According to the Journal of Nutrition, MSG may not cause headaches after all. University researchers found 130 people who complained of MSG headaches and got them to try foods with and without MSG. They also gave them samples of plain MSG. Some of the people who had reported MSG headaches did react when they were given pure MSG. But none of them had any reaction when the MSG was mixed with food.

If your doctor prescribes chemotherapy for breast cancer treatment!

Here is the question that must be asked before undergoing chemotherapy: Is the cancer estrogen driven?

Why ask? In women who have not yet reached menopause, gene damage is usually the cause of breast cancer. In these cases, chemo is one of the standard treatments. But most women are still not aware that about 75 percent of breast cancer tumors in postmenopausal women are estrogen driven. For these estrogen receptor-positive tumors, chemo has little or no effect, while treatment with tamoxifen (a synthetic hormone-like drug that prevents estrogen from binding to breast cancer cells) has been shown to be far more effective than chemo, even if the cancer has spread to lymph nodes.

What about Tamoxifen?

The list of tamoxifen side effects looks exactly like a list of menopausal symptoms: hot flashes, nausea, vomiting, weight gain, mood swings, depression, and loss of energy. More serious side effects include two life-threatening conditions: deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

During the initial IBIS trial, 52 women who took tamoxifen suffered either deep-vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, while 23 cases occurred in the placebo group. In the eight-year follow up, 16 cases were reported in the tamoxifen group, and 14 in the placebo group.

Is Supplementing okay with breast cancer treatment?

Researchers at the University of Madras recently reported on a study in which 84 breast cancer patients received either 20 mg of tamoxifen daily or a placebo for one year. During the trial period, tamoxifen subjects who also took 100 mg of CoQ10, 50 mg of niacin, and 10 mg of riboflavin for 45 or 90 days had significantly reduced levels of two key markers that are usually elevated prior to relapse.

In addition, a 2005 animal study suggested that CoQ10 might boost the effectiveness of tamoxifen.

Warnings Sought on Kids' Cold Medicine

WASHINGTON (AP) - Government health officials said Friday they are reviewing whether popular medicines like Tylenol Plus Cold & Cough and Infant Triaminic Thin Strips are safe and effective in treating children's colds and coughs.

Disclosure of the ongoing review, which will take months to complete, came as critics charged that many over-the-counter cough and cold remedies can harm toddlers and preschoolers. Those critics, including public health officials and pediatricians, are pushing the government for stricter warnings to prevent life-threatening overdoses.

"We have been looking at this issue internally with regard to the safety and efficacy of the use of these products in children," Dr. Charles Ganley, director of the FDA's office of nonprescription drug products, told reporters as he responded to a petition filed Thursday by city of Baltimore officials and others. The review covers medicines that include decongestants, antihistamines, cough suppressants and expectorants.

The petition is far from the first warning about tots using the medicines. The American Academy of Pediatrics began issuing those warnings to parents in 1997. And just two months ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that more than 1,500 toddlers and babies wound up in emergency rooms over a two-year period because of the drugs. The study's authors told parents to consult a doctor before giving the remedies to children under age 2.

Toxic Chemical Leaches from Popular Baby Bottles
Parents Need Information to Protect Their Kids

MINNEAPOLIS - February 27 - A chemical known to be toxic to the nervous and reproductive system, and a developmental toxin, leaches from popular clear, plastic baby bottles, according to Toxic Baby Bottles: Scientific Study Finds Leaching Chemicals in Clear Plastic Baby Bottles, a new report released today. The chemical, called bisphenol A, is a disruptor of hormone function and has been found by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the urine of 95 percent of Americans tested.

The report is based on independent laboratory testing of the most popular baby bottles on the market commissioned by the Environment California Research and Policy Center. It can be found at: www.EnvironmentCalifornia.org.

"We all want to raise our children in ways that are safe, healthy and that maximize their potential," said David Wallinga, MD, Director of the Food and Health Program at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP). "Sadly, that's made harder by the fact that manufacturers aren't required to give parents even the most basic safety information on toxic chemicals in baby bottles and other household products." IATP works in coalition with the Environment California Research and Policy Center for safer plastic and other consumer products.

Five of the most popular brands of baby bottles on the market were tested to determine whether bisphenol A leached from the bottles into liquids contained inside them. All five leached bisphenol A at levels that have been found to cause harm in numerous laboratory animal studies.

Bisphenol A is most commonly used to make clear polycarbonate plastic for consumer products, such as baby bottles. Through use, this plastic breaks down and leaches bisphenol A into liquids and food to which it comes into contact.

Scientists have linked very low doses of bisphenol A exposure to cancers, impaired immune function, early onset of puberty, obesity, diabetes, and hyperactivity, among other problems. Alarmingly, the median level of bisphenol A found by the CDC in humans is higher than the level found in animals to cause adverse health effects.

"Parents can't make informed health choices about baby products when they're left in the dark by manufacturers." said Wallinga, a physician. "We need a drastic overhaul in how we regulate consumer products to require manufacturers to demonstrate their products are safe, made safely, and made from safe ingredients, before they're allowed on the market."

Absent action by state or federal authorities to protect consumers from bisphenol A, or to ensure that consumers are notified of bisphenol A in baby and other products, IATP recommends that parents and other childcare providers:

* Choose glass or safer-plastic baby bottles; see IATP's Smart Plastics Guide for more information (www.iatp.org)

* Never heat food or beverages in plastic containers or bottles, which can speed up the process of toxic chemicals leaching out of the plastic;

* In washing plastic products, avoid harsh dishwashing soap and hot water, both of which speed up leaching.
