Greetings and thank your for
being an optin subscriber!
Stress level is at it's highest
this time of the year with most of us. Only one month to getting those taxes done on
April 15th... As a rule I'm done by this time but this year I've been
snowed under, so this week was supposed to be dedicated to getting all the stuff to my
tax gal ready for Uncle Sam's bit... Well, that has had a kink put in it
with my nephew's death taking up a couple of days of the week pushing me
to really buckle down and work at it... Adding to the stress so I am making sure I don't shirk on my daily supplements to assure my
body the best it can be to handle the stress and get through this week
with my health in tact...
Friday's ezine will go out
late Friday evening as the Wake for my nephew is Thursday evening and
the Funeral Friday morning but we will return Friday evening and I will
distribute the ezine announcement at that time. I had thought I would
have to not publish one day this week but can manage to not interrupt
anything the way it turned out...

Something To Think About

Moves to Baja Profit Tech
Firms... Low costs and
links with San Diego have created an expanding medical device industry
in the region, spurring new entrepreneurial dreams.
By Evelyn Iritani,
March 10, 2006
TIJUANA - This border city - perhaps best known for tunnel-digging drug
smugglers, bottomless margaritas and maquiladoras that churn out cheap
toys ? is quietly transforming itself into a high-tech manufacturing
hub.
Although thousands of Baja California residents still live in squatter
camps without electricity or running water, pockets of technical
innovation are cropping up in unlikely places. A new report says
northwest Mexico is reaping the benefits of an ambitious government
program aimed at leveraging the region's low costs and proximity to
leading-edge firms in San Diego.
In heavily guarded industrial parks a few miles south of U.S. territory,
Mexican workers are producing implantable medical devices and other
sophisticated products for foreign firms eager to take advantage of
lower production costs and hire high-skilled workers for bargain wages.
Faced with fierce competition from China and other low-cost countries,
dozens of plants in Baja closed their doors in 2001 and 2002, shedding
about 51,000 jobs. But Baja officials said they have reversed that
trend, overseeing the creation of 78,000 jobs in the last three years,
many of them higher-paying positions. The region now boasts the highest
average wages in Mexico.
U.S. medical device firms such as Medtronic Inc. and DJ Orthopedics Inc.
employ 23,700 people in Baja California, compared with 6,000 working in
the industry in San Diego. Last year, Wilson Greatbatch Technologies
Inc., a producer of components for implantable medical devices, closed
its facility in Carson City, Nev., and opened a 144,000-square-foot
plant here.
Of the more than 60 medical device firms operating in Baja, at least 40
have U.S. parent companies and 13 of those have a significant San Diego
presence, according to the report by San Diego Dialogue, which is
affiliated with UC San Diego.
Even veteran observers of Mexico such as Kenn Morris, one of the
report's authors and a cross-border consultant, are impressed by the
technical sophistication south of the border. Facilities there not only
produce heart valves and pacemaker circuitry but provide parts for U.S.
Longbow missiles and software programming for Samsung and other
multinational firms.
"It was a very big surprise to us that [the biomedical] industry we
considered so strong in San Diego was more than three times as large in
Baja California," Morris said.
In Baja, companies can hire scientific talent at half the salary level
of American tech centers and benefit from rent, utility and other costs
that are at least 40% below the going rates in the U.S., according to
executives here. Factories can supply U.S. firms that need a steady flow
of components for their "just-in-time" production.
Baja's economy still faces huge challenges. Tijuana's business leaders
have warned the police that an escalation in kidnappings and violent
crime could scare away investors, said Roberto Quijano, an attorney and
official with Coparmex, a national business confederation. A big part of
the problem, he said, is the shortage of adequate housing and social
services for the 80,000 newcomers that stream into the city every year
in search of work. Rapid development is also putting a strain on the
region's water, sewage and energy systems.
Along with crime and infrastructure problems, companies sometimes must
grapple with the Mexican bureaucracy and frustrating delays ? for both
personnel and products ? at U.S. border crossings.
But John Riley, chief executive of BC Manufacturing, which helps set up
and manage Mexican operations for foreign firms, said the biggest
barrier to investment is perceptions. Many U.S. executives still need
convincing that Mexico has grown beyond "a guy leaning against a
lamppost with a beer in his hand and an antenna sticking out of his
sombrero."
Andrew Kinross, a medical device consultant, said some U.S. firms
remained hesitant about moving sophisticated production to places like
Mexico because of quality concerns. "If it's going into a person's body,
it's got to be 100% perfect," he said.
Medtronic's sprawling Tijuana facility, located in an industrial area
minutes from the Otay Mesa border crossing, is evidence of Baja's
ability to move beyond low-tech assembly jobs.
