2004-04-07 | SACRAMENTO, California: Lawsuits were filed in three
separate California courts against twelve companies who either produce
or use the artificial sweetener aspartame as a sugar substitute in their
products. The suits were filed in Shasta, Sonoma and Butte County,
California, yesterday.
The suits allege that the food companies committed fraud and breach of
warranty by marketing products to the public such as diet Coke, diet
Pepsi, sugar free gum, Flintstone's vitamins, yogurt and children's
aspirin with the full knowledge that aspartame, the sweetener in them,
is neurotoxic.
Aspartame is a drug masquerading as an additive. It interacts with other
drugs, has a synergistic and additive effect with MSG, and is a chemical
hyper-sensitization agent. As far back as 1970, Dr. John Olney founded
the field of neuroscience called "Excitotoxicity" when he did studies on
aspartic acid, which makes up 40% of aspartame, and found it caused
lesions in the brains of mice. He made world news on the aspartame/brain
tumor connection in l996. Dr. Ralph Walton, Professor and Chairman of
the Department of Psychiatry, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of
Medicine has written of the behavioral and psychiatric problems
triggered by aspartame-caused depletion of serotonin.
Aspartame causes headache, memory loss, seizures, vision loss, coma and
cancer. It worsens or mimics the symptoms of such diseases and
conditions as fibromyalgia, MS, lupus, ADD, diabetes, Alzheimer's,
chronic fatigue and depression.
Aspartame liberates free methyl alcohol. The resulting chronic methanol
poisoning affects the dopamine system of the brain causing addiction.
Methanol, or wood alcohol, constitutes one-third of the aspartame
molecule and is classified as a severe metabolic poison and narcotic.
Recent news is full of reports of world-class athletes and other healthy
consumers of aspartame suddenly dropping dead. Sudden death can occur
from aspartame use because it damages the cardiac conduction system.
Dr. Woodrow Monte in the peer reviewed journal, Aspartame: Methanol and
the Public Health, wrote: "When diet sodas and soft drinks, sweetened
with aspartame, are used to replace fluid loss during exercise and
physical exertion in hot climates, the intake of methanol can exceed 250
mg/day or 32 times the Environmental Protection Agency's recommended
limit of consumption for this cumulative poison."
The effects of aspartame are documented by the FDA's own data. In 1995
the agency was forced, under the Freedom Of Information Act, to release
a list of ninety-two aspartame symptoms reported by thousands of
victims. This is only the tip of the iceberg. H. J. Roberts, MD,
published the medical text "Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic" -
1,000 pages of symptoms and diseases triggered by this neurotoxin,
including the sordid history of its approval.
Since its discovery in 1965, controversy has raged over the health risks
associated with the sugar substitute. From laboratory testing of the
chemical on rats, researchers have discovered that the drug induces
brain tumors. On Sept 30, l980, the Board of Inquiry of the FDA
concurred and denied the petition for approval. In l981, the newly
appointed FDA Commissioner, Arthur Hull Hayes, ignored the negative
ruling and approved aspartame for dry goods.
As recorded in the Congressional Record of 1985, then CEO of Searle
Laboratories Donald Rumsfeld said that he would call in his markers to
get aspartame approved. Rumsfeld was on President Reagan's transition
team and a day after taking office appointed Hayes. No FDA Commissioner
in the previous sixteen years had allowed Aspartame on the market.

In 1983, aspartame was approved for use in carbonated beverages. Today
it is found in over 5,000 foods, drinks and medicines.
Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, MD, author of "Excitotoxins: The Taste
That Kills" (
http://www.russellblaylockmd.com ) wrote about the relationship
between aspartame and macular degeneration, diabetic blindness and
glaucoma (all known to result from excitotoxin accumulation in the
retina).
All of these neurodegenerative diseases are worsened by aspartame. In
addition, we now have evidence that excitotoxins play a major role in
exacerbation of MS and other demyelinating disorders including
trigeminal neuraliga. Blaylock says that new studies show excitotoxins
trigger significant elevation of free radicals in the lining
(endothelial cells) of arteries, which means that aspartame will
increase the incidence of heart attacks and strokes (atherosclerosis).
In original studies, aspartame has triggered brain, mammary, uterine,
ovarian, testicular, thyroid and pancreatic tumors.
Defendants in the lawsuits include Coca-cola, PepsiCo, Bayer Corp., the
Dannon Company, William Wrigley Jr. Company, ConAgra Foods, Wyeth,
Inc.,The NutraSweet Company, and Altria Corp. (parent company of Kraft
Foods and Philip Morris).
Plaintiffs have asked for an injunction to stop companies from
producing, manufacturing, processing, selling or using aspartame.
Plaintiffs in all three cases are seeking a jury trial.

