Summer heat with

is that the weather people are
as confused as the weather, so who knows what today really holds? The only
constant is that illness and disease will continue to happen
unless preventative measures are taken. As my grandmother use to say: "A
pennies worth of prevention is worth a pound of cure!" As a child I had
no idea what she meant but as I aged I learned that it only takes small
changes to give huge benefits in most things in life. Health being
the most important of that! Have you made those small changes? Two that
everyone over the age of 10 years needs to be doing for the maximum benefit -

Toddler Contracts Rare
Infection
Mar 17, 2007
CHICAGO (AP) - A 2-year-old Indiana boy and his mother contracted a rare
and life-threatening infection from his soldier father's smallpox
vaccination, according to a published report.
The boy and his mother were being treated in a specially ventilated room
at the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital, the Chicago
Tribune reported Saturday.
The family's name and home town were not released at their request.
The boy developed a virulent rash over 80 percent of his body earlier
this month after coming in contact with his father, who had recently
been vaccinated for smallpox before he was to be deployed overseas by
the Army, the paper said.
Physicians stressed that the boy was not suffering from smallpox, but
from the related vaccinia virus which is used to convey immunity to the
much deadlier disease. They said the infection was a rare condition
called eczema vaccinatum, which has not been reported since at least
1990, when the military ended a previous program of smallpox
vaccination. Smallpox was declared eradicated in 1980.
The military began smallpox vaccinations again in 2002 because of
bioterrorism fears.
Doctors said the child suffered from eczema, which is a known risk
factor for vaccinia infection. People with eczema are warned not to have
close physical contact with the recently vaccinated because the
condition allows the virus to enter the skin, they said.
The U.S. Defense Department and federal, state and local health
authorities have been in daily contact with the hospital about the case.
Health officials say there is no infection risk for the general
population because the vaccinia virus can be spread only through close
physical contact.
Nonetheless, Dr. Madelyn Kahana, the hospital's chief of pediatric
intensive care, said staff members treating the boy and his mother were
required to wear face masks and gloves, and that the two had been placed
in a special room with negative air pressure, so all air would blow
inward.
Kahana said the boy had been treated with a potent antiviral drug, as
well as with an anti-vaccinia agent supplied by the CDC and the
experimental drug ST-246, which was untried as a therapy in humans.
She said the boy appeared to be improving this week, but will probably
lose 20 percent of his outer skin layer.

DANCE YOUR HEART
TO HEALTH!
In a study of 110 heart patients, performing the waltz proved to be just
as effective at increasing the heart's capacity for exercise as
bicycling and running. Better, actually. Oxygen uptake was 12.5% greater
among waltzers than those who relied on running or biking for their
heart reconditioning. And the anaerobic threshold (the point where
muscles fatigue) was 5% higher among dancers than the bicycling or
running crowd? they also reported improvements in sleep, mood, their
zeal for hobbies, and their ability to have sex, too.

TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Concentrated Baby Food Means High
levels of Pesticides!
Baby food is generally made from condensed vegetables and
fruits. This indicates that the pesticide residue, sometimes, can also be
concentrated. So you may get higher levels of pesticides than regular food.
Studies have revealed that children who take organic food have low pesticides
levels in their blood than children living on regular food. Pesticides can be
far more dangerous for children than for grown-ups. As babies' bodies are still
developing, they are susceptible to toxins in food, such as pesticides and other
chemicals. So for tots, organic baby food is worth the extra bucks spent.