Gerardo de la Concha, director of Medtronic Mexico, said many factories
in Tijuana had been certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
to produce the most sophisticated Class III devices, including those
that could be implanted in people's bodies.
"An engineer is an engineer," he said. "It's just a matter of the level
of training you give to these people."
De la Concha said he invests heavily in his 1,200 employees, giving
technicians at least two weeks of training in a dummy laboratory before
they join the production line.
At a sterile "clean room" in Medtronic's plant here, rows of young women
swathed from head to toe in protective clothing make aneurysm stent
grafts by stitching rows of intricate rings made of advanced materials
onto long polyester tubes. The stents are inserted into heart patients'
blocked or weakened arteries to prevent them from collapsing. It takes
17 people a total of 12 hours to produce one aneurysm stent graft.
Almost all of the company's raw materials must be imported because U.S.
suppliers haven't migrated to the region. After mad cow disease surfaced
in the U.S. in 2003, the Mexican government halted beef imports. De la
Concha had to get special permission to import the bovine tissue used to
make valves.
But De la Concha said his Mexican factories could still make
high-quality products at half of what it would cost in the United States
and deliver them to Medtronic's Minnesota headquarters faster than
factories in other parts of the world.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================
Can an optimistic
attitude make a difference to your health?
For all you pessimists out there, the bad news is it can. According to
the Mayo Clinic Proceedings, between 1962 and 1965, Mayo researchers had
839 patients take a personality test. They classified 124 of these
patients as optimists, 197 as pessimists and the rest were considered
mixed. Then the researchers waited 30 years to find out what happened to
the people in their study. They were able to trace 723 people, and what
they found was rather dramatic.
Optimists, and even those who were mixed but with a generally favorable
outlook, had a 19-percent better chance of surviving during the 30-year
period than the pessimists did.

Stop Wyeth and the FDA: Your Hormones
Are in Danger
Bio-identical hormones are in danger, and we must act quickly to
protect your right to use these safe, effective, natural therapies.
Wyeth, one of the world's
pharmaceutical giants, filed a Citizen Petition with the FDA
requesting that compounding pharmacies be prohibited from providing
natural hormones - and we only have until April 4, 2006, to stop
them.
Show Me the Money
For years, Wyeth counted
Premarin (conjugated estrogen) and Prempro (Premarin and synthetic
progesterone) among their bestselling drugs. However, since 2002,
when a large, well-publicized clinical trial showed that these drugs
increased risk of breast cancer, blood clots, heart attacks and
strokes, sales have plummeted from more than $2 billion in 2002 to
$880 million in 2004.
The petition, which is rife
with inaccuracies, is supported by a number of medical societies and
patient advocacy groups that have financial ties to Wyeth. In fact,
even the FDA has financial ties to Wyeth, reaping in the form of
"drug user fees" required by the agency. Folks, this isn't about
protecting women from the "dangers" of natural hormones. It's about
protecting Wyeth's bottom line.
Let's Fight Back
We must hold off this threat to
freedom of choice in the medical marketplace. Voice your opposition
to the Wyeth petition at the
FDA website. Simply fill in the required information, followed
by your comments. Here's what I wrote:
"You taking away my right to have a compounding pharmacy fill a
prescription for bio-identical hormones (hormones identical to those
made in the human body) because Wyeth is losing money on horse
estrogen and synthetic progesterone is unconscionable. I vigorously
oppose your attempts to do so and will oppose them for as long as
necessary to maintain my freedom of choice in the medical
marketplace."
Act today. The comment filing period ends on April 4, 2006.

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Unique and
Interesting; While most everyone who eats it regularly say it's the
sweetest best tasting fruit that exists!
Annonaceae most commonly known as Cherimoya (U.S., Latin America),
Custard Apple (U.K. and Commonwealth), Chirimoya, Chirimolla.
A mouthwateringly delicious, sweet, creamy, subtropical fruit combining
the exotic flavors of pineapple, papaya, passionfruit, banana, mango and
lemon in one luscious bite. The cherimoya is believed to be native to
the inter-Andean valleys of Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. Seeds from
Mexico were planted in California (Carpinteria) in 1871.
Conical or somewhat heart-shaped, 4 to 8 inches long and up to 4 inches
in width, weighing on the average 5-1/2 to 18 ounces, but the largest
fruits may reach 5 pounds in weight. The skin, thin or thick, may be
smooth with fingerprint-like markings or covered with conical or rounded
protuberances. The sweet, juicy, white flesh is melting, subacid and
very fragrant. The fruit is of a primitive form with spirally arranged
carpels, resembling a raspberry. Each segment of flesh surrounds a
single hard black bean-like seed. The fruit size is generally
proportional to the number of seeds within. They ripen October to May.
