Marketing Tricks Drug Companies Use to Fool You

The drug company AstraZeneca, which makes the breast cancer drug tamoxifen and other cancer treatments, has pledged $10 million to the American Cancer Society to help provide "one-on-one support" for cancer patients in U.S. hospitals.

The pledge will go to a program that guides patients to services that provide social and emotional support, transportation, and medical and financial assistance.

The gift will allow the program to expand to 50 more locations.

The Cancer Society receives just under $1 billion in gifts and grants each year, but less than 2 percent of that comes from drug companies. AstraZeneca's sales exceeded $26 billion in 2006.

A New Natural Weapon to Fight H. Pylori

Extra virgin olive oil could help prevent and treat Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections, which cause millions of cases of gastritis and peptic ulcer disease each year.

Previous studies have shown that natural foods such as green tea and cranberry juice inhibit the growth of H. pylori infections in the stomach lining. This is the first time that olive oil has been looked at in this context.

In laboratory cultures, the phenolic compounds in extra virgin olive oil had strong antibacterial effects against eight strains of H. pylori, including antibiotic-resistant strains. The compounds were also shown to be capable of remaining stable in the harsh acidic conditions of the stomach.

'A Natural Superfood'

Originated in Europe and Russia. A hardy perennial found in abundance near springs and open running waterways, of a creeping habit with smooth, shining, brownish-green, oval leaves and heart-shaped leaflets. Flowers small and white, produced towards the extremity of the branches signal the end of its season. The true nasturtium or Indian Cress cultivated in gardens as a creeper has brilliant orange-red flowers and produces the seeds which can substitute for capers in pickles. Most common modern day name is Watercress!

Take care with wild picking! The poisonous Marshwort or 'Fool's Cress' is often mistaken for Watercress, with which it is sometimes found growing. It may readily be distinguished by its hemlock-like white flowers, and when out of flower, by its finely toothed and somewhat pointed leaves, much longer than those of the watercress and of a paler green. The Latin name 'Nasturtium' is derived from the words nasus tortus (a convulsed nose) on account of its pungency.

Watercress, like other kinds of cress, has a peppery, slightly metallic taste, and can often be found mixed with spinach and rocket leaves in salad bags. Watercress is a dark green leaf of the mustard family commonly used in salads and soups, and is widely acknowledged to be a 'superfood' with high levels of nutrients, minerals and health-protecting compounds. Used in a lots of detoxing diets.

Watercress is rich in Vitamins A and C, iron, iodine and phosphorus. It can be used in the treatment of: skin problems, bronchitis, winter colds or flu, liver or kidney fatigue, sinusitis... Watercress has been used as part of a holistic response to cancer of the lungs, larynx, esophagus, prostate, bladder, uterus, stomach and intestines.

Eating watercress daily can significantly reduce DNA damage to blood cells, which is considered to be an important trigger in the development of cancer, scientists have revealed. The research, carried out by the University of Ulster, Coleraine, and published in February's American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that in addition to reducing DNA damage, a sensible daily portion of watercress also increased the ability of those cells to resist further DNA damage caused by free radicals.

As in anything else you ingest overdoing may be dangerous to the body; Could cause cystitis in some people with a tendancy to have frequent UTI's (urinary tract infections) and its medicinal use is not advised for those who have a delicate stomach or suffer from acidosis or heartburn. Excessive or prolonged use can lead to kidney problems. The operative being excessive prolonged? Some doctors advise against its use during pregnancy.

Unusual but effective for anorexia in the ill; Watercress is particularly valuable for its antiscorbutic qualities and has been used as such from the earliest times. As a salad it promotes appetite. Culpepper says that the leaves bruised or the juice will free the face from blotches, spots and blemishes, when applied as a lotion.

I recommend lightly cooking watercress, or mixing it into soups for those who do not like the slightly metallic taste. Wash very, very thoroughly if you want to add it to salads. It's somewhat bitter at certain times of the year, but it adds a wonderful crispness when eaten raw. Chock full of Vitamin A and many other important nutrients, watercress is among the top five healthiest plants to eat. Any plant with such a dark green chlorophyll base is bound to be super nutritious.

Here is a very popular and effective detoxing recipe!

HIGH-CALCIUM RICH SOUP.

*2 Quarts soy milk.
*1 Standard package of watercress or one large bunch.
*1 Large red potato with skin.
*3 Small chopped shallot onions.
*1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil.
*6 Vegetarian bouillon cubes.
*1 Clove garlic, crushed.
--Mince and sauté the shallots in the olive oil in a large pot to caramelize.
--Add soy milk and bring to simmer, light boil.
--Slice the potato and course chop the greens.
--Add the bouillon cubes.
--Add potato and watercress, simmer for 15 minutes.
--Puree the mixture through a food processor or blender.
--Add sea salt, pepper and Bragg's Liquid Aminos to taste.