CDC: Too
Few Eating Fruits, Vegetables
Mar 15, 2007
By DANIEL YEE
ATLANTA (AP) - Fewer than a third of American adults eat the
amount of fruits and vegetables the government recommends, a
trend that's remained steady for more than a decade, health
officials said Thursday. That's "well below" the government's
goal of getting 75 percent of Americans to eat two servings of
fruits and having half of the population consume three servings
of vegetables each day by 2010, said Dr. Larry Cohen of the U.S.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The diet survey, part of a huge federal health survey of every
state, is based on responses from 305,000 adults in 2005. It
indicates the country is only about halfway toward meeting its
healthy eating goal three years from now.
"We're really concerned with the lack of success in meeting
these national goals," said Cohen, who works in CDC's nutrition
and physical activity division.
Although the rate of fruit and vegetable consumption has
remained unchanged since 1994, health officials said the goal is
still within reach.
"We have more work to do over the next few years," said
spokeswoman Rachel Ciccarone.
Specifically the survey showed that 27 percent of adults ate
vegetables three times a day, and about 33 percent ate fruit
twice a day. A serving size is a half-cup for most fruits and
vegetables, one cup for leafy greens.
Senior citizens were more likely than others to follow Mom's
advice to eat more veggies, with slightly more than a third of
that group eating three or more servings each day. Younger
adults, age 18 to 24, ate the fewest vegetables. Nearly
four-fifths of that age category scraped the veggies to the side
of their plates - if they had vegetables on the plate at all.
Likewise, seniors also ate the most fruit, with nearly 46
percent eating two or more servings of fruit daily. People age
35 to 44 ate fruit the least, with fewer than 28 percent eating
the recommended amount of fruit each day.
The federal agency said it doesn't know why people aren't eating
more veggies or fruits. Cohen said future surveys will ask
people what other foods they are eating.
Susan Krause, a clinical dietitian at Hackensack University
Medical Center in New Jersey, said people are eating more
refined sugars or choosing protein instead of fruits and
vegetables.
"There's so much information out there and people get very
confused. When they're looking at protein, they feel that's the
solution when they're not looking at long-term health benefits,"
she said. "There's so many fabricated foods now and people are
looking at convenience."
Not only are fruits and vegetables lower-calorie, they also have
minerals and fiber that help guard against chronic diseases and
cancer, the CDC says.
The survey relied on people to report what they were eating.
Telephone questioners asked how often they consumed fruit juice,
fruit and vegetables. Although Hispanics ate the most fruits (37
percent) compared with blacks and whites, they ate the fewest
vegetables, (about 20 percent). Whites, in contrast, ate the
fewest fruits (31 percent) but the most veggies (28 percent).
Cohen said the CDC has been working on family and community
programs to get more people to eat their veggies. The agency is
working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to get more
fresh produce into schools.
Krause said health officials should offer people simple options
for getting fruits and vegetables in their diets, such as easy
recipes in cooking classes and fruit smoothies or shakes in
schools.
"If that's a way of getting it in, at least it's in the right
direction," she said. "Certainly (whole) fruit is a better
choice, but that could be the next alternative."

Counties Launch
Anti-Global Warming Plan
Mar 16, 2007
By BRIAN WESTLEY
WASHINGTON (AP) - Residents of Virginia's largest county might
soon see more vegetation growing on roofs and more green space
in new neighborhoods as part of a multimillion-dollar initiative
to combat global warming.
The changes are part of a new national program called Cool
Counties, which Fairfax County is launching along with several
partners: the Sierra Club; Washington state's King County, which
includes Seattle; and Illinois' Cook County, which includes
Chicago.
The program hopes to encourage each of the nation's more than
3,000 counties to do its part in reducing greenhouse gases,
officials said Thursday.
"Sadly, over these past six years, we've had an administration
that has chosen to deny the science of global warming," said
Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerald E. Connolly.
"If they're not going to (take the lead), we're going to do it
at the local level."
Details of the Cool Counties program have not been completed,
but they will be presented in July at the National Association
of Counties conference in Richmond, Connolly said.
The program will award counties points for various environmental
initiatives and the localities that obtain a certain number of
points will be certified Cool Counties. A rural jurisdiction
might place more emphasis on clean-burning fuels, while urban
counties would focus on environmentally friendly development.
"We want to be flexible enough so that it works for various
counties," Connolly said.
The initiative is the latest step by local leaders to embrace
some aspects of the Kyoto Protocol - an accord that calls for
mandatory reductions of greenhouse gases among the signing
nations - even as the federal government refuses to participate.
In 2005, for instance, Seattle's mayor launched the U.S. Mayors
Climate Protection Agreement, in which participants pledge to
reduce carbon dioxide emissions 7 percent below 1990 levels by
2012.
County leaders were eager build on the idea by developing a
program tailored specifically for the counties.
Counties are better positioned to promote telecommuting, the use
of hybrid cars, walkable communities and issues related to land
use, said Jim Lopez, deputy chief of staff to the county
executive in King County.
"We need to have change from the bottom up," Lopez said.
In Fairfax County, the largest county in the Washington, D.C.,
region with more than 1 million residents, Connolly said many
pieces of the initiative already are under way.
Two new fire stations, built in part with recycled materials,
make use of clean energy sources. The county government obtains
5 percent of its electricity from wind power and operates 90
hybrid vehicles. And it has purchased thousands of acres,
including the 3,200-acre former Lorton prison site, for
conservation.
Still, Connolly said more can be done.
He wants the county's fleet of 3,600 police, fire and other
vehicles to be replaced with less-polluting vehicles over time.
He also wants to double the county's use of wind power in five
years, to 10 percent. More than 400 buildings, including
schools, can be retrofitted to be made more environmentally
friendly or replaced, he said.
Glen Brand, the Sierra Club's Cool Cities director, praised the
new county-based initiative as another important step toward
reducing harmful emissions. He said that while there are upfront
investments, most environmental measures should pay for
themselves over time by reducing energy bills.
