Something To Think About

Another Antibiotic
Found to be Killing People
The antibiotic Tequin,
manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb, can cause potentially fatal swings
in blood sugar.
Greater Risk Than Previously Thought
A new study shows that the drug's risks are far greater than
they were believed to be. The FDA has already warned doctors not to
prescribe the antibiotic to diabetic patients. However, the blood sugar
swings have now been observed even in patients without diabetes.
17 Times the Risk
An examination of the medical records of almost 1.5 million
people older than 65 showed that those who took Tequin had four times
the risk of low blood sugar, and almost 17 times the risk of high blood
sugar.
Those who took Tequin were also far more likely to be hospitalized for
blood sugar problems, and a number of such patients died.
Alternatives Available
Tequin made $150 million in worldwide sales last year. It is
used to treat lung, sinus and urinary tract infections, and also some
sexually transmitted diseases. Alternative antibiotics are available for
all of its uses.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================
Vaccines may
create nutritional failure by inflicting early and severe injury to gut
tissue and digestive function, by increasing the risk for bilirubin
neurotoxicity at birth, by setting off inflammatory responses that
consume nutrient stores or secondarily via brain injuries impair feeding
skill and gut motility. If over-vaccination is triggering food allergies
in children, this too creates nutritional risk: Children with food
allergies have significantly lower height for age and have poor intakes
of essential nutrients compared to kids without food allergy. This means
they don't grow as well and may not learn as well as peers.

TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
French Fry Fiasco
All kids love French
fries, right? So do most adults. But there is a sinister side to
this quintessentially American food (Freedom fries, anyone?). A
study recently published in the International Journal of Cancer has
found that only one weekly serving of fries during early childhood
(ages three to five) may raise a female child's risk of developing
breast cancer in adulthood by 27 percent.
The researchers who conducted the study surveyed about 2,000
mothers, asking them to recall what their adult children ate when
they were small. Consumption of eggs, hamburgers, even cookies and
butter weren't connected with increased cancer risk in adulthood,
but those fries had some dramatic impact.
Why? Not because potatoes are inherently bad, as some Zone and
Atkins fans would have us believe. It's most likely because of the
way those potatoes are culinarily abused to make those crispy,
crunchy, greasy fries: deep-frying in trans-fat-rich oils. Those
fats appear to have effects on the developing breast tissue of young
girls that then increase their breast cancer risk later in life.
Another recent study found that heating corn, soybean, and other
polyunsaturated oils for a half hour or longer produces a toxic
compound called HNE (4-hydroxy-trans-2-nonenal). It is believed that
HNE increases risk of many illnesses, including stroke, heart
disease, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's. Oil used for deep-frying in
restaurants is usually heated for long periods and used over and
over again-both of which, according to these researchers at the
University of Minnesota, are no-nos if you wish to avoid creating
HNE in your food.
If you can't live without fries, try making oven-baked versions at
home. Cut three large russet potatoes into wedges or thin strips.
Toss with two to three tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil,
½
teaspoon each of onion powder, garlic powder, rosemary, paprika, and
salt, and ¼
tsp black pepper. Or, instead of rosemary, use
½
tsp of chili powder or cayenne if you like some spice. Transfer the
potatoes to a parchment-paper-lined cookie sheet, arranging them in
a single layer, and bake at 450 for 10 minutes. Remove, stir, and
return to the oven for another 10 minutes. Repeat until lightly
browned and crispy. Serves four to six.
This isn't exactly health food, but it's a far better alternative
than conventional fries. Bon appe´it!

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Is it caulis Or
is it borecole?
Strange names to
say the least... In some parts of
the world green foods are ready to come into season popping their green
little heads out of the ground waiting to be picked and enjoyed. Those
greens are great health foods as well as tasty… Today I'm going to cover
only two of those healthy nutritious greens!
Some people use
these greens interchangeably and accept them as the same green. Kale and
collards are similar in many respects, differing in little more than the
forms of their leaves. They are, in effect, primitive cabbages that have
been retained through thousands of years. The Greeks grew kale and
collards, although they made no such distinction between them as we make
today. Well before the Christian era the Romans grew several kinds,
including those with large leaves and stalks and a mild flavor; a
crisp-leaved form; some with small stalks and small, sharp-tasting
leaves; a broad-leaved form like collards; and others with curled leaves
and a fine flavor. "Coles" were described also in the 1st, 3rd,
4th, and 13th centuries by European writers.
Kale and
collards have remained minor commercial crops in the United States,
although collards are the standard winter greens in home gardens of the
South. Neither crop thrives in hot weather as it gives the plants a
strong, unattractive flavor. Cool growing weather, fall frosts, and mild
winters, however, impart a high sugar content and fine flavor.
