Chronic Wasting Disease Found in one New York Deer

WASHINGTON - The first case of chronic wasting disease outside the US
Midwest or Rocky Mountain region was confirmed in a white-tailed deer in
New York State, the state's agriculture department said on Thursday.
Chronic wasting disease, which is not believed to harm humans, is a
transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, part of a family of central
nervous system diseases that include scrapie and mad cow disease. "This
is not a public health threat, but it is a slow-moving animal health
threat," said Bruce Akey, New York's assistant state veterinarian.
The New York Agriculture Department said the animal that tested positive
for CWD was a 6-year-old white-tailed doe that was slaughtered from a
captive herd in Oneida County.
The disease, which is not believed to harm other domestic livestock, has
been found in a dozen US states in the Midwest and Rocky Mountains.
"So far, there is no known connection with any previously identified CWD
positive herds or areas in the United States," Akey told reporters.
New York officials said they quarantined the herd where the infected
deer was found, and would kill the remaining animals to test their
brains for the disease. The state also quarantined other herds
associated with the infected animal.
Symptoms of the disease, which has a long incubation period, include
weight loss, stumbling, tremors, lack of coordination and listlessness,
according to the US Agriculture Department.
Scientists do not yet know how the disease is transmitted among animals.
The disease has been found in Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota,
Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Wisconsin
and Wyoming.
The US Centers for Disease Control advises consumers to avoid eating
venison from any deer that might be infected with the disease as a
safety precaution.
However, New York State Health Commissioner Antonia Novello said there
were no cases of humans falling ill from eating suspect deer meat.
"We feel very comfortable saying there would be no public health risk to
consuming venison," she said.

"Chronic wasting disease, which is not believed to harm humans." When I
look up the word transmissible in the dictionary I found; [trans-mis-si-ble
adjective: capable of being transmitted <transmissible diseases>.] They
have the audacity to tell you "it's not believed to harm humans...
Before Mad Cow Disease was Mad Cow Disease it was called, and in some
third world countries still called "Chronic Wasting Disease." Our U. S.
leaders have this unique quality of thinking they are protecting people
by calling a diseases something different than what it's commonly named
and that makes it okay and safe and if they say "it's not believed" they
feel safe from being found to lie... In Europe they killed thousands of
cattle because they had "Chronic Wasting Disease" renamed "Mad Cow
Disease," yet we are told that this "Chronic Wasting Disease" in deer is
not passed to humans. They are looking at collateral damage because
Wasting Disease is only dangerous to those who kill and eat deer so it's
considered to be safe? What kind of reasoning is that? In 25 or 30 years
we will know that isn't at all true... To date there have been two deer
found so you know if there are two there are a whole lot more....Moral of this comment. Don't kill
and eat deer anywhere in the U.S. unless you like playing Russian
Roulette with your life...

