Wednesday I received a letter from Tommy Thompson, Secretary of
Health & Human Services in Washington DC. As I read I became livid at
what they are selling the seniors with their so-called "better" Medicare
Advantage coverage. Since I spent 20 years in medical offices while
billing and was gatekeeper (In charge of insurance coverage) for HMO's,
PPO's, EPO's and patient advocate between insurances and patients, I
think I know pretty much what they cover and what they don't. Being a
straight Medicare member now I have my book of benefits so I'm up on
Medicare as well therefore I feel qualified to make the following
statements!
What I discovered in the letter as ole Tommy tried to convince me that
the new medicare was going to do great things for me, I found that in
fact they have cut coverage, A LOT.
1st - In order to receive any of the so-called new services I
will have to enroll in MEDICARE ADVANTAGE - a senior HMO, which I
suspect the ADVANTAGE is supposed to fool me into believing that it's
better than what we now have. 2nd - the coverages that he talks about could be now had with any
senior plan in any HMO/PPO Senior Choice. Those HMO's/PPO's now cover
prescriptions with no deductibles and lower copay with a higher ceiling
on their prescription coverage. (Yes I know there is about 2 companies
that don't.) 3rd - The NEW MEDICARE ADVANTAGE, if I choose to join it, Is
giving the insurance companies a great deal more, as they can now lower
their prescription requirements, lower their ceiling coverage. They can
get paid $35 a month for prescription coverage plus the first $250 in
prescription and then 25% of each prescription between $250 - $2,250...
That comes to a bare minimum of $640 a year. A NOW EXISTING Senior HMO
patient pays $8 to $15 copay per prescription with no deductible and the
ceiling in most plans is $3,500 to $5,000. The medicare top is
$2,250.00. Math tells me that's a loss of a couple of thousands
dollars... Today most prescriptions are way over $100 per prescription,
which means you will pay $25 and up per prescription and if it's
something you take monthly that's another $300 a year, (oh yes you will
not be allowed to get more than a month or two at a time on this plan)
so we are up to a minimum of $940 a year out of pocket. Is that
Medicare Advantage of $25 per
prescription with the $35 a month and lower ceiling costs better or
worse? Not for me! 4th - The physical exam offered to new medicare subscribers
(within the first six months of membership), has always been a fact with
the HMO's, PPO's and EPO's and straight Medicare only they also covered
a YEARLY physical, which the NEW MEDICARE ADVANTAGE does not! The "new
coverage" will cover screening for heart disease and diabetes for those
at risk, meaning any family history of such. That's always been as well,
nothing new there... 5th - If I choose to become a MEDICARE ADVANTAGE member, I will
have less coverage than I could have obtained last year or earlier this
year had I joined any of the many senior choice HMO, PPO plans that
already exist... Unless I choose to become an HMO patient my medicare
does not change! It will benefit the insurance companies as the
government will pay them more than they have been in the past for less
coverage per patient... How does that benefit me or the many who are
going to buy into these lies? It doesn't!
If you are a member of a senior HMO/PPO/EPO watch for your coverage to
be lowered to fit the new MEDICARE ADVANTAGE rules. That always happens
as the government changes things so doe the insurance companies, watched
it happen for 20+ years!
Now tell me again Tommy G. Thompson, how does "Medicare Advantage"
become an advantage to seniors on fixed incomes that cannot qualify for
Medicaid?
The way I see it they are going to be paying through the
nose...
That's off my chest!!! I am so glad I got smart and got off my
prescribed medications years ago or I would be in the poor house on this
new Advantage plan... I don't take prescriptions and seldom ever see a
doctor of traditional medicine so it's not going to hurt me, but I have
family members who refuse to take charge of their lives and depend on
their doctors to prescribe medications and treatments that is going to
cost them arms and legs. My husband and I are healthy and do not take
prescriptions and I am so glad with this coming along... We take silver
water, for immune boosting and preventing illnesses, along with our
minerals and herbs...
Whatever your age you better take charge and do some detective work on
how to be healthy unless you are wealthy and can afford the traditional
world's medications...
Not only is it going to cost us more but it appears that it is going to

The last time I check the pentagon is part of the US
government entities.
The following article points out the forked tongue that exists in our
world today. One hand says, "Bush opposes the destruction of human
embryos that occurs when stem cells are extracted" Then the other hand
the same government hands out $240,000 to do stem cell research, which
they say they don't believe in. So is it yes it's okay or no it's not
okay? You sure wouldn't know from these actions...