The fruit turns a pale green or creamy yellow color as they reach
maturity. Color change is not marked in cool weather. They should be
picked when still firm and allowed to soften at room temperature. Ripe
fruit will give to soft pressure. Overripe fruit will be dark brown.
Fruit left on the tree too long will usually crack or split and begin to
decay. If you are lucky enough to have one of these trees growing in you
yard you should know how to pick the fruit It should be clipped rather
than pulled from the tree. Cut the stem close to the fruit so it won't
puncture other fruit during storage.
Lots of good nutrients such as vitamins A, C, D, E, B6, B12, K, Retinol,
Alpha Carotene, Beta Carotene, Lycopene, Lutein+Zeaxanthin, Beta, Gamma
and Delta Tocopherols, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate and
Pantothenic Acid. Not too shabby in minerals department either, with
Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper,
Manganese and Selenium.
This fruit is very rich in amino acids making them digestive joys
and healthy with; Tryptophan, Threonine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine,
Methionine, Cystine, Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, Valine, Arginine,
Histidine, Alanine, Aspartic acid, Glutamic acid, Glycine, Proline,
Serine and Hydroxyproline.
Toxic Seeds:
The seeds are crushed and used as insecticide. Some have said they
have witnessed blindness resulting from "the juice of the crushed seeds
coming in contact with the eyes." I cannot say if that is true or just a
tale that has gone around over the centuries. The seeds do contain
several alkaloids: caffeine, reticuline, anonaine, liriodenine, and
lanuginosine.
In Mexico, rural people toast, peel and pulverize 1 or 2 seeds and take
the powder with water or milk as a potent emetic and cathartic. Mixed
seed powder with grease and used to kill lice and is applied on skin
disorders caused from parasites. A decoction of the skin of the fruit is
taken to relieve pneumonia.
The cherimoya flesh, when ripe, is most commonly eaten out of hand or
scooped with a spoon from a cut open fruit. It really needs no
embellishment but some people like to add a few drops of lime juice.
Occasionally it is seeded and added to fruit salads or used for making
sherbet or ice cream. Something I, as yet, have not tried. Another
really refreshing and healthful use is as a Colombian type drink;
crushed and strained juice, add a slice of lemon and dilute with
ice-water to make a refreshing soft drink. The fruit has also been
fermented to produce an alcoholic beverage in some cultures. Although it
is best eaten straight out of its skin here is a really exotic salad
that is found in some high end restaurants;
Cherimoya Fruit Salad
1 cherimoya
2 oranges
2 apples
2 avocados
Peel, seed and cut cherimoya into chunks. Wash and cut apples into
eighths (do not remove skin) and core fruit. Peel oranges and cut into
slices. Cut slices in half, forming half-circles of orange. Peel and pit
avocados and cut into eighths. On a bed of lettuce, arrange alternating
slices of apple, orange and avocado in a circle. Top with cherimoya
chunks. Serve with poppy seed or light vinaigrette dressing. Or try this
dressing: Combine 1/4 cup each; plain yogurt and mayonnaise; add 4
tablespoons cherimoya puree. Makes 6-8 servings.
Interesting and very tasty fruit, try it!

It's enough to make
your head spin Good for you. No, bad for you. No, good for you.
Conflicting medical news reports can leave consumers at a loss.
March 6, 2006
"Low-Fat Diet Does Not Cut Health Risks, Study Finds" (New York
Times, Feb. 8).
"Study Reverses Long-Held Ideas on Calcium's Use" (Los Angeles
Daily News, Feb. 16).
Just when you think you know what's good for your health, a new
medical study changes everything. As these headlines attest,
that's been happening a lot lately.
In the last month, the advantages of a low-fat diet have come
under fire, the benefits of calcium supplements have been called
into question and the dangers of hormone replacement therapy are
being reexamined.
These seemingly contradictory research findings have left people
confused and unsure of what action they should take in response
to the new information. An acquaintance put it this way at a
recent dinner party: "Suddenly things I had faith in have been
shown to be false. It leaves me a little disheartened ?
perplexed, for certain."
I, along with many other physicians, am also troubled by these
conflicting reports, or at least by the way they are being
interpreted and acted upon by their patients. We are concerned
that the media coverage of medical studies such as these does
not accurately represent the researchers' findings and may lead
people to take inappropriate ? even potentially dangerous ?
actions.
