Yellowstone Bison Test for Brucellosis

GARDINER, Mont. (AP) - Thirty bison captured this week near the northern
boundary of Yellowstone National Park have tested positive for
brucellosis and are being sent to slaughter, the park said Tuesday.(Read
on and see how smart this is!)
The bison were among 50 tested Tuesday. Twenty bison tested negative and
were added to the number being held at the Stephens Creek facility for
release in the park this spring, the park said. Fourteen animals were
vaccinated.
Room at the Stephens Creek holding facility is running out, the park
said. Currently, 174 bison that have tested negative are being held at
the site for release this spring, and the park said only about 26 more
could be held there.
Once holding capacity is reached, the park said, "all remaining bison
will be shipped to slaughter without testing."
The bison tested Tuesday were among about 150 animals captured Sunday
and Monday, the park said.
Brucellosis is an infection transmitted from animals to humans by
ingestion of infected food products or direct contact with an infected
animal. The bacteria that causes this disease are found in unpasteurized
milk from diseased cows and also from the miscarried offspring of farm
animals.
The capture and testing of bison from Yellowstone occurs under a joint
state and federal management plan. An aim of the plan is to reduce the
risk of transmission of brucellosis from bison to cattle in Montana.
This year, about 457 bison have been captured at the Stephens Creek
site, the park said. So far, 182 bison have been sent to slaughter,
including seven bull bison that were not tested first, the park said. (Why
are these animals being slaughtered for food? What is wrong with the
world anymore? I am at a total loss as to how people can be so
nonchalant about others health, it could be one of their family that
unknowingly contracts the disease!)

U.S. Moves Closer to Poultry Drug Ban
WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. government moved closer to banning an
antibiotic given to poultry, as an administrative law judge Tuesday
upheld the Food and Drug Administration's conclusion that Baytril's use
in chicken causes people to get sick from drug-resistant bacteria.
At issue are a family of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, which
include the popular drug Cipro. Some fluoroquinolones are used in
animals, but others are a leading treatment for thousands of Americans
who get food poisoning from campylobacter, bacteria found mostly in
chicken.
Cases of antibiotic-resistant campylobacter are rising, federal health
statistics show - and an FDA investigation concluded that use of
fluoroquinolones in chicken is one significant cause.
So in 2000, the FDA proposed banning the two fluoroquinolones used in
poultry. Abbott Laboratories agreed to pull its version, Sara Flox, off
the market immediately.
But Bayer Corp. fought the decision, and its Baytril has continued to
sell during the company's appeal.
Tuesday, FDA Administrative Law Judge Daniel J. Davidson ruled against
Bayer, citing "serious questions about the safety of Baytril use in
poultry" in deciding the FDA's ban should take place.
Bayer has 60 days to make a final appeal directly to the FDA's
commissioner - and plans to, a spokesman said late Tuesday. The company
will argue that Baytril is the most effective treatment to prevent the
spread of a troubling respiratory disease in poultry processing plants.
If the commissioner does not intervene, the ban could take effect by
late May.
A coalition of consumer advocacy and environmental groups, called Keep
Antibiotics Working, called on Bayer to quit the fight, arguing that
major poultry producers and purchasers, including McDonalds, already
insist on a flouroquinolone-free chicken supply.

FDA Looks at Anemia Drugs, Cancer Risks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. regulators are considering whether two
anemia-fighting drugs, often given to cancer patients, may in some cases
stimulate tumor growth, a question raised by studies of similar products
sold in Europe.
The treatments are bioengineered versions of a human protein,
erythropoietin, that stimulates production of red blood cells. Combined
sales of the anemia drugs, which are given by injection, amount to
several billion dollars a year.