A Scripps Clinic of San Diego researchers divided a group of 100 obese
subjects into three equal groups: one group ate half a grapefruit before
each meal, one group drank a glass of grapefruit juice before each meal,
and one group was instructed not to eat any grapefruit or drink any
grapefruit juice. Subjects followed their regimens for three months,
while continuing to eat as they normally would.
What they found backs up the old claims of that old "grapefruit diet"
and the claims that it helps lose weight. Those in the group that ate
grapefruit with each meal lost an average of 3.6 pounds. Subjects in the
grapefruit juice group lost an average of 3.3 pounds. A few of the
subjects in both of these groups lost nearly 10 pounds. Meanwhile, the
average weight loss in the group that consumed no grapefruit was less
than one pound.
Those same researchers also now believe that grapefruit contains
chemical properties that assist in the management of insulin levels - a
potential boon to dieters and diabetics alike. At the beginning and the
completion of the Scripps study, researchers measured the insulin and
glucose levels of all subjects. When the test was over, those in the two
grapefruit groups had lower levels of insulin and glucose than they did
at the beginning, while levels in the non-grapefruit group were
unchanged.
Grapefruit is rich in water-soluble fiber, which has been shown to
enhance digestion while helping regulate the absorption of carbohydrates
that would otherwise contribute to blood sugar spikes. It is also high
in pectin, a soluble fiber that helps reduce cholesterol levels.
Grapefruit is a great and healthy food! WARNING: medications should not
be taken within at least an hour of eating grapefruit or drinking
grapefruit juice as some medication affects are enhanced when combined?

Americans Over 40 Warned Over Vision Loss

CHICAGO (AP) - More than 28 million Americans over age 40 have
eye ailments that put them at risk for vision loss and
blindness, researchers say, warning that the numbers will surge
as the population ages.
Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide and the
No. 1 cause of poor vision in the United States, affecting an
estimated 20.5 million American adults. That number is expected
to climb to 30.1 million in the next 20 years, researchers say.
Other major causes of blindness and vision loss are macular
degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. All are
strongly linked with aging.
The figures published Monday in April's Archives of
Ophthalmology present the most accurate estimates to date on the
prevalence of major causes of blindness and visual impairment in
the United States, according to Dr. Frederick Ferris III of the
National Eye Institute, which helped fund the research.
The data are crucial for showing where research dollars need to
be spent to avoid a "tidal wave of chronic ocular disease over
the next few decades," Ferris and Johns Hopkins University
researcher James Tielsch wrote in an accompanying editorial.
Currently, 1 million Americans over 40 are blind. They are among
3.3 million who suffer from some vision loss, a number projected
to reach 5.5 million by 2020.
The numbers are of concern not just because of their magnitude,
but also "because of the substantial increases in health care
costs they spell," said Dr. Nathan Congdon, a coordinator of the
research and an associate professor of ophthalmology at Johns
Hopkins.
More than $3 billion yearly is spent on cataract treatment
alone, which usually involves surgery, Congdon said. Cataracts
are cloudy areas that develop on the eye's lens and can result
from injuries or age-related chemical changes.
Macular degeneration involves damage to the macula, the center
of the retina at the back of the eye. About 1.8 million adults
are affected, the researchers said. In some cases,
light-sensitive cells in the macula break down, gradually
impairing vision. In others, leaky new blood vessels form behind
the retina and cause vision loss.
Treatments include lasers or laser-activated drugs, and recent
studies have shown that high doses of antioxidant vitamins can
help slow or even prevent vision loss in macular degeneration.
Glaucoma affects about 2.2 million U.S. adults. It usually
involves a build-up of fluid that normally bathes the eye,
causing pressure that damages the optic nerve. Treatment
includes eye drops and surgery.
Diabetic retinopathy, which involves eye damage resulting from
blood vessels weakened by diabetes, affects about 4 million
American adults. Laser therapy, surgery and better control of
diabetes are among the treatments.