Laughter is truly good medicine

ACCORDING TO the Bible, "a merry heart doeth good like a medicine." Now,
modern science may be validating that Old Testament proverb — a good
laugh may actually help fend off heart attacks and strokes. "We believe
laughing is good for your health," said Michael Miller, of the
University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, who led the
research. "And we think we have evidence to show why that's the case."
A growing body of other evidence has suggested that negative emotions,
particularly depression and stress, can be harmful, making people more
prone to illness, more likely to experience suffering from their
ailments and less likely to recover as quickly, or at all. One recent
study even found sudden emotional shock can trigger life-threatening
heart symptoms that many doctors mistake for a classic heart attack.
Miller himself, along with his colleagues, had done a study that found
people who have a negative reaction to social situations tend to be more
prone to heart disease.
But far less has been done to examine whether positive emotions can
reduce the risk and complications of illness.
So they decided to examine the ability of blood vessels to expand —
known as vasodilation. Poor vasodilation can increase the risk of heart
attacks and strokes by making the passageways prone to being blocked,
cutting off vital blood flow.
The researchers asked 20 healthy men and women to watch clips of two
movies — either the violent opening battle scene in the 1998 film
"Saving Private Ryan" or a humorous scene from a comedy, such as the
1996 "Kingpin."
The researchers tested the subjects' vasodilation, before and after the
movie, by constricting and releasing an artery in their arms with a
blood pressure cuff and then using ultrasound to measure how the blood
vessels were functioning.
Blood flow was significantly reduced in 14 of the 20 volunteers who saw
the stressful film. In contrast, blood flow markedly increased in 19 of
the 20 volunteers after watching the funny movie, the researchers
reported last week at a meeting of the American College of Cardiology in
Orlando, Fla.
Overall, blood flow decreased by about 35 percent after experiencing
stress but increased 22 percent after laughter — an improvement
equivalent to that produced by a 15- to 30-minute workout.
"It was a pretty dramatic difference," Miller said.
Previous research has indicated that stress hormones may be the primary
culprit by which negative emotions harm health. When a person is under
stress, the body pumps out hormones such as adrenalin and cortisol. That
is designed to prime the body for a fight or a flight, but the hormones
can have detrimental effects on the body, including suppressing the
immune system and constricting blood vessels.
Miller and his colleagues hypothesize that laughter may have a
contrasting effect, causing the body to release other natural chemicals
known as endorphins — pleasure-producing agents best known for producing
the "runner's high" — that may counteract the effects of stress hormones
and cause blood vessels to dilate.
The researchers acknowledge they are still a long way from proving their
hypothesis or fully understanding the process.
"Conceivably, when you laugh you send a signal to the brain to release
these endorphins, and these may activate receptors to release other
chemicals.
Laughter may also use similar mechanisms to boost the immune system and
reduce the amount of inflammation in the body, linked to an increased
risk of a host of health problems, said Lee Berk, a professor of health
promotion and education at Loma Linda University of California.
"Laughter is not dissimilar from exercise," Berk said. "It's not going
to cure someone from stage three cancer, but in terms of prevention it
does make sense. In a sense, we have our own apothecary on our
shoulders. Positive emotions such as laughter affect your biology."

time last year I was preparing to visit one of the large areas known for
growing Ananas comosus Merr.
Hawaii… While thinking about that marvelous trip I also remember eating
a lot of these and enjoying every morsel!
Christopher Columbus discovered this delectable food growing on the
island of Guadeloupe in 1493 and took them back to Spain. It became very
popular in Europe by the 1600s.
What
is Ananas comosus Merr?
Pineapple!
The exceptional juiciness and vibrant tropical
flavor of pineapple that balances the tastes of sweet and tart make them
only second to bananas as America’s favorite tropical fruit. Although
the season for pineapple runs from March through June, they are
available year-round in local markets.
Bromelain, the great health property contained in pineapples, has been
used for hundreds of years as a digestive aid, and to treat inflammation
and other health problems. Recently, bromelain has been investigated for
possible anticancer activity and now studies show it to contain protease
that is a great blood thinner cholesterol lowering agent, thereby
helping in preventing heart disease and stroke. Now all these will
require daily consumption of pineapple and a very large portion.
Pineapple was a
culinary favorite of the fierce Carib Indians who lived on islands in

Calcium,
a mineral, is used for building bones and teeth and in maintaining
bone strength. Calcium is also used in muscle contraction, blood
clotting, and maintenance of cell membranes.
Iron,
Necessary for production
hemoglobin, and oxygenation of red blood cells, builds up blood quality,
and increases resistance as well as increasing energy production.
Magnesium,
Key substance in proper functioning
of nerves and muscles and healthy maintenance of bones. Helps protect
the arterial lining from the stress of sudden blood pressure changes.
Phosphorus,
Essential for utilization of
carbohydrate, fats and proteins for growth, maintenance, repair of
cells, and energy production. Necessary for proper skeletal growth,
tooth development, kidney functioning and transference of nerve
impulses.
Potassium,
Essential for muscles, nerves and
heart. Aids in proper maintenance of mineral balance of blood, as well
as stable blood pressure. Works with sodium to regulate the body's water
balance.
Sodium,
The mineral is needed to maintain
proper water balance and blood pH. The mineral aids in the transmission
of nerve impulses, production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach,
muscle function and immune system maintenance.
Zinc,
important in prostate gland functions and the growth of reproductive
organs. The mineralization of bone, a healthy immune system, the
digestion of proteins, the acuity of taste and smell, detoxification of
free radical promoting metals, collagen formation and wound healing, all
depend on zinc. It assists in the transportation of vitamin A in the
blood. Sufficient intake and absorption of zinc are needed to maintain
the proper concentration of vitamin E in the blood.
Copper,
its functions involve the
development and maintenance of the cardiovascular, skeletal and the
nervous system, including the brain. The development and maintenance of
the red blood cells and healthy skin and hair also depend upon copper.
Found in all the tissues, the mineral is most concentrated in the brain,
heart, kidney, and liver.
Manganese, essential cofactor in a number of enzymes important in
energy production and antioxidant defenses.
Selenium, enhances the immune system, normal development of the
fetus during pregnancy, improving arthritic symptoms, and protecting the
skin from UV rays. A deficiency could result in birth defects, increased
risk of cancer, heart and liver diseases, Down’s syndrome and
fibrocystic breast disease.