Pentagon Gives Swedes Research Grant
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) - One of Sweden's leading universities announced
Wednesday it had received a $240,000 grant from the Pentagon to fund
stem cell research related to Parkinson's disease.
The embryonic stem cell lines to be used are among those approved by the
U.S. government for research supported by federal grants, Lund
University researcher Patrik Brundin told The Associated Press.
The university in Lund, in southern Sweden, said the Pentagon was
interested in Parkinson's disease "because it is seen as a model for
neurological diseases that can also be caused by toxic substances in
military contexts."
In 2001, President Bush restricted federal funding to stem cell lines
existing at that time, some of which were in Sweden.
Brundin said researchers would use lines being kept at Goteborg
University in Sweden's second-largest city, because no stem cells are
stored at Lund University.
Bush opposes the destruction of human embryos that occurs when stem
cells are extracted.
Stem cells are the body's building blocks and have the potential to
become many different types of cells. Scientists think the cells can be
coaxed into specific cells to repair organs or treat diseases such as
diabetes, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

True or False...almost all wellness deficiencies are part of the normal
aging process. There's nothing you can do about it.
True or False...all required nutrients are obtained from your average
daily food intake, therefore supplementation is a big waste of money.
The answers? False and False!
There are two major problems with the current food supply, they are:
* We eat too much...estimates are that 61% of the population is
overweight, and
* We are not getting the minimum amounts of the building blocks

In 1948 you could buy spinach that had 158 milligrams of iron per
hundred grams. By 1965, the maximum had dropped to 27 milligrams. In

vitamin B12 for healthy red blood cells. Sadly most of the vegetables
that supply cobalt in the diet now test zero.
The top soil over most of the land used to grow fruits and vegetables is
very depleted. This in turn produces crops that are severely low in the
necessary vitamins and mineral that our bodies need for optimum health.
The typical daily diet does not supply the necessary proteins, vitamins
and minerals to properly replace the dying cells in our internal and
external organs. If we fall short our immunity system is weakened
leaving us vulnerable to sickness and disease.
So...are you getting the 20 essential amino acids, 14 essential minerals
and 13 essential vitamins in your daily diet to insure your "good
health"?
Our fast paced lifestyles have prompted the food industry to produce
products that satisfy consumer demand. As a result, these quick to
prepare processed foods do not contain the proper nutrients to maintain

the logical answer is to allocate a portion of your food budget to

Folate Missing In Diet is Dangerous!
Alcohol consumption can create a folate deficiency. Other factors that
can lead to low folate levels include: smoking, oral contraceptives,
high intake of aspirin, general malnourishment, and certain drugs such
as the chemotherapy drug methotrexate.
Folate containing foods are; Citrus fruits, tomatoes, leafy green
vegetables, avocados, bananas, asparagus, whole grains, and pinto, navy
and kidney beans.
A high intake of folate can mask a vitamin B-12 deficiency in older
people, the FDA has mandated that folate supplements can be sold in
doses no greater than 800 mcg. Never mind that B-12 deficiency can be
easily avoided by eating meat, fish and eggs, or by taking B-12
supplements.
Supplements of folate are available as natural (folate) or synthetic
(folic acid). The daily recommended intake (DRI) of folate is 400
micrograms, but for those trying to lower homocysteine levels, at least
twice that amount is necessary.
It is recommended that you supplement with minerals and B vitamins along
with folate for maximum protection!

Nutrient Rich Little Known Grain:
One of the relatively unknown grains, tops in nutrients is Quinoa.
Pronounced keen-wah, this grain is grown in the Andes Mountains in South
America where it was once a staple food for the Incas.
Quinoa has a delicious light, nutty flavor. When it cooks, the grain
opens up to make tiny spirals. Quinoa contains all eight amino acids and
therefore has better protein value than most grains. A nutrient-dense
grain; perfect for those who have elevated needs, such as pregnant or
nursing mothers.
Vegetarians and people with food allergies will find quinoa a welcome
choice; it's gluten-free and provides a remarkable array of nutrients.
It's a complete protein comparable to milk, according to the World
Health Organization. For anybody who has an interest in health - and for
the many people who have allergies to common grains - it's a delicious
alternative."
Quinoa's greatest hurdle is that it's still relatively unknown to many
cooks, even those with an interest in whole foods and natural
approaches. For the many people who have limited food choices now you
can use quinoa.
A simple recipe for preparing quinoa;
1 cup quinoa
Pinch of sea salt
1 3/4 cups water
Rinse quinoa well with warm water and drain. Quinoa has a natural
coating called saponin that repels insects and birds that creates a
bitter taste. Rinsing with warm water removes the saponin.
Place rinsed quinoa, salt, and water in a pot. Bring to a boil, reduce
heat to low, cover, and let simmer 15-20 minutes, until all the water is
absorbed. Fluff with a fork before serving.
Makes 2 1/2-3 cups
For breakfast add a bit of honey and butter for a great
stick-to-the-stomach breakfast grain!
Eat in health and watch for next week's nutrient rich food

