Correction: AP Corrects Story on Tysabri

DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) - In a story earlier Friday, The Associated Press erroneously reported that a patient had died in a second confirmed case of a rare nerve disease after taking the recently suspended multiple sclerosis-fighting drug, Tysabri. While a first case was fatal, the second patient to contract the disease is still alive. The AP has transmitted a corrected version of this story.

Elan Corp. of Ireland and Biogen Idec Inc. (BIIB) of Cambridge, Mass., had announced Monday that they were withdrawing the drug. On Friday, they announced the second case of the nerve disease had been confirmed.

Can be slightly sweet or very sour depending on which species you choose. A strange looking, bumpy, unique, waxy, golden yellow to green fruit that has a 5 pointed star shape when cut across the middle of the fruit, ranging from 3 to 5 inches long with four to six deep lengthwise grooves, is popular in many countries. When it is sliced crosswise, the slices are shaped like stars, thus its common name, star fruit. Citrus nutrients similar to other exotic citrus!

Tart varieties generally have narrowly spaced ribs; sweet varieties have thick, fleshy ribs. Originally from Sri Lanka and the Moluccas, and cultivated in Southeast Asia and Malaysia for several hundred years. An excellent source of vitamin C, supplying 35% of the Daily Value in 3 1/2 ounces, which is equal to a small whole fruit or about 2/3 cup sliced. I was unable to find more distinct vitamins and minerals listed in any of the University extensions that usually list those things but the statement; "Nutrients similar to other citrus fruits"...

Handle with care! They bruise easily. Star fruit (the sweet variety) can be eaten out of hand or sliced and used as a garnish or in salads. They are also used in chutney, curries and tarts. The juice can be used in tropical drinks and smoothies. Star fruit is easy to prepare, because it does not require peeling or seeding. It can be eaten out of hand after it has been washed. Spray with vinegar and wash under cold running water. Cut it crosswise into thin slices. If the skin is unappealing, though it doesn't affect the tatste, simply peel it off with a paring knife.

Ripe fruit should be stored at room temperature for two to three days or refrigerated, unwashed, in a tightly covered container or plastic bag for up to one week.

Healthy properties are said to, reduce fever and cough in common cold; relieve kidney and bladder stones, shrink hemorrhoids and relieve painful urination and hemorrhoids. It is claimed that eating the fruit reduces blood sugar levels in diabetics. In Chinese medicine, they are used as a diuretic. WARNING: persons in dialysis should take care when eating star fruit as some cases of intoxication, insomnia and hiccups to agitation, mental confusion and - in one case death - two people went into renal (kidney) failure after eating star fruit . Both recovered four weeks later after hemodialysis… Also do not eat on an empty stomach or if in dehydrated state as the star fruit may pose an additional risk for development of renal injury.

1 cup low fat vanilla yogurt
Makes 4 servings.

Peel kiwi and banana, cut into medium size pieces. Slice star fruit into ¼-inch thickness. Combine all fruits in bowl. Add nectar over mixture. Refrigerate for 3 hours. Top with vanilla yogurt.

Drinking the juice alone and unmixed with other fruits or vegetables not recommended! Two people – age not given - are reported to have developed nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and backache within hours of ingesting large quantities of sour carambola juice; then acute renal failure followed that required dialysis.

Acid-Reducers Increase Pneumonia Risk

Americans gobble down acid-suppressing drugs like candy these days. It?s crazy. So many are available, both over-the-counter and prescription. You can?t turn on the television without seeing an ad for one acid-blocker or another. I hate to think how many women still chew on antacids to try to get their daily calcium.

What do I have against acid-suppressing drugs? My main beef is that if people would just clean up their diets and eat more moderately, they wouldn?t suffer from reflux or heartburn anywhere near as often.

I also agree with holistic health experts and complementary physicians who say that the problem is generally not too much acid in the stomach, but not enough. Food can?t be properly digested when acid is inadequate. The digestive tract knows when to open the sphincter between the stomach and the intestines by the acidity of the stomach contents. When it takes longer to reach that level of acidity due to acid-suppressing drugs, food sits there too long. Eventually the stomach starts to send some of it back up. Voila! You?ve got heartburn.

Research from the University Medical Center at St. Radboud, Nijmegen, the Netherlands finds a new problem with acid-suppressing drugs: they significantly increase pneumonia risk. The research team studied 364,683 subjects enrolled in the Integrated Primary Care Information database between January 1, 1995 and December 31, 2002. Of these subjects, 5,551 developed pneumonia during the follow-up period. With some fancy (and scientifically rigorous) number-wrangling, the researchers figured out that subjects who took acid-suppressing drugs developed pneumonia 4.5 times more often than those who never took the drugs. Current users had nearly twice the risk compared to former users. Risk was higher for those who took proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec, Nexium) than for those who took H2 blockers Tagamet, Zantac).

Why would acid-blockers raise risk of pneumonia? Acid is the stomach?s main tool for killing off pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. Scientific studies of people who use acid-blockers have identified bacteria and viruses within the stomach that also exist in the mouth, and that are meant to be killed off by the time they reach the stomach. These bacteria and viruses may end up infecting the lungs and causing pneumonia.

When people do suffer from acid reflux or heartburn, there are natural remedies that don?t stop your stomach from producing needed acid. Drinking hot or cold liquids with meals increases heartburn risk. Drink before or after meals instead of during. Don?t lie down right after eating and keep the fat content of meals to a minimum. Betaine hydrochloride (HCl) supplements, deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL), or herbal teas such as slippery elm, comfrey, licorice, or meadowsweet can tame heartburn. If you have chronic acidity and you think you may have a stomach ulcer, make sure you are evaluated for H.pylori by a nutritionally-oriented physician.
