anyone other than the farmers and chemical companies who have trained them... We do know that given a mineral balance we can absorb what nutrients we do get in our food stuff... So get balanced mineral supplement in your life today...

One interesting observation about organic butter, when compared to non-organic butter...you'll notice that the color is bright. The non-organic stuff is pale yellow in color and the organic is a very appetizing buttery color. When it comes to cooking with butter, there is absolutely no comparison in flavor and texture of organic, compared to non-organic butter.

Cramps? Replenish minerals
Joe Graedon, Teresa Graedon
February 27, 2006

I'm 47 years old and play basketball. My calves seem to cramp almost every time I play. I stretch them for about 20 minutes beforehand, but it doesn't help. Could this be due to a lack of calcium or potassium?

Muscle cramps can be caused by all sorts of things, including a lack of minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium. In such cases, replenishing the minerals may prevent the cramps.

A former professional football player told us that the best home remedy is a jigger of pickle juice. He also found a glass of tonic water with quinine helpful. Other readers tell us that a teaspoonful of yellow mustard also works.

LENA'S COMMENT: What really works is a balance of minerals... I know, as I was there and corrected those leg cramps...

The Wild Healthy Green That Drives Gardeners Mad!

With the warm weather we have been having and even without rain we so badly need these little green things will be appearing shortly in just about every lawn and yard in the country...

This wild vegetation drives gardeners crazy when trying to keep lawns nice and weed-free. Over the centuries our ground has become deplete of minerals in the soil and Mother Nature says we have to take care of that problem? Hence this green grow rampant all over this earth trying to repair the depletion!

Much more than a repairer weed the dandelion is an edible plant with uncommon nutritional and medicinal value and grows wild in almost every yard in making it a free food! There are many varieties of Dandelion leaves; some are deeply cut into segments, in others the segments or lobes form a much less conspicuous feature.

Since spring is a time to clean your home and your body, this week's vegetable is one that anyone can have from the poorest to the richest pocketbook that not only fills a nutritious detoxing program but contributes to good health and costs nothing to put on your table!

The dandelion's name comes from the French term "dent-de-lion," meaning "lion's tooth" - so named for its dark-green leaves with pointy, toothlike edges - a staple in French country kitchens. Russia, calls it "life-elixir," and its leaves are traditionally steamed and served with sour cream and thinly sliced red onion. Italians like the leaves chopped and sauteed with garlic and olive oil. The English boil them and then toss them with vinegar and salt. Almost every part of the dandelion can be consumed, including the blossoms and roots. Only the dried-out puffball of seeds is inedible; that part seems to have been created purely to make man mad and for procreation of the plant.

The dandelion leaves are shiny and without hairs, the margin of each leaf cut into great jagged teeth, either upright or pointing somewhat backwards, and these teeth are themselves cut here and there into lesser teeth. It is this somewhat fanciful resemblance to the canine teeth said to resemble the angular jaw of a lion fully supplied with teeth.

The shining, purplish flower-stalks rise straight from the root, are leafless, smooth and hollow and bear single heads of flowers. On picking the flowers, a bitter, milky juice exudes from the broken edges of the stem, which is present throughout the plant, and when it comes into contact with the hand, turns to a brown stain that is rather difficult to remove.

The dandelion is a veritable feast for at least ninety-three different kinds of insects who are in the habit of feasting on it.

As a Soil Builder, one of the best!

The plant prefers to take root in poor demineralized soil, where it sends its thick brown taproot deep to pull minerals from below, restoring health to overused topsoil. Wherever you see dandelions turning a green meadow gold, the earth is being replenished. When you see them growing in abundance in your garden or yard, know that area is deplete of minerals big time and leave them alone or supplement that area with minerals?

Dandelions bloom in spring and fall. For this reason, they are beloved by beekeepers: They can depend on the nectar from these blossoms for making honey well into autumn, long after other flowers have gone. The plants are also useful in fruit orchards, since their leaves emit a gas that makes fruit ripen early and evenly.

