Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health
Review," (1992).
The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen
cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

The good news is, age doesn't have to mean forgetful days,
heart attacks and brittle bones. There are certain nutrients required
as we get older, and therefore supplementing those nutrients become
extremely important to preventing these problems!
My husband and I have proven those facts with our daily supplements...
It took me a while to convince my aging husband of that fact, but when
he started to experience aging, as most people know it, he finally
listened. The remark he received from the doctor at his physical this
month was, "You are in great shape for a 68 year-old, continue what you
are doing!" He still has his muscle mass and is the oldest working
carpenter around. He still climbs up on top of those joists and walks
those tiny timbers with the agility of a twenty year old. He can lift
more than any small guy around (he's 5'3"), according to all our friends
and family. I know all that is contributed to the fact that he
supplements daily and has now for almost ten years, gets plenty of
exercise daily and eats well, most of the time.
You see he had both wrists (8"span) shattered in 1973 when a 2"x4" broke
on top of the house he was working on and he fell onto cement head first
and broke his fall with his hands, which resulted in a year and a half
off work and a few surgeries to move tendons around so fingers would
move and physical therapy but gaining only 37% of the movements in his
wrists after that. He was told that arthritis was going to be a big
problem as he aged and that he would never be a carpenter again. He
still only has 37% movement but he does pushups on his fingertips and
uses his shoulders to take the place of the wrist movement. No arthritis
in sight yet... His mental attitude was and is "I will beat this"... So
the combination of mental attitude and supplementing minerals and herbs
keeps him young.
So if you want to be a young 68 year-old one day start supplementing the
right liquid minerals and muganutrient vitamins NOW!

Something To Think About
============================
Prescriptions on the Rise
If you ever wonder why that line at your local pharmacy is always out
the door, here's a small clue.
Seems the use of polypharmacy, which means administering three or more
drugs to the same patient, has shot up dramatically, according to the
Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.
When the Biological Psychiatry Branch of the National Institute of
Mental Health in Bethesda, MD, reviewed the number of prescriptions
written for psychiatry patients, researchers found:
Between 1974 and 1979, only about 3 percent of patients had at least
three drugs prescribed.
From 1980 to 1984, the number rose to slightly more than 9 percent.
Between 1985 and 1989, almost 35 percent of discharge patients were
given three or more drugs.
And between 1990 and 1995, the number rose to almost 44 percent.
LENA'S NOTE: Are all those prescriptions necessary or has the
pharmaceutical companies found a way to market more? I suspect it's a
bit of both, but mostly that people are not taking responsibility for
their health and letting drugs lull them into a false sense of hope for
better health.

"Proof positive of fluoride's deadly decay"
Dr. W.C. Douglass states;
"You know the addition of toxic fluoride to our water
supplies is one of my major hot-button issues. I've written
about it frequently over the past two years in both the
Daily Dose and in my newsletter. But hold onto your hat,
because I'm about to expose to you some of the most damning
evidence yet that water fluoridation is completely founded
on false pretenses..."
"First, a little background: Although fluoride naturally
occurs in most water supplies in varying amounts, we
routinely add even more of this industrial toxin - which
used to be used as a rat poison, by the way - to our
municipal water supplies in the name of dental health.
(Never mind the fact that the biggest comparative study ever
conducted on fluoridation and tooth decay yielded no
statistical difference in the rate of cavities between
fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas.) What's really
disturbing, though, is that there's a large body of
virtually unreported evidence suggesting that fluoride
actually DAMAGES teeth - like this shocking story from
Montana:"
"Yellowstone Park's majestic elk are dying before their time -
and fluoride-damaged teeth are to blame! That's right: In
certain areas of America's most beautiful national park,
elk are expiring years sooner than they're supposed to
because of the unusually high levels of naturally
occurring fluoride in the water. According to an
ecology professor from Montana State University, elk in
these areas live only 65%-70% as long as elk just a short
distance north, away from the geothermally active southern
zones of the park which spout extreme amounts of fluoride."
"Why aren't these animals living to a ripe old age? Because
this fluoride causes PREMATURE DETERIORATION OF THEIR TEETH -
which leads to an inability to properly chew their forage.
This in turn leads to starvation, disease, and an increased
vulnerability to wolves and other predators due to weakness
and malnutrition."
"And guess what? Too much fluoride will do the same to your
teeth. You might not fall prey to a wolf because of it, but
the point is the same: Fluoride doesn't do teeth any favors.
So there's really no reason to add it to our water supplies,
is there? Except maybe to help big industry dispose of
millions of tons of toxic waste every year..."
"Yes, dentists and others may insist that a small amount of
fluoride actually helps your teeth, but I've never seen any
convincing evidence of this. But I HAVE learned about the
effects of fluoride toxicity on human health and longevity."
"So do yourself a favor: Shut off your city water and dig a
well or buy bottled water - or get yourself a good fluoride-
eliminating water filter."

TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Burden of proof
Be glad our court system isn't run by the same standards
that the FDA requires of the drug industry.
Here's what I mean: Unlike in court, where everyone involved
is entitled to ALL the evidence (theoretically, anyway) in
any given case - and that evidence becomes part of the
public record after a case is settled - the pharmaceuticals
industry isn't legally required to show doctors, patients,
or the public at large ANY unfavorable findings research may
reveal about their patented poisons.
Yes, you read that right: Even though a medication may
strike out time and again in clinical trials, we typically
only hear about the ones in which the drug produced a
clearly favorable result. And in no segment of the drug
market do these types of statistical shenanigans happen more
frequently (or egregiously) than in the antidepressant
realm. I've written about this before (Daily Dose,
4/4/2003), but if you haven't been with me that long, here's
what I said back then:
"Before a drug can be approved by the FDA, its maker is
required to submit two trials that show clearly positive
effects... the manufacturers of Prozac needed five separate
trials to collect a pair with positive clinical results. And
for the makers of Paxil and Zoloft, it took EVEN MORE."
Think about this absurdity for a minute. Given a large
enough pool of double blind, placebo-controlled drug trials,
the law of averages dictates that at least a few are likely
to yield findings that support the use of the study's
medication. But even if the VAST MAJORITY of these trials
are inconclusive - or find that the placebo group is the
more effective - the only ones you (or the FDA) may ever
find out about are the few flattering ones used as the basis
for the drug's approval.
What's worse, the only studies on these drugs most doctors
are likely to see are the ones published in the medical
journal articles - some of which are ghostwritten by
professional "spin doctors" posing as real MDs (Daily Dose,
9/19/2003). And guess which studies are likely to make the
news in these venues...
You guessed it: The dramatic, drug-friendly ones.
Why is this so important that it needs to be reiterated now?
Because this kind of shameless deception on the part of the
drug manufacturers isn't just robbing people of their hope
for cures (and their money), it's actually KILLING THEM.
Leading you AWAY from the slaughter,
William Campbell Douglass II, MD

