We awoke to 18" to 24" drifts around our 2.5 acres... As the snow continues for the third day I sit and watch the beauty of the country side.... By eleven or twelve in the morning it will be but a memory as melts down to just patches of white. Then the next wave will come in and give us the white ground only to leave as soon as it stops... The moisture is helping and we are hoping for a few more days of it... Grapes contain fiber, but does any of that fiber make its way through the wine making process? To answer that question, researchers in Spain recently tested several varieties of wine. Results showed that white is pretty low in fiber, but some red wines contain as much as eight times more fiber than the whites. The highest fiber content was found in a premium Spanish wine that blends tempranillo and monastrell grapes. Turns out, a liter of this red vino contains about the same amount of fiber as a tomato.

In Medicare Maze, Some Get Tangled in Two Drug Plans

KITTANNING, Pa. ? Having struggled to fathom Medicare's new drug coverage, tens of thousands of beneficiaries are perplexed to find themselves actively enrolled in two prescription drug plans at the same time.

Shirley D. Beer, who lives in a mobile home here in western Pennsylvania, illustrates the predicament. Mrs. Beer was assigned to one insurance plan by the federal government, then exercised her right to choose another plan and now seems deeply embedded in both.

The first plan still carries her on its rolls and pays for some of her prescriptions, even though she declared four months ago that she wanted to drop out and had joined the second plan, which covers most of the 12 medications she takes for heart problems, high blood pressure and other chronic conditions.

Many Medicare beneficiaries like Mrs. Beer are entangled in two live plans ? two "hot plans," in the lingo of pharmacists. The situation leaves patients at risk of being charged two premiums or incorrect co-payments.

The Bush administration acknowledged the problem in a recent memorandum to insurers.

"Numerous beneficiaries have switched plans," the memorandum said. "Our processing systems have not always sent the enrollment and disenrollment information to the appropriate plans." As a result, it said, "many (possibly all) of the beneficiaries who switched plans are active on enrollment files at multiple plans."

The situation illustrates the "computer glitches" that officials say have bedeviled the program since enrollment began in November.

The Medicare agency said it was working with insurers to resolve the "enrollment discrepancies." But it is proceeding with caution because, it said, a sudden, unexpected mass disenrollment could provoke a flood of inquiries and complaints to insurers and the government from puzzled beneficiaries.

Mrs. Beer, a 78-year-old widow who lives here outside Pittsburgh on a government check of $603 a month, said that her first plan, Gateway, "did not want to let me go," and that the second plan, offered by WellCare, had yet to send her an insurance card.

Medicare records show that Mrs. Beer is now enrolled in WellCare's Signature plan. But she continues to receive mail from Gateway certifying that she is a member. And Gateway's automated telephone information system verifies that she still has coverage.

"This is enough to drive any sane person crazy," Mrs. Beer said, expressing frustration at the uncertainty of her situation.

Pharmacists and beneficiaries around the country report similar experiences. Christopher J. Decker, executive vice president of the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin, said "it happens fairly routinely" that pharmacists find patients enrolled in two drug plans.

"The plans are often willing to cover the same prescription for the same beneficiary but charge different co-payments," Mr. Decker said. "This creates confusion and problems for patients and pharmacists alike."

James M. Maister, a pharmacist in Lutz, Fla., north of Tampa, said that in some cases involving Medicare patients enrolled in two plans, "both plans have automatic deductions scheduled from the patient's Social Security check."

Health care providers in Florida said they had alerted federal officials because they worried that unscrupulous pharmacists might submit duplicate claims for the same prescription. In an e-mail response, Marisa B. Duarte, an employee in the Atlanta regional office of the federal Medicare agency, said, "We are still working out systems glitches, so having someone enrolled in two plans is common." Federal caseworkers can "verify the exact plan," Ms. Duarte added.

In his radio address on Saturday, President Bush defended the drug benefit. "This new coverage is saving seniors money on their drug premiums," Mr. Bush said. "The typical senior will end up spending about half of what they used to spend on prescription drugs each year."

Under the Medicare drug program, millions of low-income people are entitled to extra help that eliminates their premiums and deductibles and sharply reduces their co-payments.

But when a beneficiary switches plans, Medicare typically provides information on the person's low-income status to only one of the two plans. The other may still be providing coverage without realizing that the person is entitled to a low-income subsidy. This helps explain why some low-income beneficiaries have received bills for premiums they do not owe - $25 or $35 a month - while others have been charged $40 for a drug at the pharmacy, when their co-payments are not supposed to exceed $5.

LENA'S COMMENT: If you op out of one plan into another be sure and followup within 10 to 14 days after changing to make sure you are not still enrolled in the first plan...

Unique and Interesting; While most everyone who eats it regularly say it's the sweetest best tasting fruit that exists!

Annonaceae most commonly known as Cherimoya (U.S., Latin America), Custard Apple (U.K. and Commonwealth), Chirimoya, Chirimolla.

A mouthwateringly delicious, sweet, creamy, subtropical fruit combining the exotic flavors of pineapple, papaya, passionfruit, banana, mango and lemon in one luscious bite. The cherimoya is believed to be native to the inter-Andean valleys of Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. Seeds from Mexico were planted in California (Carpinteria) in 1871.

Conical or somewhat heart-shaped, 4 to 8 inches long and up to 4 inches in width, weighing on the average 5-1/2 to 18 ounces, but the largest fruits may reach 5 pounds in weight. The skin, thin or thick, may be smooth with fingerprint-like markings or covered with conical or rounded protuberances. The sweet, juicy, white flesh is melting, subacid and very fragrant. The fruit is of a primitive form with spirally arranged carpels, resembling a raspberry. Each segment of flesh surrounds a single hard black bean-like seed. The fruit size is generally proportional to the number of seeds within. They ripen October to May.