Spring is is sprung and flowers popping out all over.
Women all over are thinking about or engaging in
spring cleaning their house.
As most women know if you let a house go without
periodic cleanings you will find that the furniture and
walls lose their luster and brightness and will rot and
need to be replaced. So too does our body, trouble
is, we don't have a replacement body!!
Example:
We had elderly neighbors who lived by us for about 20
years that covered all their furniture with cloth and
plastic to keep them clean so she wouldn't have to do
the clean them. She thought that was the way to less
work at her age. They had one chair each in the living
room that they sat in and the couch went unused, as
all their friends had died years before therefore no
visitors, so the other furniture was unused. After he
died, she became bedfast and we took her into our
home and cared for her until she died a few short
months later. My husband and I was left the job
of disposing of their estate.
We sat down on their new looking couch to
contemplate where to start and it started to rip apart
underneath our bottoms. As we started to move their
possessions for clearance just about everything was
rotted and fell apart as we touched it, except for the
two chairs their bed, stove and dining table which was
cleaned and used regularly
Same thing happens with our body. You may not realize it
until one day it rips apart too in the form of an illness!
Sitting in front of the boop tube and/or computer desk
makes for the same situation as our late neighbors
possessions. Winter is particularly bad couch potato
season. Our body's require usage (exercise) and a
internal cleaning as much as furniture, in order to
stay healthy!
Just as a home closed up due to the cold weather,
builds up stale air and stagnant dust and mites,
needs a spring cleaning. So too does our body
need a spring cleaning to shine, feel and look
bright for the warm weather ahead.
Winter is the time usually spent sit in front of the
fire keeping warm and indulging on fatty fried
foods and baked goodies that helps heat the
house when the oven is on... It seems our body
craves certain fatty, sweet heavy types of
comfort food in the cold months Those foods
also act as a mechanism for insulating us from
the cold.
Very few of us have access to hot houses with
fresh fruits and vegetables where we can run
right out and pick fresh daily. Nor can we all
live in Southern California, South Texas or Florida
where we have access to fresh fruits and
vegetables daily. Therefore the body starts to
become clogged and stagnant. Results are that
our internal body builds up stagnate poisons
and pollution and needs to be removed before
causing serious illnesses.
In some cultures a yearly spring ritual announces
the beginning spring and assures an enjoyable
summer.
Just as a spring housecleaning preserves a house
so does a cleansing of our bodies. A house cleaning
of our bodies is cleaning the temple of our soul
making for a healthy body, a healthy mind, long life
and contentment!
Here are some tools for your Internal Spring Cleaning:
Start with EXERCISE: a good BRISKwalk 4 to 6 days
a
week to stimulate your immune system. If you can't
walk a full 30 or 45 minutes in the beginning start with
a 15 or 20-minute walk and work up to 30 to 45 minutes
Don't forget to stretch your leg muscles before starting
your walk!
For infirmed who are confined to bed, get the blood
moving by brisk rubbing with a soft bristle brush or a
wash cloth wrapped around the hand and rub each
individual part of your body first thing on awaking, or
have someone give you a deep tissue massage. Either
way should be followed by drinking lots of clean
filtered/purified water. Who knows, you may be able
to get up and around after doing your internal spring
cleaning!
Not all of the following herbs are necessary but by combining
several you will find a faster and more thorough cleansing
effect, which will leave you feeling invigorated.
In our house spring was time for eating wild poke salid
(not a spelling mistake) picking and eating in various
ways. We went hunting for the first sprigs to poke their
heads out and we consumed them in large quantities
steamed and sautéed. I found out as I got older that
Poke Salid is a great blood cleaner besides filled with
lots of healthy nutrients.
Other great natural blood cleansers are;
ALFALFA: Cleanses and builds the blood
BLACK WALNUT: An effective treatment for intestinal worms
and parasites. It helps to remove the fatty materials and toxic