Since ancient times, the plant has been recognized for its medicinal qualities. Tenth-century Arab physicians called it taraxacon, meaning "a remedy for disorders." It has an especially potent effect on the liver resides in solar plexis area of the body, and one of the dandelion's main constituents, choline, is essential to liver function. The stomach and gall bladder can also be strengthened by regular consumption of dandelion. Bitter greens, such as dandelion and chicory, release hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which helps with digestion. They also contain generous amounts of vitamins C and A and the mineral calcium.

Harvesting dandelions

Dandelion greens can often be found among the colorful medley of greens known as mesclun (A mixture of young salad greens), sold at farmers' markets, natural-food stores and the specialty-produce sections of most grocery stores. The blossoms and roots, however, are rarely available commercially; you'll probably need to harvest your own. Pick blossoms in a field that you know hasn't been treated with chemicals; dig roots - also chemical-free area - with a garden fork on a day when a recent rainfall has softened the ground.

It is a great as a salad green loaded with antioxidants, and potassium. Is a great milk producer in cows - most cows will not eat it but when they do it increases the milk production by about 1/3 - and in lactating women. The leaves are more nutritious than anything you can buy with more beta-carotene than carrots. More iron and phenomenal calcium than spinach. High in vitamins B-1, B-2, B-5, B-6, B-12, C, E, P, and D, biotin, inositol, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc. A tasty, free vegetable that grows on virtually every yard.

The young leaves of the Dandelion make an agreeable and wholesome addition to spring salads. The full-grown leaves should not be taken, being too bitter, but the young leaves, especially if blanched or sautéed, make an excellent salad, either alone or in combination with other greens, onion, lemon juice, shallot tops and/or chives. Dandelion is only pleasantly bitter, and if eaten while the leaves are quite young, the center rib of the leaf is not at all unpleasant to the taste. But older the rib is tough and not so tasty to eat.

The young leaves may also be boiled as a vegetable, spinach fashion, thoroughly drained, sprinkled with lemon or lime juice, pepper and salt, moistened with soup or butter and served very hot. If considered a little too bitter, use half spinach, but the Dandelion must be partly cooked first then add the spinach to finish cooking, as it takes
longer than spinach. Another variation, some grated nutmeg or garlic, a teaspoonful of chopped onion or grated lemon peel can be added to the greens when they are cooked. A simple vegetable soup may also be made with Dandelions.

The dried Dandelion leaves are also employed as an ingredient in many digestive or diet drinks and herb beers. Dandelion Beer is a rustic fermented drink common in many parts of the country and made also in Canada. Workmen in the furnaces and potteries of the industrial towns of the Midlands have frequent resource to many of the tonic Herb Beers, finding them cheaper and less intoxicating than ordinary beer, and Dandelion stout ranks as a favorite with many. An unusual but agreeable and wholesome fermented drink is made from Dandelions, Nettles and Yellow Dock.

The roasted roots are largely used to form Dandelion Coffee, being first thoroughly cleaned, then dried by artificial heat, and slightly roasted till they are the tint of coffee, when they are ground ready for use. The roots are pulled up in the autumn, which is the best time for this purpose. The prepared powder is said to be almost indistinguishable from real coffee, and is said to be an improvement to inferior coffee.

The dandelion is known for it's diuretic properties as well as used for blood cleansing tonic and slightly aperient (laxative). It is a general stimulant to the system and especially to the urinary organs, and is chiefly used medicinally in kidney and liver disorders.

Dandelions are also good tonic for the bladder, spleen, pancreas, stomach and intestines. It?s recommended for stressed-out, internally sluggish, and sedentary people. Anyone who's a victim of excessive fat, white flour, and concentrated sweeteners could benefit from a daily cup of dandelion tea.

Have gallstones try this;
1 OZ. Dandelion root,
1 OZ. Parsley root,
1 OZ. Balm herb,
1/2 OZ. Ginger root,
1/2 OZ. Liquorice root.
Place in 2 quarts of water and gently simmer down to 1 quart, strain and take a wineglassful every two hours.