The fruit turns a pale green or creamy yellow color as they reach maturity. Color change is not marked in cool weather. They should be picked when still firm and allowed to soften at room temperature. Ripe fruit will give to soft pressure. Overripe fruit will be dark brown. Fruit left on the tree too long will usually crack or split and begin to decay. If you are lucky enough to have one of these trees growing in you yard you should know how to pick the fruit It should be clipped rather than pulled from the tree. Cut the stem close to the fruit so it won't puncture other fruit during storage.

Lots of good nutrients such as vitamins A, C, D, E, B6, B12, K, Retinol, Alpha Carotene, Beta Carotene, Lycopene, Lutein+Zeaxanthin, Beta, Gamma and Delta Tocopherols, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate and Pantothenic Acid. Not too shabby in minerals department either, with Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium.

This fruit is very rich in amino acids making them digestive joys and healthy with; Tryptophan, Threonine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Cystine, Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, Valine, Arginine, Histidine, Alanine, Aspartic acid, Glutamic acid, Glycine, Proline, Serine and Hydroxyproline.

Toxic Seeds:
The seeds are crushed and used as insecticide. Some have said they have witnessed blindness resulting from "the juice of the crushed seeds coming in contact with the eyes." I cannot say if that is true or just a tale that has gone around over the centuries. The seeds do contain several alkaloids: caffeine, reticuline, anonaine, liriodenine, and lanuginosine.

In Mexico, rural people toast, peel and pulverize 1 or 2 seeds and take the powder with water or milk as a potent emetic and cathartic. Mixed seed powder with grease and used to kill lice and is applied on skin disorders caused from parasites. A decoction of the skin of the fruit is taken to relieve pneumonia.

The cherimoya flesh, when ripe, is most commonly eaten out of hand or scooped with a spoon from a cut open fruit. It really needs no embellishment but some people like to add a few drops of lime juice. Occasionally it is seeded and added to fruit salads or used for making sherbet or ice cream. Something I, as yet, have not tried. Another really refreshing and healthful use is as a Colombian type drink; crushed and strained juice, add a slice of lemon and dilute with ice-water to make a refreshing soft drink. The fruit has also been fermented to produce an alcoholic beverage in some cultures. Although it is best eaten straight out of its skin here is a really exotic salad that is found in some high end restaurants;

Cherimoya Fruit Salad
1 cherimoya
2 oranges
2 apples
2 avocados

Peel, seed and cut cherimoya into chunks. Wash and cut apples into eighths (do not remove skin) and core fruit. Peel oranges and cut into slices. Cut slices in half, forming half-circles of orange. Peel and pit avocados and cut into eighths. On a bed of lettuce, arrange alternating slices of apple, orange and avocado in a circle. Top with cherimoya chunks. Serve with poppy seed or light vinaigrette dressing. Or try this dressing: Combine 1/4 cup each; plain yogurt and mayonnaise; add 4 tablespoons cherimoya puree. Makes 6-8 servings.

FDA Issues Warning on Dietary Supplements

WASHINGTON (AP) - The government has told companies that make and sell two dietary supplements with synthetic steroids that their products are classified as unapproved drugs and cannot be sold legally.

The products, promoted for building muscle and increasing strength, may cause serious long-term health problems, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday.

The agency said that anyone who has bought the products to stop taking them and return them to their place of purchase.

The agency issued warning letters for:

_Anabolic Xtreme Superdrol, manufactured for Anabolic Resources LLC of Gilbert, Ariz., and distributed by Supplements To Go of Cincinnati.

_Methyl-1-P, manufactured for Legal Gear of Brighton, Mich., and distributed by Affordable Supplements of Wichita, Kan.

Among the problems the FDA said are associated with anabolic steroids are liver toxicity; testicular atrophy and male infertility; masculinization of women; breast enlargement in males; short stature in children; harmful cholesterol levels; and potentially higher risks of heart attack and stroke.

A man who answered the phone at Affordable Supplements and declined to give his name said he could not comment. Legal Gear had no telephone listing. Messages left with Anabolic Resources and Supplements To Go were not immediately returned.

The action came on the same day that a consumer expert told the House Government Reform Committee that dietary supplements should undergo safety testing before being allowed on the market.

The 1994 law that allows supplements to be sold without government approval "created serious regulatory loopholes that have opened the floodgates to thousands of untested dietary supplement products," Janell Mayo Duncan of Consumers Union said.

Examples of dietary supplements include vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs and botanical products. Supplements have grown to a $20 billion market in the United States, C. Lee Peeler of the Federal Trade Commission told the committee.

While many supplements are safe and useful, Duncan said the absence of FDA supervision has resulted in a growing number of questionable products that would not be allowed on the market if they had been subject to safety testing.

Duncan urged that supplement makers be required to advise the FDA if they become aware of serious problems associated with their products.

Peeler noted that the FTC has filed more than 100 actions over the past decade challenging false of unsubstantiated claims for supplements.

LENA'S COMMENT: Whether it's chemical or natural "steroids" are steroids and dangerous to the body... Also know your manufacturer of supplements to assure that you get the best and safe... This is actually a veiled put down of supplements even though they have thrown in a small blurb saying "Many supplements are safe." The headlines are all that a lot of people read and never bother to go further... So reading the headline will leave a person to think all supplements are bad! This comes from the FDA's inability to control supplements and their continuing try to take them over and not for our benefit but so most if not all can be removed and give the drug companies the ability to produce them and mark the prices up 100% to 1000% as they do drugs...