Besides being high in calcium, vitamin C and antioxidant Beta-carotene, it contains vitamin E and is a natural antibiotic, so very effective soup for the infirmed?

In some areas finding watercress in the winter can be daunting if not impossible? Kale or Collards can be substituted and will work better if you mix both?

Prescription Drug Deaths Skyrocket 68 Percent Over Five Years

(NewsTarget) Poisoning from prescription drugs has risen to become the second-largest cause of unintentional deaths in the United States, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, researchers found that deaths from prescription drugs rose from 4.4 per 100,000 people in 1999 to 7.1 per 100,000 in 2004.

This increase represents a jump from 11,000 people to almost 20,000 in the span of five years.

Among the 20,000 that died, more than 8,500 ? double the number from 1999 -- were from "other and unspecified drugs."

Psychotherapeutic drugs, like antidepressants and sedatives, nearly doubled from 671 deaths to 1,300.

Age-wise, the biggest jump was among people aged 15 to 24, which the CDC report says relates to recreational prescription drug use and a jump in cocaine use.

However, all other age groups except the elderly over-75 group saw increases of more than 35 percent on a per 100,000 scale in prescription drug deaths ? including a nearly 90 percent jump for the late Baby Boomer generation (ages 45 to 54) and a more than 90 percent for people aged 55 to 64. Mike Adams, a consumer health advocate and outspoken critic of pharmaceutical companies, said that the drug industry is freely killing Americans.

"The entire drug industry, including the monopolistic drug giants and their FDA co-conspirator, has clearly become the single greatest threat to the health and safety of the American people," Adams said. "And yet the FDA continues to push more drugs onto more Americans than ever before, all while pretending these drugs are safe and effective when, in reality, they are neither. Today's pharmaceutical industry is a massive fraud being perpetrated against the American people, propped up by illegal trade practices, monopolistic behavior and outright criminal behavior on the part of the FDA."

One caveat of the report is that the data used did not allow suicides to be separated from other drug deaths, meaning there may be inherent errors because it was impossible to tell after death the intent or reason for a person's death from prescription drugs.

"Some of these deaths might have been suicides, although not classified as such, and some deaths categorized as suicides or of undetermined intent might have been unintentional and therefore not analyzed in this study. The extent of this error is not known," the report states.

However, statistics from the web site suicide.org state that in 2001, nearly 5,200 deaths came from self-poisoning, which includes not only abusing prescription drugs but also overdosing on over-the-counter drugs and ingesting lethal chemicals.

USDA Bars Planting of Rice Suspected of GMO Taint

WASHINGTON - The US Agriculture Department ordered seed dealers on Monday not to sell a long-grain rice seed that may contain a genetic modification not approved for planting.

USDA issued "emergency action notifications" to distributors to prevent planting of Clearfield CL131 seed. Similar orders will be issued to farmers to prevent use of the seed until USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection tests the rice.

Arkansas state officials say the Clearfield variety apparently carries the Liberty Link RICE601 gene material, a GMO strain made by Bayer CropScience. The rice variety disrupted the US rice industry in the summer of 2006 after the material, which was not cleared for food use, was found in commercial bins in Arkansas and Missouri.

BASF Agricultural Products, said late on Monday, that it is removing all Clearfield CL131 rice seed from the marketplace. BASF Agricultural is a unit of German chemical group BASF AG.

APHIS Administrator Ron DeHaven said his agency acted "because the genetic material detected in Clearfield CL131 seed might be regulated, in which case it would not be approved for commercial use." USDA was informed last week of the potential problem by BASF, which developed the seed, and by Ag Horizon, licensed by BASF to market the seed.

"BASF notified the USDA immediately after becoming aware of the laboratory findings and we continue to work cooperatively with USDA on this situation," Andy Lee, a director with BASF said in a statement.

Clearfield 131 was not developed as a genetically engineered variety. It is popular among US rice growers because it is resistant to red rice weed.

USDA, through its own testing, is in the process of confirming the results reported by BASF, said DeHaven.

BASF said it remains committed to the Clearfield technology and is working with Bayer CropScience to "determine the scope and source of the GM presence in Clearfield seed."

Last week, APHIS said trace levels of a previously deregulated genetically engineered trait had been identified in Clearfield CL131.