Pineapple is best eaten
alone between meals or its enzymes will be used up digesting food and
not benefiting your body as well as it could.
Selecting, storing and using pineapple:
Look for
pineapples that are heavy for their size. While larger pineapples will
have more edible flesh, there is usually no difference in quality
between a small and large size pineapple. Pineapples should be free of
soft spots, bruises and darkened “eyes,” all of which may indicate that
the pineapple is past its prime. Choose fruit with a fragrant sweet
smell at the stem end. Avoid pineapple that smells musty, sour or
fermented.
Pineapple can be left at room temperature for one or two days before
serving. While this process will not make the fruit any sweeter, it will
help it to become softer and juicier. Since they are very perishable,
you should watch closely during storing period to ensure that they do
not spoil. After two days, if you are still not ready to consume the
pineapple, you should wrap it in a perforated plastic bag and store it
in the refrigerator where it will keep for a maximum of three to five
more days.
Pineapple that has been cut up should be stored in the refrigerator in
an airtight container. It will stay fresher and retain more taste and
juiciness if you also place some liquid, preferably juice from the
pineapple, in the container. Although pineapple can be frozen, this
process greatly affects its flavor.
Our
favorite way of eating pineapple is fresh and raw, can't beat it for
great taste and enjoyment. My husband loves pineapple pie.
Word of
caution:
If you are taking blood
thinners eat pineapple or drink pineapple juice but watch your blood
closely for too much thinning.

The Drug Company Influence on Your Health

In the beginning, there were nutrients for procuring health.
Today, there are drugs, drugs and more drugs. This is the result
of the drug company business model. It utilizes an arsenal of
techniques to influence the government in order to minimize
competition from nutritional supplements. The cold hard fact of
this business model has become clear: Health in America has been
fractured. The health of U.S. children is worse in virtually all
categories relative to
children in other industrialized countries. At least 80% of
seniors have at least one chronic disease and 50% have at least
two according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
Understanding these techniques serves as a how-to guide for
avoiding government-mandated drug addiction and remaining
healthy.
First, education on the proper use of nutritional substances to
achieve good health was removed from the medical school
curriculum over 85 years ago. There is not a medical doctor
practicing today who has been trained in medical school on the
prophylactic use of nutritional supplements. This explains the
reluctance of medical doctors to teach patients about natural
alternatives, they don't know about them. Through
self-education, a select few medical doctors have become
excellent advisors on proper use of nutraceuticals.
Second, the FDA has stonewalled ALL nutritional supplement
manufacturers from educating their clients on nutritional
supplements by passing the Dietary Supplement Health and
Education Act (DSHEA). This act prohibits supplement
manufacturers to market or claim that their products "cure,
mitigate, treat, or prevent" any given disease or illness.
Instead, they can only make general statements about their
products. As a result, nutritional supplements carry labels
that are intentionally vague and misleading to consumers.
Finding which nutritional supplements to take for any given
illness has become close to impossible.
DSHEA also gave the FDA the authority to remove any nutritional
supplement from the market if it "proved" to be unsafe. Because
of their broad definition of "unsafe" and because most anything,
even water, is unsafe in large amounts, the FDA can now ban any
nutritional supplement which poses as competition to its
pharmaceutical partners. Ephedra is a perfect example. Green tea
extract may be next.
Third, lobbying by the pharmaceutical industry has enabled the
drug community to influence the media to set a negative tone on
the use of nutritional supplementation. More often than not, the
message is that natural alternatives to prescription drugs are
ineffective and dangerous. Unable to distinguish between the
truth and profit motives, the general public has turned away
from nutritional supplements to embrace pharmaceutical drugs.
And finally, on the worldwide front, the
pharmaceutically-compliant World Trade Organization (WTO) is
working rigorously to convince the nations of the world that ALL
human beings require the EXACT same amount of nutrients and that
anything above this amount is dangerous. Under the guise of
protecting vitamin consumers, the WTO is using what is known as
the CODEX ALIMENTARIUS COMMISION (CAC) to further restrict the
free use of nutritional supplements within the United States and
worldwide.
Specifically, the CAC is setting "Guidelines for Vitamin and
Mineral Food Supplements." These guidelines are more restrictive
and will supercede current U.S. regulations by dictating to the
U.S. which nutrients are safe, the maximum and minimum amounts
allowed in a product, and related packaging and labeling
requirements.
The CAC stands firm in their conviction that these guidelines
are for the safety of others. But if safety were the priority,
then the WTO could use the CAC to protect us from prescription
drugs, which kill and estimated 100,000 people every year in the
United States. Instead, they waste time on nutritional
supplements, which have killed less people than rabid squirrel
attacks.
The success of the aforementioned techniques lies in fear. This
fear is secured by the vested interests of professional
alarmists within the government who promote it in order to
minimize drug competition. The end result - drug companies
secure their lion's share and profit from your pain.