Since spring is a time to clean your home and your body, this week's
vegetable is one that anyone can have from the poorest to the richest
pocketbook. No money needed to put it on your table.
Huge nutrients - The Dandelion - The dandelion grows wild in almost
every yard I've ever been in making it a free food! There are many
varieties of Dandelion leaves; some are deeply cut into segments, in
others the segments or lobes form a much less conspicuous feature.
The dandelion leaves are shiny and without hairs, the margin of each
leaf cut into great jagged teeth, either upright or pointing somewhat
backwards, and these teeth are themselves cut here and there into lesser
teeth. It is this somewhat fanciful resemblance to the canine teeth said
to resemble the angular jaw of a lion fully supplied with teeth.
The shining, purplish flower-stalks rise straight from the root, are
leafless, smooth and hollow and bear single heads of flowers. On picking
the flowers, a bitter, milky juice exudes from the broken edges of the
stem, which is present throughout the plant, and which when it comes
into contact with the hand, turns to a brown stain that is rather
difficult to remove.
The dandelion is a veritable feast for at least ninety-three different
kinds of insects who are in the habit of feasting on it.
It is a great salad green loaded with antioxidants, and potassium. Is
a great milk producer in cows - most cows will not eat it but when they
do it increases the milk production by about 1/3 - and in lactating
women. The leaves are more nutritious than anything you can buy with
more beta-carotene than carrots. More iron and phenomenal calcium than
spinach. High in vitamins B-1, B-2, B-5, B-6, B-12, C, E, P, and D,
biotin, inositol, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc. A tasty,
free vegetable that grows on virtually every lawn.
The young leaves of the Dandelion make an agreeable and wholesome
addition to spring salads. The full-grown leaves should not be taken,
being too bitter, but the young leaves, especially if blanched or saut?d,
make an excellent salad, either alone or in combination with other
greens, onion, lemon juice, shallot tops and/or chives. Dandelion is
only pleasantly bitter, and if eaten while the leaves are quite young,
the center rib of the leaf is not at all unpleasant to the taste. When
older the rib is tough and not so tasty to eat.
The young leaves may also be boiled as a vegetable, spinach fashion,
thoroughly drained, sprinkled with lemon or lime juice, pepper and salt,
moistened with soup or butter and served very hot. If considered a
little too bitter, use half spinach, but the Dandelion must be partly
cooked first then add the spinach to finish cooking, as it takes longer
than spinach. Another variation, some grated nutmeg or garlic, a
teaspoonful of chopped onion or grated lemon peel can be added to the
greens when they are cooked. A simple vegetable soup may also be made
with Dandelions.
The dried Dandelion leaves are also employed as an ingredient in many
digestive or diet drinks and herb beers. Dandelion Beer is a rustic
fermented drink common in many parts of the country and made also in
Canada. Workmen in the furnaces and potteries of the industrial towns of
the Midlands have frequent resource to many of the tonic Herb Beers,
finding them cheaper and less intoxicating than ordinary beer, and
Dandelion stout ranks as a favorite with many. An unusual but agreeable
and wholesome fermented drink is made from Dandelions, Nettles and
Yellow Dock.
The roasted roots are largely used to form Dandelion Coffee, being first
thoroughly cleaned, then dried by artificial heat, and slightly roasted
till they are the tint of coffee, when they are ground ready for use.
The roots are pulled up in the autumn, which is the best time for this
purpose. The prepared powder is said to be almost indistinguishable from
real coffee, and is said to be an improvement to inferior coffee.
The dandelion is known for it's diuretic properties as well as used for
blood cleansing tonic and slightly aperient (laxative). It is a general
stimulant to the system and especially to the urinary organs, and is
chiefly used medicinally in kidney and liver disorders.
Dandelions are also good tonic for the bladder, spleen, pancreas,
stomach and intestines. It?s recommended for stressed-out, internally
sluggish, and sedentary people. Anyone who's a victim of excessive fat,
white flour, and concentrated sweeteners could benefit from a daily cup
of dandelion tea.
Have gallstones try this;
1 OZ. Dandelion root, 1 OZ. Parsley root, 1 OZ. Balm herb, 1/2 OZ.
Ginger root, 1/2 OZ. Liquorice root. Place in 2 quarts of water and
gently simmer down to 1 quart, strain and take a wineglassful every two
hours.
A Healthier jelly for the morning toast/English muffin/bagel! (Jelly
isn't healthy but this is a close as you are going to get)
Dandelion Flower Jelly
Ingredients:
4 cups yellow parts of dandelion blossoms
3 cups boiling water
4 1/2 cups sugar (I prefer the equivalent in Stevia)
2 Tbsp Freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 pkg powdered pectin
Pull the yellow blossoms apart from the green parts. Get lots and lots
of blossoms.. While you are collecting them, you can freeze what you
already have. Make sure there are no green parts since the green parts
have a bitter flavor. I pack the blossoms into a 4 cup measure. More
blossoms mean more flavor for the jelly. Bring the water to a boil and
fill the water with dandelion blossom shreds. Simmer over very gentle
heat about 10 minutes. Pour the water and blossoms through a strainer.
Press the blossoms as dry as possible to extract the maximum amount of
water. Add more blossoms to the strained water and simmer for about 10
minutes. Continue simmering and straining until all the blossoms are
used up. Add more water to make up 3 cups. You lose some water because
it is caught in the blossoms. Strain the water very well. I use a coffee
filter. Combine water with lemon juice, sugar and pectin. Bring to
roiling boil and stir until sugar is dissolved. Boil hard for one
minute. Skim. Pour into hot jars and seal. I haven't used food coloring
but I have seen this jelly lightly tinted and it looks prettier.
Enjoy your free food while cleansing your system and adding valuable
nutrients!