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
"An apple a day keeps the doctor away!" is really
true!
Apples are known to help keep the immune system healthy
Apples are a marvelous anti-aging food. They stabilize blood sugar,
lower blood pressure, control the appetite and keep the cardiovascular
system healthy.
Researchers have found that those who eat more apples tend to have a
lower incidence of colds and upper respiratory ailments. In 2003 it was
reported by one study group that those who ate apples could probably
avoid asthma.
There are numerous types of apples but they vary very little in the
nutrient content, so eat whichever type you prefer and expect basically
the same results!
* Apples have no fat, cholesterol or sodium, and a medium-size apple
contains only 80 calories.
* A medium-size apple provides five grams of dietary fiber - 20 percent
of the recommended daily intake. This is more than oatmeal or most
breakfast cereal, which can lower cholesterol as well as keep your
intestines healthy and moving as they should!
* Apple sauce, apple juice and apple cider are a tasty way to get your
minimum five servings of fruits and vegetables per day for optimum
health. Six ounces of apple juice or apple cider or one-half cup (4
ounces) of apple sauce count as one daily fruit serving.
* Apples contain pectin, a water-soluble fiber found to reduce levels of
cholesterol by removing it from the blood stream.
* Apples are a good source of potassium, which may help to maintain
healthy blood pressure.
* Apples contain complex carbohydrates that give you energy faster than
eating something high in sugar.
* Apples contain boron, an essential trace element that helps to harden
bones, which may reduce the onset of osteoporosis.
* Apples have been shown to be better than coffee or caffeine to give
you that morning boost of energy!
Be sure to eat the skin (wash it first) because it contains pectin
fiber, a soluble type of fiber, which is a well known anti-cholesterol
agent.
Around our house we prefer apples raw or cooked whole as desert.
Core the apple and trim the bottom of the apple.
Place it in an oven safe dish.
Fill the apple core hole with butter and brown sugar, cover dish with
foil and bake in a preheated 350F degree oven for about 40 minutes. If
you have more than two apples extend baking time by 5 minutes per apple.
Or place butter and brown sugar filled apples in a microwave safe dish
and microwave as you would a baked potato.
Eating an apple a day will keep the doctor away as well as keep you
younger in many ways.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Children are sleeping less than experts recommend and
many parents are not happy about it, according to a survey of American
households by the National Sleep Foundation.
The foundation, an independent organization that supports sleep
education, announced Tuesday that its annual survey found that children,
from newborns to fifth-graders, are getting one to two hours less sleep
every 24 hours than is recommended.
The survey found that infants, age 3 to 11 months, were getting about
12.7 hours of sleep daily, while experts suggest 14 to 15 hours.
For toddlers, age 12 to 35 months, the poll found that the average child
slept 11.7 hours, while 12 to 14 hours is the recommended amount of
daily sleep.
Daily sleep averaged about 10.4 hours for preschoolers and 6-year-olds
in kindergarten, the survey found. Experts recommend 11 to 13 hours of
sleep for this age group.
Children in the first through fifth grades average about 9.5 hours of
sleep daily, the survey found. Experts say the appropriate amount of
sleep for this group is 10 to 11 hours.
"Our new poll finds that many children are not sleeping enough and many
experience sleep problems," Richard L. Gelula, the foundation chief
executive officer, said in a statement. "What is troublesome is that the
problems start in infancy."
About 69 percent of the children in the households surveyed were said to
experience sleep problems a few nights a week. Common problems included
difficulty falling asleep, sleepwalking, snoring, resisting going to bed
and breathing difficulties.
The poll found that about 75 percent of those polled would change
something about their children's sleep habits if they could.
The poll also found that the parents or caregivers of children are also
getting less than the ideal amount of sleep. Among those polled, the
average for parents and caregivers was 6.8 hours per night, slightly
less than the seven hours that the foundation found in a 2002 poll of
adults. Most parents said they need eight to nine hours of sleep a
night.
Parents and caregivers in households where children got the least amount
of sleep were about twice as likely to sleep less than six hours a night
themselves, the poll found. About 30 percent of this adult group also
reported insomnia a few nights a week, and half of those polled said
their sleep problems increased after children came into the household.
The poll results are based on telephone interviews of 1,473 adults
selected randomly and who were the primary caregiver or shared equally
in the care of a child age 10 or younger. The sleep history of the
children was based on the recall of those polled. The margin of error
for the poll, generally, was plus or minus 2.6 percentage points,
although in some categories and with some responses or totals, the error
rate could go as high as 6.8 percentage points, the foundation said in a
statement.
U.N. Warns on Island Countries' Garbage
Mar 30, 1:07 PM (ET)
By HANS GREIMEL
JEJU, South Korea (AP) - Island "paradise" countries are increasingly
threatened by piles of garbage and sewage they don't have the money or
space to dispose of, the United Nations warned Tuesday at a global
environment summit.
The new trend is a health and economic hazard and linked to exploding
tourism in places like the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, the United
Nations said in a report.
Garbage now rates among rising sea levels, overfishing and water
shortages as a top danger to these small countries, and may be turning
off tourists, the United Nations said.
The findings were released as environment ministers from around the
globe gathered for the second day of a U.N. Environment Program summit
dealing with water and sanitation. The summit ends Wednesday.
"Small islands across the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and the Pacific are
some of the most vulnerable nations on Earth," UNEP executive director
Klaus Toepfer said. "Handling solid wastes from industry, households and
tourism is emerging as another issue with which they need advice and
help."
Developing small island countries are burdened by an influx of tourism,
but often lack the landfill space, expensive incinerators or treatment
plants to deal with garbage and human waste.
Since the early 1990s, the level of plastic waste on small islands has
increased fivefold, according to the UNEP study. In the Caribbean, about
90 percent of sewage is discharged untreated into surrounding seas; in
the Pacific, about 98 percent.
Worldwide, about one in 20 people who go swimming in the oceans get sick
because of such discharge, said Veerle Vandeweed, chief coordinator of
the study.
Ironically, most of the environmental damage from tourism comes during
the construction of resorts, not their operation, because of decisions
to build too close to fragile coastlines and industrial waste, Vandeweed
said. In the Caribbean alone, the number of tourists rose 19 percent to
17.1 million a year from 1993 to 1997.
The rapid development could backfire on the islands, if their allure as
a tourist destination is spoiled by environmental degradation, UNEP
warned.
The shoreline of the Pacific isle of Nauru, for example, appears
blue-green in aerial photos, not from coral reefs, but from mounds of
discarded beer cans, UNEP said.
The piled-up trash also supports vermin such as rats, which carry such
diseases as plague, scabies and other tropical sicknesses.
Economically, polluted coastal waters create oxygen-starved dead zones
devoid of fish that undermine traditional island fishing industries.
The Alliance of Small Island States, a group of 45 island nations, is
working with aid agencies, private industry and other governments to win
access to better waste disposal technology and funding, chairman Jagdish
Koonjul said.
Sanitation problems are exacerbated on the islands because of the lack
of fresh water. Rising ocean levels worldwide, triggered in part by
global warming, have meant that freshwater wells are increasingly
tainted with seawater, Koonjul said.
Globally about 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water,
while another 2.4 billion lacked access to basic sanitation, UNEP said.
Nearly 5,000 children die every day from diseases caused by a lack of
water.
The discussions in Jeju, a South Korean resort island, will form a basis
for talks next month in New York with the U.N. Commission on Sustainable
Development
That meeting will assess progress toward the United Nation's target of
halving the number of people with no access to safe drinking water or
basic sanitation by 2015.
The current forum will try to generate a Jeju Initiative that will
identify concrete measures to be taken to reach those goals, UNEP
spokesman Nick Nuttall said.
Supplying safe water is increasingly difficult because the world
population is growing so fast, by about 77 million people a year, UNEP
says.