Kale and Collards are conquering
heros of green foods.
"Kale"
is often used to decorate produce cases at the grocery store, but
would better serve you as a steamed up batch of health building food for
you and your family. Known for its detoxing properties, which is good
for cleaning the body of its winter comfort food goop and preparing it
to take on the summer BBQ's and beach parties! Kale is often called "borecole,"
and in America collards are sometimes called "sprouts." "Kale"
is a Scottish word derived from coles or caulis, terms
used by the Greeks and Romans in referring to the whole cabbage like
group of plants. The German word Kohl has the same origin.
"Collards" is a corruption
of coleworts or colewyrts, Anglo-Saxon terms literally
meaning "cabbage plants." With much the same nutrients as Kale.
These leafy
nonheading cabbages bear the Latin name Brassica oleracea variety
acephala, the last term meaning "without a head." They
have many names in many languages, as a result of their great antiquity
and widespread use. Apparently none of the several principal forms of
kale and collards that we know today are new. All have been known for at
least two thousand years.
All varieties of
collards appear rather similar, but the kales show interesting
diversity: tall and short; highly curled and plain leaved; blue-green,
yellow-green, and red; erect and flat-growing; in various combinations
and gradations of these characters.
Both are full
of nutrition;
Vitamin C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin,Pantothenic acid, Vitamin
B-6, Folate, Folic acid, Folate, Vitamin B-12. Vitamin A, Retinol,
Vitamin A and Vitamin E along with minerals such as Calcium, Iron,
Magnesium, Phosphorus,Potassium,Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, and
Selenium. Along with important Amino Acids such as; Tryptophan,
Threonine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Cystine,
Phenylalanine , Tyrosine, Valine, Arginine, Histidine, Alanine,
Aspartic acid, Glutamic acid, Glycine, Proline and Serine.
Kale and Collards is one of the best vegetables you can eat as
preventative medicine. Touted to help prevent several types of cancer,
in particular lung cancer. Each contains more carotenoids (anticancer
agents) than just about any other green vegetable.
Leafy greens are officially "in
season" in the winter months, but tend to be available year-round.
Choose leaves that are crisp and fresh and have a deep green color, with
no yellow tinge. Smaller leaves have a milder flavor, can be cooked
whole, and often have stems tender enough to eat. With larger leaves,
you'll need to cut out and discard the stems, and then chop the leaves
into small pieces.
You don't like
one or the other? Well, that is easily changed and flavorful tasty mix!
Also some of the carotenoids are destroyed during heat, but when cooking
both at the same time makes for more carotene available for your body to
use. Collards can be eaten raw but I believe has a better flavor when
steamed… Collard greens have a much softer, sweeter taste than kale.
When you combine the two greens in the same dish, the mild collard
flavor mitigates the sharpness of the kale.
An extra half cup a day will give you cancer-blocking benefits. And
smokers, you need to load up on them as it will boost your resistance to
developing smoking-related cancers. These are also used as part of
cleaning those winter blahs from the body!
Store kale and collard greens
in dry plastic bags in the refrigerator for up to three days. You can
also cook the greens, and store them in the freezer in sealed plastic
bags. They'll keep for months, so you can use them spontaneously in
soups or casseroles when you don't have time to get to the store.
I grew up with the term "mess o'
greens" (that's southern speech) when we were having them. Greens of
all kinds have been staples in the Southern U.S. Diet for as long as the
south has existed, which is where my family resides. In just about every
garden there will be an area of all types of greens but kale and
collards seem to be the most prolifically grown… I also grew up going
out and hunting wild greens for eating…
Here is a
suggested Kale recipe;
My favorite way of eating Kale or Collards and sometimes both mixed is
Sautéed in Olive Oil
Wash well and dry one bunch of kale (or ½ bunch of kale and ½
bunch collards) and chop into bite size pieces. Chop a couple of
green onions. Finely chop 2 cloves of garlic. Put one tablespoon of
extra virgin olive oil into a sauté pan heated on medium low. Throw in
kale, onion and garlic and sauté until wilted. I sometimes will add 2
Tablespoons of water and a dash, to taste of hot sauce; cover and simmer
until tender. Either way is excellent.
Season with sea
salt and squeeze on a little fresh lemon juice, red wine vinegar or
seasoned rice vinegar along with those little green pickled peppers.
Serve with fresh sliced tomatoes, sliced sweet onions and hot corn
bread!
According to folklore,
collards served with black-eyed peas and hog
jowl on New Year's Day promises a year of good luck and financial
reward, hanging a fresh leaf over your door will ward off evil spirits,
and a fresh leaf placed on the forehead promises to cure a headache.