It seems our concerns may be well-founded. In a study published
last year, researchers at the University of Tennessee found
widespread problems in the quality of health-related reports
appearing in several top selling newspapers and news magazines,
as well as on the most popular news Internet sites. Articles
were rated as excellent if they were both complete and accurate,
fair if they were either incomplete or inaccurate and poor if
they suffered in both categories.
Of the 60 articles studied, none received an excellent rating.
Part of the problem is the spin the media puts on medical
stories and headlines in an attempt to draw in their audience. I
would go so far as to suggest that the media sometimes
deliberately distorts them to increase sales of magazines and
newspapers or raise television and radio ratings. Unfortunately,
this approach can overstate the significance of a research
study's findings and create misleading messages.
A recent article in the New York Times serves as a good example.
The article discussed results of the Women's Health Initiative
investigation into the effects of dietary fat. "The largest
study ever to ask whether a low-fat diet reduces the risk of
getting cancer or heart disease has found that the diet has no
effect," read the lead. The article went on to suggest that the
study was "the final word."
In fact, the findings of the study were far less conclusive than
the article implied. The study looked only at women older than
50 and followed them for only eight years. The fact that eight
years of low-fat eating did not appear to benefit older women
does not mean that it isn't potentially helpful to young women
or men (or, for that matter, older women who consume a low-fat
diet for a longer period of time). Unfortunately, the article
glossed over these possibilities.
In my opinion, the only conclusion that could be drawn from this
study is that women who eat poorly for the first 50 years of
their life cannot make up for it with just a few years of modest
dietary improvements.
Getting the story right is important because American men and
women respond to the media's messages. For example, the
publication of a study in 2002 that suggested hormone
replacement therapy increases the risk of heart disease led to a
substantial decline in hormone use in the months that followed.
A survey of women conducted by researchers at the University of
North Carolina School of Pharmacy found media coverage of the
study had significant influence on women's decisions to continue
using hormones or not.
The media cannot be blamed entirely for the confusion. Medical
studies are generally very complicated, and scientific data are
difficult to interpret. It is my belief that the medical
community has a responsibility to help reporters decipher and
interpret the information ? and ensure that stories get reported
accurately.
Until that happens, there are several things you can do to help
make sense of medical news stories. First, go beyond the
headlines. Sometimes the "fine print" is there ? you just need
to read the entire article or listen to the entire broadcast to
find it. Two, pay close attention to where you are getting your
information (and, for that matter, who they are going to for
theirs). Recognize that even the most reputable sources may not
always be reliable.
Most important: Don't rely on the media as your sole source of
information. Turn to medical experts for help. That doesn't mean
picking up the phone and calling your physician every time a
confusing new research finding is published. Government agencies
such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the
National Institutes of Health, and organizations such as the
American Heart Assn. and the American Cancer Society, frequently
respond to major news stories and synthesize their own opinions
about them.
Finally, keep in mind that one study is generally not enough to
warrant drastic action. To be convincing, the results must be
reproducible. Unfortunately, you might not hear much about the
studies that simply reproduce and reinforce established beliefs.
They often aren't considered newsworthy enough to make
headlines.

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~~^~^~^
U.N.: Greenhouse
Gases Hit High in 2004
Mar 14, 2006
GENEVA (AP) - "Greenhouse gases" in the Earth's atmosphere reached
record highs in 2004 and are still climbing, the World Meteorological
Organization said Tuesday.
"Global observations coordinated by WMO show that levels of carbon
dioxide, the most abundant greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, continue to
increase steadily and show no signs of leveling off," said Michel
Jarraud, secretary-general of the U.N. climate and weather agency.
The agency made no reference to global warming, which many scientists
have blamed on the heat-trapping greenhouse gases created in the burning
of fossil fuels. According to NASA, 2005 had the highest annual average
surface temperature worldwide since instrument recordings began in the
late 1800s.
But Leonard Barrie, chief of atmospheric research at WMO, said the
greenhouse gases clearly posed a problem.
"Given that the lifetime of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is 50 to
200 years depending on how you calculate it ... it doesn't take a
nuclear scientist to state that we're going to have this problem for a
long time," he told reporters at U.N. offices in Geneva.
"If we stop now CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, it would take 50 to 100
years before we were starting to see approaches to preindustrial
levels."
WMO said it based it based its findings for its first "Greenhouse Gas
Bulletin" on readings from 44 countries that were collected in Japan.
"Globally averaged concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous
oxide in the planet's atmosphere reached their highest ever recorded
levels in 2004," WMO said.
The agency said carbon dioxide was nearly half a percent higher in 2004
than the year before. Nitrous oxide has been rising steadily since 1988.
Methane has risen the most dramatically over the past two centuries, but
its growth has been slowing, WMO said.