Most parents are concerned about keeping their homes
germ and virus free. The most common way to do this
is with a disinfectant. But did you know that most
disinfectants are considered pesticides? While they do
provide temporary effectiveness against germs, they are
very hazardous especially in aerosol form because the
vapors can be inhaled and seep into skin. You many not
think this is bad but consider this; medicines today can be
given through a patch or nasal spray because those areas
of our body are porous. When cleaning products are
inhaled or get on skin they enter the body's system.
What kinds of chemicals in disinfectants are we talking
about?
Ammonia fumes can irritate eyes and lungs. It can cause
burns or rashes on skin. If mixed with products containing
chlorine, it can produce deadly chloramine gas.
Detergents are toxic and poisonous to ingest, causing nausea
and in extreme cases - coma
Cresol is corrosive to tissue leading to damage to the liver,
kidneys, lungs, pancreas and spleen
Lye is a caustic product that burns skin and can cause
blindness.
Phenol is a neurotoxin meaning it can cause central
nervous system depression. It can severely affect circulatory
system as well. It is corrosive to skin. Finally, its a
suspected carcinogen (causing cancer).
Pine Oil irritates eyes and mucous membranes.
No wonder many environmental health organizations such
as the EPA and the Consumer Products Safety Commission
attribute household products to the rise of a variety of
ailments such as asthma, allergies and even cancer. Its
important to note that these ailments are not attributed
to the improper use or accidental poisoning. They are
thought the be result of just using the product without
gloves or masks, and the lack of ventilation in homes
(homes are more energy efficient now which is good for
lower power bills but bad for trapping the out gassing
of household products thus causing indoor air pollution).
What's even more concerning is that manufacturer's are
not required to list every single ingredient in their
products that are used in homes. The results can be
tragic because without proper labeling, the Poison Control
Centers cannot help provide intervention when accidental
poisoning occurs.
The best way to kill germs in a manner that is safe for you
and your family is to opt for non-toxic cleaners that don't
have phenol, lye and other dangerous chemicals that are
known to cause cancer, neurological problems or other
irritations. These can be found in health related stores and
through online or mail order outlets.