Expert Finds Dandruff in Air Pollutants

WASHINGTON (AP) - A researcher has discovered unexpectedly large amounts
of dandruff and other flaking skin, fur, pollen and similar materials in
air pollutants known as aerosols.
Aerosols, tiny particles in the air, are widely studied because they are
an important factor in regulating climate, variously absorbing heat to
warm the air and reflecting sunlight to cool it. They are also important
in forming rain and snow.
But the amount of cellular material - bacteria, plant fragments, spores,
fungi and so forth - had been thought to be only a small proportion
compared with mineral dusts, clay and sea salt.
Now, Ruprecht Jaenicke of the Institute for Atmospheric Physics at Mainz
University in Germany has studied air samples and discovered that
biological materials can range up to 25 percent of aerosols in some
areas, and as high as 40 percent in others.
His findings are reported in Friday's issue of the journal Science.
The source of many aerosols has been unexplained and this could provide
the answer, Jaenicke said.
Jaenicke reported that the percentage of biological materials in aerosol
pollution topped 40 percent in Mainz in September and 30 percent in
October. And a study at Lake Baikal, Russia, showed more than 30 percent
in September.
He said he did similar studies of the air over ocean environments, on
mountains and in ice cores. There was no strong annual cycle, he said,
although pollen was more abundant in spring while decaying cellular
matter was more common in fall and winter.
He estimated that the amount of biological particles in the air,
worldwide, annually is 1,000 teragrams. A teragram is somewhat more than
a million tons.
By comparison, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,
established by the World Meteorological Organization and the U.N.
Environmental Program, estimated biological particles at 56 teragrams,
compared with 3,300 teragrams of sea salt and 2,000 teragrams of mineral
dust.
The new finding means researchers should take biological materials
seriously in climate modeling, in cloud physics and in hygienic
questions such as allergies, Jaenicke said.
"Don't regard that as a minor contribution," he said.
The implications for the global climate are unclear, said Murray V.
Johnston, a chemistry professor at the University of Delaware.
"The number concentrations of (biological particles) reported here are
much higher than previously thought and merit follow-up research," said
Johnston, who did not participate in Jaenicke's research.
James J. Schwab, an atmospheric chemistry research professor at the
State University of New York at Albany, isn't so sure Jaenicke's figures
are correct.
"He may very well be right. His paper does not convince me that I should
believe his estimate, however. He needs to present a more detailed and
convincing argument first," said Schwab.
If Jaenicke's estimate is right, Schwab said, "It will have small but
important effects on global climate change. It will have a bigger effect
on air pollution and air quality for regions of the country and the
globe that are out of compliance with air quality standards."