A Healthier jelly for the morning toast/English muffin/bagel! (Jelly isn't really healthy but this is a close as you are going to get to healthy jelly)

Dandelion Flower Jelly
Ingredients:

4 cups yellow parts of dandelion blossoms
3 cups boiling water
4 1/2 cups sugar (I prefer the equivalent in Stevia)
2 Tbsp Freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 pkg powdered pectin

Pull the yellow blossoms apart from the green parts. Get lots and lots of blossoms.. While you are collecting them, you can freeze what you already have. Make sure there are no green parts since the green parts have a bitter flavor. I pack the blossoms into a 4 cup measure. More blossoms mean more flavor for the jelly. Bring the water to a boil and fill the water with dandelion blossom shreds. Simmer over very gentle heat about 10 minutes. Pour the water and blossoms through a strainer. Press the blossoms as dry as possible to extract the maximum amount of water. Add more blossoms to the strained water and simmer for about 10 minutes. Continue simmering and straining until all the blossoms are used up. Add more water to make up 3 cups. You lose some water because it is caught in the blossoms. Strain the water very well. I use a coffee filter. Combine water with lemon juice, sugar and pectin. Bring to roiling boil and stir until sugar is dissolved. Boil hard for one minute. Skim. Pour into hot jars and seal. I haven't used food coloring but I have seen this jelly lightly tinted pink with pure cherry juice and it looks prettier as well as adding more healthy properties.

Enjoy your free food while cleaning the comfort food goop from your system preparing for the summer heat!

FDA: Drug Companies Drop Ball on Studies
Mar 3, 2006
By ANDREW BRIDGES

WASHINGTON (AP) - Drug companies sometimes are allowed to hurry medicines to market in exchange for a promise to continue studying their safety and effectiveness. Those studies haven't begun in two-thirds of cases, the government reported Friday.

The Food and Drug Administration said Friday that drug companies had pledged to conduct 1,231 drug studies. But as of Sept. 30, 797 - or 65 percent - were still pending.

"That doesn't mean they will never be started," said Dr. John Jenkins, director of the FDA's Office of New Drugs.

Dr. Alastair Wood, associate dean of Vanderbilt Medical School, said if the FDA doesn't require the studies to be done, it shouldn't ask for them in the first place.

"It's astonishing, really. Their job is to get the studies done and not be an apologist for their not getting done," Wood said.

Federal regulators often grant new drugs expedited approval on condition that their manufacturers then carry out so-called "post-marketing" studies. The outcome of those studies can lead to changes in how a drug is made, prescribed and used.

Of the 797 studies still pending, commitments for 116 of them were made during the previous year. The clinical trials required under the commitments can take six months to a year to design and launch, Jenkins said.

Some studies had been agreed to years earlier, but the FDA didn't provide a breakdown.

The pending studies represent a slight dip from the 812 still pending as of a year earlier, according to FDA documents. FDA spokeswoman Kathleen Quinn said the agency feels that "these numbers show drug companies are taking this thing seriously."

Alan Goldhammer, of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, an industry group, said the figures should not be "distorted."

"To be clear, pending does not mean delayed. It does mean, however, that the immense and vitally important tasks of developing research protocols, finding investigators and researchers and even recruiting patients to participate in the study is in process," Goldhammer said.

Dr. Jerry Avorn, a Harvard Medical School professor and author of "Powerful Medicines," in which he criticizes the FDA's post-marketing system, said the numbers show the system is broken.

"This new information is an embarrassing continuation of similar reports issued by FDA each year on the appalling state of the medication safety studies it has 'mandated' drug manufacturers to perform. It is scandalous that of the supposedly active studies, about two-thirds haven't even been started yet," Avorn said.

The FDA says it relies on the so-called Phase 4 studies to gather additional information about a drug's safety, efficacy or use. The FDA also can require the studies after it has approved a drug, including to better determine its safe use in children.

The report, posted to the FDA Web site, lists 231 studies as ongoing, 28 as delayed and three as terminated as of Sept. 30. Another 172 studies are listed as completed or terminated, with a final report submitted to the agency.

The report also tallies studies required of biological products, which include vaccines, blood components and transplant tissues. There, of 321 study commitments, 118 - or 37 percent - remained pending as of Sept. 30. Another 56 were completed by that date.

