CDC Director: Better Tests Are Needed
ATLANTA (AP) - Doctors in the United States are "woefully underprepared"
to recognize the start of a disease outbreak or a release of toxic
chemicals, the chief of the CDC said Monday.
Better diagnostic tests are needed to help doctors detect unusual
diseases and substances in time to stop major outbreaks, said Dr. Julie
Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Gerberding spoke at the start of the International Conference on
Biomarkers for Toxicology and Molecular Epidemiology, which examines the
latest in biosensors and other technologies for detecting dangerous
substances.
"We need much more capability to rapidly diagnose exposure to these
emerging threats," Gerberding said.

In the survey of 567 non-pregnant women attending five rural gynecology
clinics, researchers found the use of all medications to be higher than
expected. Nine out of ten women reported taking one or more prescription
drugs, while 96% took over-the-counter medicines and 59% took herbal
supplements. The findings are reported in the Feb. 24 issue of the
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
That is a great report showing that women are getting smarter and using
healthier alternatives but it can create problems as well!
Researchers have found that at least 30 herbal supplements, including
ginkgo biloba, danshen, garlic, and borage seed oil, may increase the
risk of life-threatening bleeding among patients on Coumadin (blood
thinner).
"Clearly there is interaction between Coumadin and many of these
herbal medicines, but we are not really sure how big the problem is,"
University of Iowa cardiologist Brian Olshansky, MD, told WebMD in a
previous interview. "It is true that most people don't tell their
doctors exactly which herbal therapies they are on, but even when they
do the doctor doesn't always know what to tell the patient."
Herbal supplement use was slightly higher among the menopausal study
participants than among younger women. Tracy says this finding is
particularly significant because older women tend to take far more
prescription drugs than younger ones putting them at risk if their
doctor is not aware of their supplementing with herbs...
Mixing prescription medication with herbal medication is really wasting
money. Prescriptions contain chemicals that will cause herbals to be
null in lots of instances or cause one or the other to over react
creating dangers.
So do your research before mixing or better yet DO NOT MIX!

Nutrient Rich Little Known Grain:
One of the relatively unknown grains, tops in nutrients is Quinoa.
Pronounced keen-wah, this grain is grown in the Andes Mountains in South
America where it was once a staple food for the Incas.
Quinoa has a delicious light, nutty flavor. When it cooks, the grain
opens up to make tiny spirals. Quinoa contains all eight amino acids and
therefore has better protein value than most grains. A nutrient-dense
grain; perfect for those who have elevated needs, such as pregnant or
nursing mothers.
Vegetarians and people with food allergies will find quinoa a welcome
choice; it's gluten-free and provides a remarkable array of nutrients.
It's a complete protein comparable to milk, according to the World
Health Organization. For anybody who has an interest in health ? and for
the many people who have allergies to common grains ? it's a delicious
alternative."
Quinoa's greatest hurdle is that it's still relatively unknown to many
cooks, even those with an interest in whole foods and natural
approaches. For the many people who have limited food choices now you
can use quinoa.
A simple recipe for preparing quinoa;
1 cup quinoa
Pinch of sea salt
1 3/4 cups water
Rinse quinoa well with warm water and drain. Quinoa has a natural
coating called saponin that repels insects and birds that creates a
bitter taste. Rinsing with warm water removes the saponin.
Place rinsed quinoa, salt, and water in a pot. Bring to a boil, reduce
heat to low, cover, and let simmer 15-20 minutes, until all the water is
absorbed. Fluff with a fork before serving.
Makes 2 1/2-3 cups
For breakfast add a bit of honey and butter for a great
stick-to-the-stomach breakfast grain!
Eat in health and watch for next week's nutrient rich food

It seems like a vicious cycle. You exercise to lose weight, but the more
you exercise, the more you build up an appetite, and the more you eat.
Right?
Not so, says the International Journal of Obesity Related Medical
Disorders. Exercise doesn't increase appetite, and you won't
automatically eat more just because you've worked off a few extra
calories.
In fact, there is really no such thing as working up an appetite. What
there is, is working up to a feeling that you deserve a treat for all
that hard work.
What you have to watch out for is rewarding yourself for working or
playing hard by eating or drinking more calories than you've burned.
It's the emotion you have to watch or celebrate with clear, clean

How Industry Won the Battle of Pollution Control at
E.P.A.

Just six weeks into the Bush administration, Haley Barbour, a former
Republican party chairman who was a lobbyist for electric power
companies, sent a memorandum to Vice President Dick Cheney laying down a
challenge.
"The question is whether environmental policy still prevails over energy
policy with Bush-Cheney, as it did with Clinton-Gore," Mr. Barbour
wrote, and called for measures to show that environmental concerns would
no longer "trump good energy policy."
Mr. Barbour's memo was an opening shot in a two-year fight inside the
Bush administration for dominance between environmental protection and
energy production on clean air policy. One camp included officials, like
Mr. Cheney, who came from the energy industry. In another were enforcers
of environmental policy, led by Christie Whitman, a former Republican
governor of New Jersey.
The battle engaged some of the nation's largest power companies, which
were also among the largest donors to President Bush and other
Republicans. They were represented by Mr. Barbour and another
influential lobbyist, Marc Racicot, who also would later become chairman
of the Republican National Committee.
In an administration that puts a premium on keeping its internal
disputes private, this struggle went on well out of the public's view.
But interviews and documents trace the decisions in which the Bush
administration changed the nation's approach to environmental controls,
ultimately shifting the balance to the side of energy policy. Senior
officials at the Environmental Protection Agency, including Mrs.
Whitman, became isolated, former aides said, and several resigned.