If You Think Mercury Poisoning Is Bad
Now, Wait A While!
New regulations dumbed down the requirements of industry and it will
dumb down our world as it poisons the population!
What happened to the EPA leaders? Who bought them? Obviously already
breathed or eaten too much pollution!
Money is behind the worst disaster in our environment and is going to
create a world of mentally challenged and physically ill people!
Under court order, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has
proposed a set of rules to regulate mercury emissions from the 1,100 to
1,200 U.S. coal-fired power plants, but the proposed rules are even less
strict than the federal Clean Air Act.
While The Clean Air Act calls for a 90 percent to 95 percent reduction
in mercury emissions by 2007, the new rules propose a target of a 29
percent reduction by 2007 and an industry-wide reduction of 70 percent
by 2018. Further, the proposed rules do not regulate the emissions as a
hazardous air pollutant, despite the known toxic effects of mercury
emissions, and experts agree the rules do not protect the people, fish
or environment.
In addition to mercury, which can cause numerous health problems in
humans, including damage to the central nervous system and neurological
and developmental problems, coal-fired plants emit four additional
pollutants: sulfur dioxide, the leading cause of acid rain; nitrogen
oxides, which contribute to smog-forming ground-level ozone; carbon
dioxide, a greenhouse gas implicated in global warming; and
lung-damaging soot particles, known as "fly ash."
Perhaps the worst part of the proposed rules is that technology exists
to reduce mercury emissions by 90 percent. But under the proposed
regulations, coal-fired power plants will not be required to use the
technology. Further, the rules actually ?allow the biggest polluters to
essentially buy pollution credits from companies that emit less mercury
than allowed in a system called ?cap and trade?."
Many say that the environmental regulations are being heavily influenced
by the electrical power industry, which argues that it will be
impossible to meet the 90 percent mercury deadline by 2007.
URGENT REQUEST!
There is a way that we can make a difference and stop this corrupt
process. It is up to the public to voice their opinion about the lack of
environmental and human concern in the new mercury emissions
regulations. The EPA will accept public comment on the mercury
regulations until March 30th. Comments can be sent to A-and-R-Docket@epa.gov
subject line to read "Stop Mercury Emissions from Coal-Fired Power
Plants!" - I urge you to write in and tell the EPA that these proposed
regulations are irresponsible and unacceptable and if they choose these
irresponsible rules that those companies polluting should be required to
pay the billions of dollars in new medical bills that will occur with
this new rule!

[Dear EPA leaders,
What is happening to our leaders when you no longer are looking out for
the healthy interest of the people? We depend on you to make smart
decisions but these last two years your careless attitude toward the
environment has turned our world into a pollution poison pit and the new
regulations for coal-fired plants is the icing on the cake that will
assure a world of mentally and physically ill people! It also assures a
more severe loss of the ozone layer, making for a sick world that is
going to cost the government billions of dollars in health care.
The poorest people - reside in the coal plant country - live on fish and
vegetation off the land but the allowance of greater emissions will
assure them the inability to make smart decisions, as mercury in the
system has proven to create mental deficiencies, thereby assuring that
they cannot climb out of the poor situation they live in. Don't make it
impossible to overcome their situation due to mercury poisoning! GIVE
THEM A CHANCE TO OVERCOME POOR with cleaner air and water! They will die
sooner than most but not before hitting our medical system with billions
of dollars in medical bills... Who pays the medical care for those poor
mentally challenged and physically ill poor people? We who are able to
pay our fair share into the government!
No company, regardless of who they are, should be out from under an
umbrella allowing them to emit even 20% emissions much less the 90% and
above but that will happen if you pass this new rule... Technology
exists that can create a healthier world, so require it be used and do
not allow industry to bypass it... Stay with the now existing Federal
Clean Act Rules for a smarter healthier world. If they choose to pollute
REQUIRE those who do the polluting pay the medical costs and see what
happens with their emissions then. Are they willing to pay billions into
a health fund for those who need it and still pollute? I think not! Or
if they choose to pollute and still pay health care costs then those
companies have really stupid leaders!
Don't follow through with the new emissions ruling! Make the world a
better place and show us you can watch out for our best interest and
that you are truly there to make a difference in our lives in a good
way! We need stricter pollution rules not lax ones!