Enjoy your green food and expect health!

How
Can You Be Obese and Malnourished?
© By Lena Sanchez
"If you are obese you are malnourished."
2004, Dr. Phil McGraw
"In the future we will be a nation of fat bellies.
1936 United States Congress
The last statement was made in 1936 by the United States
Congress in Document # 264 released to the public, when men of
character still existed and wasn't in the pockets
of the rich companies and money wasn't the most important thing
in life! After a thorough study of nutrients in our ground
scientists came to the conclusion that; "our soils which are
seriously deficient in trace minerals, cannot produce plant life
competent to maintain our needs, and with the continuous
cropping and chipping away of those trace minerals and
concentrates, the condition becomes worse." Followed by the
statement, "In the future we will be a nation of fat bellies.
I would say those men of far sight was right on, yet the facts
they found are not being taught in our schools and that includes
our medical schools enabling our doctors to actually make a
difference in health. Well, here we are sixty-eight years later
fulfilling that prophecy!
In the 1950's fertilizer became the way of replenishing the
depleted soil, or so the farmers thought. Sadly fertilizer only
contains 3 or 4 minerals while still lacking 80 to 81. People
believe if a fruit or vegetable looks beautiful it contains
healthy nutrients. That's what those who sell them want you to
think. Fruits and vegetables do contain a minute amount, but to
eat sufficient amounts in order to glean enough to make a
difference in your body would surely put on a few hundred pounds
in no time!
According to the latest figures the world consists of 64 percent
obese people and growing daily. Sadly those same people are
unaware their obesity means suffering with
severe malnutrition. Eating a lot of food does not guarantee
nutritional nourishment, only calories and fat.
Combine the 1936 facts with the way our foods are processed -
under the guise of keeping us healthy removing what little
nutrients are left putting your risk for becoming ill, sooner or
later, at 100%! Before all the pasteurizing, homogenizing,
genetic modifying and radiating foods most people's immune
system was healthy enough to ward off those bacteria. No longer
the case… Only after illnesses became so prevalent and the 1936
scientific world ignored report did all the processing become a
way of life. Fast/processed food has become a way of life
depleting our foods even further making for scores of cancer,
disease and illnesses becoming greater each year.
Over my 68 years of life I have learned some health prevention
and the most important one is; if I eat processed foods at meal
time or sweets between meals my body says feed me within the
hour after eating rather than the five or six hours!
Those
empty carbohydrates lead to a sugar rush, which is soon followed
by a plunge in energy that leaves you tired, irritable, hungry
and craving something sweet. Watch your food intake and see if
that doesn't happen to you! I have also learned that when I keep
my minerals balanced I don't experience hunger as often nor do I
crave the carbohydrates of old
The 1936 document stated, "No man of today can eat enough fruits
and vegetables to supply his system with the mineral salts he
requires for perfect health..."
That was the beginning of the understanding of how important
minerals were to our health, but the ball was dropped and has
not been passed along to the generations
following We are taught that daily vitamins are necessary, but
are they doing us any good? No!
Established in 1936; "Minerals are vital to human metabolism and
health but no plant or animal can manufacture minerals within
the body unless they are present in their foods. Vitamins can
only be utilized in the body when the proper mineral content is
present!!!" You will notice that most foods today contain a few
minerals but nothing near the 84 minerals and trace minerals
that our blood plasma requires to bathe our cells in and
maintain health!
Avoid obesity, check out your intake of minerals and see if you
are getting sufficient amounts.
Each one
of the following illness or disease has been proven to be
indicative of at least three or more mineral deficiencies!
Acne, Anemia, Arthritis, Asthma, Brittle nails, Birth defects,
Cancer, Candida (yeast infection), Heart disease, Chronic
Fatigue and/or Fibromyalgia, Constipation, Cramps/ muscle
spasms, Depression, Diabetes, Digestive problems, Goiter (low
thyroid), Hair loss, Premature Graying hair, Hyperactivity,
Immune system weakness, Impotence, Infertility, Liver
dysfunction, Low blood sugar, Memory loss, Muscular weakness,
Nervousness, Osteoporosis, PMS, Receding gums, Sexual
dysfunction, and Wrinkles/sagging (early aging).
I implore you to get proper mineralization into your body today
to avoid obesity and bad health. If your supplement has less
than 84 minerals and trace minerals you are not getting
sufficient supplements!
Wishing you health!

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~~^~^~^
Judges Overturn Bush Bid to Ease
Pollution Rules
By
MICHAEL JANOFSKY
March 18, 2006
WASHINGTON, March 17 - A federal appeals court on Friday overturned a
clean-air regulation issued by the Bush administration that would have
let many power plants, refineries and factories avoid installing costly
new pollution controls to help offset any increased emissions caused by
repairs and replacements of equipment.