buildup in the body out of the body.
CASCARA SAGRADA: Increases the secretions of the
stomach, liver and pancreas which is expelling poisonous
secretions. In the Spanish language it is called sacred bark
due to its potent cleansing and laxative qualities.
DANDELION ROOT: Most of us that have lawns have an
abundant supply of this and it is an excellent liver detoxifier
simple pick a few and add to your dinner salad.
FENUGREEK: Encourages the removal of toxic waste from
the lymphatic system and lungs.
GOLDENSEAL: A detoxifier of the blood, liver, kidneys and
skin. Also very effective in treating amoebic dysentery (giardia)
when used over a ten-day period. Should not be used longer
than ten days.
HAWTHORN BERRY: Great for strengthening the heart and
a fantastic digestive aid which helps to utilize the nutrients
ingested.
LICORICE ROOT: Known as the great detoxifier; it strengthens
digestion and detoxes poisons built up in the gastrointestinal
system.
MILK THISTLE: One of the most potent liver protecting herbs.
Over 100 studies have shown that this herb not only protects
the liver but generate new liver cells. Milk Thistle is a strong
cleanser and inhibits free radicals.
MULLEIN: Known for its expectorant and soothing properties
to the lungs and other internal organs.
PARSLEY: Not only attractive when decorating your food but
a great diuretic and also aids in the digestion system.
RED CLOVER: Known for its blood purifiers and also clears
the skin and used to treat inflamed lungs.
YELLOW DOCK: Touted for its purifying properties that cleanse
the skin, liver and blood. Used as a tonic and laxative but also
builds the blood and helps treat anemia.
IONIC LIQUID MINERALS: not only balances out the mineral
system but detoxes as it does.
An enhanced Internal Spring Cleaning requires eating three or
four meals with mostly dark green vegetables. My favorites
steamed or raw are swiss chard, kale, spinach or mustard
greens with a touch of flax oil, lemon juice, sea salt, garlic
powder, onion powder and lemon pepper.
Now get your body tuned up to enjoy the soon-to-be warm
weather and give your body the oomph to enjoy your summer
outings!
BOSTON (AP) - A third of the way into a pact between New England and
Eastern Canada to cut greenhouse gas emissions 12 percent by 2010,
carbon dioxide emissions in the region appear to be growing, in part
because people are driving more and using bigger, less-fuel efficient
vehicles.
Environmental officials also say that while efforts are under way to cap
power plant pollution and install more energy-efficient traffic lights,
New England is at odds with the federal government's policies on carbon
dioxide, the main culprit in global warming.
Environmental groups and 12 states, including Massachusetts, sued the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in October for failing to regulate
greenhouse gas emissions.
Monday, New England and Canadian scientists and policy makers will meet
at Suffolk University Law School in Boston to discuss how the region
needs to adapt to rising seas and other predicted effects of global
warming.
"We've all been astounded how complex moving ahead is," Kenneth Colburn,
executive director of the Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use
Management, a regional nonprofit association of air quality agencies,
told The Boston Globe.
However Colburn thinks the pact's goals can be reached.
"Think of it as Dwight Eisenhower planning D-Day. It's brand new. It's
never been done. There is not cooperation" from the federal government,
he said.
The New England-Eastern Canada pact signed in 2001 called for a
reduction of greenhouse gas pollution to 1990 levels by 2010, and to 10
percent below 1990 levels by 2020.
The New England Climate Coalition, a broad-based group of
environmentalists, clergy and municipal groups, issued a report last
fall that said New England is on target to meet less than one-third of
its 2010 goals.
Federal policy makers have said more study is needed, and have
questioned how much human activity contributes to global warming.
Meanwhile, Massachusetts has pledged to reduce carbon dioxide from the
state's dirtiest power plants by approximately 10 percent by about 2008,
the Globe said, and the Bay State now requires 1 percent of all
electricity to come from renewable means, such as solar or wind, and is
increasing that amount each year.
Also, Maine put the 2010 goal into law last year, and last week, Gov.
John G. Rowland of Connecticut adopted measures to reduce greenhouse
gases.