"The underlying problem is that the FDA has little ability to enforce these commitments, short of withdrawing approval for the drug - an outcome that may not serve the public health well. The great majority of post-marketing studies address safety issues, at least in part, so patients and physicians are denied critical safety information when these studies are not completed in a timely fashion," said Peter Lurie, deputy director of the watchdog group Public Citizen's Health Research Group.

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, and Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., introduced legislation last year that would give the FDA added authority to require drug companies to carry out studies of their drugs once they've been approved and are being sold.

The FDA plans to award a contract in coming weeks to evaluate and improve the process of how the studies are developed and implemented, Quinn said.

http://Food and Drug Administration

LENA'S COMMENT: If they wait long enough they will reap billions of dollars in sales before they have to withdraw a multitude of drugs that will not pass testing... Is the FDA pushing them to get with it? NO! What about fining them the billions they are making on sales and I bet the testing would appear mighty fast!

Pesticides Found in Most U.S. Rivers
Mar 4, 2006
By JOHN HEILPRIN

WASHINGTON (AP) - Most of the nation's rivers and streams - and the fish in them - are contaminated with pesticides linked to cancer, birth defects and neurological disorders, but not at levels that can harm humans.

Pesticides were found in almost all U.S. rivers and streams between 1992 and 2001, says a study released Friday by the U.S. Geological Survey, although most drinking water supplies haven't been affected.

"While the use of pesticides has resulted in a wide range of benefits to control weeds, insects and other pests, including increased food production and reduction of insect-borne disease, their use also raises questions about possible effects on the environment, including water quality," said Robert Hirsch, the USGS associate director for water.

Pesticides were seldom found at concentrations likely to affect people, and they were less common in groundwater. But they were found in most fish.

Most frequently detected in agricultural streams were three herbicides used mainly on farms: atrazine, metolachlor and cyanazine. Just last week, the Environmental Protection Agency settled a 2003 lawsuit brought by the Natural Resources Defense Council, forcing the government to assess whether atrazine threatens the survival of endangered Chesapeake Bay sea turtles, endangered Texas salamanders and 16 other aquatic species.

Three other herbicides used commonly in cities - simazine, prometon and tebuthiuron - showed up more often in urban streams.

The USGS looked for 100 pesticides, and found 40 of them had a widespread presence in streams and sediment in both urban and agricultural areas, at concentrations that could affect aquatic life or fish-eating wildlife. The pesticides showed up more than 90 percent of the time in the fish tissue found in agricultural, urban and mixed land-use areas.

In each of the streams the USGS studied, at least one pesticide was detected. In about 19 of every 20 streams with agricultural, urban or mixed land-use watersheds, pesticide compounds were found at nearly all times of the year. The most frequent occurrence was in shallow groundwater beneath agricultural and urban areas, where more than half the wells contained one or more pesticide compounds.

Jay Feldman, executive director of Beyond Pesticides, a national research and advocacy group, said the data surrounding the nation's reliance on about 1 billion pounds of pesticides a year "shows an urgent need to strengthen policies at all levels of government and curtail pesticide use."

The USGS report is based on an analysis of data from 51 major river basins and aquifer systems nationally, and a study of an aquifer system that runs through eight states from South Dakota to Texas, east of the Rocky Mountains.

It found that concentrations of individual pesticides nearly always complied with the EPA's drinking-water standards, though no water samples from streams were taken at drinking-water intakes. The EPA also is responsible for reviewing pesticides, based on pesticide-makers' tests that can cost tens of millions of dollars. It typically takes up to a decade to study each one before it can reach the marketplace, according to industry figures.

But simply detecting the presence of a pesticide does not always mean there is reason for concern, said Jay Vroom, president of CropLife America, which represents pesticide developers and manufacturers. He emphasized that the use of pesticides by farmers, ranchers and others is strictly regulated by federal and state laws.

"Water quality is of paramount importance to us," he said. "And the USGS report correctly recognizes that the large majority of pesticide detections in streams and groundwater were trace amounts, far below scientifically based minimum levels set for protecting human health and the environment."

LENA'S COMMENT: Let's get real here! Okay, so the contaminants are changing the sex of fish and mutating them yet not harmful to humans. If that is the greatest head-in-the-sand crap I ever heard I don't know what is!