Ruling in favor of a coalition of states and environmental advocacy
groups, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia
Circuit said the "plain language" of the law required a stricter
approach. The court has primary jurisdiction in challenges to federal
regulations.
The ruling by a three-judge panel was the court's second decision in
less than a year in a pair of closely related cases involving the
administration's interpretations of a complex section of the Clean Air
Act. Unlike its ruling last summer, when the court largely upheld the
E.P.A.'s approach against challenges from industry, state
governments and environmental groups, the new ruling was a defeat for
the agency and for industry, and a victory for the states and their
environmentalist allies.
In the earlier case, a panel including two of the three judges who ruled
on Friday decided that the agency had acted reasonably in 2002, when it
issued a rule changing how pollution would be measured, effectively
loosening the strictures on companies making changes to their equipment
and operations.
But on Friday, the court said the agency went too far in 2003 when it
issued a separate new rule that opponents said would exempt most
equipment changes from environmental reviews - even changes that would
result in higher emissions.
With a wry footnote to Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass," the
court said that "only in a Humpty-Dumpty world" could the law be read
otherwise.
"We decline such a world view," said their unanimous decision, written
by Judge Judith W. Rogers, an appointee of President
Bill Clinton. Judges David Tatel, another Clinton appointee, and
Janice Rogers Brown, a recent Bush appointee, joined her.
The winners this time ?more than a dozen states, including New York and
California and a large group of environmental organizations ? hailed the
decision as one of their most important gains in years of litigation,
regulation and legal challenges under the Clean Air Act.
The provision of the law at issue, the "new source review" section,
governs the permits required at more than 1,300 coal-fueled power plants
around the country and 17,000 factories, refineries and chemical plants
that spew millions of tons of pollution into the air each year.
"This is an enormous victory over the concerted efforts by the Bush
administration to dismantle the Clean Air Act,"
Eliot Spitzer, the New York attorney general, whose office led the
opposition from the states, said in an interview.
Mr. Spitzer, who is running for governor, said the ruling "shows that
the administration's effort to misinterpret and undermine the statute is
illegal."
Howard Fox, a lawyer for Earth Justice, which represented six
environmental and health groups in the case, called the ruling "a
victory for public health," adding, "It makes no sense to allow huge
multimillion-dollar projects that drastically increase air pollution
without installing up-to-date pollution controls."
The E.P.A. issued only a brief statement, saying: "We are disappointed
that the court did not find in favor of the United States. We are
reviewing and analyzing the opinion."
The decision is unlikely to be the last word; several circuit courts or
appeals courts have considered or decided related cases, and the issue
may eventually reach the Supreme Court. Some in Congress say the
uncertainty demands an overhaul of the Clean Air Act itself, but there
has been no real movement in that direction in recent years.
The new ruling addressed the administration's effort in 2003 to offer
relief to energy companies that faced costly settlements of litigation
brought by President Clinton's E.P.A. The agency proposed exemptions for
companies whenever upgrades to their equipment amounted to less than 20
percent of the replacement cost of the equipment. In effect, that made
perennial repairs of old equipment a more attractive alternative in many
cases than its outright replacement.
Energy companies said the two rules the administration proposed in 2002
and 2003 would help them expand energy supplies at lower cost to
consumers. But environmentalists said the change would result in just
the kind of increased pollution that the law was intended to control.
The Clean Air Act calls for companies to build plants with up-to-date
control technologies, and the new source provision was a way to ensure
that as time goes by, pollution controls must be modernized along with
the plants themselves.
Industry groups, which had challenged the first E.P.A. rule last year as
not being flexible enough, were aligned with the agency this time. In
general, they have been close partners with the Bush administration in
environmental matters, pushing for greater economic considerations in
the creation of any new policy.
The 20 percent threshold in the overturned rule would have enabled plant
operators to make many repairs and upgrades without spending additional
tens of millions of dollars for more advanced pollution controls. In
settlements under the old rules, some companies faced costs of more than
$100 million.
"This is a terrible decision," said Scott Segal, director of the
Electric Reliability Coordinating Council, a trade organization, arguing
that the "any physical change" definition created financial instability
for plant operators who spent as much as $800 million for a new boiler.
He and other industry leaders expressed hope that the court ruling might
induce Congress to pass new legislation that would include New Source
Review, a step that he said would make it easier for plant operators to
plan for their future upgrades and investments.
John Engler, president of the National Association of Manufacturers,
called the ruling "a significant setback to business efficiency" and
environmental quality.
The government has 45 days to decide whether to seek a review of the
ruling by the entire appeals court.