Nuke Site Workers Fear Health Problems

RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) - State and federal officials are investigating
procedures at the nation's most contaminated nuclear site amid
allegations that workers aren't being adequately protected against
exposure to chemical vapors.
More than 90 workers have sought medical care for exposure at Hanford
nuclear site tank farms in the past two years, according to data
gathered by the Government Accountability Project, a nonprofit watchdog
group. Few workers will speak publicly. Symptoms of exposure to chemical
vapors include headaches, nosebleeds and a metallic taste.
A 1997 draft report by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
concluded that the risk of contracting cancer from exposure to the
vapors could be as high as 1.6 in 10.
In the industrial world, normal risk is for one worker in 10,000 to
contract cancer from exposures in the workplace, according to Tim
Jarvis, a former researcher at the laboratory and peer reviewer of the
report. Jarvis now is a private consultant often contracted by the
Government Accountability Project.
"The report shows that exposure to tank vapors is extremely hazardous
and will most likely lead to fatal cancers in the workers if exposure is
continued," Jarvis said.
"My own personal opinion is I'm not being protected," said Virginia
Wallace, a respiratory equipment specialist who takes samples inside the
tanks. Her husband Steve is an instrument technician. "People are afraid
to seek medical attention. I've been scared," she said.
For 40 years, the Hanford reservation made plutonium for the nation's
nuclear weapons arsenal. Today, work there centers on a $50 billion to
$60 billion cleanup to be finished by 2035 under an accelerated schedule
pushed by the Bush administration.
The most deadly waste, about 53 million gallons of radioactive liquid,
sludge and saltcake, sits in 177 underground tanks less than 10 miles
from the Columbia River. Plans call for turning much of that waste into
glass logs and burying it at a nuclear waste repository.
Experts have identified as many as 1,200 chemicals, including some known
cancer-causing agents, in the tanks.
CH2M Hill, the Colorado-based contractor hired to handle cleanup, and
the Energy Department, which manages the cleanup, say most of the
chemicals are diluted and pose no danger to workers. Only three -
ammonia, nitrous oxide and butanol - have been found in the tanks' air
cavities at levels exceeding occupation exposure limits, CH2M Hill said.
"No one has received a toxic dose of these chemicals," said Rob Barr,
director of environment safety and quality for the Energy Department's
Office of River Protection.
"We are concerned and they should be concerned," Barr said. But, he
added, "We have a very high assurance that there are no long-term
effects of the chemicals that are out there, because they are at such a
low level."
CH2M Hill says the rising number of exposures are, in part, a result of
educating workers about vapors and encouraging them to report unusual
smells.
More than 800 people work in the tank farms for CH2M Hill. The total
work force at Hanford is about 11,000 people.
Following four vapor incidents in two weeks last month - which sent nine
workers for medical evaluations - CH2M Hill halted routine work in the
tank farms. The company has restarted some work since, but employees who
enter the tank farms must wear respirators.
Critics argue that respirators can't protect against all 1,200
chemicals.
Last month, the Energy Department began formally investigating the
Hanford Environmental Health Foundation, the private contractor that
monitors and provides health care to Hanford workers. The contractor has
denied allegations that include fraud and medical-records mismanagement.
Officials there did not return telephone messages seeking comment
Friday.
A report CH2M Hill commissioned last fall by four independent experts
cited failures to communicate procedural changes or safety issues about
vapors.
Susan Eberlein, vice president of safety for CH2M Hill, said the company
is continuing to educate employees about vapors and improve
communications.
"We're trying to minimize exposures as much as possible," she said.
